I just watched 3 a.k.a "moonu" 2 months back. There are many things to be told about this movie. Firstly, this movie was written and directed by a debutant director, Aishwarya.R.Dhanush. Well, all I new about her was she was director Selvaraghavan's apperentice, and wife to actor Dhanush. Now about the movie, she has done an AMAZING job in the story, screenplay, and especially the touching dialogues. Despite being a debutant director and writer, she has done a perfect job in the way she portrayed Ram and Jananai's characters. It was as if we were living in their story. The music was equally brilliant by Anirudh Ravichander. If we think out of the box, only then this movie can be our cup of tea. Agreed that there were a few flaws; "Why this koleveri di" video, a bit exaggerated scenes of crying, etc. But, come on! This is just Aishwarya's beginning! I agree suicide in bipolar isn't normal, but it has been shown clearly that Ram doesn't take his medication properly and towards the end, avoids Senthil from accompanying him into his house before the suicide. This movie is underrated, and deserves a much better recognition. Don't miss it. It's a movie of a lifetime. :)
it is a movie for matured minds,so i kindly advise to the kids and those who are immature can prefer some other movies. The acting of dhanush is extraordinary,he gave his best shot and the movie carries a good message that "suicide is not the better solution to get reveled from all troubles".And i agree that shurthihassan was not apt for the role, because she doesn't seem to be a girl from middle-class family. And the BGM is the biggest plus for the movie, i hope anirudh have a good feature.First half had a good pace with more commercial elements but the second half showed off the acting skills of dhnaush, you cant expect much from a actor,he done his best.

this movie might not appeal to the mass crowd looking for a typical family masala entertainment. but for some one who will enjoy serious sensible cinema, 3 is a definite watch. Its true that Dhanush has continued his genre of psychotic streak from Mayakkam Enna into this movie as well. But as débutant director, Aishwarya has created a movie that will keep you hooked through the entire stretch.
The first half of the movie is light and fresh, and almost every teenager or adult will relate to it. the sweet and cute love story of two school kids, that grows into a relationship is well shown.
the second half of the movie is a true showcase of Dhanush's acting. the darker shades of the character keeps up the suspense effect of the movie.
i would definitely recommend this movie for anybody who wants to watch a sensible different movie, which isn't just a brainless entertainment.

3 is a 2012 Indian Tamil romantic psychological thriller film written and directed by Aishwarya R. Dhanush who made her directorial debut with the film. It stars Dhanush, who himself co-produced the film, alongside Shruti Haasan. The film gained high anticipation due to the viral marketing of the song "Why This Kolaveri Di". The story opens with the death of Ram (Dhanush). His wife Janani (Shruti Haasan) realizes that her husband did not die naturally, as she finds his room stained with blood spatters. She recalls memories from when they first met and the story starts with a flashback when Ram and Janani were 12th grade students...........

