In a carriage battle about pay TV’s future, one of the original cable channels became an unexpected flashpoint.

Freeform, the Disney-owned cable channel that caters to younger women, was dropped from Spectrum channel lineups as part of Disney’s landmark deal with Charter Communications. It was no small decision, with Freeform in some 74 million homes at the end of last year, and with Charter’s nearly 15 million cable TV households no longer having access.

“When we looked across the portfolio to try to identify where the greatest value in this deal was to us, we definitely made some trade-offs,” Disney Entertainment co-chairman Dana Walden told The Hollywood Reporter after the Spectrum deal was announced. She noted that channels like Freeform already served as a pipeline of programming for streaming services like Hulu.

Disney+’s upcoming comedy series The Muppets Mayhem has added Tahj Mowry (Baby Daddy) to the cast, Deadline has confirmed. He will star opposite Lilly Singh for the series developed and written by The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg, Muppets vets Bill Barretta and Jeff Yorkes.

The Muppets Mayhem follows The Electric Mayhem Band as they go on an epic musical journey to finally record their first studio album.

Exclusive: A mysterious new character is moving to Riverdale. Chris O’Shea has joined the CW series in a major recurring role.

O’Shea will play Percival Pickens, Riverdale’s newest resident. Although he presents as charming (and is), Percival’s also manipulative, powerful and increasingly dangerous as he comes into conflict with our characters, most especially Archie. A descendent of one of Riverdale’s founding fathers, General Pickens, Percival wants to turn Riverdale into a “utopia,” a dark agenda he pursues quietly but ruthlessly.

Season 6 picks up where Season 5 ended, with Archie (Kj Apa) and Betty (Lili Reinhart) deciding to give their romantic relationship another shot, just as a bomb planted by Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos) under Archie’s bed was about to go off. Strangely, that bomb seemingly doesn’t explode, and when Archie and Betty wake up the next morning, they’re living in the town of Rivervale,...

Brooke Bowman has been promoted to executive vice president of drama development and programming at Fox Entertainment.

She succeeds Charlie Andrews in the role, with Andrews exiting the company. The parting with Andrews is said to be on good terms, with his contract simply coming to an end.

Bowman was previously senior vice president in the Fox drama department. She will now report directly to Michael Thorn, president of entertainment at Fox Entertainment. She will be based in Los Angeles.

“Brooke has been an important and trusted part of our team, playing an invaluable role in helping shape and implement our blueprint to expand and diversify Fox’s slate,” said Thorn. “Supremely creative, well-respected across town and fearless in taking big swings, she is primed to take over the reins; and I’m excited to have her alongside as we steer our drama strategy well into the future.”

Exclusive: Charlie Andrews has stepped down as EVP, Drama Programming and Development at Fox Entertainment after fours years as head of the broadcast network’s drama department. He is succeeded by Brooke Bowman, most recently SVP, Drama Programming and Development, who has been promoted to EVP, Drama Programming and Development.

Based in Los Angeles and reporting to Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn, Bowman will supervise the development and production of new and returning scripted drama series for the network.

Andrews, a well liked development executive, took over the Fox drama department in November 2017. His departure was amicable; I hear his contract was up and he left to pursue bigger responsibilities elsewhere as the top executive deck at Fox is pretty stacked.

Netflix’s new comedy series Pretty Smart is really only one of those things.

The sitcom’s 10-episode first season stars Emily Osment (Young & Hungry) as Chelsea, a “smart” girl whose life is turned upside down during a three-day visit with her “pretty” sister Claire, played by Olivia Macklin (Filthy Rich). If you’ve already managed to unravel the meaning behind the show’s title, congratulations, it’s incredibly high-concept.

Exclusive: Joe Carroll has joined the cast of Apple TV+’s Five Days at Memorial, from John Ridley, Carlton Cuse and ABC Signature. He joins Vera Farmiga, Cherry Jones, Adepero Oduye, Julie Ann Emery, Cornelius Smith Jr. and Molly Hager.

