On January 1, 2024, the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse – seen in the animated shorts Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho, and most famously Steamboat Willie – became public domain… which, of course, means we’re now going to get multiple horror movies that feature characters inspired by Mickey Mouse. Within the first three days of the year, we saw the short film The Vanishing of S.S. “Screamboat” won’t set sail on its official theatrical voyage until April 2, but the movie’s star skipper is already seeing clear skies.
“I’ve been to two of the screenings so far, and the audience reactions have been fantastic. They’ve really gotten what we’re trying to do,” David Howard Thornton told IndieWire — ahead of the trailer’s exclusive debut. “I like to call it ‘splat-stick’ comedy because it’s just an absurd concept when you think about it. I mean, it’s a mutant mouse going around on a boat killing people.”
Directed by Steven Lamorte and co-written with Matthew Garcia-Dunn, “Screamboat” sees Thornton taking off his typical “Terrifier” make-up to disappear into the role of a serial killer Steamboat Willie. After the success of ‘Terrifier 3,’ David Howard Thornton is taking on the role of The Joker in ‘Jokers Wild,’ a new horror short from Busted Knuckle Productions.
In the film, The Joker has captured Robin, and it’s up to Batman to try to save him before it’s too late. The short stars Thornton as The Joker, with Joel Leblanc as Robin and Hunter G. Williams as Batman. Written and directed by Aaron W. Bennett, the film also features makeup by Tatjana Bluchel, who worked with Thornton on ‘The Mean One.’
David Howard Thornton has portrayed The Joker before in the ‘Nightwing: Escalation’ web series and has expressed a strong love for the character.
He recently shared his desire to play The Joker in a DC Studios film, hoping someone like James Gunn would give him the chance to bring his unique take on the villain to the big screen.

Winnie the Pooh, Pinocchio, Bambi, Peter Pan, and now Mickey Mouse... kinda!
The first teaser for Iconic Events Releasing's upcoming Screamboat movie didn't actually reveal the murderous mouse, but thanks to a new promo image (via Variety), we now have a first look at David Howard Thornton - who plays Art the Clown in the Terrifier films - as a twisted take on the classic cartoon character.
This project is not part of the Twisted Childhood Universe, aka the "Poohniverse," but by the looks of this reprehensible rodent, he'd fit right in.
As we're sure many of you will be aware, Steamboat Willie debuted in a 1928 animated short film directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, which is generally viewed as the first appearance of Mickey and Minnie Mouse. For all intends and purposes, Willie is the iconic Disney mascot, but something tells us this character won't be referred...

A Steamboat Willie slasher flick was always going to have a pretty hefty dose of goofiness (though Goofy himself is not in the public domain until 2028), but this “Screamboat” monster reveal is nuts.
“Screamboat” had already unveiled a teaser trailer (as first shared by IndieWire in August 2024), but the Mickey Mouse precursor character was not depicted in it. That may have been for the best, as “Screamboat” director Steven Lamorte’s monster looks like, well, what you see above.
David Howard Thornton (Art the Clown in the “Terrifier” trilogy) plays Steamboat Willie in the film from DeskPop Entertainment and distributor Iconic Events Releasing. Willie was designed by Quantum Creation FX as both a puppet and a costume — it’s as practical as the boat the film shot on.

Jim Carrey's divisive Christmas movie has become a streaming hit 24 years after its original release. The comedic actor rose to stardom during the 1990s with a series of box office hits, starting with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber (all released in 1994), followed by Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and Batman Forever (both in 1995). These hits made Carrey one of the highest-paid comedic actors, starting with the slightly darker comedy, The Cable Guy, in 1996 and Liar Liar in 1997.
Carrey's success as a leading comedic actor continued well into the 2000s, starting with How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 2000, which became the second highest-grossing Christmas movie of all time, and continued with Bruce Almighty, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Yes Man in the following years. In 2009, Carrey played multiple characters in the 3D animated adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens story, A Christmas Carol,...

The last decade has been ripe with twists on the classic horror film genre. Most recently, this has taken the form of mascot horror, a subgenre that essentially turns what could be childhood delight into a source of terror. Popular mascot horror films from the past few years have included Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, Five Nights at Freddy's, and the upcoming films Bambi: The Reckoning and Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare. While there are still plenty of conventional horror films being made, audiences are seeming to respond well to those that twist a typically jovial topic into something sinister.
In addition to mascot horror, another growingly popular trope is the Christmas horror film. This is exemplified in several recent films, such as Mean One, which combines mascot and holiday horror. 2024 saw the release of Terrifier 3, a threequel which put Art the Clown in a Christmas setting. On January 1st, the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse – seen in the animated shorts Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho, and most famously Steamboat Willie – became public domain… which, of course, means we’re now going to get multiple horror movies that feature characters inspired by Mickey Mouse. Within the first three days of the year, we saw the short film The Vanishing of S.S. Willie, a trailer for the slasher movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap, and an announcement that Terrifier 2 producers Steven Della Salla and Michael Leavy and director Steven Lamorte, who previously made the Grinch-inspired horror movie The Mean One, were teaming up for a Steamboat Willie-inspired horror flick that we now know is titled Screamboat. The film is aiming for a January 2025 release, and a teaser trailer made its way online back in August. (You can watch that in the embed above.) Now, Screamboat is set...

