As a young boy brings a gun into a police station events back track to some days earlier when harassed kitchen salesman Ted, struggling with the charcoal for a barbecue, berates Rochelle, one of a group of schoolgirls, for dropping litter outside his house. Soon after a condom is pushed through the letterbox. When it rains Ted and his wife Sally host Ted's boss Kenny and his wife Dawn indoors but a stone is thrown through the window and the two men catch a youth running away. He turns out to be Rochelle's brother and Ted locks him in the garden shed but is persuaded to release him by Sally and Kenny, who fear reprisals and a likely charge of false imprisonment. A frustrated Ted lets rip, only to learn that Kenny was planning to promote him. The boy has dropped his mobile phone and Ted decides to return it to Rochelle at her rough estate. However as Rochelle stands her balcony she hears a shot ring out.

Despite living with her mother,check-out girl Carol,and gangster brother Jake on the rough Langmead Estate, Rochelle is a bright pupil and possible Oxford entrant. However for riling Ted,who reported her to the school,she faces a day's suspension when she should have been going on a choir trip. The estate is mourning Danny Johnson,killed by members of a rival gang of Somalis,but Rochelle is secretly seeing a Somali boy,taxi driver Sami,who drives Kenny and Dawn to Ted's doomed barbecue and lets them ride for free after they object to Rochelle being in the car. On the night that Ted returns the phone to the estate the victim of the gun shot would appear to be Sami.

On the day of Ted's barbecue Carol finds three hundred pounds hidden in a drawer and accuses Jake of keeping drugs money, leading to a row. Rochelle comes to see her at work to tell her of her suspension and things prey on her mind. She is abrupt with Ted and has a row with another customer. She thinks back to the time when she was with her husband and Jake was little. After visiting her mother she joins her workmates at a pub where she does a stand-up comedy routine. On her way home she meets Alfie, the little boy who took the gun to the police station, and he tells her he and Kyle, Carol's other son, found the three hundred pounds. Back at her flat she hears the gun shot and Jake rushes in, asking her to say that he was with her all night, which she does when the police come to see them.

Left alone to look after his younger brother and sisters whilst his mother Sandra holidays in Spain,Alfie spends his thirteenth birthday getting up to mischief with his friends,putting the condom through Ted's door and smashing the window. A repo man calls to collect the TV set from Sandra's flat but is seen off by gang members from the estate and,as his friends give Alfie a party,presenting him with a stolen bike,they see Rochelle drive by with Sami. As an initiation into the Lakemead gang Alfie is charged with luring Sami to his death as a reprisal for the killing of Danny Johnson. Furthermore he is told he must kill him although Jake is against murder and only wants to scare the Somalian. By the time Alfie arrives on the scene holding the gun Sami is lying on the floor and Ted,returning Rochelle's phone,tries to intervene but is accidentally shot by Alfie,who now confesses everything to Hutton. Sami recovers in hospital but Sally is last seen on her own at the house she shared with Ted.