I just finished watching "3" and it is 3.30 a.m IST. I have watched the movie after more than a year the movie released in theatres in India. I had gotten mixed reviews for the movie from my friends. While some had totally written the movie down stating it was illogical, dark, and pointless, a few of my friends had described it as a masterpiece with brilliant performances. I have through time mastered the art of watching movies with an open mind without expectations even after the hype and hoopla surrounding a movie and even after reading several reviews. And that is exactly what I did while I started watching "3" too. The movie opens with the scene of a coffin with garlands surrounded my mourning people, and a visibly shattered Janani ( Shruti Hassan). The credits start rolling as the coffin is taken away and as Janani sits in her empty apartment, she hears the distinct voice of her husband calling out her name – "Janani" and that's when Aishwarya Dhanush chooses to reveal the movie's name – "3"!
Just with this opening scene giving me Goosebumps and a chill down my spine, I was assured that this movie is going to be an experience that I will remember forever. The entire narrative of the movie is split into three parts and hence the title. The first part shows the school days of Janani and Ram ( Dhanush), how their love blossoms and grows. You would be pleasantly surprised by how well Dhanush and Shruti register in your hearts as the high school Ram and Janani in just a single shot. They both look like high school kids every bit and this is by far the most happily enjoyable part of the movie. Sivakarthikeyan as Dhanush's friend Kumaran and Badava Gopi as the tuition teacher provide excellent humor. Special mention must be made to Gabriella as Shruti's deaf and dumb younger sister who steals our hearts in just the few scenes that she appears. From the beginning, Aishwarya keeps us on the edge of our seats making us keep guessing how Ram would have died and what would have caused his death. And, along with this, she gradually builds the love story of Ram and Janani that proceeds to the tying of the nuptial knot in a pub in the second part of the narrative. After this, once the police inspector reveals the findings of the postmortem of Ram, Janani is shocked to her core and goes around speaking to Ram's father and in search of Ram's closest confidant senthil ( played outstandingly by Sundar Raman). The facts that Senthil reveals about Ram forms the most important and pivotal part of the movie- the final part of the narrative. Yes, the movie is dark. Yes, the movie is not all about falling-in-love- getting-married-living-happily-ever-after. But, it deals with a very sensitive and a very important subject and we should all take a bow to Aishwarya for making such a bold attempt with her debut movie. It is quite evident in many scenes that Aishwarya has worked with Selvaraghavan. But that just goes to tell us what beautiful masterpieces Selva has made and how we are able to recognize his stamps. Dhanush, who has become a seasoned actor over the last decade, has given one of his career best lifetime performances. The man made me cry at many places just by his looks and expressions. This is yet another feather in his hat to mark the point that he has carved a niche for himself in Indian cinema and deserves many accolades and recognition in the world of cinema. Shruti has done complete justice to her role and makes us feel all the right emotions for all that she brings out of her on the screen. She has been negatively criticized for her crying scenes, but I personally felt she has done a great job in all scenes. Sundar Raman, as Dhanush's close friend who has to deal with Ram's secret and help his friend has etched a wonderful performance. Anirudh's "kolaveri" went on to become a viral hit all over the world much before the movie. But the young man has given some wonderful songs and background score throughout. All the songs have a underlying sadness to them keeping in line with the central theme of the movie. Prabhu, Bhanupriya and Rohini have done their parts to perfection proving the fact that they are veterans. The cinematography and editing of the movie sustain the thrill, darkness and the feel of the movie throughout. "3" is a brilliant and bold work about a very serious issue and will leave an impression on you that one can never forget. The movie will stay with you long after you have watched it and will haunt you forever. Yes, it is dark but it will not disappoint you. If you are looking for cheesy romance, corny songs, one-liners, a happy ending or if you are too weak and not strong enough to watch some serious, dark themed movie, then I'd suggest not watching it. But, I would strongly recommend "3" for those of you who like to watch a meaningful masterpiece with brilliant and extremely memorable performances.

Recently, had watched this movie on TV. I missed to watch this movie in theaters after hearing some avg reviews, have to blame myself and I regret for this decision. Probably, why this kolaveri? shouldn't have happened to this movie which created a different outlook of the movie expectation. Everyone would have expected a jolly, romance fun- filled movie, but it is not. There's saying don't judge a book by its cover. Why this kolaveri? song completely spoiled this movie from getting its cult status which it deserved to be. Now the movie has become a very underrated and people are not interested to watch again. Director has set the mood starting from first frame showing Ram (Dhanush) deadbody which clearly says its not your usual regular romantic-fun movie. This movie is not for the audience who wants to spent a few hours by crunching pop corn, frequently chatting/texting in mobile phone. This movie requires the audience time and heart to be spent to understand the main two characters Ram and Nandhini, and once you are ready to invest, director (aishwarya) and Music director (Anirudh) takes you to their world and in their life which throws a LUMP in your throat. I usually, watch movies very seriously without missing a frame on screen. I was imagining myself to be Ram and watching it. I was able to feel each and every emotions that character was going through and finally i cried out a loud nearing last few mins. Hats off to the director for making me cry and feel the pain of the lead characters.
This movie definitely need a patience watching and requires your time and heart to invest, you will reap great returns and its a wonderful experience that your heart is heavy with those returns
Missed to become a cult classic - but for me its more than that...

