Mumbai, Aug 25 (Ians) Actress Navika Kotia, who essayed the role of Sridevi’s daughter in the 2012 film ‘English Vinglish’, is set to essay the role of Kesar in the upcoming television show ‘Kyunki… Saas Maa, Bahu Beti Hoti Hai’.

Her character is described by the makers as “ambitious” but she knows how to balance her own dreams along with the dreams of her family. She has a never give up attitude.

A new research report by the School of Media and Cultural Studies at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Tiss), Mumbai, reveals that on- and off-screen women and queer representation in box-office hits remains largely stereotypical.

This statement in itself says a lot. It says, women and queer representation remains stereotypical in box-office Hits. Going by the summary of the research it can be concluded, as it does not matter how female actors are cast, it is the male actor who carries a film and it becomes a hit!

The research is exhaustively titled ‘Lights, Camera, and Time for Action: Recasting a Gender Equality Compliant Bollywood’. Such a clichéd title!

Fifth Season Distribution Team

Fifth Season, the TV company previously known as Endeavor Content, has announced a raft of executive appointments that constitute a major expansion of its Europe-Middle East-Africa television distribution team.

Jennifer Ebell has been promoted from senior VP of Emea sales to executive VP of Emea sales and acquisitions. Under this expanded role, Ebell will now oversee the company’s London-based acquisitions team, which is led by Liz Tang, who was recently promoted from director, content to executive director, acquisitions. Ava Mustos also joined the team in January as associate director of acquisitions from BBC Studios, reporting to Tang.

Additionally, Fabio Tinchant has been promoted from executive director sales, French Europe, Cee, Mena & Turkey to VP sales for the same markets, with the addition of southern Europe to his remit. Based in Rome, Maria Grazia Ursino has also joined as director, southern Europe.

Exclusive: Mumbai-based filmmakers Gauri Shinde and R. Balki, the co-founders of Hope Productions, have brought UK-based distribution executive Pranab Kapadia onboard to co-produce two of their upcoming features.

Founded in 2011 after the success of Cheeni Kum and Paa, Shinde and Balki’s banner Hope Productions launched with the hit pic English Vinglish, which marked the comeback of famed actress Sridevi. The company’s credits since include award winners and box office hits such as Padman, Ki & Ka, Dear Zindagi, and Mission Mangal.

Kapadia is a 20-year-plus veteran of the movie business. He started at Zee before leading the UK subsidiary of Reliance-owned Adlabs, and then moving to Eros International as President Distribution – International. Singer Shilpa Rao collaborates with composer-singer Amit Trivedi for a new track titled Raavan.

The song is sung by Shilpa and Trivedi, who has also composed and written the number.

"I was in a studio recording for 'Shaabaashiyaan' from 'Mission Mangal'. There was this track and Amit asked me, 'Can you just put down some idea whatever comes to you?' In one take, I just sang that part for the song 'Raavan'. Adil Hussain, prominent star of Indian independent cinema, will be present at the Busan International Film Festival as the male lead of two Indian world premieres.

In Vijay Jayapal’s “Nirvana Inn,” Hussain headlines alongside Sandhya Mridul (“Bridge”) and Rajshri Deshpande (“Sexy Durga”). At an earlier stage, the film was at the Busan Asian Project Market in 2018 and subsequently received post-production support from the festival’s Asian Cinema Fund.

Producer Boney Kapoor, whose maiden Tamil production venture "Nerkonda Paarvai" debuted in Singapore on Tuesday, says he has managed to fulfil his late wife and veteran actress Sridevi's dream.

According to reports, while shooting for the 2012 film "English Vinglish", Tamil star Ajith had promised Sridevi that he will do a film with her husband Boney.

Indian drama film “Mom,” which marks the one of the final on-screen performances by actress Sridevi, is set for theatrical release in China from next month. Sridevi died in February last year, seven months’ after the India release of “Mom” in July 2017.

The film is set for release in China on March 22. It is being imported on revenue sharing terms and will partner with Sparkle Media for the Chinese outing.

“We will be giving the film as big a release as some of the bigger Bollywood films. We hope for a successful run in China especially since the audience there, we feel, will be able to relate to this powerful story of a strong female character’s journey,” a spokesman for India’s Zee Studios told Variety.

Two of the iconic actors of Indian cinema, Sridevi and Shashi Kapoor, passed away within a span of few months. While Shashi Kapoor passed away in December 2017, Sridevi passed away in the month of February 2018. Now, the veteran actors will receive tributes at the New York Indian Film Festival which will unfold from May 7 to May 12. Shashi Kapoor, who had starred in several Merchant-Ivory films such as The Householder, will be paid tribute via two of his film screenings- Shakespeare Wallah and Heat and Dust. Further talking about the screening and the audience feedback Sridevi added that while the screening itself went off smoothly, there were ladies who couldn't contain their emotions. If that wasnt all the English Vinglish and Mom diva added that seeing their reaction proved the power of cinema when used as a proper tool of expression.

One extra star in this flawed and often loosely structured film for Vidya Balan’s extraordinarily empathetic performance as a middleclass housewife, okay homemaker, with serious concentration issues.

You see, our Sulochana, aka Sulu can’t focus on any one thing (but then this film can’t focus on the issue at hand either) not even her growing son who, as it turns out, becomes conveniently problematic as the narrative progresses. A scene later in the film in the principal’s office of Sulu’s son’s school made me cringe in the way similar sequences of reprimanded parents never made me feel in English Vinglish or Hindi Medium.

The progress report of Sulu’s life runs in direct proportion to the storyteller’s(feeble) ability to keep the momentum alive.

Bollywood legend grants Netflix exclusive streaming rights to his upcoming projects.

SVoD giant Netflix has signed a multi-film deal with Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan, who has more than 80 Bollywood credits to his name.

The star’s production company Red Chillies Entertainment will give Netflix exclusive streaming access to future releases over the next three years, making them available to the platform’s 86 million subscribers worldwide as soon as they are released.

The contract also grants Netflix access to titles in Red Chillies’ back catalogue, including past hits such as Happy New Year, Dilwale and Om Shanti Om.

Often presented as a glossy corporate fantasia in the country’s government-approved commercial cinema, China tends to look like a very different place in the independent films that manage to escape its borders (and receive prominent exposure at festivals around the world).

Hardly a new phenomenon, this dichotomy seems to have grown even more severe with the last two generations of Chinese directors — while googly-eyed studio claptrap like “Monster Hunt” slays at the box office, scrappy, auteur-driven fare like Li Yang’s “Blind Mountain” and Diao Yinan’s “Black Coal, Thin Ice” paint the People’s Republic as a bleak wasteland where many laws don’t apply, and the ones that do seem sadistically designed to test the morality of the people they’re imposed upon. And, of course, to serve as prompts for some very dark thrillers.

And as refreshing as it looks, Srk and Alia starrer is all out celebrating life and we see the two actors create a never seen before chemistry in the film. The actress will now be felicitated for her contribution to the Indian film industry at the upcoming Iifa in Madrid, Spain. Sridevi will be flying to Spain to accept the Outstanding Achievement Award, Iifa 2016 for her work in Indian cinema.
