Adult Swim has announced that Common Side Effects, a new series that follows what happens after a mysterious healing mushroom is discovered, will debut on Sunday, February 2, at 11:30 p.m. Et/Pt.

The half-hour series comes from Joe Bennett (Scavengers Reign) and Steve Hely (Veep). It is executive produced by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels (King of the Hill).

The half-hour series follows Marshall and Frances, two former high school lab partners who share a secret: Marshall has discovered the world’s greatest medicine, a mushroom that can heal almost anything.

But getting it out into the world won’t be easy – the DEA, big pharma, and international businessmen are all on the chase to stop them.

“Joe and Steve have created something incredibly original with a series that is thrilling, beautiful and deeply funny,” said Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen.

“It’s top-level television that challenges expectations and raises profound questions.

Luca Guadagnino, the Italian film-maker, will bring a new interpretation of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel American Psycho to the screen.

According to Deadline, the acclaimed director of Call Me by Your Name and Challengers will work with screenwriter Scott Z Burns to find an updated way into the material. Burns is known for his many collaborations with Steven Soderbergh including Contagion, Side Effects and The Informant.

The upcoming half-hour series is created by Joe Bennet and Steve Hely with Judge and Daniels executive producing. “Common Side Effects” dives into the world’s complicated responses when it’s revealed that the elixir of life does, in fact, exist. The comedy’s gateway into this complex reality are former high school lab partners Marshall and Frances. Together, they stumble upon a conspiracy involving big pharma, the government and a rare mushroom that very well may be the key to curing all the diseases in the world.

Leah Remini, who like her friend Paul Haggis is a former Scientologist who left the church and became one of its most vocal critics, is expected to testify Monday on behalf of the “Crash” director fighting a civil lawsuit accusing him of rape.

Haggis’ lawyer Priya Chaudhry argued Friday that the defense should be allowed to call Remini as an 11th-hour witness to testify about “her personal experience with the various tactics used [by Scientology] to destroy her.”

Before the trial began, Haggis’ team won the right to argue that the church was somehow behind the suit brought by former events publicist Haleigh Breest, though they have yet to produce any evidence or testimony making that connection directly.

The civil rape trial of Paul Haggis, the Oscar-winning filmmaker best known for his work on “Million Dollar Baby” and “Crash,” continued on Friday in a lower Manhattan courtroom.

Former publicist Haleigh Breest, who filed a lawsuit against Haggis in 2017, was cross-examined by defense attorney Priya Chaudhry for most of the day. Breest alleges that the filmmaker forced her to perform oral sex and then raped her in his Soho apartment.

After a limited number of interactions at industry events, Breest encountered Haggis at an after-party on Jan. 31, 2013, before heading back to his home. The event was hosted by the Cinema Society, where Breest worked as a freelance film publicist for eight years. She was let go after her lawsuit against Haggis was filed in 2017.

“It was devastating because I had done that since the end of college. My friends worked the evenings. There was a whole community,” she said.

According to the Associated Press, Breest testified today that Haggis tried to kiss her, backed her up against a refrigerator and asked, “Are you scared of me?”

She then went on give details of the alleged assault. The AP reports that Breest testified about a painful and terrifying attack that left her “really struggling to comprehend what had happened.”

“I couldn’t understand how somebody who seemed like a nice guy would do that,” she added on the stand.

The sexual assault civil trial of Oscar-winning Crash writer-producer Paul Haggis began today in Manhattan. Opening arguments from both sides cited a text exchange by the accuser.

The prosecution pointed to a passage from film publicist Haleigh Breest that read, according to the Associated Press, “[Haggis] was so rough and aggressive,” while the defense pointed out that the accuser also wrote, “I don’t care too much.”

The case centers on allegations by Breest, who claimed in 2017 that Haggis assaulted her in 2013 after the two attended the premiere of the film Side Effects. After myriad efforts by Haggis to have the matter thrown out of court, a New York judge ruled in mid-2018 that the case could proceed. But the Covid pandemic saw the matter put on hold until this week.

Breest is seeking unspecified damages.