Written by Ridley and Cuse based on the acclaimed nonfiction book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Sheri Fink, Five Days at Memorial chronicles the first five days in a New Orleans hospital after Hurricane Katrina made landfall. When the floodwaters rose, the power failed and the heat climbed, exhausted caregivers were forced to make life-and-death decisions that haunted them for years to come.

Carroll will recur as Michael Arvin, a business development executive tasked with finding life-saving resources for people in distress hundreds of miles from his own location.

Five Days at Memorial is written and executive produced by Ridley and Cuse, and both will serve as directors on the limited series.

Exclusive: Australian actor Luke Cook has joined the second season of the Hulu Original Comedy Dollface in a recurring guest star role.

Dollface follows Jules (Kat Dennings), a young woman who – after being dumped by her longtime boyfriend – must deal with her own imagination in order to literally and metaphorically re-enter the world of women and rekindle the female friendships she left behind.

Dollface stars Dennings, Brenda Song, Shay Mitchell and Esther Povitsky. The series was created by Jordan Weiss, who serves as an EP alongside showrunner Michelle Nader; Margot Robbie, Brett Hedblom and Tom Ackerley for LuckyChap Entertainment; Bryan Unkeless and Scott Morgan for Screen Arcade; Dennings; and Nicole King. Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official trailer for a very meta indie comedy called Welcome Matt, the feature directorial debut from filmmaker Leon Pierce Jr. The film is not only commentary on the process of making a film, but is also a story about staying home even though it doesn't reference or have any connection to the pandemic (or to lockdowns). Matt, a well known writer and director, suffers a traumatic experience on the verge of his big break, that leads to him becoming deathly afraid to go outside (due to agoraphobia). Therefore he decides to attempt to write, direct, and star in a feature film, all from his apartment. With the help of an in-home therapist, he makes an effort to overcome his fears. Exclusive: Elizabeth Boykewich, a 16-year Freeform/ABC Family veteran, has departed the Disney cable network where she most recently served as SVP, Casting and Talent.

Boykewich is the latest senior executive to depart Freeform following the regime change at the network last May when Tara Duncan was named President. Lauren Corao stepped down as EVP, Original Programming and Development in October; Lynn Barrie departed as SVP Original Programming and Development last month.

Boykewich, who was promoted to SVP in 2016, was responsible for overseeing all casting and talent deal negotiations for the studio and network’s original programming including movies, pilots, live action series, animation, alternative and reality programming. Series under Boykewich’s oversight included hits Pretty Little Liars, The Fosters, Good Trouble, Grown-ish, The Bold Type, Switched at Birth Shadowhunters, Stitchers, Baby Daddy, Young & Hungry and recent additions Motherland: Fort Salem and Everything’s Gonna Be Ok.

Tisha Campbell, Essence Atkins, Tahj Mowry, Isaiah Mustafa, and Beth Grant have all been cast in ABC’s multi-cam comedy pilot “Black Don’t Crack,” Variety has learned.

The group joins previously announced series star Sherri Shepherd. The show follows three former sorority sisters who lost touch after college and reunite during a pivotal point in their lives. The show marks a reunion for Mowry and Atkins, who previously starred together in the Disney series “Smart Guy.”

Campbell will play Tasha Marks, described as a hip and fabulous Atlanta restaurateur who starts trends instead of following them. She holds nothing back and is brutally honest (sometimes to a fault) with her friends, but has been avoiding a truth in her own life. She’s achieved the perfect professional life and insists that she needs no man in her life to interfere with the career she’s worked so hard to create.

ABC is rounding out cast for multi-camera comedy pilot Black Don’t Crack (fka Untitled Regina Hicks). Essence Atkins (Marlon) and Tisha Campbell (My Wife and Kids) are set as the two remaining leads opposite Sherri Shepherd, and Tahj Mowry (Baby Daddy), Beth Grant (Words on Bathroom Walls) and Isaiah Mustafa (It: Chapter Two) join as series regulars in the pilot from writer/executive producer Regina Hicks and exec producers Viola Davis & Julius Tennon and Larry Wilmore.

Black Don’t Crack (fka Untitled Regina Hicks) follows three former sorority sisters, played by Shepherd, Atkins and Campbell, who lost touch after college and reunite during a pivotal point in their lives. They realize sometimes it’s okay to crack and when you do, no one will be there for you like your friends.

