As we enter the fall/holiday season, “Wicked” (Universal) is gathering early buzz for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Other standouts include “The Substance” (Mubi), “A Different Man” (A24), “Longlegs” (Neon), “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.), “Emilia Pérez” (Netflix), and “Maria” (Netflix). But the race will heat up with the arrival of “Nosferatu” (Focus Features) on Christmas.

Skeleton Crew never say die! At least, that’s what the inspiration behind the new Disney+ series from Lucasfilm seems to be. According to executive producer Jon Favreau, Skeleton Crew took its cue from famous ‘80s coming-of-age favorites, particularly those produced by Steven Spielberg and his Amblin company. A new trailer for Skeleton Crew has just been released by Disney+. A glimpse of a suburban setting, a school, and the upbeat trailer song really drives home the “family adventure” tone for this show. Favreau and Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts also use the classic mystery and exploration tropes in this Star Wars galaxy. The latest live-action series will premiere on Disney+ on December 3.
The official synopsis for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew reads: “When four kids make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, they get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Finding their way home,...

Newcomers include Uzo Aduba (Orange Is the New Black), Ben Mendelsohn (The Marsh King’s Daughter), Lakeith Stanfield (Judas and the Black Messiah), Juno Temple (Ted Lasso), Melonie Diaz (Fruitvale Station), Molly Price (Babygirl), the newly Gotham Award-nominated Lily Collias (Good One), Emory Cohen (Rebel Ridge), and Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel).

Ralph Fiennes is the type of actor that’s so consistently excellent that it’s paradoxically easy to take him for granted. Equally at home as a supporting player as a leading man, Fiennes has steadily been turning in great onscreen turns for three decades since his 1993 breakout, and he’s been celebrated with two Oscar nominations. But he hasn’t been recognized since the ’90s, despite a growing body of immaculate, perfectly-calibrated performances.
For many, Fiennes is most famous as a villain, utilizing his icy blue eyes for menacing effect. He broke out and received his first Oscar nomination in 1993 playing infamous Nazi war criminal Amon Göth in “Schindler’s List,” giving a pitiless and terrifying performance. In 2005, he was introduced to a whole new generation of audience members as the serpentine, ghastly, resurrected Voldemort in “Harry Potter,” which remains perhaps his best known role.

There aren’t many actors whose filmographies can stack up against Ralph Fiennes. Think about it – Schindler’s List, Strange Days, Quiz Show, The English Patient, The Constant Gardener, The Grand Budapest Hotel, etc. Plus, he was M in the Daniel Craig James Bond movies and Voldemort. In recent years, Fiennes seems to be getting better and better, with The Menu an art-house smash, while he’s also appearing in Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later.
Add to that already impressive list of credits Edward Berger’s Conclave, in which he plays a Cardinal presiding over a Papal election who turns into a sleuth when he discovers backstabbing amongst the candidates. Can a great actor be taken for granted?
It’s been 30 years since Ralph Fiennes broke out as vicious Nazi Amon Goeth in “Schindler’s List,” which earned him his first Oscar nomination, followed three years later by his second, for the romantic adventure “The English Patient.” While he has labored in the commercial trenches on three Bond films (as M) and four Harry Potter installments (as Lord Voldemort), Fiennes has delivered many Oscar-worthy performances over the decades. Somehow, they were overlooked by the Academy Actors branch.
In short, he’s overdue. “Conclave” is their opportunity to set things right.
Edward Berger’s follow-up to Oscar-winning German war film “All Quiet on the Western Front” is a total crowdpleaser. The English-language “Conclave,” adapted by Peter Straughan from Robert Harris’s bestselling thriller, played well at Telluride and Toronto (Metascore 78), followed by audience awards at the regional festivals Middleburg and Mill Valley.

There is always a shortlist of actors deserving of an Academy Award. Ralph Fiennes is one of them. He earned a Supporting Actor nomination in 1994 for “Schindler’s List,” but lost out to Martin Landeau for “Ed Wood.” He landed a Best Actor nod in 1997 for “The English Patient,” but Geoffrey Rush had that one in the bag for “Shine.” And in the almost three decades since, he’s been overlooked for incredible work in films such as “The End of the Affair,” “The Constant Gardner,” “Coriolanus,” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” That may change with his celebrated performance as Cardinal Thomas Lawrence in Edward Berger’s adaptation of Robert Harris‘ novel, “Conclave.”