Lovely movie! Breathtaking performance by Dhanush! One of the finest actors of the present generation. His character will stay with you for some time even after leaving the cinema hall. Complimented well by Shruthi & the supporting cast. Won't be surprised to see Dhanush getting his second consecutive national award. And of course Aishwarya deserves a huge applause for making all this possible.Great direction indeed. Brilliant script. The 3 stages of couple's life has been shown brilliantly.

Movie did win some heart but fail to be called a block buster or hit. Overall it is a Romantic movie.

This is the first review I am writing, and I wanted to write about this film because it truly impressed me. Here it goes...
Finally, the movie which has created much hype, even without publicity, is here. The movie 3, directed by Aishwarya Dhanush, and starring Dhanush and Shruti Hassan in lead roles, portrays love in three different phases of life - school love, which is thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining; college love, which is realistic, and love after marriage. The film is a full-on love story, backed with a powerful story along with awesome performances and great music.
The movie is about the love and life of Ram(Dhanush), the son of a successful businessman(Prabhu), and Janani(Shruti), the daughter of a middle class parents, who meet in a perfect coincidence - Janani's cycle chain has come down and Ram is stuck up in traffic. Eventually, Ram goes and helps Janani, and this leads to love and marriage. They live a happy and a good life, until tragedy strikes the happily married couple. I do not wish to reveal more, because it would shatter the suspense and I want all of them to experience it on big screen.
First of all, the movie is titled as "3" because it portrays love in 3 phases of life. I was thoroughly satisfied with the movie, and I am left wondering why many people did not like the second half of the movie.
Aishwarya Dhanush has made a brilliant directorial debut with this movie. The way of direction and screenplay is highly impressive. And the bravery in giving this classy script to Tamil audiences also should be appreciated.
The performance by Dhanush is just the BEST, and although the National Award winner has given us great performances, this is his career best, according to me. His path-breaking performance makes the audience laugh and cry in appropriate situations. Shruthi Hassan also makes an impressive performance, and both of them are successful in portraying as school students, college students, and finally married couple. The supporting roles by Shiva Karthikeyan and Sundar are also impressive. The veteran actors Prabhu, Bhanupriya and Rohini also make their presences to be felt with their performances.
The music of the movie by Anirudh needs no introduction. The songs like Why this Kolaveri di? and Po Nee Po, are chartbusters. But the background score should be mentioned. It was highly impressive, and reveals the talent of the debutant composer.
The editing by Kola Baskar and the cinematography by Velraj does not spoil the mood of the film. "3" is also impressive technically. The single fight in the movie makes us believe that Dhanush, even though he is lean, could bash up 10 people. It was highly realistic too.
Overall, "3" should not be missed. It is a refreshingly new attempt in Tamil cinema. Great performances, impressive screenplay ,directing and music makes it a movie to be cherished. I think all people should appreciate for the hard-work of the people involved in the making.
My rating : 9 out of 10.

Fantastic movie,Mind blowing acting by Dhanush you deserve another Oscar man you really did a good job as a depressed person no one other than u can do this role, his friend sundar ramu(as sendhil)and shruthi have done a good job!!There is few loopholes in this movie which selvaraghavan would have fixed where aishwarya as a director failed but those who says its not a good movie, psycho things its also a part of some depressed people's life A new different film is not always welcomed in Tamil cinema.
If this movie released in English, french or Italy we would have said great and love it,so pity its released in Tamil that we don't allow different movie and appreciate few good things in the movie,BGM was good and its a fantastic feel for true lovers.Kolaveri movie came out with few loopholes this time but its really appreciated also thank you selva for introducing sundar ramu a wonderful actor.

Ever watched Donnie Darko? and remember how does it put us speechless in the final minutes..!! You could experience the same in this movie as well, a touch higher feel indeed.
3 - Starring Dhanush and Shruthi is an honest attempt of Romance genre in the recent past. The best part is that the romance depicted is simple and passionate as well. The movie is a mix of regular and rare happenings. First half of the movie, happens to everybody in their life, which is followed by not-so-regular happening in the second half.
The most important aspect of this movie is that, it also focuses on the after marriage part rather than just what the regular movies do.On this note this movie is not a regular romantic movie.
The significance of the movie are music by Anirudh and acting by Dhanush. All the support casts were equally good and Shruthi could have delivered much better.
The let down part in the movie would be less-realistic second half. Or the fact that it is not very common which gives us nothing to relate with the final half. Simply, the transformation from realistic first half of the movie to rather less-realistic half is unconvincing.
On the whole, it is definitely an excellent movie simply if you believe in it.Considering the music and the passionate romance, I would highly recommend this movie.