Atkins will play Nia Hillis Davis. A bougie, conservative politician’s wife who has lost touch with her more fun-loving college self.

Exclusive: Chelsea Harris, who currently recurs as Sykes in the second season of TNT’s sci-fi thriller series Snowpiercer, has been promoted to series regular for the upcoming third season.

Harris’ Sykes is a covert operative and the right-hand advisor to Mr. Wilford, played by Sean Bean. Sykes is reserved and coolly efficient. She is well-versed in the dark arts of intelligence and, while she seems loyal, one begins to wonder whether she can be trusted at all.

Harris has recurred since the first episode of Season 2 and will appear in eight episodes this season.

Based on the novel and 2013 film, Snowpiercer, starring Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs and Bean, is set more than seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland. It centers on the remnants of humanity who inhabit a perpetually moving train, with 1001 cars, that circles the globe.

Exclusive: Jean-Luc Bilodeau, who lead Carol’s Second Act opposite Patricia Heaton, has signed with APA.

Bilodeau, who appeared in the CBS comedy as Dr. Daniel Kutcher, also starred in Freeform’s Baby Daddy for six seasons. The actor’s additional credits include a series regular role on ABC Family’s Kyle Xy and a guest star spot on Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce. He has also acted in Casa Vita, All in Time, Expecting Amish and Lionsgate’s Lol.

He will still be repped by Alchemy Entertainment, Cue Management, and Goodman Genow.

Tony Hale’s cartoon chicken Archibald is moving from Netflix to Peacock for “Archibald’s Next Big Thing Is Here.”

Netflix ran two seasons of a series titled “Archibald’s Next Big Thing,” which will continue streaming on that platform. This new season — which is technically a new series based on Hale’s feathery character — consists of six episodes, which will launch Feb. 18 on NBCU’s Peacock.

Per “Archibald” studio DreamWorks Animation, “Archibald’s Next Big Thing Is Here” is the next chapter for Archibald Strutter, a chicken who “yes-and’s” his way through life. While his adventures don’t always go as planned, Archibald takes it one step at a time with the help of his three siblings, Sage, Finly and Loy, and his trusty sidekick, Bea.

A series adaptation of the Oscar-nominated 1991 film — which was itself adapted from the 1987 novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe — is in development at the network with McEntire attached to star, per our sister site Variety.

Starring Sam Keeley (Dublin Murders), Jeremy Tardy (Dear White People), Gage Golightly (Teen Wolf), Cristina Rodlo (The Terror Season 2), Beth Riesgraf (Leverage), Lamont Thompson (NCIS: LA), Nicholas Coombe (Imaginary Mary) and Derek Theler (Baby Daddy), 68 Whiskey followed a multicultural mix of men and women deployed as Army medics to a forward operating base in Afghanistan nicknamed “The Orphanage.” Together, they endure “a dangerous and Kafkaesque world that leads to self-destructive appetites, outrageous behavior, intense camaraderie and, occasionally, a profound sense of purpose,” says the synopsis.

Mary Pat Gleason, a prolific character actress with more than 100 TV and film credits, including CBS’ sitcom Mom and A Cinderella Story, died of cancer June 2, according to a post on her Facebook page. She was 70.

Born in Lake City, Mn, Gleason began her decades-long career in 1982 with a role in NBC soap opera Texas. She went on to star as Jane Hogan in daytime drama The Guiding Light, and won a daytime Emmy as part of the writing team on the show, which ran for 72 seasons on CBS.

Since then she has appeared on dozens of television series including Full House, Dear John, Murphy Brown, Empty Nest, L.A. Carol’s Second Act has flatlined: CBS has cancelled the Patricia Heaton-led medical comedy after one season, TVLine has learned.

Through its 18-episode freshman rotation, Carol’s Second Act averaged a 0.63 demo rating and 5 million total viewers (in Live+Same Day numbers), down 25 and 17 percent from what CBS’ Murphy Brown revival did in the time slot the season prior. Among the eight sitcoms CBS has aired this season, it ranks a distant last in both measures.
