In Variety‘s Up Next, we asked four Oscar winners to pick the one person who represents the future of Hollywood.
Jared Leto loves a good transformation, as exhibited by his latest performance in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” — where he’s unrecognizable under layers of prosthetics as Paolo, the black sheep of the fashion family. The Oscar-winning actor (who won an Academy Award in 2014 for “Dallas Buyers Club”) is a fan of “dancing on the edge” as he’s building a character. “Let’s try and fail here,” Leto tells himself before shooting a scene.
When he looks down the road, Leto chooses Kelvin Harrison Jr. as “Up Next.” The 27-year-old actor — who had breakout roles in “It Comes at Night” and “Waves” — can be seen in Joe Wright’s musical adaptation of “Cyrano” playing Christian. “He’s making interesting choices already,” Leto says. “I know he’s...

The Golden Globes’ TV supporting categories continue to be serious business. “Schitt’s Creek” stars Dan Levy and Annie Murphy lost their respective categories Sunday night, prolonging a decade-long drought for comedy performers.
Levy fell to John Boyega (“Small Axe”), while Murphy was defeated by Gillian Anderson (“The Crown”).
The last performers from a comedy to win Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress were “Glee” stars Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch, respectively, 10 years ago, as part of a big night for the Fox hit, which also nabbed Best Comedy/Musical Series. Since 2000, there have only been five supporting champs from a comedy across both catch-all categories: Robert Downey Jr. (“Ally McBeal”) in 2001, Kim Cattrall (“Sex and the City”) in 2003, Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”) in 2008, Colfer and Lynch.

Dan Levy and Annie Murphy won supporting Emmys as part of “Schitt’s Creek” 7-for-7 sweep in September, but they’ll have a way tougher time pulling off that twofer at the Golden Globes. That’s not just because “Schitt’s Creek” likely will not clean up at the Globes like it did at the Emmys, but because the Globes’ supporting TV categories are no laughing matter.
Should Levy and Murphy pull out wins, they’d be the first comedic performances in a deacde to win the catch-all supporting categories. “Glee” stars Chris Colfer and Jane Lynch were the last performers from a comedy to score the supporting Globes, giving the Fox musical two of its three wins in 2011, the other being Best Comedy/Musical Series. Crank up the Bowie: Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) has signed on to star in Paramount+’s series adaptation of The Man Who Fell to Earth.
The sci-fi series, first ordered by Paramount+ (currently known as CBS All Access) back in August 2019, centers on an alien (Ejiofor) “who arrives on Earth at a turning point in human evolution and must confront his own past to determine our future,” per the official description. It’s based on the Walter Tevis novel of the same name, which inspired a 1976 film starring glam rocker David Bowie in the title role.

Congratulations are in order for Patricia Arquette!
The actress was a big winner on Sunday’s 2020 Golden Globes, taking home the trophy for best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a series, limited series or motion picture made for television.
Her win came for the work she did in the The Act. She beat out stars Helena Bonham Carter (The Crown), Toni Collette (Unbelievable), Meryl Streep (Big Little Lies) and Emily Watson (Chernobyl).

After years away from the spotlight Renee Zellweger made a comeback this fall with her performance as Judy Garland in the biopic “Judy,” but her comeback actually started several months earlier with her starring role in the Netflix limited series “What/If.” We already know she’s a Golden Globes front-runner for “Judy” (and the Oscars front-runner too), but could she get a surprise second Globe nom for her role on the streaming series?
“What/If” isn’t the kind of program you’d typically think of as awards bait. It’s a provocative thriller from Mike Kelley, who previously created the similarly sexy primetime soap “Revenge.” But the Globes often love a juicy soap. They awarded Best TV Drama Series to twisty relationship dramas like “Nip/Tuck” (2005), “Grey’s Anatomy” (2007) and “The Affair” (2015), and they gave Best TV Comedy Series to “Desperate Housewives” (2005-2006) and “Ugly Betty” (2007). “Revenge” also earned a 2012 Globe nomination for scene-stealing villainess Madeleine Stowe.

With an acting career that spans work for Cecil B. DeMille and Joseph Losey to Quentin Tarantino and David Lynch, Russ Tamblyn’s creativity and longevity is proof that there’s life after child stardom. In Tamblyn’s case, there’s also been a bounty of juicy film and TV roles long after his legendary legs no longer kicked up movie musicals such as “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” and “West Side Story.” His decades in film and TV include all genres, from Robert Wise’s suspense classic “The Haunting” to George Pal’s colorful kidfare, such as “Tom Thumb” and “Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm” and Lynch’s “Twin Peaks” series. It’s a career he explores in his upcoming memoir, “Dancing on the Edge.”

There are plenty of things you can say about the upcoming remake of Disney's classic The Lion King, but "the cast sucks" certainly isn't one of them. The voice cast is chock-full of big-name stars, from Donald Glover as Simba to Beyoncé as Nala to John Oliver as Zazu. There's even a bit of casting nostalgia: the legendary James Earl Jones and his unmistakeable voice will be returning as Mufasa, the same character he voiced in the 1994 original movie. And if you've been to the movies at all in the past few years, chances are you also recognize the actor who's lending his voice to Scar, the villainous usurper at the heart of the conflict, voiced by Jeremy Irons in the original film.

