According to Sawyer Barth in an interview, who played Flake, the guns used in the movie were real instead of props, just unloaded for filming.
When Flake hints at shooting up the school with Edwin, Edwin asks him if he wants to be like "those kids at that school in Colorado", referencing the Columbine High School Massacre of 1999.
