Indonesian helmer Joko Anwar (The Forbidden Door, Modus Anomali) has recently wrapped production on his sixth feature film and after a long history of embracing the trappings of genre film Anwar is going full bore into horror with this one. With his latest effort Anwar has tackled a remake of 1980 Indonesian cult horror title Pengabdi Setan, or Satan's Slaves. If the reputation of the original is to be believed it's a crazy one - one that has drawn comparisons to Don Cascarelli's Phantasm over the years - and one that Anwar has long considered a favorite. If you want a taste of the original I'm including the Japanese trailer for it below along with the above image, which is the first still from the...

Joko Anwar has made a name for himself as one of Indonesia’s most popular directors, earning critical and commercial success for his dark thrillers, Kala, The Forbidden Door and Ritual. Arriving at the recent Osaka Asian Film Festival, where he also sat on the Competition Jury, the director brought something a little different, a touching drama set on the streets of bustling, modern Jakarta. A Copy of My Mind is the richly detailed tale of a young working-class couple and their everyday lives until an unfortunate act sets the pair on a tragic path. Sari (Tara Basro) is a movie-loving beautician who half-heartedly strives to improve her lot by moving to a better salon while her boyfriend Alek (Chicco Jerikho) makes a living adding subtitles...

Modus Anomali (Ritual)
Written by Joko Anwar
Directed by Joko Anwar
Indonesia, 2012
It’s a sad thing when the need for a twist dampens wonderful use of sound and created tension. The first fifty minutes of Modus Anomali are very tense, with atmosphere oozing off the screen. This is thanks in large part to the way that the film handles sound. The tense atmosphere never truly goes away, and the use of sound remains magnificent throughout. However, there comes a point when the film decides it is more interested in a twist than what it has been creating.
The majority of Modus Anomali is silent. Not silent as in silent cinema, but silent as in there’s a decided lack of a soundtrack or score. The film relies on the sounds of the forest, the footsteps of its characters, and the unnerving reverberations of breathing in a quiet setting. The...

3 Venues… 5 days… 36 films!
Yes, Northern England’s premier horror film festival, Grimmfest, is back for 2013, this time taking place at three venues across the north – including two in Manchester – allowing for a much bigger programme for this year. After the launch on October 2nd at Stockport Plaza, Grimmfest 2013 will continue from October 3rd – 6th, at the Dancehouse Theatre, And the Lass O’Gowrie, Manchester. There’s a number of films scheduled this year that (as of yet) haven’t played any other UK film festivals, so there’s bound to be something showing that you haven’t seen, or maybe might not, see again!
One of my good friends James Cullen Bressack is back this year with another of his films, the excellent and innovative To Jennifer, after making a huge splash last year with the controversial Hate Crime. Other highlights, for me, include Thanatamorphose, On Air, Home Sweet Home and The Butterfly Room.

Ritual was originally titled Modus Anomali (Strange Way). This title was filmed in the jungles of Indonesia. And recently, this film was picked up by Screen Media Films for release in North America, this Summer. The film's story does not reveal much. Essentially, a husband (Rio Dewanto) and father loses his family, while on vacation. A strange figure follows John and this figure subjects John to all sorts of torture. John is buried, beaten and put through a series of tests. This man will have to use every internal resource to reunite with his family, or face death several feet below ground. The trailer for Ritual has recently been released. And, the clip is a compelling look at the feature. Asian horror fans are encouraged to take a look below and prepare for the film's release August 27th, 2013. Release Date: August 27th, 2013 (DVD). Director/writer: Joko Anwar. Cast: Rio Dewanto,...

We have to admit to not knowing a whole lot about - Joko Anwar’s Indonesian horror flick - Modus Anomali until the guys over at Subtitlemeplease dropped us a line to say it’s arrived outside of its home country on DVD, and now they have, we’re glad they did. Because it looks superb! The only down side to the news is the country in question that’s got the release is Germany, but as Modus was actually filmed in English, that wont present any real hardship on the language front, or for the multi-region savvie. So if you’re in the mood a taut serial killer horror thriller, why not check it out. Synopsis: A man is on a holiday in the woods with his wife and two kids when they are surprised by the arrival of an uninvited guest. Before he understands what’s going on,...

Welshman Gareth Evans is part of a new mood of creativity in Indonesian cinema, ready for global competition despite the country's lack of film infrastructure and political support
• What global box-office stories would you like to see in After Hollywood? Let us know in the comments below
"He is very kind and very polite. We are known as a polite people. But Gareth Evans is more Indonesian than most Indonesian people." So says film-maker Joko Anwar, speaking of the current flagbearer for Bahasa cinema. Since he moved to Jakarta four years ago, Evans, a softly-spoken scion of the Brecon Beacons, has resurrected the Indo martial-arts film. His latest, a careening piece of John Woo-esque ultraviolence called The Raid, is winning the country some overdue global exposure, thanks to its Sony Pictures Classic deal. He chuckles when he hears Anwar's comment: "He would say that!" What does he mean? "Oh – it's a private joke.

In writer/director Joko Anwar's latest film Modus Anomali, a mysterious man is on a holiday in the woods with his wife and two kids when they are surprised by the arrival of an uninvited guest.
Suddenly, he experiences a time lapse and before he can understand what’s going on, he finds himself alone and separated from his family. As he comes across several alarm clocks that seem to have been planted throughout the woods, indicating something far sinister than just keeping time, he knows that the race is now on if he ever wants to see his family alive again.
As a filmmaker known for his strong visual style in previous films like The Forbidden Door and Dead Time: Kala, Dread Central had the opportunity to sit down and chat briefly with Anwar while in Austin last week for the 2012 SxSW Film Festival to hear more about...

Joko Anwar's newest film features a cabin in the woods, but otherwise bears no resemblance to anything coming out of Hollywood. Modus Anomali is a confounding, mystifying experience that initially feels like a minimalist exercise, an identity crisis both for the lead character and the filmmaker. And then it revolves into a true head-scratcher, a picture that definitely belongs in the 'Wtf' horror sub-genre. Though I have yet to catch up with Anwar's first feature, Janji Joni, I have seen Dead Time: Kala and The Forbidden Door, which are both heavily-stylized, wildly colorful, and "trippy" in the best sense of the word. Kala, especially, left me in the dark; I couldn't always figure out what was going on, story-wise, but I didn't especially care:...

I don’t know what kind of magical mind muddling substances were dissolved into the water coolers during SXSW Festival Programming, but after last night’s World Premiere of Joko Anwar’s Indonesian Horror/Thriller ‘Modus Anomali’, I am beginning to think that perhaps half of the panel just didn’t show up.
Now about this time during a review I would probably go into great detail describing the intricacies of the plot and perhaps the deep seeded sociological issues contained within. The problem is that with Modus Anomali, there was almost no hint of any substantial story. Basically a man wakes up buried alive in the woods, returns to his cabin to discover his wife murdered and children missing, and then proceeds to run around for 80 minutes shouting obscenities in broken English. That’S It! You could plausibly get up after the opening scene, go out and have a nice steak dinner,...
