Over the past few years, screenwriter Simon Barrett has risen to prominence among film fans in general and horror fans in particular, especially for his last two collaborations with director Adam Wingard. Both the duo’s 2013 feature You’re Next and their 2014 film The Guest have garnered acclaim, with Barrett’s work also appearing in the horror anthology series V/H/S and V/H/S 2, as well as in The ABCs of Death.
The Vicious Brothers are another horror filmmaking duo that have seen their star rise, particularly with their 2014 alien invasion feature Extraterrestrial, as well as their involvement in the found footage horror films Grave Encounters and Grave Encounters 2. Consisting of the duo of Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz, the filmmakers have had other directors handle their written scripts, but have yet to direct from a script written by someone else.

Two's company and three's a crowd--but four can soar! At least that's what the good folks at haRFMFul Productions, Sick Puppy Pictures, MOnsterworks66 and Lion Arch Productions believe as they prep a three-feature slate to shoot in Louisiana later this year or early in 2016!
Rycke Foreman (haRMFul), Phil Condit (Sick Puppy), Maria Olsen (MO66) and Lionel Archuleta (Lion Arch) are developing a slate of three horror-comedies for production in Louisiana and are presently attaching cast and finalizing budgets before approaching La. investors. The three films, Happy Ending, Hacked Off and Grizzled! (#Hehog) are all zany romps through HorCom Land featuring lovely ladies, buckets of blood, hunky heroes and terrifyingly funny Big Bads.
The films may all live in the same genre, but they each have their own special stamp of entertaining insanity:

Shades of Mr. Gray: The Vicious Bros.’ Unsatisfying Close Encounter
Following the unanticipated success of their 2011 film debut, Grave Encounters (which feels very much like the derivative, found footage version of a variety of other abandoned mental hospital narratives, including Brad Anderson’s Session 9, but hey, someone managed to squeeze out Grave Encounters 2 for good measure), the Vicious Bros. are back with a sophomore effort, Extraterrestrial. Can you guess what it’s about? Reportedly based on a tale they drafted back in their college days, the film bears the earmarks of pedantic indistinctness, a generic thrust of recycled, disambiguated alien abduction narratives that’s not only hopelessly shallow but utterly routine.
April (Brittany Allen) and longtime beau Kyle (Freddie Stroma) are heading off to a weekend getaway at her parents’ cabin, about to be sold as part of what sounds like a tense divorce settlement. A trip already...

Despite such bland, generic branding, the Vicious Brothers’ Extraterrestrial shies away from repeating the same mistakes of their ambitiously convoluted last film, Grave Encounters 2, by reaching for a fast-paced, fun-filled watch that’s more in line with their original Grave Encounters. Alien invasion movies have been recycled time and time again – a statement also easily said about found-footage – but the Vicious Brothers decide instead to go the route of reinvention. Why not just have a ton of fun playing with other-worldly stereotypes? Unfortunately there’s no reward without risk, as this haunting chase won’t go down in history, but if you’re looking for a confident horror flick about gangly grey men, strap in and hold on. The ride may be bumpy, but enough flashing lights and shadowy figures distract from a passable simplicity – or maybe I was just brainwashed to believe as much?

Professionally known as The Vicious Brothers, Colin Minihan & Stuart Ortiz are two of the rising names in genre film making. They’ve written and directed the outstanding Grave Encounters (2011) and wrote its sequel, Grave Encounters 2 (2012). Currently they’re out promoting their latest film, Extraterrestrial and took some time to sit with Horrornews.net to talk about it.

WWE Studios has released the first trailer for their horror movie Leprechaun: Origins, which is a reboot of the original cult franchise. I've enjoyed the Leprechaun films that have been made over the years because of how absurd they were. I was especially entertained by the cheesy humor. The reboot seems to have ditched the humor aspect of the franchise and the filmmakers seem to be going for more scares this time around. As much as I enjoy horror films, this doesn't look that good to me.

