- Leo Palamino has dedicated his life to what some may call impossible dreams. At least his ex-wife Julie would call them that. But Leo is an expert at not listening to her criticism or anyone else's for that matter because Leo is a stubborn romantic... An idealist. A dreamer. And to dream big, impossible dreams you can't listen to the people who tell you that's what those dreams are. It is precisely this refusal to listen to criticism that drove his ex-wife Julie to blog about Leo's flaws as their relationship broke down. A blog... called Why You Suck that would become a cultural phenomenon. And so when we meet Leo Palamino, he is a romantic dreamer, a dedicated writer, a dishwasher in a tourist trap, and a celebrity... A man famous for his flaws. Then one afternoon, as the very dejected Leo watches Julie being interviewed on a talk show about her upcoming book, he lays eyes on the woman of his (impossible) dreams... COLETTE is on her way into a wedding across the street from Leo's house. Her wedding.—Anonymous
- Leo (Ryan Kwanten), a newly divorced man, falls in love with Colette (Sara Canning) on her wedding day and decides to try to win her heart. Leo is discovered to be a failed writer and recent divorcee.
His former wife Julie (Kristen Hager) has written a blog entitled "Why You Suck" which has gone on to be published and become a top selling book. It has been 18 months since their divorce and Julie is now going on Morning TV talk shows, where her book has become a template for women to test if their husband is right for them. Julie says that she was a real estate agent, so Leo could write, and she hated it. And they never shared her favorite pass time to climb a mountain so watch a sunset, as Leo is afraid of heights. Julie also said that Leo had a passion for absurd, and unrealistic dreams.
Colette has just married Danny (Ryan McPartlin), who is a successful lawyer, runs a children's charity and skied at the Olympics. Troy Cooper (James A. Woods) is Danny's best man and skied alongside Danny at the Olympics.
Leo hits on Colette at her wedding and is chased out by Danny & Troy. Leo meets Tess (Catherine O'Hara), Colette's mother, who tells Leo that she does not believe that Danny is the right man for her. Danny and Colette met just 4 months ago. Tess believes that her lack of care with Colette during her childhood, drove Colette to seek stability in her adult life. Tess says that she stole money from the Government and lived in London for a while, where they connected with nature and art. But then, the money ran out and Tess had to hide from the authorities and could not give attention to Colette. At heart Tess believes that Colette is an adventurer like herself.
Leo in turn is a dishwasher working for his friend in his restaurant. Leo also suffers from a crippling fear of heights. Neil (Will Sasso) is Leo's best friend & tells Leo not to pursue Colette. Colette runs a tour company. Neil also published a book for Leo, which failed, and which meant that Neil had to resort to printing cheap tabloids to keep paying the bills. Neil is married to Jill and are into taking way too intimate pictures of each other on their phones.
Leo pursues Colette by getting a ticket to one of her walking tours of the city. Meanwhile Colette has challenges with Danny when Danny's parents gift them a fully furnished expensive house, that Colette feels uncomfortable taking, because she feels she didn't earn it yet.
Leo tells Colette on one her city tours that Danny doesn't deserve her & is only pretending to be like her in order to impress her. Meanwhile Danny encourages Colette to give up the tours & to go back to school instead. Colette rubbishes the idea as she loves her tours. But Colette starts thinking that Leo is right. Leo also finds that Colette maintains a camper in the wilderness, where she goes every now and then to escape.
Neils wife Jill (Jennifer Baxter) is an artist, whose work is being shown in a gallery owned by Troy. Troy is incredibly good looking & Jill is sexy, so Neil is worried of losing Jill to Troy. Danny reads Julie's blog to Colette, where she finds the quirks about Leo like he would like to have sex in weird places, and that he refused to make a single change to his book after accepting a generous advance from a NY publisher. He gave the president of the publishing company the finger, published the book locally (with Neil) & it bombed.
Leo keeps pursuing Colette and has a tiny moment with her, when she and him connect with nature on one of her tours. Danny retaliates by evicting Leo from his house on charges of keeping drugs on premises (he kept a marijuana plant for his cat's arthritis). Colette reads Julie's book and understands Leo psyche better & starts to think he is pathetic. Tess steps in when Leo is about to give up. She encourages Leo to prove to Colette that just one thing in the book that Julie writes is wrong, cause if she believes one thing is wrong then she would question everything else.
Leo decides to disprove Julie's assertion that Leo has a crippling fear of heights. He takes hand gliding lessons from Jill & decides to crash Danny's camp by hand gliding over the venue, but instead crashes right into it and ruins the whole camp. Colette starts thinking about Leo more. Danny confronts Leo & threatens to send his restaurant friend (who is Indian by the way) back to India, for flouting visa rules (that ran out 2 years ago), if Leo doesn't leave Colette alone. Leo honors the deal, but Colette eventually finds that Danny threatened Leo with his friend's deportation & leaves Danny. Neil finds that Jill's exhibition was all about Neil as her subject and melts his doubts away about his relationship with Jill.
Colette has wild sex with Leo. But the next day she tells Leo that she left Danny because of Leo, & not for Leo. Leo is heartbroken. Julie finally forgives Leo & mentions his book on her talk show, which makes it sell like crazy & makes Neil a lot of money. Eventually Colette comes back to Leo, and they become a couple