Horror, martial arts, sci-fi and more – here’s our pick of 35 genre films you can watch for free on Tubi.
Like any streaming service, particularly of the ad-supported variety, there’s a lot of filler on Tubi, the subscription-free platform which recently made its debut in the UK.
On there you’ll find an array of low-budget documentaries of spurious quality, landfill reality TV and how-did-this-get-made TV movies (Amish Abduction).
Do a bit of digging, though, and you’ll find plenty of movies that are genuinely worth watching, including the work of such respected directors as Michael Mann (Ali), Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan), David Fincher (Gone Girl) and Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel).
Look beyond even those worthy films, and Tubi is positively stuffed with genre and cult offerings – sci-fi, horror, comedy, martial arts, thrillers and more besides. Finding these can take a bit of hunting around, however, so...

Few recent Oscar juggernauts have been quite as perplexing in their forward momentum as Edward Berger’s 2022 adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front.” A handsomely assembled but ultimately overproduced and hollow contribution to the increasingly thinning “War Is Bad” sect of cinema, it was more than a shock to see the film steamroll its way as the annual international film to break through in Hollywood that year, especially due to Berger’s undoubtedly competent but anonymously workmanlike approach at the helm. It makes complete sense, then, that Berger’s next gig—amid swirling rumors that he’ll be the next studio whipping boy for franchises like James Bond and the Bourne series—would be one more squarely positioned in the awards race, without that pesky obstacle of subtitles that Americans hate so fervently.

Jeff Goldblum’s film career started in a particularly auspicious manner since his first four films were all highly regarded works of the early 1970s: “Death Wish”, “California Split”, “Nashville” and “Next Stop, Greenwich Village.” He continued to work in film and television for the next four decades and even returned to Broadway a few times, most notably in the highly regarded Martin McDonough play “The Pillowman.”
Along the way Goldblum has picked up a number of award nominations including an Oscar nomination for Best Live Action Short Film for “Little Surprises.” He received an Emmy nomination for a guest appearance on “Will and Grace” in 2005. He also was a nominee for Best Actor for two of the most prestigious critics awards groups for his work in “The Fly.” Both the New York Film’s Critics and the National Society of Film Critics named him as one of the top three actors of the year.

The Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is particularly tough to predict early on because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in two stages. First, upwards of 15 members of the branch who attend special screenings cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters moving on to the second stage (it was a lucky seven till 2021). Those members from the first stage and any other members who either attend screenings of excerpts from these semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated; that is up from three in years past. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.)
The award for Best Makeup was introduced in 1981, following an outcry over the lack of recognition for Christopher Tucker‘s groundbreaking work on “The Elephant Man” (1980). Hairstylists began sharing the award with makeup artists in 1993 when “Mrs. Doubtfire” won.

As is the case with most below-the-line Oscar categories, bigger equals better when it comes to Best Production Design. The more lavish the sets, the more accurate the period detail, the more extravagant the designs, the more likely your film will win an Academy Award. Formerly known as Best Art Direction/Set Decoration, this prize goes to the production designer and set decorator, leaving the poor art directors on the outside looking in; perhaps that accounts for the title change. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design.)
Like Best Costume Design, this award rarely corresponds with Best Picture. Before “The Shape of Water” prevailed in both categories in 2018, the last to line-up was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Often, the winner of this race hasn’t even been nominated for the top prize, as was the case with “Memoirs of a Geisha...

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2024 winner “Poor Things.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Costume Design.)
Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 Best Picture champs also won this award; the last to do so was “The Artist” in 2012.

