National Geographic’s “Sugarcane” leads the ninth annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards nominations with eight nominations, including best documentary feature. The film’s other nominations are Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie for director and new documentary filmmakers, Christopher Lamarca and Emily Kassie for cinematography, Nathan Punwar and Maya Daisy Hawk for editing, historical documentary, political documentary, and true crime documentary.

Also nominated alongside Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie’s critically acclaimed film is “Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story,” “Daughters,” “The Greatest Night in Pop,” “Jim Henson Idea Man,” “Music by John Williams,” “Piece by Piece,” “The Remarkable Life of Ibelin,” “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story” and “Will & Harper.”

The Critics Choice Association honors the year’s finest achievements in documentaries released in theaters, on TV, and major digital platforms, as determined by the voting of qualified Cca members. The ninth annual awards ceremony is produced...

“Dune: Part Two,” “Inside Out 2” and “The Creator” lead the feature nominations for this year’s Hollywood Professional Association (Hpa) Awards with three apiece. The awards will be presented during a Nov. 7 gala at the Television Academy in North Hollywood.

“Dune: Part Two” was nominated in the categories for color grading, editing and sound; “The Creator,” for color grading, sound and visual effects; and “Inside Out 2” for color grading in an animation feature, sound, and VFX in an animated feature. The eligibility period runs from September to September.

As previously announced, during the ceremony FotoKem will receive the Charles S. Swartz Award for industry contributions. Adobe, Disguise, Cuebric and Evercast will be honored for engineering excellence.

In 2018, “La La Land” and “Dear Evan Hansen” songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul missed out on breaking the record for fastest Egot acquisition by coming up short on their first Emmy bid for “A Christmas Story Live!”. From that point, however, they still had eight years left to achieve said record, and they could end up doing so with two years to spare now that they are in the running for the 2024 Best Music and Lyrics Emmy.

Pasek and Paul’s new nominated song from “Only Murders in the Building” is one of three comedic ones in its lineup, the others of which were written for “Girls5eva” and “Saturday Night Live.” Also in the mix are more somber tunes from the miniseries “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” and “True Detective: Night Country.”

Three years after “Boys State” won the Emmy for Best Documentary Special, its first companion film, “Girls State,” is competing for the same honor. While it has solid potential to directly follow “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” as the third Apple TV+ special to take this prize, it will have to stand out from a crowd of strong contenders, including the same platform’s “Steve! (Martin): A Documentary in 2 Pieces.”

Unlike most Primetime Emmys, Best Documentary Special is a non-competitive area award that is bestowed upon any nominee that earns the approval of 90% of the members of the TV academy’s documentary peer group. This means that the five programs in the 2024 lineup are not vying for a single trophy and could all potentially prevail. However, if no nominees hit said 90% threshold, only the highest-rated one will win.

On Sunday, August 11, HBO and Max celebrated their 2024 Emmys nominations with a star-studded, day-long gala of panels, mingling and fun photo ops. TV academy members in attendance were treated to breakfast in the morning, lunch in the afternoon featuring music from director Jamila Wignot‘s “Stax: Soulsville U.S.A.,” and a dinner reception in the evening with specialty cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres. The FYC event took place at Nya Studios East in Hollywood.

This year, “True Detective: Night Country” leads all HBO and Max programming with a whopping 19 Emmy nominations, including for Best Limited Series and stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. “Hacks” is close behind with 16 bids, including for Best Comedy Series and actresses Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. Forty years ago, Rob Reiner made his feature directorial debut with “This Is Spinal Tap,” the mockumentary that launched his career and ultimately became a comedy classic. (Reiner is currently in post-production on a long awaited sequel.) At around that same time, Reiner began thinking about making a riff on “My Dinner With Andre,” starring him and his lifelong friend Albert Brooks.

“I saw that movie and immediately thought, wow, I could sit with Albert at a deli, and it could be ‘My Dinner With Albert,'” Reiner told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “I said to Albert, ‘Let’s do it — we’ll sit in Jerry’s Deli or Art’s Deli and shoot for three or four days, and if you don’t like it, we throw it away.’ He never wanted to do it.”

