The second season of Citadel has officially wrapped up shooting. Starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden, the series completed shooting a few days ago, Chopra confirmed through Instagram. Taking to Instagram, she treated fans to behind-the-scenes content and moments from her farewell to the cast and crew. This season, directed by Joe Russon, promises to build on the momentum of the first season.

Made on a production budget of $300 million, the first season premiered in April 2023, and since then, it has spanned into a global franchise. The beloved cast of the first season is also set to return for the second season. An official timeline for the release of Citadel season 2 has yet to be discovered.

Prime Video’s Indian spy series “Citadel: Honey Bunny” has claimed the top spot as the streamer’s most-watched series worldwide during its launch weekend.

The show, which debuted Nov. 7, has reached viewers in 200 countries and territories, landing in the Top 10 in nearly 150 markets including the U.S., U.K., France, Italy, Australia, Canada, Brazil and U.A.E. It was also No. 1 in the Prime Video charts in India and in over 30 countries worldwide on launch day.

The series, directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna Dk (known together as Raj & Dk), stars Varun Dhawan and Samantha. Set in the 1990s, the spy thriller follows a stuntman and struggling actress who become entangled in espionage. “Citadel: Honey Bunny” also features an ensemble cast including Kay Kay Menon, Saqib Saleem, Simran, Sikandar Kher, Soham Majumdar, Shivankit Parihar and Kashvi Majmundar. The series is produced by D2R Films and Amazon MGM Studios.

The star-studded Indian spin-off of the Citadel franchise, Honey Bunny, is now streaming on Amazon Prime, and while the series has its fair share of drawbacks, it is definitely the most entertaining entry of the spy-universe so far. The regional offshoots of the original Citadel series were supposed to be independent entries that use the basic structure of the original narrative but explore characters and storylines of their own without depending on it. Set in Italy, the first spin-off of the franchise, Citadel: Diana, went down this route, where the connection with the original series was barely present aside from key continuity references. It’s a completely different story with Honey Bunny, where events are connected with the original series to such an extent that it can be termed a prequel to Citadel.

The latest entry to Amazon Prime’s Citadel spy universe, Honey Bunny, centered on the fictional global intelligence agency’s India division, follows the same old milquetoast intrigue of wavering alliances, families, loyalty, relationships, and a fierce rivalry between secretive intelligence agencies. But in the adept hands of director duo Raj and Dk, the series finds its own character through heart and humor—something which was severely lacking in the last Citadel spin-off series, Citadel: Diana.

The narrative stream of Honey Bunny itself shifts between two distinct timelines, following the series’ tradition, and connects with existing Citadel lore like a prequel installment. The makers have used India as a setting in a way that, with all its Bollywood references, the background score, clichés, and innuendos, the treatment feels relatable for Indian viewers and, to some extent, panders to a westernized perception of the country for global viewers at the same time.

Citadel: Honey Bunny is the latest Prime Video series in the Citadel franchise. After the fun ride that was Citadel: Diana, there was hope that the Indian chapter in the story would continue the storytelling. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite hit the mark.

Exclusive: The latest Citadel spin-off from the Russo Brothers’ Agbo has hit a ratings landmark for Prime Video out of Italy.

The streamer told us that the big-budget Citadel: Diana is now the top-launched Italian original around the world for its first weekend, based on viewership outside its country of origin. Amazon didn’t give us numbers but said the Matilda De Angelis-starrer is number one in Italy, the U.S. and UK, while it has entered the top five in nearly 150 countries including Canada, Australia, Germany, Spain, France, Brazil, Mexico and India, which sets a new bar for Prime Video’s international viewership of Italian-language content.

The success of the Italian series has attracted more audiences to the U.S. version of Citadel, Amazon said, from places like the U.S., UK and Italy. Italian originals that previously performed well for the streamer include Everybody Loves Diamonds and The Bad Guy.

