Hoda Taheri, the director, based the story on a friend of hers. The friend was an Iranian asylum seeker in Germany who considered marrying a German female friend of hers so she could stay in the country.
The actresses who play Hoda's and Magdalena's mothers in the film are writer/director/actress Hoda Taheri's and writer/actress Magdalena Jacob's real-life mothers.