Before ruining Christmas as Art the Clown in Terrifier 3, David Howard Thornton slashed through the snow in The Mean One.
The 2022 horror parody of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas is coming down the chimney in style this Christmas with a SteelBook Blu-ray release on December 17.
Steven Lamorte directs from a script by Flip Kobler (The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride) and Finn Kobler.
Krystle Martin, Chase Mullins, John Bigham, Erik Baker, Flip Kobler, and Amy Schumacher round out the cast.
Special Features include:
Audio commentary by director-producer Steven Lamorte and producer-actress Amy Schumacher Christmas Chaos: Making The Mean One Deleted scenes
In my review, I said, “More like a stocking stuffer than a grand gift, The Mean One would pair well with Jack Frost for a spirited double feature of tongue-in-cheek Christmas horror. The fact that it’s receiving a theatrical release is deserving of commendation and support,...

While Terrifier 3s box office success is notable for numerous reasons, one major surprise is the movies infamously divisive time period. Although Terrifier 2s success in October 2022 was a surprise, Terrifier 3s box office is an even bigger shock. The movies financial impact is almost unprecedented for numerous reasons, from its unrated release to its lack of big-name stars to the shocking amounts of gruesome gore featured in its lengthy runtime. Terrifier 3s brutally violent kills alone could have potentially killed its box office prospects but, instead, the slasher sequel proved a massive success.

With the original iterations of several Disney characters now in the public domain, the door has been opened to parodies featuring twisted new versions of them.
One of the most attention-grabbing parodies is the upcoming horror movie Screamboat which, in case it wasn't obvious, is based on the iconic Mickey Mouse predecessor, Steamboat Willie.
Directed by Steven Lamorte, who previously helmed 2022's The Mean One, a horror based on Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas, the teaser trailer suggests the project will make slasher fans happy.
According to the synopsis, "[Screamboat] follows a group of New Yorkers on a late-night ferry ride that turns deadly when a mischievous mouse begins a rampage, targeting unsuspecting passengers. The unlikely crew must band together to thwart the murderous menace before their relaxing commute turns into a nightmare."
You can watch the newly released trailer below (via FearHQ.com) ahead of the movie's planned 2025 release.

One of horror's more divisive trends continues in the Screamboat teaser trailer. The movie hails from director Steven Lamorte, who previously made a name for himself by directing 2022's The Mean One, a slasher horror twist on Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Screamboat will center on a group of New Yorkers who come under attack by a figure who looks akin to Mickey Mouse aboard a late-night ferry, with the project entering development after Steamboat Willie entered the public domain.
Now, some eight months after the movie was first announced, Iconic Events Releasing has debuted the first Screamboat teaser trailer.

After the success of Ron Howard's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (a hit so big even the 2018 animated remake broke box office records), it was a no-brainer for Hollywood to look to other Dr. Seuss books for inspiration for its next success. DreamWorks quickly set its sights on "The Cat in the Hat" and greenlit a live-action adaptation with a budget over $100 million, tapping another Canadian-born comedic A-lister to star in the film -- in this case, Mike Myers, an actor who was at the peak of his career, starring in both the "Austin Powers" trilogy And "Shrek" at the same time. The 2003 film also starred Spencer Breslin and Dakota Fanning, the former a popular actor with kids at the time thanks to "The Santa Clause 2" and the latter a phenomenal young actor too good for this disappointing project.

Screamboat, a horror comedy twist on Steamboat Willie, will feature a mischievous, murderous mouse villain. Horror filmmakers are capitalizing on the public domain availability of Steamboat Willie for various adaptations. Screamboat retains familiar elements from the original but adds a horror-comedy flair with practical effects.
A horror movie scheduled for a 2025 release is giving the perfect horror spin on a 96-year-old Disney classic that is now part of the public domain. Among the current trends in the horror genre is the adaptation of family-friendly stories and characters, which, unsurprisingly, has been a controversial trend. These adaptations gained force with the viral film Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey in 2023, which has now started a multiverse of horror movies based on children’s stories, but other artists are bringing their takes on these once-innocent characters outside the “Poohniverse”.

Willie, a trailer for the slasher movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap, and an announcement that Terrifier 2 producers Steven Della Salla and Michael Leavy and director Steven Lamorte, who previously made the Grinch-inspired horror movie The Mean One, were teaming up for a Steamboat Willie-inspired horror flick. Now it has been confirmed that the movie is called Screamboat, and Iconic Events Releasing will be giving it a theatrical release sometime in 2025.

The short film that introduced Mickey Mouse to the world, 1928’s Steamboat Willie entered the public domain this year, and a handful of Mickey Mouse-themed horror projects have already been announced. One of those films is titled Screamboat, and Bloody Disgusting has learned that the filmmakers are teaming with Iconic Events Releasing for a theatrical release.
From the production teams behind Terrifier 2 and The Mean One, Screamboat is coming to theaters in 2025 via Iconic Events Releasing, we have been informed this afternoon.
In Screamboat, “A mischievous mouse stalks a group of New Yorkers on a late night ferry ride, unleashing murderous mayhem on a relaxing commute. Can the ship’s motley crew of travelers find a way to stop a killer creature who has developed a taste for tourists?”
“Iconic Events couldn’t be more excited to get in on the ground floor of what is going to be a fun and terror-filled ride,...