The 2024 fall TV season is a nice return to normalcy after last year was thrown off by the Hollywood strikes. Whoever thought of creating the Citadel franchise must have taken major inspiration from the much beloved Assassin’s Creed, series, given how both these narratives share multiple similarities through two rivaling shadow organizations trying to control and manipulate world events throughout known history, with the dialectical ideology of truth and control guiding them both. That being said, the similarities are superficial because none of the game series’ brilliance in storytelling, nuance, or intrigue in ideological conflicts translate into this snoozefest spy franchise, which holds true for its latest spin-off series, Citadel: Diana, as well. With a compelling lead performance by Matilda De Angelis, there are a few moments where Citadel: Diana seems to fare better than its predecessor, the original series. But that isn’t saying much given how dragged out and generic the narrative itself turns out to be.

After being orphaned in the plane crash, she’s now orphaned from Citadel and in the belly of the beast that is Manticore.

The penultimate episode was always going to be a big one. Citadel: Diana season 1, episode 5 brings us an attack, but how does it all end?

The episode opens with Edo’s passionate speech to his Manticore agents as they head to France. He makes it clear that Diana is working with them to infiltrate France. Now they all need to work together if they want the outcome in mind.

It’s a reminder of strong leadership. Edo has the skills needed to take over Manticore. He just can’t get past his father. It’s not like he’d be able to take Manticore in the direction he wants to right now, anyway. Manticore France and Germany both want to control people, so Edo needs to take them down.

The episode opens eight years earlier, with Diana getting into her car to find someone in the back with a gun to her head. Does he know that Diana is working with Citadel? It doesn’t seem so. The Russo Brothers’ are known for their world-building powers, but the Citadel spy universe they’re designing for Amazon MGM Studios marks a new approach altogether. Whereas the Marvel Cinematic Universe was carefully constructed over multiple movies and many years, Citadel has sped up the whole process for a content-hungry streaming world.

Citadel had first emerged as an idea back in 2018/2019, with development beginning in earnest after Amazon’s Jennifer Salke had approached the Russos about a creating an international spyverse. While the MCU and DC universes have decades of material to work from, Citadel would start from scratch.

After the disappointing way Citadel turned out, I admit that I was worried about Citadel: Diana. With a different team behind it, it did offer some hope, though. It meant that different minds would be behind the story, hopefully getting rid of some of the cliché storytelling that made Citadel fall flat.

The first episode did not disappoint. It didn’t get weighed down by complicated backstory. Of course, it helps a little that we know about Citadel and Manticore from Citadel, but I didn’t feel like we needed it. We’re told the information that we need to know for the spy drama to work if this is the first jump into the world.

After the success of the original mostly U.S.-based Citadel, which premiered in 2023 (starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas) and is currently filming Season 2, the Citadel franchise is spawning several global sequels. An Indian version called Honey Bunny is due in the States on November 7, but first, there’s Citadel: Diana, a six-episode action set in an increasingly authoritarian 2030 Milan, Italy. The protagonist in this iteration is Diana Cavalieri, ostensibly an agent of the international crime syndicate Manticore, which destroyed the European branch of Citadel, another powerful group aiming to keep the world safe — sometimes with less than pristine methods. My biggest deal with the first Citadel was that it was so trophy that even the tropes themselves would be bored at this point. Sure, “thriller” does not equal an “unpredictable plot” line; however, how does one stay intrigued by something that relies on shock value when you know exactly what’s going to happen next? I love Priyanka Chopra, and I’d almost watch anything she’s in, so I pulled through with that one. She does look incredible, and despite the lack of any originality, the show was decently entertaining thanks to its action choreography. I’d say Citadel: Diana is just as tropey, if not more. It definitely feels like a combination of a dozen spy movies/shows you’ve seen before; however, it plays out in a more, for the lack of a better word, thrilling manner. Citadel: Diana is here. It’s hard to fathom how Prime Video’s massive, bloated disappointment Citadel inspired enough confidence to warrant several spinoffs in the coming months. The original series dropped with much buzz and fanfare, mainly due to the “from the Russo Brothers” stamp of approval and the presence of two attractive megastars.

However, as much as you might want to get lost in the eye candy of Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden (and join Stanley Tucci in the “bald brotherhood”), everything about Citadel was overblown, overwrought, and overdone—yet undercooked, like that gorgeous holiday goose that never thaws.

