Based on the actual missing person investigation of Cari Farver in Pottawattamie County by the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office from November 2012 until May 2017.
The Investigators who took the case after it had gone cold were Investigator Ryan Avis and Sergeant-Investigator Jim Doty. The Digital Forensics Tech was Tony Kava, who was arguably the most important member of the investigation due to his unmatched level of knowledge and experience with digital evidence and information.
Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office is located in Southwest Iowa (Council Bluffs), which is right across the Missouri River from Omaha, NE. The Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office ended up working a joint investigation with Omaha Police Department Homicide Division towards the end of it.
