Actress of the year, the incredible Kani Kusruti, who can play anything, discusses the impact Of All That We Imagine As Light and more in this special interview with Subhash K Jha.
Only a myopic kalaa-blind art-myopic industry would cast the powerhouse performer Kani Kusruti as an assistant to Huma Qureshi in Maharani. Indeed, the sinfully accomplished Kani has proved herself the real Maharani of movie acting with All We Imagine As Light. Kani is now being feted across the world. But she is not getting carried away. The Malayali powerhouse started with a bit part in 2003 as a bus passenger speaks of her incredible journey so far.
In 2024 Kani had to as many as three releases. She says it was a mere co-incidence. “I actually did Girls Will Be Girls first, in 2022. October, November is when we shot for it. And All We Imagine Has Light happened in 2023. But,...

Manoj Bajpayee is familiar with the crime genre. His breakout role was that of Bhiku Mhatre in one of the greatest Hindi films of all time, Satya, where we got a peek into a version of Mumbai’s underworld. Then he was in Shool, which focused on crime and politics in Bihar. He played Veerendra Pratap in Raajneeti, which was an amalgamation of Mahabharat and The Godfather. He was integral to the evolution of the landscape of Hindi cinema that was triggered by Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur duology. He is currently the face of the Silence franchise. Through The Family Man and Killer Soup, he has shown he is incredibly comfortable with flexing his acting chops through the episodic format on the small screen. So, I think it’s pretty normal to be hyped about his next project. But I’d advise you to keep your excitement at bay,...

Killer Soup
Starring Manoj Bajpayee, Konkona Sen Sharma, Nassar, Sayaji Shinde
Directed by Abhishek Chaubey
No wonder Manoj Bajpayee thinks Abhishek Chaubey to be the best director he has worked with. Look at the performance that Chaubey gets out of Manoj in Sonechiraiya and now Killer Soup.
There are two Bajpayees in Killer Soup, one of them with his wild hair and pained expression looks quite like Chaubey Himself. The other Manoj Bajpayee goes around with a mutilated eye which would be unbearable to look at were it not attached to the face of an actor who can make even the most unbearable character trait bearable with the sheer grit of his performance.
Manoj is at once fiercely satirical and slyly poignant as a puppet on his wife’s string. Konkona is everything evil, plus more. She seems to enjoy the opportunity to portray toxicity. I wish the thunderously scattered...

Actor Anbuthasan, who plays the role of Asi Thupalli in the dark comedy thriller series ‘Killer Soup’, shared that teaming up with director Abhishek Chaubey totally changed the game for him, adding it wasn’t just about playing a role but the unexpected life lessons along the way.
Layered with complex character arcs, the series boasts a stunning visual and captive narrative. Loosely inspired by a news headline, this work of fiction, starring Konkona Sensharma, and Manoj Bajpayee narrates the gripping tale of an ambitious housewife pursuing her dream of owning a restaurant and perfecting a soup recipe, only to be entangled in a web of lies and cover-ups.
At the heart of it is the character of Thupalli, who, under the guidance of director Abhishek Chaubey, discovered more about himself than he ever imagined.
Talking about the same, Tamil actor Anbuthasan said: “Teaming up with Abhishek Chaubey totally changed the game for me.

While Killer Soup follows the story of Swathi, a woman who wants to start her own restaurant, I believe there are many parallels between her and Appu’s story. Yes, it’s a murder mystery where a dozen people die all around Swathi, seemingly just by existing near her. It’s also about her passionate ambition to open this restaurant that she’s been dreaming of for years. In an ideal world, by the time we get to the timeline of the show, Swathi should’ve been well into running her restaurant, seeing as she had been married for 20 years and her husband is the reason she’s come into money and luxury. While he claims he’s given her everything she’s ever wanted, he’s never bothered helping her achieve her biggest dream (waste fellow). Now Appu is Arvind’s daughter. We can assume she’s at least 25 years younger than Swathi,...

Killer Soup is Netflix’s latest in its piping roster of thriller shows (as well as shows about food). The Indian show is an almost Shakespearean comedy of errors-style story that is fun and fast-paced. At its heart, the show is about Swathi Shetty, a wife, a mother, and a woman who aspires to start her own restaurant in the center of her town, Mainjur. She’s wanted this since she can remember, and was promised by her husband that it would eventually happen for her; however, 20 years have passed and it’s all still the same. For now, Swathi’s story is quite a common one in the Indian household scenario. You’d imagine she would’ve let go of her dream with all these years gone by, but she’s very hopeful still. Her journey has only just begun, and something tremendously bizarre is about to happen that...

Killer Soup is India’s answer to the “eat the rich,” “let’s use food as a metaphor for life” situation happening across world cinema. In the last year, I’ve seen food shows in a dozen languages that fall under the morbid-thriller genre that we all love so much. Given the situation, India needed to buck up, and here we are with the Konkona Sen Sharma-Manoj Bajpayee starrer Killer Soup. Prabhakar Shetty, aka Prabhu, and Swathi Shetty are a happily married couple who live in Mainjur, Tamil Nadu. They’re a fairly rich family with a son who’s moved out for college. The show begins with Swathi making what seems to be her delectable “paya soup.” However, immediately after receiving a bowl of it, Prabhu is disgusted. He discards it when Swathi isn’t looking, and she steals some money from his wallet simultaneously. This scene depicts their relationship perfectly.