When the 'Kolaveri' song blew up in 2012, that was enough to make me not want to watch this movie. I didn't really like that song when it came out and when the whole movie seemed to be 'the Kolaveri song' movie upon release, that just put me off. And despite hearing good things about it, I was never really motivated to watch it... until now, thanks to its theatrical re-release.
Having watched it, I think it's decent. There are things about the movie I like; which is probably on par with things everyone likes about it; the great acting (surprisingly even from Shruti Haasan, who has always been a horrible actress), the charm, the suspense, and even the score (yes, I don't like Kolaveri, but the score is still iconic). The movie never felt like it was doing more than it should have, well, until... And this brings me to the things I dislike, the final act of the movie. I would blame it on amateur directing, where the movie which had handled itself with enough tact right up to that point, choses to overplay its hand, exhausting its overall appeal. And by the time the credits role, it seems like a cheap mental health PSA.
Nonetheless for all my complaining, it was a decent movie about love and mental health. I'm glad there was a re-release, because I never would have watched it otherwise, but now that I have, I don't think I'll want to watch it ever again. It was a one-time thing, and I'm good with that.

Aishwarya R.Danush, gotta mention her name first coz she deserves it. This movie is a "my sassy girl", "moment to remember" to Indian cinema. If I was a director the cult status of "kolaveri" would have made me to redo the script. nut man! she is a man and a brave woman, the movie (or journey) in remarkable and i warn you this story can be felt only if you travel through it.
Few may wonder what makes the movie so great? As you ppl ritly know our heroes seldom die jus like Hollywood and this is our PS I love you.
By no means I am comparing the stories of the movies I quoted above, its just that I felt the same lump in my throat while watching this movie.
There is something more than bollywood in India and we call ourselves as Tamil, telugu, malayalam, kannada and bengali etc (satyajithray!).
If you have time and heart do see our movies including this. Its my humble request.

Good story and development.
But the overacting on sad scenes esp by Shruti were cringeworthy.
I had to fast forward almost every time she was crying and it greatly lessened the impact of the story.
I get she's an extremely beautiful girl, but bloody hell, she couldn't act despair and pain.

Aishwarya's debut is not only emotional but it also manages to drive home the message she wants to convey with the velocity and ferocity required. The first half is full quiver as the eve of love and it successions are portrayed in a brilliant yet simplistic manner. Dhanush's subtle emotion paired with Shruti Hassan's angelic looks churn into a romantic piece that fissures itself in our hearts. The first half with it's humor and fresh screenplay arrows itself past expectations and penetrates deep to form expectation for a film that had so much hype. So far, so good, the second half doesn't take off with a vengeance, though a sense of intrigue creeps in, there is no development in that section instead the film takes a emotional route with thriller tinting it at every turn. The performances are brilliant, Dhanush is at his usual best with his expressions saying all. Shruti Hassan and the rest of the crew have given their best. Though the film doesn't pace up well, the emotional sequences emanate a sense of relativity that swirls and synchronizes with the story, Dhanush is a tribute to acting and he is the soul and flesh through which the blood of the story flows. Hats off to Aishwarya.

The movie "3" was a perfect showcase of love, emotions, especially hormones, and was scripted with perfection... the film was so dramatic in showcasing the emotions, at times, i had deja vu of different kind !! The movie tried to show the true emotions of the protagonist/antagonist perfectly, while watching I had the same emotional experience as I had with 3 Idiots/ Memento /The Tunnel /Cloverfield.
The film is aptly titled "3", and if the title had been otherwise it would have been an grave injustice to the script & the character(s).
The interleaving of music and act was perfectly done and there was not a single anachronic moment except "Why this Kolaveri Di", which could have been choreographed better.
Overall it was an roller coaster "Hormonic" Ride and its worth a watch...