Of all the below-the-line categories at the Oscars, Best Original Score is the most difficult to predict early on due to the finicky nature of the music branch of the academy. Vertical Entertainment has just sent over the trailer to their official Venice and TIFF selection — the tense thriller The Order. Justin Kurzel is in the director’s chair. Based on Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s novel The Silent Brotherhood, The Order stars Jude Law (Closer, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow), Nicholas Hoult (Superman, Renfield, Mad Max: Fury Road), and Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One, X-Men: Apocalypse, Mud).
The official synopsis reads,
“For over a year, a series of bold daylight bank robberies and armored car heists leaves law enforcement baffled and the public panicked throughout the Pacific Northwest. As the attacks become increasingly violent, FBI agent Terry Husk (Jude Law) becomes convinced that the robberies are the work of a domestic terrorist gang that plan to use the loot to finance an armed uprising against the U.S. government.

A brutal Oscar season is ahead…in a good way.
As the Oscar race heats up, Hollywood is bracing for an intense, wide-open awards season. After its whirlwind tour through the Venice, Toronto, and New York Film Festivals, A24’s newly acquired historical epic “The Brutalist” has emerged as a potential heavyweight in this year’s Academy Awards lineup. Starring Adrien Brody in a career-redefining role as a Hungarian-born Jewish architect who survives the Holocaust and journeys to the U.S., the film screened in front of an influential audience at CAA on Sunday night. The room was filled with industry professionals, journalists, and Oscar winners like Cord Jefferson (“American Fiction”). After the screening, the film’s director, Brady Corbet, and co-writer Mona Fastvold participated in a post-screening Q&a session, giving the audience insight into the seven-year odyssey to bring this project to life.

Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”) has long been our Oscars front-runner for Best Actor, but the ground keeps shifting under his feet, and now one of his rivals has risen up to tie him. Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”) is now dead even with him at 4/1 odds, based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. But both of them need to keep an eye on two other contenders directly underneath them who could swoop in at any minute.

Searchlight Pictures is celebrating a milestone anniversary with … T-shirts!
The studio, which is marking the moment with a variety of initiatives and partners from Ore-Ida and Warby Parker to Hitching Post Winery, has teamed up once again with buzzy Los Angeles brand Hiro Clark to honor its 30th year in business. (The two previously partnered on “Hello Stranger” shirts after the success of the critically acclaimed All of Us Strangers from Andrew Haigh.)
In doing so, Hiro Clark is offering a limited-edition collection of tees, five in total, that retail for $98 apiece in multiple color options. Here’s the part cinephiles need to know: The line of five honors Searchlight’s beloved films including Tamara Jenkins’ 1998 movie Slums of Beverly Hills, Kimberly Peirce’s 1999 film Boys Don’t Cry, Jared Hess’s 2004 film Napoleon Dynamite, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’ 2006 film Little Miss Sunshine, and Scott Cooper’s 2009 film Crazy Heart.

Justin Kurzel’s political thriller The Order will open the Zurich Film Festival in October with its star Jude Law in attendance alongside the director to receive the event’s Golden Eye Award for his performance and career.
Law plays a FBI agent who dismantles a far-right terrorist cell in the movie, which recently world premiered at the Venice Film Festival and then made its North American debut at Toronto.
The actor will be presented with the award at the Zurich gala premiere for The Order on October 3.
‘Jude Law is an absolute dream guest’, says Zurich Film Festival Artistic Director Christian Jungen. “He is not only the leading actor in the thriller The Order, which he carries from A to Z with his charisma, but also the producer.
“Although the film is set in 1983, it revolves around the machinations of right-wing extremist circles in the USA and is therefore highly topical.

Ya está aquí el nuevo tráiler y póster de la película Megalopolis, escrita, dirigida y producida por Francis Ford Coppola (El Padrino), que se proyectará en el Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián dentro de la sección Perlak.

The 51st edition of the Telluride Film Festival concluded on Labor Day, with three standout films generating significant Oscar buzz: Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner “Anora,” Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical “Emilia Pérez,” and Jason Reitman’s dark comedy “Saturday Night.”
Distributed by Sony Pictures, “Saturday Night” marks Reitman’s return to both directing and screenwriting, collaborating with co-writer Gil Kenan. While the film takes a high-tension look at the 90 minutes leading up to the first episode of the iconic sketch show “Saturday Night Live,” it has received mixed reactions from critics. However, history has shown that critical reception does not always align with Oscar success, as evidenced by past Best Picture winners like “Green Book” (2018) and “Coda” (2021). The No. 1 rule of Oscar punditry is to remember critics are not Oscar voters.
On the other hand, RaMell Ross’s “Nickel Boys” could be poised to make an impression with both the L.

