In a carriage battle about pay TV’s future, one of the original cable channels became an unexpected flashpoint.
Freeform, the Disney-owned cable channel that caters to younger women, was dropped from Spectrum channel lineups as part of Disney’s landmark deal with Charter Communications. It was no small decision, with Freeform in some 74 million homes at the end of last year, and with Charter’s nearly 15 million cable TV households no longer having access.
“When we looked across the portfolio to try to identify where the greatest value in this deal was to us, we definitely made some trade-offs,” Disney Entertainment co-chairman Dana Walden told The Hollywood Reporter after the Spectrum deal was announced. She noted that channels like Freeform already served as a pipeline of programming for streaming services like Hulu.
And while the deal saw a number of other channels were dropped in the deal, the dropping of Freeform suggests that,...

Today in news that will totally make you smile (I hope!), I'm thrilled to be the one to remind you there's a new Muppets series coming to Disney+ -- one that takes a deep dive into the rockin' world of The Electric Mayhem Band, aka that band of Muppets that is a regular fixture in most Jim Henson properties. Cute, right? Needless to say, I'm ready for "The Muppets Mayhem"— and the trailer is a major reason why.
In the show's sneak peek, we get reacquainted with the band and find out they've made a mark on some of the world's most famous musicians, including Tommy Lee, Chris Stapleton, and Lil Nas X. But the trailer drops a bomb on us: the legendary group has never actually made a record together. This show chronicles what exactly happens on Mayhem's quest to finally produce an album, many years after the height of their music career.

Reba McEntire has set her next Lifetime original movie with Reba McEntire’s The Hammer. The country music legend will executive produce and star in the film, which reunites her with Reba co-star Melissa Peterman (Young Sheldon) and also stars Kay Shioma Metchie and Rex Linn. McEntire and Peterman played Reba Hart and Barbra Jean Booker-Hart (“B.J.”) in Reba from 2001 to 2007. B.J. had an affair with Reba’s husband, Brock Hart (Christopher Rich) while their marriage was on the rocks and married him after their divorce. McEntire and Peterman had a previous on-screen reunion in ABC Family’s Baby Daddy, and now they’ll play sisters in The Hammer. The movie is inspired by the real life of traveling circuit judge, Kim Wanker, “who hands down justice unlike anyone else,” as Lifetime describes. McEntire will play Wanker, who will be named Kim Wheeler in the movie. As the logline teases,...

"It's just not safe out there." Gravitas Ventures has debuted an official trailer for a very meta indie comedy called Welcome Matt, the feature directorial debut from filmmaker Leon Pierce Jr. The film is not only commentary on the process of making a film, but is also a story about staying home even though it doesn't reference or have any connection to the pandemic (or to lockdowns). Matt, a well known writer and director, suffers a traumatic experience on the verge of his big break, that leads to him becoming deathly afraid to go outside (due to agoraphobia). Therefore he decides to attempt to write, direct, and star in a feature film, all from his apartment. With the help of an in-home therapist, he makes an effort to overcome his fears. Tisha Campbell, Essence Atkins, Tahj Mowry, Isaiah Mustafa, and Beth Grant have all been cast in ABC’s multi-cam comedy pilot “Black Don’t Crack,” Variety has learned.
The group joins previously announced series star Sherri Shepherd. The show follows three former sorority sisters who lost touch after college and reunite during a pivotal point in their lives. The show marks a reunion for Mowry and Atkins, who previously starred together in the Disney series “Smart Guy.”
Campbell will play Tasha Marks, described as a hip and fabulous Atlanta restaurateur who starts trends instead of following them. She holds nothing back and is brutally honest (sometimes to a fault) with her friends, but has been avoiding a truth in her own life. She’s achieved the perfect professional life and insists that she needs no man in her life to interfere with the career she’s worked so hard to create.

Tony Hale’s cartoon chicken Archibald is moving from Netflix to Peacock for “Archibald’s Next Big Thing Is Here.”
Netflix ran two seasons of a series titled “Archibald’s Next Big Thing,” which will continue streaming on that platform. This new season — which is technically a new series based on Hale’s feathery character — consists of six episodes, which will launch Feb. 18 on NBCU’s Peacock.
Per “Archibald” studio DreamWorks Animation, “Archibald’s Next Big Thing Is Here” is the next chapter for Archibald Strutter, a chicken who “yes-and’s” his way through life. While his adventures don’t always go as planned, Archibald takes it one step at a time with the help of his three siblings, Sage, Finly and Loy, and his trusty sidekick, Bea.
