Horror seems to be making a comeback with a new wave of films now receiving both critical acclaim, as well as financial success at the box office. Just by attaching the names of writer/director James Wan or Production Company Blumhouse, seems to have enough momentum to make it a box office hit. So with the public now paying to get scared again, here are the top five horror films worth looking out for in 2017.
Death House (Release Date: Tbc)

With jump scare film franchises like The Conjuring (2013-2016) and Insidious (2010 -2018) dominating at the box office, it will take something special to change the trend, but that is something Death House is looking to initiate.
Based on an original concept by Gunnar Hansen to bring the icons of horror together the cast reflects his vision perfectly; and for any icons not featured in the original, 5 sequels are already planned for the franchise.

Highlighted by an incredible performance by Steven Weber, Crawlspace (review) is an enticing indie thriller that is sure to curl your toes and creep you out! The film's director and co-writer, Josh Stolberg (writer of Piranha 3Dd and Sorority Row), recently sat down with Dread Central to discuss it.
Stolberg talked about how this movie is a change of pace for him and where the idea came from. "It's a really personal film," Stolberg said. "I do a lot of studio movies, but it's nice to put together one of these indies and feel really proud of it at the end of the day, which I definitely am."
He continues, "I was working with a buddy of mine named Nick Taravella, who I co-wrote the script with, and he found a couple of real-life stories. I had been looking for another film to direct, it had been about a year...

But instead of being scared of finding menacing rats, he instead is surprised to discover an ominous man who’s ready to attack him. While the exterminator fights back to protect himself, his attacker finds pleasure in [ Read More ]

David Koechner is best known for playing the Ron Burgundy-obsessed Champ Kind in the Anchorman movies. But the comic actor is becoming something of a horror genre regular, thanks to his appearances in Piranha 3Dd, the not-exactly-a-horror-movie-but-still-plenty-horrific Cheap Thrills, the forthcoming Scouts vs. Zombies, and Crawlspace, which is now available to watch exclusively on Hulu Plus.
Directed and cowritten by Josh Stolberg (who also copenned Piranha 3D) and starring Steven Weber and Lori Loughlin, Crawlspace concerns a banker who, according to the official synopsis, “moves his family into a foreclosed home with a dark, eerie past.” Cue: gore and gruesomeness.

Wow. Just a month in and this regular post dedicated to the - shall we say - more idiosyncratic, less delicate of movies (or shall we just say “gory horrors and not-quite-b-movies”) has the splendid fortune of getting to review Stuart Gordon’s tongue-in-cheek classic, Re-Animator.
Produced by Brian Yuzna, the warped individual behind the brutal class satire/mutant cannibalism jaunt Society, and starring that rubber-faced icon of the midnight movie, Jeffrey Combs, this remains one of the crowning glories of 80s cult film-making. Re-Animator's essentially an outlandish, sillier take on Hp Lovecraft’s spin on the Frankenstein mad-scientist story, and Combs, who you’ll undoubtedly know from such box-office juggernauts as Doctor Mordrid and Cellar Dweller (reviewed here next month), plays brilliant-if-misguided medical student Herbert West.

Writer Josh Stolberg, who penned Alexander Aja’s Piranha 3D and the Dane Cook vehicle Good Luck Chuck, turns his hand to both writing and directing with his take of the formulaic “hider in the house” story, entitled The Attic (aka Crawlspace).

But behind the picture of suburban bliss is an altogether more sinister story. I enjoyed Alexandre Aja’s horror flick “Piranha 3D” enough to give screenwriter Josh Stolberg’s directorial effort “Crawlspace” a shot, and that’s overlooking the fact that he also penned the terrible 2007 Dane Cook comedy “Good Luck Chuck”. Although you can’t glean too much from the poster embedded below, the inclusion of cast members Steven Weber, Lori Loughlin, and Jonathan Silverman definitely gives off mixed signals. If nothing else, I’m intrigued. Here’s what the film is supposed to be about: The Gates family’s new dream home quickly turns into a living nightmare, in this disturbing thriller packed with suspense, horror and terrifying twists. In a charming and quiet suburban town, Tim (Jonathan Silverman – In Case of Emergency) and Susan Gates (Lori Loughlin – 90210, Full House) have found their perfect new house, and their lively daughter Kayla has just returned home from college to help with the big move alongside her brothers,...

At the start of the year, we learned of a new thriller entitled Crawlspace. Directed by Josh Stolberg (Piranha 3D, Sorority Row), the film stars Steven Weber, Jonathan Silverman, Lori Loughlin, Nicole Moore and Sterling Beaumon. Stolberg directed from a script he co-penned with Nick Taravella.
The significant thing about the production was that the film was pushed through the production outfit known as Vuguru, a company that finances its own productions and distributes them across various VOD platforms (you may have seen their project The Booth at the End on Hulu).
A promo poster for Crawlspace - about a killer terrorizing a family in his foreclosed house - has been unveiled and you can find it after the jump. Stay tuned for a release date.

A new article over at Fastcocreate reveals that Sorority Row and Piranha 3D writer Josh Stolberg is currently behind the camera for Crawlspace (formerly Hideaway), a new indie thriller aimed at VOD producer Vuguru. A small description reveals that the pic is "about a killer terrorizing a family living in his foreclosed house," a pretty obvious direction for a low budget slasher. Steve Weber (The Shining, Desperation) stars alongside Jonathan Silverman, Lori Loughlin, Nicole Moore and Sterling Beaumon all star. Take a peak inside for the first ever still featuring the invader sticking someone's head into a garbage disposal. That's pretty freaking cool.

Josh Stolberg is at work on a new thriller entitled Crawlspace and the very first image from the production has surfaced; the photo demonstrates the extreme use of a garbage disposal and you'll find a larger version of the image on the left after the jump.
The film has quietly been moving forward under the title Hideaway, but somewhere in its development the moniker changed.
Stolberg, if you recall, co-penned Piranha 3D and Sorority Row. His latest effort puts him in the director's seat of a rather low-budget production which is geared for the VOD producer Vuguru.
