Based on the hugely successful 10-part TV series of 1989, this 100-minute film version makes an interesting film, as the series did.
'Arende' is the incredible, inspiring story of an exiled man who would risk everything to return home. This is a well made Afrikaans film and features good acting from the veteran cast, especially Ian Roberts as Sloet Steenkamp. Sloet is a very determined, strong character, but it was also endearing to see him become emotional at times. It was interesting to see how his presence effected those around him. Gavin van den Bergh - famous for the TV series 'Ballade vir 'n Enkeling' in 1987 - portrays an English captain, Captain Kerwin, in an equally good performance. I enjoyed his compassion towards Sloet as he battled with duty versus friendship.
'Arende' is a wonderful example of a film untouched by politics and well before today's racial criteria for the South African industry. This is a film to treasure as you fondly remember the good old days of film making in South Africa when a captivating story was regarded high above all other elements.