Today’s filmmakers often appear to be in an arms race to create the biggest beasties imaginable. But the truth is you don’t need to be the size of Godzilla — or even a Big Ass Spider! — to create monstrous amounts of mayhem.
All of which brings us to some important news for horror nuts and, in particular, fans of the Leprechaun series of films. Lionsgate and WWE Studios announced today that the franchise reboot Leprechaun: Origins will be available on Digital HD, Video On Demand, and Pay-Per-View on Aug. 26. God bless Lovefilm, they seem to know what their customers want and act accordingly.
Every time the summer holidays or half term roll around they add a bunch of kids entertainment and now as we are in October and it’s coming up to Halloween they add a whole load of horror films for your viewing pleasure.
Cinema distributors could learn a thing or two from this model, exactly how many horror films are being released in cinemas this Halloween? Oh that’s right only one, The Haunting in Connecticut 2, which doesn’t even make sense as its set in Georgia.
Django Unchained (2012)
Quentin Tarantino’s most recent film is not his best as some have claimed. Tarantino really milks people’s love of his dialogue in the mid-section which means that the pace drags massively for about 30 minutes. It’s not like in Inglorious Basterds where the pace of...

Anchor Bay Entertainment Canada and Indiecan will release director John Poliquin's 2012 Canadian-American horror feature "Grave Encounters 2" on DVD and Blu-ray, March 12, 2013, written by The Vicious Brothers as a sequel to the 'found-footage' 2011 feature "Grave Encounters":
"...'Alex' (Richard Harmon), a young film student obsessed with the story of a missing TV crew, starts getting tips from an anonymous online source that one of the crew may still be alive, but trapped in a psychiatric hospital.
"Alex then persuades a group of his friends to help him break into the institute at night and record everything they encounter on camera, but the supernatural forces that inhabit the asylum clearly have their own sinister plans for the filmmakers..."

Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: March 5, 2013
Price: DVD $26.95, Blu-ray/DVD Combo $29.95
Studio: Tribeca/Cinedigm/New Video
The 2012 horror movie Grave Encounters 2 is the inevitable follow-up to the 2011 found-footage fan favorite Grave Encounters.
Two years ago, a film crew traveled to Canada to shoot an episode of the ghost-hunting reality show Grave Encounters inside an abandoned psychiatric hospital. After voluntarily locking themselves inside the building overnight with cameras placed everywhere, they found themselves lost in a labyrinth of endless hallways and terrorized by the ghosts of former patients. The found footage was later released as a feature film, a horror phenomenon that many people believed was just a movie.
In Grave Encounters 2, film student Alex Wright (Richard Harmon, TV’s The Killing) is obsessed with the first film and after receiving a message from a mysterious blogger with the screen name, “Death Awaits 666,” decides to visit the real psychiatric hospital...

Music video and commercial director John Poliquin takes over duties helming this film, but The Vicious Brothers have stayed on to write the screenplay. Said screenplay, much like Blair Witch 2: Book Of Shadows, plays with the concept that the original film really existed, though unlike BW2, GE2 still keeps the found footage aesthetic.
The film starts off promising enough with video of YouTube fan reviews of the original film, which most of them hate. One of those vocal critics is film student Alex (Trevor Thompson) who has big dreams of doing an original horror film of his own. Suddenly he starts getting strange online messages from someone with the handle "Deathawaits6" urging him to visit the hospital location used in the of the first film. He begins to do some research and learns that everyone who made Grave Encounters has either disappeared or died. Even The Vicious Brothers are...

The first Grave Encounters won some minor acclaim early last year when released straight to DVD as it went places that Paranormal Activity wouldn’t dare. Here was a film with a set up familiar to anyone who went to the cinema in the hopes of seeing something in the corner of a static video camera.
The advantage was that Grave Encounters actually went and showed you the supernatural force in all its angry, face twisting glory. The result was a genuinely tense ride that was scary amongst so many low-budget found footage cash-ins that clog the shelves. Barely a year later, the sequel is now available and is something of a mixed bag.
The plot gets all Meta for the sequel and oddly reminds one of Human Centipede 2 in a way. Alex (Richard Harmon) is a film student who reviews films on his YouTube channel. His review of the...