After being in the business for almost 60 years, it appears Rob Reiner shows no sign of slowing down. Last year saw him debut his first ever documentary (at least his first real documentary), “Albert Brooks: Defending My Life,” and he’s currently finishing up production in New Orleans on a “This Is Spinal Tap” sequel. In a recent interview with Deadline, Reiner discussed his shock over the documentary’s Emmy nominations, as well as the status of the follow-up to his feature directorial debut and cult classic.

“It’s a total surprise,” Reiner said of receiving Emmy nominations for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, as well as his direction of the film. “Especially because I’ve never made a real documentary. The only one I made was a fake one — ‘Spinal Tap.’ It’s so funny to get recognized in this way.”

One of Rob Reiner’s greatest filmmaking credits is the classic mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap. Some of the entertainment industry’s top filmmakers will go up against each other at the 76th Emmy Awards.

Oscar winner Ron Howard’s Jim Henson Idea Man earned eight Emmy nominations this morning, more than any other nonfiction contender in the race. The Disney+ film about the Muppets creator is nominated for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, and Howard scored a nomination for directing the film. Howard is far from the only prominent name to earn recognition in the documentary categories. Rob Reiner earned a nomination for directing Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, and his HBO documentary will go up against Jim Henson Idea Man in the Nonfiction Special category. The Primetime Emmy Awards are still three months out, but campaign season is in full gear. The nomination round of voting began this week and runs through Monday, June 24. As is often the case, Warner Bros. Discovery has dozens of titles up for consideration between the premium prestige programs of HBO and the buzzy streaming-exclusive shows on Max. To help remind voters of the series that they loved over the past year, Max is launching For Your Consideration (FYC) panels featuring the cast, producers, and crews of titles to make the case for their nominations. Best Picture favorite “Oppenheimer” and “The Holdovers” were the drama and comedy editing winners at the 74th Ace Eddie Awards, March 3 at UCLA’s Royce Hall. “Oppenheimer” editor Jennifer Lame is now a step closer to winning the Oscar for deftly balancing Christopher Nolan’s interlocking, subjective POVs of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy) in color and adversary Admiral Lewis Strauss (Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey Jr.) in black-and-white.

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” topped the dramatic feature editing category at the American Cinema Editors’ 74th Ace Eddie Awards, while “The Holdovers” won the category for best edited comedic feature during Sunday’s ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall.

Jennifer Lame edited “Oppenheimer,” which also took top honors at last week’s SAG Awards and Producers Guild Awards. The recent honor further cements the film’s position to take top prize at the Oscars next weekend. But she faces competition from Kevin Tent, who won here for “The Holdovers.”

Should Lame go on to win the Oscar, it will mark nine years since a woman has won. Margaret Sixel won in 2015 for “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

Universal’s Oppenheimer won the top prize at Sunday’s (February 25) 35th Annual Producers Guild Awards at The Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood.

The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures follows Saturday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards triumph in the cast category and cements Christopher Nolan’s global blockbuster as the one to beat at the Academy Awards come March 10.

As announced today, January 25, the 74th Annual Ace Eddie Awards will recognize Thelma Schoonmaker’s work on “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Jennifer Lame’s editing skills on “Oppenheimer,” Nick Houy’s vision for “Barbie,” Laurent Sénéchal for “Anatomy of a Fall,” and more nominees across drama and comedy.

The annual awards ceremony honors outstanding editing in 14 categories of film, television, and documentaries. The winners will be announced live during the Ace Eddie Awards on Sunday, March 3, 2024 at UCLA’s Royce Hall at a special brunch celebration, with “Hairspray” actress, drag queen, and queer activist Nina West hosting.

TV nominees include “The Bear,” “Succession,” “Barry,” “Ahsoka,” “The Last of Us,” and “Beef.”

Nominations for the 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards have been announced with the surprise of two international titles — Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” — the first time two international titles have been nominated by the guild.

The lineup includes many of the Oscars’ usual suspects as voting for nominations is underway. Rounding out the noms are “American Fiction,” “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Past Lives” and “Poor Things.”

