Character Narayanan Krishnan is based on a real-life chef turned social worker whose name is also Narayanan Krishnan.
Director Anwar Rasheed and screenwriter Anjali Menon first met on the sets of Kerala Cafe on April 2009. During lunchtime, Anjali asked "where is this biryani from?", to which Anwar answered with the name of the hotel.
The makers wanted this film to be dq's debut film but DQ had already committed to the makers of second show.