Grave Encounters 2
Stars: Richard Harmon, Shawn C. Phillips, Jennica Fulton, Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, Charlie Kerr | Written by The Vicious Brothers | Directed by John Poliquin
I never really bought into the hype over Grave Encounters. I thought it was a watchable found footage film based in an abandoned psychiatric hospital, that although had some nice ideas was nothing special. In its defence though compared to some of the films based in the sub-genre it was better, and at least the story by The Vicious Brothers was not lazy. Now that Grave Encounters 2 is being released in the United Kingdom yet again I find myself moving into the world of the found footage film and hoping that it’s not more of the same.
After Grave Encounters was released it got mixed reviews, something we are shown at the start of Grave Encounters 2. One person though, Alex a film student wants to know more.

Hollow
Stars: Emily Plumtree, Sam Stockman, Matt Stokoe, Jessica Ellerby | Written by Matthew Holt | Directed by Michael Axelgaard
Picture the scene, two couples in the countryside with a video camera, a dead relative and a cursed tree. Yes, you picked out the warning sign there, the video camera. What we have in Hollow is yet another found footage film. 2012 was quite a year for this style of film and some may have hoped that we’d have less of them but with this, V/H/S and Grave Encounters 2 being released with just a few weeks between them the trend is still continuing. Now just to see how good Hollow actually is.
The story revolves around a group of friends who have a weekend away at a village in Suffolk that have a legend surrounding an ancient tree which is said to hold an evil spirit within it’s hollowed out interior.

Another year winds down, and it's time to reflect on the good, the bad, and the ugly of 2012's horror offerings. We're giving you ten different lists this time, and per usual they come in a variety of formats, each reflecting the unique styles of our writers. We've also compiled them to come up with the year's overall winners and losers.
And don't be lazy by just reading along! Give us your own lists in the comments section below. We want to hear what you thought of the year in which we dodged the Mayan apocalypse but find our beloved genre facing some dark days as violent movies, video games, TV shows, etc., are coming under increased scrutiny following recent events.
But back to the matter at hand; we averaged out the top and bottom five vote getters on everyone's lists, and here are the results:

The Profane Exhibit is a film which I am eagerly awaiting. An anthology of extreme horror, The Profane Exhibit marks Ruggero Deodato's (Cannibal Holocaust) first directorial project in almost a decade. We are one short closer to release, as Marian Dora's (Zombie Nation, Cannibal) segment, "Mors in Tabula" wraps. Sneak a peek with this still:
In "Mors in Tabula," a middle-aged woman suffering from incurable cancer is offered an operation that could be her "last chance." But the surgeon has only his own desires in mind...
Other directors signed on to The Profane Exhibit include Michael Todd Schneider (August Underground's Mordum), Andrey Iskanov (Philosophy of a Knife, Visions of Suffering), Ryan Nicholson (Famine, Grave Encounters 2), special effects makeup artist Sergio Stivaletti (Cemetary Man, The Stendhal Syndrome), Coffin Joe (Awakening of the Beast, A Capital dos Mortos), Richard Stanley (Hardware, The Theatre Bizarre), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Dead Sushi, The ABCs of Death...

So, Day Five of Toronto After Dark 2012 is officially wrapped, which means we are now a little past the halfway point of the festival. Part of me always gets sad when this happens, but the other part just reminds that part that there are still four more days of fun and movies ahead, and then I cheer up. Anyhow, tonight was dubbed “Scary Night” because both features that played fit pretty solidly into the horror genre, so I put on my Ghostbusters tee and headed out to watch some films with ghosts and mutant children!
The night kicked off with a short titled, Annie and the Dog, which was a solid tale of a priest and a policeman headed to an exorcism. It was well-made and had a lot of humor included; even though it eventually headed into darker territory. If you get the chance, you should seek it out,...

Grave Encounters 2
Directed by John Poliquin
Written by The Vicious Brothers
Canada/USA, 2012
Remember when The Blair Witch Project caused a bit of a kerfuffle back in 1999? Thanks to a potent concoction of viral and apocryphal marketing, the film caused a bit of a furor amongst the movie-going public, with heated debates over the story’s strongly implied authenticity. However, by the end of the movie’s fifteen minutes of fame, even the most ardent of the ‘it’s real’ crowd succumbed to reason and accepted it as a work of fiction. Now, imagine if those fifteen minutes were stretched to a hundred, and into a film that tries to prove the veracity of itself and the contended sequence of events it’s documenting, while simultaneously looking like a clichéd found footage horror movie, and you have Grave Encounters 2, the sequel to the marginally effective 2011 predecessor.

