You would think that as technology advances, visual art forms such as film – including home media – would see a definite improvement in quality. But here we are yet again, getting bummed out over how studios have taken cleaning up transfers too far, polishing iconic movies into a “pristine” oblivion. And yes, they may have once more botched another James Cameron 4K Blu-ray. Game over, man!
The latest example comes via the 4K release of James Cameron’s Aliens, which came out on March 12th. As HD Report noted via a side-by-side comparison, even the high-definition transfer released 14 years ago is more respectable than the 4K one out just last week: “When comparing the two, the old Blu-ray is a better representation of celluloid at a time when filmmakers are trying to make images look less digital.” Hell, you can even see how Newt feels about it in the second image!

Perhaps you've had this experience:
You hear about an interesting movie or show, or you remember an old favorite, and you reason that since it's a well-known title, it's several years old, and you subscribe to several streaming services, you should be able to watch it for free somewhere.
Then you conduct the research that's necessary to find anything in the vast streaming landscape, and you realize that you're gonna have to shell out to rent or buy this thing.
Or worse, that film or series simply is not available. Anywhere.
If you're lucky, you can go on Amazon and have the DVD delivered in a couple of days, but you haven't seen your DVD player since Obama was in office, and you need something to watch now.
From comedy classics like Cocoon to Oscar winners like Il Postino to beloved children's movies like The Brave Little Toaster to action...

Never bet against James Cameron. The man is responsible for some of the best and highest-grossing blockbusters of the last 40 years, and yet every time he makes a new (and admittedly risky) movie, everyone is skeptical about its chances of success. Granted, Cameron himself saying "Avatar: The Way of Water" had to become one of the highest-grossing movies of all time just to break even does sound ludicrous and nearly impossible, but still! Jimmy C delivers.
Of course, hindsight is 20/20, and it is easy to see now that the "Avatar" franchise just prints money, but before 2009 there were plenty of reasons to be doubtful of a brand-new sci-fi movie making that much money. This means that James Cameron faced naysayers, particularly studio execs who thought they knew how to deliver the highest-grossing movie of all time better than the guy who had done it already.

James Cameron’s Aliens will still be arriving on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK this April after all, just a few weeks later than originally planned.
Next week, over in the US, the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release of James Cameron’s Aliens lands in store. It does so alongside releases of The Abyss and True Lies, and in the case of each of these, the UK has a slightly different story to tell.
The Abyss has been cancelled altogether, for falling foul of the BBFC. More on that here. True Lies has been put back to 1st April, but is still very much on the way, and you can find more on that here.
As for Aliens? Well, it mysteriously disappeared off the schedules altogether last week, instead sitting at a holding date of the end of the year. The film had been due on 4K disc...

The results are in, and Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender seems to be a hit.
The live action adaptation topped the streamer’s weekly English-language TV list with 21.2M views in its opening weekend. According to Netflix, it reached the Top 10 in 92 countries. It was edged out as most-watched title of the week by the Swedish natural disaster film The Abyss.
That’s a strong showing for the eight-episode series, which was another big swing for Netflix as it continues to dip its toes into anime-inspired content. In fact, Avatar managed to surpass One Piece in its debut weekend.
As with One Piece, Netflix was firing on all cylinders to launch the series, partnering with Serena Williams and even taking over the Las Vegas Sphere. So far, the Avatar global social campaign has reached 1.53B impressions, which is on par with both One Piece as well as Netflix’s hit series Wednesday.

Through Sunday, “Mean Girls” was the highest-grossing domestic film two months into 2024.
Its total is $15 million less than, though still quite close to, the longer-running “Anyone but You” (Sony), similarly with significant female appeal. But the results for the first week with both available show that Will Gluck’s Australian-set rom-com is doing much better at home than the musical remake of the hit 2004 high school clique satire.
Meanwhile, little is more normal than a new original Tyler Perry film placing immediately at #1 on Netflix. “Mea Culpa,” starring Kelly Rowland as an attorney who takes on a tough murder defense to enhance her chances at partnership at her firm, is the hyphenate’s first film since 2022 and third consecutive production for the streamer.
“Anyone but You” has a slight edge over “Mean Girls” in its pricing. The former can be digitally purchased for $19.99, while that price yields a 48-hour rental...

Los Angeles, Oct 2 (Ians) Filmmaker James Cameron almost lost his life on the set of “The Abyss”.
The 69-year-old director helmed the 1989 science fiction film about a deep sea research team trying to recover a lost Navy submarine but found himself in a life-or-death situation when he was shooting underwater and the oxygen tank was running out but he had no way of contacting the photographer above the surface.
“We had the ‘angels’, which were the safety divers that were right there, and each one was assigned to one or two of the actors and just kept them in sight the whole time. (But) they weren’t watching me,” he told Variety, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“Everybody’s setting lights and nobody’s watching. I’m trying to get (underwater director of photography) Al Giddings’ attention on the (public address). But Al had been involved in a diving accident, and he blew out both eardrums.

James Cameron wasn’t as confident staring into “The Abyss” in 1989.
The Oscar winner explained during a Beyond Fest panel moderated by IndieWire’s Jim Hemphill that the underwater sci-fi action film was the “first really big, kind of mega-budget movie” in his career. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio starred as divorced petroleum engineers who are hired to assist a Navy Seal (Michael Biehn) in recovering a nuclear submarine. The 20th Century Fox film had a budget of $43 million and grossed $90 at the worldwide box office before winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
“Well, this was my first really big, kind of mega-budget movie,” Cameron said onstage. “It wasn’t kind of a slam dunk in the way ‘Aliens’ was. Like, we just knew ‘Aliens’ worked. This one, we didn’t know exactly how it was going to work.”

A place on earth more awesome than anywhere in space. There’s everything you’ve ever known about adventure, and then there’s…a 4K restoration of The Abyss! James Cameron has confirmed that a 4K home video release of his 1989 film The Abyss will be emerging from the depths sometime soon.
Speaking at Beyond Fest (via Variety), which hosted a special screening of The Abyss, James Cameron confirmed, “All of the mastering is done and I think it drops pretty soon — a couple of months or something like that…There’s a lot of added material that they’re sticking in there, and it will be available on streaming simultaneously. But I didn’t just want to look at the old HD transfer. I wanted to do it right.” As it turns out, the screening of The Abyss was in fact a 4K version, allowing the director to show...

James Cameron appeared Wednesday at Los Angeles genre festival Beyond Fest for a q&a about “The Abyss” after a screening of the film’s seldom-seen two hour and 51 minute Special Edition. During his conversation with moderator Jim Hemphill, Cameron confirmed completion of the 4K restoration he announced last year, physical and streaming versions of which he said were “out of his hands” but all work has long been concluded. “All of the mastering is done and I think it drops pretty soon — a couple of months or something like that,” Cameron said in response to an audience question. “There’s a lot of added material that they’re sticking in there, and it will be available on streaming simultaneously.
