Mumbai, March 8 (Ians) Hindi cinema has always been known for impactful dialogues, and despite its old male bias (which is tilting in the right direction lately!), it is no longer the men who deliver a punch in the lines they mouth.

Ians takes a look at some of the most iconic dialogues by Bollywood women that have defined power, resilience and pride.
The first dialogue on the list is by Sonam Kapoor from her film ‘Neerja’ in which she says, “Haunsla rakh, usse saari samasya hal ho jaati hai.” The dialogue beautifully conveys that when the going is tough, courage is what gets people going. Courage changes the character of a person and makes them better equipped to deal with any situation.

A new research report by the School of Media and Cultural Studies at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Tiss), Mumbai, reveals that on- and off-screen women and queer representation in box-office hits remains largely stereotypical.
This statement in itself says a lot. It says, women and queer representation remains stereotypical in box-office Hits. Going by the summary of the research it can be concluded, as it does not matter how female actors are cast, it is the male actor who carries a film and it becomes a hit!
The research is exhaustively titled ‘Lights, Camera, and Time for Action: Recasting a Gender Equality Compliant Bollywood’. Such a clichéd title!
The research was carried out by Tiss and funded by the US Consulate General in Mumbai. The report was released by the brand new celebrity, Guneet Monga Kapoor, thanks to her Oscar-winning feature, ‘Elephant Whisperers’, Vidya Balan and Nandita Das,...

Tumhari Sulu
Starring Vidya Balan, Manav Kaul, Neha Dhupia, Vijay Mourya
Directed by Suresh Triveni
One extra star in this flawed and often loosely structured film for Vidya Balan’s extraordinarily empathetic performance as a middleclass housewife, okay homemaker, with serious concentration issues.
You see, our Sulochana, aka Sulu can’t focus on any one thing (but then this film can’t focus on the issue at hand either) not even her growing son who, as it turns out, becomes conveniently problematic as the narrative progresses. A scene later in the film in the principal’s office of Sulu’s son’s school made me cringe in the way similar sequences of reprimanded parents never made me feel in English Vinglish or Hindi Medium.
The progress report of Sulu’s life runs in direct proportion to the storyteller’s(feeble) ability to keep the momentum alive.
Or perhaps ‘progress’ is...

Call Aamir Khan a perfectionist, and he’ll lightheartedly brush off the label, preferring to describe himself as simply “passionate” instead. Terminology aside, a mere glance at his 28-year career is ample proof that for Khan, going the extra mile is practically the equivalent of slacking off—the 51-year-old actor, producer, and director usually travels another 10 for good measure.
He did it in 1998’s “Ghulam,” when he turned down a body double or special effects in favor of sprinting towards an oncoming train for a stunt, avoiding it by a mere second and gambling his life for the sake of realism.
In 1999, when a script about 19th century villagers protesting British land tax with a game of cricket was dismissed by every financier in Bollywood, Khan took on his first producing role alongside his acting credit to make the film. Three years of grueling production later, “Lagaan” became the third...

Audiences are raving about Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan’s latest release, Dear Zindagi. While the actors are getting all the praise for their effortless and charming performances, director Gauri Shinde is also being hailed for connecting with the audience once again. Her debut film English Vinglish that gave insights about the hopes and aspirations of Indian housewives, tugged at the heartstrings of viewers and became a big box office grosser. It turns out that Dear Zindagi is heading the same way.
Says the director Gauri Shinde, “Whether it was English Vinglish or now Dear Zindagi I am constantly surprised by the reaction to my cinema.”
“I am always very grateful and surprised, and I am like – ‘Wow! Oh my god!’ Yes, that is my response usually [laughs]. You never know how deeply can the audience think and connect, and when that happens, you feel touched. I received many messages on social media,...

Some people struggle to find sympathy for Shia Labeouf, a talented young actor whose career has so violently careened from studio blockbusters to outsider art projects that it often seems like he’s trolling the entire planet, but to watch him in Dito Montiel’s disastrous “Man Down” — to see how hard he throws himself even into a movie that nothing else going for it — is to recognize once and for all that Labeouf is a performer who never shows up without the full courage of his convictions.
A well-intentioned but woefully misconceived genre mishmash, “Man Down” positions itself as a quasi-allegorical plea for Americans to take better care of their veterans, but even its best ideas are half-baked, and Montiel’s direct-to-video budget has no hope of affording his ambition. And yet, Labeouf doesn’t seem to have gotten the memo; he leans into every line like he’s...

Often presented as a glossy corporate fantasia in the country’s government-approved commercial cinema, China tends to look like a very different place in the independent films that manage to escape its borders (and receive prominent exposure at festivals around the world).
Hardly a new phenomenon, this dichotomy seems to have grown even more severe with the last two generations of Chinese directors — while googly-eyed studio claptrap like “Monster Hunt” slays at the box office, scrappy, auteur-driven fare like Li Yang’s “Blind Mountain” and Diao Yinan’s “Black Coal, Thin Ice” paint the People’s Republic as a bleak wasteland where many laws don’t apply, and the ones that do seem sadistically designed to test the morality of the people they’re imposed upon. And, of course, to serve as prompts for some very dark thrillers.