Hey , boils and ghouls… Jeff here with another Toronto After Dark 2012 update for you all! Sunday was Day 4 of Toronto After Dark 2012, and as usual, it was longest day of the festival, with four different features and four short films. Usually by Sunday night, folks are hitting what I call the Tadff Wall… You’re tired from several days of back-to-back films, late nights at the pub, and – for those of us who review films and cover the festival – trying to find time to do your writing. This year was no different, and while it wasn’t a bad day of films, I have to say that it was fairly middle-ground; especially for a day with almost 12 hours of back-to-back screenings.
Things kicked off at 1pm with a short film called Frost, which I did not get a chance to see due to some subway delays. I heard the film was pretty crazy though,...

Grave Encounters was a found footage film that tried to set itself apart from others by claiming it was a ghost hunter’s show and that these are the events that really happened. Well, the sequel Grave Encounters 2 tries to fool the audience again with a film student who becomes obsessed with the first movie. He believes someone is trying to contact him from the original film to prove the footage was true.
Grave Encounters 2 stars Richard Harmon as Alex, a film student who is currently working to create the best and most original horror film. He has a weekly v-log where he discusses films of the genre and Grave Encounters is a film that he gives a horrible review to. Soon after he is contacted on his Youtube page by someone named “Death Awaits.” Not happy with how his film is going, he becomes more intrigued with...

Soon after he is contacted on his Youtube page by someone named “Death Awaits.” Not happy with how his film is going, he becomes more intrigued with...

Title: Grave Encounters 2 Director: John Poliquin Starring: Richard Harmon, Dylan Playfair, Stephanie Bennett, Leanne Lapp, Howard Lai, Sean Rogerson, Ben Wilkinson Using Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz’s found-footage horror flick “Grave Encounters” as a self-referential leaping-off point, “Grave Encounters 2″ gathers up a head of loose-limbed steam and bundles it up in a rather impressive technical package, but ultimately fumbles it away on a story that buckles under the weight of layered self-consciousness. Film student Alex Wright (Richard Harmon) is one of many folks obsessed with the original “Grave Encounters,” whose YouTube trailer was a viral sensation. Opinions on the movie are wildly divergent, but some people believe it to have [ Read More ]

I caught the first Grave Encounters at the end of a mini-marathon of rather terrible indie horror films, so once I realized I liked the movie, I was rather enthusiastic about it. Written and directed by Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz (aka The Vicious Brothers), Grave Encounters didn't re-invent any wheels, but it did prove to me (and several other people) that "found footage" horror could continue to hold some mystique outside of The Blair Witch Project, [Rec], and Paranormal Activity. The combination of found footage indie horror mixed with one of those innumerable "ghost hunter" series simply worked for me, and I admired the filmmakers for keeping things simple, straightforward, and kinda spooky.
The sequel, on the other hand, is a rushed, dull, uneventful, grating, tiresome, and ultimately infuriating piece of self-congratulatory nonsense that suffers from the same problems as Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 and (god help us...

Sequels are an essential part of the horror genre. Revisiting a particular horrific scenario allows us to experience new thrills in a familiar setting — when we watch a horror sequel, we're braver now that we know the world and its rules, making us feel more like participants in the terror rather than helpless victims.
Unfortunately, a good horror sequel is a rare thing. It's a daunting task to make a fresh experience out of a now-familiar world. But every once in a while, it works. And works wonders.
With Halloween on the horizon and us in the mood for some franchise-friendly scares with the likes of "Paranormal Activity 4," "Silent Hill: Revelation 3D" and "Grave Encounters 2," we've compiled what we believe to be the Top 9 Horror Sequels. Please feel free to add the 10th in the comments section should the mood strike you as well.

One of the sequels I was really waiting for. What did I think of it ?? In 2011 Grave Encounters was a found-footage horror phenomenon from the Vicious Brothers, with a trailer garnering over 20 million views on YouTube. Many people believed it was just a movie. They were wrong, and film student Alex Wright is out to prove it in Grave Encounters 2. "While researching the events depicted in the original film and the subsequent disappearance o…...