Citadel: Diana, however, is different. Prime Video’s attempt to expand its reach into other markets—à la Netflix—benefits from scaling down the cast, giving characters more engaging arcs, and using special effects in small, effective doses. It also helps to have a breakout star like Matilda De Angelis.

As a big-budgeted high-stakes small-screen espionage caper, Amazon Studios’ Citadel is as trope-filled as you could imagine. What I find funny is, more than focusing on the global conspiracies in the post-truth era; like the premise is set up to be, the series hovers round and round inside the loop of identity crises and family drama. Still, I guess there is some sort of appeal in the generic globe-trotting spectacle, which instilled the studio with enough confidence to greenlight not one but two spin-off series, with more on the way. Among these upcoming entries. Citadel: Diana, set in Italy, is going to premiere later this week, while Citadel: Honey Bunny, set in India, will release in November. To help you get in the groove, let me break down all the major events that took place in the first season of Citadel, which will be directly connected with both the upcoming spin-offs.

Amazon MGM Studios boss Jennifer Salke, Octavia Spencer and Priyanka Chopra Jonas were among the big names lauding the role of women in TV and film at a Prime Video event today.

“Women are at the core of our business – from our incredible actors, our inventive producers and our executive teams,” said Salke, at the Trailblazers event in Central London. The event saw multiple stars, producers and directors touching on issues such as pay parity and production, with several trailers and first looks also unveiled.

During a conversation with Academy Award-winner Octavia Spencer, Salke said the pitch for The Help star’s untitled comedy thriller series opposite Hannah Waddingham was among the best she had heard in her career.

“I have heard thousands of pitches, maybe tens of thousands, and it was a top three — the relationship of two women at the center with action, humor and heart,” she said.

An extraordinary event to celebrate the upcoming releases of two more integral installments of Citadel—- Citadel: Diana and Citadel: Honey Bunny took place in London. Priyanka Chopra Jonas, alongside Italian star Matilda De Angelis and star of Indian Cinema, Samantha, along with the creative teams, including directors Raj & Dk, attended the fabulous night.

Here’s a bit about the Prime Video series Citadel to set the stage. The first season of Citadel, starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas alongside Stanley Tucci and Lesley Manville, premiered to global success in 2023, becoming Prime Video’s second most-watched new original series outside the U.

Priyanka Chopra recently attended a special screening event in London for Citadel: Honey Bunny (India) and Citadel: Diana (Italy), where she was seen posing and interacting with Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Matilda De Angelis, the stars of the respective spinoffs. Priyanka, who starred in the first season of Citadel, donned a striking red bodycon dress, while Samantha opted for a navy blue outfit, and Matilda wore a golden dress. The trio was all smiles as they posed for the camera, along with directors Raj & Dk and other team members.

Citadel: Honey Bunny features Samantha and Varun Dhawan, while Citadel: Diana stars Matilda De Angelis. The global *Citadel* franchise is known for its international espionage stories. Priyanka will reprise her role as Nadia Sinh in the second season of Citadel, which is currently in production. Season one also featured Richard Madden and Stanley Tucci, and the upcoming season is set to be directed by Joe Russo.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas, robots, Robert Downey Jr., and more were in focus in London Tuesday morning as executives from Agbo, the artist-led independent studio from brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, discussed upcoming series and film projects. Chief creative officer Angela Russo-Otstot, the sister of the duo, and chief marketing officer Marian Koltai-Levine also shared insights into the Citadel franchise and its upcoming extensions and more.

Agbo has been developing tentpole-focused entertainment universes that look to reach global audiences via film, TV, games and virtual world experiences. Via the banner, the Russos. have produced such projects as Oscar best picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once, Amazon’s Citadel, and Netflix’s Extraction movies starring Chris Hemsworth, while directing the likes of Apple’s Tom Holland crime drama Cherry (2021), Netflix action movie The Gray Man (2022), and the upcoming sci-fi adventure The Electric State for Netflix.