My first impression of Killer Soup was that this is a picturesque location that I would like to go to. Visually, this is an impeccable show. From the color grading that brings out the gold on everyone’s skin as if to say “We’re rich and fabulous” and simultaneously reminds us that this is a show about thieving and deceit to the stunning landscapes of small-town Tamil Nadu, everything is very tastefully presented (if you know what I mean). Before I go on screaming about how the stylization of this show makes it worth watching, I’ll give you a heads-up on what it’s about. “Killer Soup” is what one could call a biryani that looks delectable but keeps giving you cardamom and pepper kernels in every mouthful. This is a thriller about love, lies, deceit, passion, the rich, and the undeserving. Killer Soup follows the life of Swathi Shetty,...

Few television shows have achieved the staggering success of Seinfeld.
The sitcom ran from July of 1989 to May of 1998 on NBC across nine seasons. It was a critical and commercial success, and is widely considered one of the biggest pop culture phenomenons and one of the most defining TV shows of the ’90s.
It even spawned dozens of popular sayings, like “no soup for you” and “yada, yada, yada,” and popularized terms like “man hands,” “regift” and “shrinkage.”
Of course, the show’s success has also meant its talented co-stars have also amassed a great deal of money along the way. They’ve also gone on to take on major new projects and achieve incredible things in their careers after the series ended.

A-lister Manoj Bajpayee, one of the few Indian actors who scores critical acclaim and commercial success in equal measure, has notched up another triumph with ZEE5 Global film “Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai.” The film is the most viewed original on the service in the last one year.
Directed by Apoorv Singh Karki (Prime Video series “Flames”) and written by Deepak Kingrani (Disney+ Hotstar series “Special Ops”), the film is a courtroom drama based on the real-life case of a once-revered and powerful Indian religious leader who is currently serving a life term in jail for the rape of an underage girl. Bajpayee plays the prosecuting lawyer who is pitted against a phalanx of celebrity lawyers.

Billing it as an industry first, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment has launched a reward program across its entire streaming ecosystem in partnership with Italy-based social media and entertainment app TaTaTu.
Viewers signing up for the program on Crackle, Redbox or Chicken Soup’s eponymous AVOD service, along with hundreds of Fast channels, will earn coins. The coins can then be used to bid on prizes and buy products.
The reward program uses Ttu Coins, which the company said in a press release are different from cryptocurrency. TaTaTu, which was founded in 2020 by film producer Andrea Iervolino, set a global content deal with Chicken Soup earlier this month.
The program launch comes as Chicken Soup for the Soul continues to regroup in the wake of swallowing Redbox in 2022 in a $375 million deal. Like others in its peer group, the company’s stock has taken a beating because of its exposure to streaming,...

A collection of inspirational essays and mantras, the new tome is an extension of the duo’s online mental health platform, which launched in 2020 and features soul-affirming content submitted by (often anonymous) writers in the form of letters as a means of free therapy.
“We wanted to build a place that was safe, where people could feel connected,” Guest says of SeptemberLetters.com. It’s overseen by editorial director Stacey Lindsay, who has evolved the platform to include profiles, stories exploring happiness and additional mental health resources.

The world of free, ad-supported streaming has grown tremendously over the past year. New free ad-supported streaming TV (Fast) channels and services seem to pop up on a daily — and even hourly — basis. Most of those outlets provide traditional, familiar content from decades past that viewers can tune in to as a way to pass the time, because the shows and movies were low-stakes, unserialized shows from years ago. On Monday, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (Csse) announced that it was bringing a bit of prestige to the world of FASTs.
The company announced that its free streaming platform Redbox Free Live TV is welcoming 12 fast channels from AMC Networks. The channels will include the various series from “The Walking Dead” Universe, the IFC sketch comedy show “Portlandia,” and the New York sports-focused Msg SportsZone. The channels are all set to launch in the coming days and can be...

The expansion of free streaming services continues unabated. On Wednesday, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (Csse) shared some details on its ever-expanding reach and upcoming original programming at the Iab Newfronts in New York. A month after launching a new advertising sales division known as Crackle Connex, Csse reports having an audience of over 80 million monthly active users, up 100% year-over-year.
This rapid expansion was aided by the company acquiring Redbox last May, giving Csse an out-of-home presence, but the majority of the growth comes from the addition of over 160 channels on the company’s free ad-supported streaming TV (Fast) and ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) services.

Csse also benefited from the addition of Crackle and Redbox buttons on [Vizio Smart TV] remotes, making the free streaming services even easier to access and front-of-mind for viewers. Thanks to new deals with the likes of Crunchyroll, Funimation, Vidgo,...

Redbox isn’t just a big, red disc rental kiosk at your local grocery store any longer. The Redbox app still offers users the ability to rent or purchase movies, but it also offers a wide variety of entertainment through both on-demand video and free ad-supported TV (Fast) channels.

That variety is getting a little wider in the coming weeks, as Redbox’s parent company Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (Csse) has announced that the service will bring on a total of eight new Fast channels from different providers. Chicken Soup says its channel count will rise above 180 soon, and that users should expect more channel additions in the coming months.
“Our Fast streaming platform gives cost-conscious consumers access to thousands of hours of free content available on over 160 touchpoints,” Csse chief digital officer Adam Mosan said. “These additional channels will offer entertaining programming...

After acquiring Redbox in August, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment says it is finally poised to see a bigger return on its investment.
“The return of theatrical titles is firmly underway. This return, however, began in earnest, months later than we had anticipated when we acquired Redbox. When looking at 2022 there was only a small trickle of big budget wide release hits that broke the year long theatrical drought. Films like Top Gun: Maverick, Black Adam and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. But the frequency of the releases was sporadic and very slow,” CEO William J. Rouhana, Jr. told investors Friday.
Now Rouhana says the frequency of wide releases is back, starting with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and he now expects one new major wide release every weekend through the rest of the year. Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment expects to see that impact in its second quarter results.