After being shut out of the SAG nominations, indie distributor A24 is the only studio to land two films in the top category with “Past Lives” and “The Zone of Interest.”

About 'Albert Brooks: Defending My Life'

Brooks’ long and impressive career kicked off in the 1960s. Since then, he’s been delivering hilarious jokes and entertaining skits.

Albert Brooks and Rob Reiner, now both 76, have been best friends since high school, having met in the drama club at Beverly Hills High. (Richard Dreyfuss was also in their class.) Both were what might now be referred to as “nepo babies” in that both of their fathers had successful careers in comedy — Rob as son of the legendary Carl Reiner, creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show, and Albert the son of Harry Einstein (yes — his real name is Albert Einstein), a radio comedian who found fame as a character called Parkyakarkus. Harry might have gone on to greater heights had he not suffered a fatal heart attack moments after his routine at a roast of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in 1958. Eleven-year-old Albert was listening live on the radio that night.

When I heard Rob Reiner was planning to direct a documentary on a true comic icon and genius named Albert Brooks, I thought “Now this will be good!” Reiner is not only a smart and talented filmmaker in his own right, but also a longtime friend of Brooks, with whom he went to high school and even co-starred with him in drama department productions. I am happy to report this HBO Original documentary, Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, premiering Saturday night and then streaming on Max, not only more than met my high expectations but exceeded them.

Closer than ever to coronation, Netflix has released the trailer for Part 1 of the sixth and final season of its hit period drama “The Crown.”

The final season of the series will span 1997-2005 with the four-episode Part One depicting the relationship between Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki) and Dodi Fayed (Khalid Abdalla) and the 1997 car crash in Paris that killed them.

In months leading up to her billion-dollar Mattel success “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig famously revealed some of the film influences behind her work. Now, the practice is set to continue in her role as guest artistic director for the 2023 AFI Fest, which takes place in Los Angeles Oct. 25–29.

The Oscar-nominated writer-director revealed Tuesday the five films that are going to be part of her specially curated festival sidebar: Tim Burton’s “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” Bob Fosse’s “All That Jazz,” Emeric Pressburger and Michael Powell’s “A Matter of Life and Death,” Vincente Minnelli’s “An American in Paris” and Wim Wenders’ “Wings of Desire.”

Gerwig will introduce select films herself, notably “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” which screens at the Tcl Chinese Theatre on Oct. 26 at 6 p.m., two months after the death of its star and cowriter Paul Reubens.

On the heels of a staggeringly triumphant run with Barbie, the fantastical comedy which she co-wrote and directed for Warner Bros, Greta Gerwig has been appointed by the American Film Institute to serve as Guest Artistic Director of AFI Fest 2023.

An Oscar-nominated filmmaker known equally for her work as an actress, Gerwig joins a lineage of Guest Aristic Directors that also includes such titans as Pedro Almodóvar, Bernardo Bertolucci, Ava DuVernay, David Lynch and Agnès Varda. The 37th edition of the festival is set to take place October 25-29 in Los Angeles. Ticket bundles have already been made available for purchase, along with the full festival lineup, with individual tickets to go on sale tomorrow.

One half of the cultural phenomenon known as Barbenheimer, opposite Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Gerwig’s live-action Barbie has proven immensely popular with critics and moviegoers alike, setting numerous records while grossing over $1.4B worldwide.

The American Film Institute (AFI) has announced the full lineup for their 2023 festival, which will run in person from Oct. 25 to Oct. 29. The American Film Institute’s 2023 AFI Fest has officially unveiled its lineup, marking the respective world premieres of Rob Reiner’s “Albert Brooks: Defending My Life” documentary and Matthew Brown’s “Freud’s Last Session,” starring Anthony Hopkins as the titular psychiatrist.

This year’s AFI Fest takes place October 25 through 29, with Sam Esmail’s “Leave the World Behind” dystopian drama opening the festival. Tyler Perry documentary “Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story” will debut as a centerpiece screening; Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein film “Maestro” is slated to close out the festival.

The full AFI lineup boasts 141 total titles, including 18 Best International Feature Oscar submissions.