The Pope is dead, and the Catholic College of Cardinals — all deeply pious men with nothing but God in their hearts, of course — start maneuvering to take his place before the Holy Father’s body has even been wheeled out of sight. For all of their eminence, the cardinals are no more immune to cattiness and ambition than anyone else.
In real life, such human foibles are likely veiled behind the solemnity of religious tradition and the sacred import of what’s at stake. In “Conclave,” however, which “All Quiet on the Western Front” director Edward Berger has adapted from the Robert Harris novel of the same name, the cardinals are played by a heavenly gaggle of character actors who’ve spent their careers praying for the chance to stand under the Sistine Chapel and shout “how dare you!” at the top of their lungs.

Universal’s movie adaptation of the hit musical “Wicked” is flying into theatres this year and brings with it a flurry of stars including Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Goldblum, and Michelle Yeoh. But those stars aren’t the only ones who may shine bright in the film as the movie’s trailer displayed a dazzling array of designs that could mean it’s set for Oscar attention. In particular, it could be a key player for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
Paul Tazewell is on costuming duty here. He was nominated for Best Costume Design in 2022 for another musical, “West Side Story.” Although he lost to Jenny Beavan for “Cruella,” musicals are often nominated in this category. Along with “West Side Story,” movie musicals such as “Cyrano,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “La La Land,” “Cinderella,” and “Into the Woods” have...

Ralph Fiennes is a curious case at the Oscars. He has earned two nominations in his career, but they both came back in the ’90s for “Schindler’s List” (1993) and “The English Patient” (1996). What makes that so curious is that he never stopped appearing in Oscar movies, but he somehow wasn’t nominated for any of them over the next 27 years. This year, though, the combined predictions of Gold Derby users suggest that Fiennes will finally make the cut again for Best Actor for “Conclave.”
Let’s consider Fiennes’s impressive filmography since “The English Patient.” “The End of the Affair” (1999) earned co-star Julianne Moore an Oscar nom. “The Constant Gardener” (2005) won an Oscar for co-star Rachel Weisz. “In Bruges” (2008) contended for its original screenplay. “The Reader” (2008) won an Oscar for co-star Kate Winslet and was nominated for Best Picture. “The Hurt Locker” (2009) won Best Picture. “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014) was...

He’s been in (almost) every Wes Anderson movie, is related to Francis Ford and Sofia Coppola and drummed for the Beastie Boys. Now’s your chance to ask him – what’s it like being Jason Schwartzman?
You’d probably most associate Jason Schwartzman with Wes Anderson films as he’s been in seven of the blighters: Rushmore, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch and 2023’s Asteroid City.
You might also be aware that he’s from a famous film family, which includes uncle Francis Ford Coppola, cousins Roman and Sofia and (on the other side) cousin Nicolas Cage.

Google a list of the all-time best Saturday Night Live hosts, and you’ll find a surprising number of people who you’d never guess were funny in the first place.
I mean, before SNL, who knew athletes Charles Barkley and Peyton Manning were hilarious? Who watched Nsync videos and predicted that Justin Timberlake had “Dick in a Box” in him? Billie Eilish? Chance the Rapper? Anyone have news anchor Brian Williams on their funny bingo card?
As the show embarks on its landmark 50th season, here are five more suggestions for out-of-the-box SNL hosts who just might knock it out of the park…
1 Tony Hawk
Hawk has been quietly comedy-adjacent for years, appearing in College Humor sketches, skateboarding in a fat suit in a Jackass movie and lending his voice to The Simpsons.

The 58th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (June 28 to July 6) boasted not one but two competitions, the Crystal Globe and Proxima, presided over by the festival president Jiří Bartoška, artistic director Karel Och, and executive director Kryštof Mucha. The festival is the main summer event in the country, which attracts many sponsors and patrons who want to attend, and faces none of the financial hardships of such festivals as Berlin, Toronto, and Sundance. 130 films are shown, with 140,000 tickets sold. There is no room for growth, given the limited venues, from the many screening rooms at the festival hub, the Hotel Thermal, where juror Christine Vachon mixed Negronis for her fellow jurors between screenings, to the colorful arthouse Kino Drahomira, named after a revered Czech woman director.