British phenomenon Bodyguard has exploded on to the Golden Globes nominations with two nods including a somewhat surprising inclusion in the Drama category.
The Jed Mercurio-penned series led a good morning for Brits with Killing Eve and A Very English Scandal also scoring highly with HFPA members.
Bodyguard, which is produced by ITV-owned World Productions, is thought to be the first truly original BBC drama to be nominated in the Best Television Series – Drama category at the Golden Globes. The six-part show airs on Netflix in the UK and while the Svod service is understood to have been a partner since the show’s early production stages, it was picked up by Netflix’s co-licensing team.
The terror thriller was the biggest new drama hit for the British public broadcaster in over ten years with 11 million people tuning into live to its finale back in September. However, its inclusion in the U.

When it comes to TV at the Golden Globes, the newer the better. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association often awards shows when they’re shiny and new like first-year Best TV Drama Series winners “Mr. Robot” (2016), “The Crown” (2017) and “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2018). By that standard, the 55-year-old “Doctor Who” doesn’t fit the bill, but what’s old is new again. The show has gotten renewed attention thanks to its brand new cast led by the show’s first ever female Doctor, Jodie Whittaker. As the show’s own marketing campaign has said, “It’s about time.”
“Doctor Who” is about a time-travelling alien who assumes different forms, but the 13 actors who previously played the title character over the course of more than five decades were all men, even though it was established in the show’s canon that he can change gender as well. When writer Chris Chibnall...

“It is striking that the actors went in and singled out Cameron Britton for a show that got no other nominations,” Tom O’Brien tells me and fellow Gold Derby contributors Charles Bright, Zach Laws and Amanda Spears in our slugfest about the Emmy race for Best Drama Guest Actor (watch above). Britton is now the odds-on favorite to win for his breakthrough performance in “Mindhunter,” but our group is skeptical about his front-runner status over fellow nominees F. Murray Abraham (“Homeland”), Matthew Goode (“The Crown”), Ron Cephas Jones (“This is Us”), Gerald McRaney (“This is Us”) and Jimmi Simpson (“Westworld”).

Sam Heughan is more than just a pretty face. He’s a skilled and talented actor whose portrayal of Jamie on “Outlander” should not be overlooked again by the Emmys, though he missed the cut in the first two seasons of Starz’s popular time-travel romance. Can he overcome the Emmys’ “Slap the Stud” curse?
The Emmys have had a long history of slapping handsome leading men — it took them eight years to finally give Best Drama Actor to Jon Hamm for “Mad Men” and six years to even nominate Kit Harington for “Game of Thrones.” But could the tide be turning? Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”) won Best Drama Actor just last year and his co-star Milo Ventimiglia was nominated alongside him. And relative youth didn’t stop actors like Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”), Rami Malek (“Mr. Robot”) and Riz Ahmed (“The Night Of”) from collecting trophies. Heughan deserves similar consideration.

Emmy voters know a good bargain when they see one, so they’re often eager to reward two performances for the price of one. Sally Field (“Sybil”) and Toni Collette (“United States of Tara”) won for playing multiple personalities. And Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) prevailed as a combo platter of identical clones. Now Emmy voters could give the nod to J.K. Simmons for playing two versions of the same man in the Starz sci-fi thriller “Counterpart.”
The series premiered in December 2017 and stars Simmons as Howard Silk, a United Nations bureaucrat in Berlin who works for an agency whose purpose he doesn’t quite understand. It turns out his agency oversees a gateway to a parallel world with another version of Howard who crosses between worlds on dangerous field missions.

Tobias Menzies said farewell to “Outlander” last season on his way to greener pastures — or, more golden pastures as least as he’s about to don “The Crown” as Prince Philip in season three of the Netflix series about the British royal family. Menzies played the devoted Frank Randall and his evil ancestor Black Jack in “Outlander” until Frank’s death last fall in the season three episode “All Debts Paid.” Now our readers think he deserves an Emmy nomination because “poor Frank is overdue for some love.” Scroll down for our complete poll results.
A whopping 93% of readers said Menzies deserves an Emmy bid for his final three episodes of “Outlander.” And it might just happen since being cast in a leading role in the Emmy winning “Crown” has raised his industry profile significantly. But he’s already been well known by his peers, even if he hasn’t always been a household name.

Tobias Menzies deserves a goodbye Emmy nomination for Best Drama Guest Actor for his last season of “Outlander.” Last fall Menzies ended his three-year run in the time-travel romance, in which he played dual roles as 18th century antagonist Black Jack and his 20th century descendant Frank Randall, the first husband of Claire (Caitriona Balfe). And the timing for Menzies could be just right since it was recently announced that he will be taking over the role of Prince Philip on “The Crown” from Matt Smith in its upcoming third season.
If you’re not familiar with Menzies by name you probably recognize his face as the character actor has worked in a number of award-winning shows. E.M. Forster‘s classic 1910 novel “Howards End” was most famously adapted into a 1992 Merchant Ivory film starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. It earned nine Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director (James Ivory), and it won three including Best Actress for Thompson. That’s a tough act to follow, but now, 26 years after that film, Forster’s novel has now been adapted into a four-part limited series on Starz that is garnering its own rave reviews. It’s rated 89% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and has scored 89 on MetaCritic, indicating near-universal acclaim. So now it has the potential to be as big a hit at the Emmys as the film was at the Oscars.
The series stars Hayley Atwell in the role that won Thompson the Oscar. She plays Margaret Schlegel, who seeks love and purpose in turn-of-the-century England. It’s directed by Hettie Macdonald, a BAFTA TV Award...