HBO Max has released a gripping trailer for “Kimi,” a tech-age thriller that will debut exclusively on the platform Feb. 10.

From director Steven Soderbergh (“No Sudden Move”) and a script by David Koepp (“Jurassic Park”), “Kimi” depicts a world where Kimi, the name of a fictitious Alexa or Siri-like digital assistant, is listening and recording every moment of people’s lives. The film, which hails from New Line Cinema and HBO Max, follows an agoraphobic voice stream interpreter, Angela Childs (Zoë Kravitz), who believes to overhear a murder on a recording she analyzes. But when Childs tries to bring the recording to her employers’ attention, her concerns are pushed aside.

Amazon Prime Video has appointed seasoned Mexican film and TV producer Leonardo Zimbron for the newly created position of head of film for Spanish-speaking Latin America, effective January.

Zimbron was most recently with Endemol Shine Boomdog where he led its scripted unit since 2018. He has moved to Miami where he will report to Javiera Balmaceda, head of local originals for Spanish-speaking Latin America at Amazon Studios.

With this new role, Zimbron fulfills his long-time ambition to expand his purview from Mexico to the rest of the region. It is unclear who will oversee Portuguese-speaking Brazil.

Zimbron’s film credits include some of the biggest box office hits in Mexico, taking in 2013 comedy “We are the Nobles” (“Nosotros los Nobles”) Gary Alazraki’s debut feature, which has been or will be remade in various territories, including the U.S.

Aside from founding his own production company, Traziende Films, Zimbron ran Warner Bros.

“Kimi,” the latest twisty thriller from director Steven Soderbergh, will debut exclusively on HBO Max Feb. 10.

Soderbergh is no stranger to the streamer. His most recent film “No Sudden Move,” which starred Don Cheadle, Benicio del Toro, David Harbour, Jon Hamm and Brendan Fraser, hit HBO Max in July. Soderbergh’s “Let Them All Talk,” a 2020 American comedy-drama set on a cruise ship with Meryl Streep, Dianne Wiest and Candice Bergen, also streamed exclusively on HBO Max.

Catherine Zeta-Jones has been announced as the latest addition to the hit Fox drama.

The Oscar winner will show up in the latter half of the season in the series regular role of Dr. Vivian Capshaw, Claremont Psychiatrics’ resident MD.

Sheen’s Dr. Martin Whitly is assigned to infirmary duty, and Dr. Capshaw is happy to task “The Surgeon” to clean bedpans and mop the floor.

Accompanying Meryl Streep, Candice Bergen, Dianne Wiest and the rest of Soderbergh’s cast crossing the Atlantic on the Queen Mary 2 is a jazz score that might easily have been penned by John Barry (“The Knack”), Neal Hefti (“The Odd Couple”) or Henry Mancini (“The Pink Panther”).

“Steven genuinely loves that kind of music,” Newman tells Variety. “It was fun to be doing something so different, so outspoken. I’m usually more into the sensuality of how music hits image and can shape and structure things. This was a lot of jazz waltzes.”

Apple has given a series order to “Extrapolations,” an anthology series about climate change from Scott Z. Burns, Variety has learned exclusively.

Burns will write, direct, and executive produce the series, which hails from Media Res. It is said to tell intimate, unanticipated stories of how the upcoming changes to our planet will affect love, faith, work and family on a personal and human scale. Told over a season of 10 interconnected episodes, each story in the scripted series will track the worldwide battle for our mutual survival spanning the 21st century.

Funding is in place from New York-based private equity firm Raven Capital Management. Open Road Films will be led by Raven principal James Masciello with key support from Matt Sidari. Filmmaker Woody Allen has penned a memoir, titled “Apropos of Nothing,” that will hit shelves on April 7, its printing house Grand Central Publishing announced on Monday. According to Deadline, the book will contain “a comprehensive account of his life, both personal and professional, and describes his work in films, theater, television, nightclubs, and print. Allen also writes of his relationships with family, friends, and the loves of his life.” The book will come out in hardcover print, e-book, and audio editions.