Bollywood has shown that is more than welcome to new scripts in the last few years. The number of pleasantly surprising films has increased considerably, even if it’s a tad slow. One of these such films was English Vinglish by Gauri Shinde. The movie was more than just a comeback film for the epic actress Sridevi, it became a story of the household hero we see every day in our parents. Dear Zindagi follows a similar pattern in displaying before us a journey that any individual regardless of gender, age, profession or emotional capacity could go through. So let’s dig in.
The journey of a person can be considered a boring and predictable backdrop for any film. Every person will come across situations in life that they have a default reaction to. Some may be good where we laugh and are happy, and some may be bad where we cry or get angry.

Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Dear Zindagi’ is winning hearts worldwide with its beautiful portrayal of emotions, fresh storyline and stellar performances by its lead actors. The movie, which took off with a strong start, has struck gold and collected a whopping Inr 32.50 crore at the box office on its opening, this weekend. On Friday (November 25), ‘Dear Zindagi’ which released over 1200 screens in India and 600 screens overseas, saw almost 45 percent occupancy in theatres which eventually increased in the evening shows. It isn’t easy being Gauri Shinde. Not when you have made English Vinglish as your debut film, for God’s sake! Where do you go from that dizzying summit of achievement?
Clearly and unconditionally, in her second film, monumental in its own right, Gauri is not bogged down by expectations. She is, in that sense, exactly like her protagonist in Dear Zindagi (played with supreme sang-froid by Alia Bhatt, more about her later). Not eager to be liked by all, unafraid to appear unconventional, fiercely prideful about her emotional space and passionately attached to her individualism, Gauri Shinde, like her fey protagonist, Kaira, grooves to her own beat. And if want to join in, we are most welcome. Otherwise there’s always the next Karan Johar mush-room to munch on …

Shah Rukh Khan: Srk aka the King of Romance is stepping out of the box and essaying the role of a counselor who helps Alia’s character Kaira overcome her depression whilst also sharing with her some life’s ‘ke funde’ (antics).
The pairing of Srk-Alia Bhatt: Judging by the teasers onlyiIf the quirky banter between the two is anything to go by it has already made the film seem a bona fide movie.
Gauri Shinde: Gauri Shinde’s second directorial film. We already loved after her debut English Vinglish and are excited to see what she has in store for us in Dear Zindagi.
The Story: Dear Zindagi tells the story of Kaira, a budding cinematographer in search of a perfect life.

From the second the world learned about Gauri Shinde’s upcoming “Dear Zindagi,” anticipation for the film skyrocketed. Not only would it be the writer-director’s first project after the surprising success of her 2012 debut — you’d be hard-pressed to find a Bollywood fan who didn’t adore the life-affirming comedy-drama that was “English Vinglish” — but her sophomore effort would star Alia Bhatt, who’s quickly becoming one of the most acclaimed and popular young actresses in Bollywood alongside Shah Rukh Khan, who has been hailed as literally “the biggest movie star in the world.” The pressure was on—or so one would think.
But neither the heavyweight performers nor the massive shadow of “English Vinglish” seem to have intimidated Shinde; unfazed by the weight of audience expectations, she stays true to telling her story, and “Dear Zindagi” once again showcases her unique ability to tug at our hearts and...

Some movies revel in mysteries so well that they don’t require solutions. French director Lucile Hadzihalilovic’s “Evolution” provides an ideal example. Ten-year-old Nicolas (Max Brebant) spends his days in an isolated seaside hospital, along with several other children, all of whom are subjected to an alarming medical process. His mother, and the other women who tend to the boys, obscure the reasons behind the confined setting. When Nicolas spies on them after dark, he gets no closer to answers — but the puzzle pieces gradually congeal into a pileup of transgressive sexuality, body horror and strange laboratory experiments. Nicolas doesn’t put it all together, but as he learns to look harder, he takes action against the ominous events around him. It’s the year’s wildest coming of age story.
Buried in the Vanguard section of the Toronto International Film Festival last year, “Evolution” defies simple categorization. Hadzihalilovic...

R. Balki's cinema can never be considered complete until Amitabh Bachchan makes an appearance in the film. Big B has played the lead in all the films that Balki has directed so far. And now, when there was no scope for Big B to play the lead in Balki's new film Ki & Ka, Balki has scripted a specially-written cameo for Big B where he appears as himself. Says a source, "It's a scene featuring Amitji and Jayaji playing themselves. It's brief, but, memorable scene. This time, Balki wanted both the Bachchans in his film. Jayaji had appeared in the credit titles of Balki's Paa, but, she has never been an actual part of any of his films." Incidentally, this is not the first time that Big B has played himself for Balki.