There are rumors circulating that Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) and the legendary Kurt Russell (Big Trouble in Little China) might end up sharing the screen in an upcoming Yellowstone sequel series – if McConaughey likes the script, whenever it might land on his desk. But while we wait to find out what’s going to happen with that project, Deadline has revealed that McConaughey and Russell just worked together on the recently wrapped crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King! Also in the cast are Cole Sprouse (Lisa Frankenstein), Owen Teague (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), Scott Shepherd (Killers of the Flower Moon), Rob Morgan (Mudbound), Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Jake Horowitz (Bones and All), and newcomer Angelina LookingGlass.

Exclusive: Black Bear on Tuesday announced the supporting cast for its Matthew McConaughey film The Rivals of Amziah King, which has wrapped production.
Actors set to join include Golden Globe nominee Kurt Russell (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Cole Sprouse (Lisa Frankenstein), Owen Teague (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), Scott Shepherd (Killers of the Flower Moon), Rob Morgan (Mudbound), Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Jake Horowitz (Bones and All) and newcomer Angelina LookingGlass.
The Rivals‘ plot is being kept under wraps, though the project is described as a character-focused crime thriller set against the backdrop of rural Oklahoma. LookingGlass landed the co-lead opposite McConaughey, we’re told, following a worldwide search. Being recognized as one of the best directors of the 21st century, Wes Anderson inscribed his name in movie history by his distinctive visual and narrative styles. His eccentric movies managed to attract millions of amazed viewers all around the world.

Karan Kandhari’s “Sister Midnight” is a surreal Mumbai fable with an aggressive comedic rhythm. It’s composed by hitting the same few notes ad nauseam, but hitting them exceptionally well and for much longer than one might expect before it eventually runs out of steam. All the while, Kandhari takes a novel visual approach to the topic of arranged marriage, situating his woebegone couple — his protagonist in particular, a woman who feels trapped — in a realm of strange psychosis. It’s better than it has any right to be, but not nearly as good as it should be.

Vertical is getting ahead of the crowds as this year’s Cannes market starts wheeling and dealing for Hollywood’s hottest projects and properties. The studio acquired the U.S. rights from AGC Studios to The Order, with Justin Kurzel in the director’s chair. Based on Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s novel The Silent Brotherhood, The Order stars Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, and Tye Sheridan.
Here’s a synopsis of Flynn and Gerhardt’s novel courtesy of Library Journal:
Two courageous investigative journalists have created an insider’s account of the “silent brotherhood,” the anti-Jewish, white supremacist underground that, with the justification of some perversely interpreted Christian teachings, conducts an all-out race war. The movement has gathered a group of superpatriots, zealots, malcontents, as well as, rather disturbingly, a large majority of ordinary people. Wes Anderson is the singularly talented filmmaker who has quickly gone from indie darling to Oscar favorite in just a little over two decades, creating a number of quirky, visually splendid classics. Let’s take a look back at all 11 of Anderson’s films, ranked worst to best.
Anderson made his directorial debut with “Bottle Rocket” (1996), released when he was just 27-years-old. He received his first Oscar nomination five years later: Best Original Screenplay for “The Royal Tenenbaums” (2001). He followed that eight years later with a Best Animated Feature bid for the stop-motion film “Fantastic Mr. Fox” (2009). Another Best Original Screenplay nomination followed for “Moonrise Kingdom” (2012). Then he hit the Oscar jackpot with Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay nominations for “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014) — well, almost hit the jackpot, since he went home empty-handed from those awards, losing all three to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for “Birdman.” He...

Since his first film, Writer/Director Wes Anderson has become known for his highly visual combination of bright colors with an older aesthetic. His costuming and set design have a very specific signature that makes it easy to identify when watching a Wes Anderson movie. With him currently working on a new film, The Phoenician Scheme, which reunites him with his muse Bill Murray, we take a look back at all his feature-length films and try to figure out where they rank. To note, his recent Netflix shorts, including the Oscar-winning The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar aren’t included.
