Alonso must flee Galicia after killing one of Count Raña's sons. On the recommendation of his mother, the boy decides to take refuge in the monastery with Father Xoán, since Raña will soon take justice for the death of the most noble of his offspring. While Alonso is forced to leave his family to save his life, young Ana is happy dreaming of a prince and reading one of her books. However, the greatest adventure of her life is closer than she thinks. Ana has been claimed by Doña Mencía because her husband, the Adelantado Juan of Sanabria, is recruiting young maidens to marry them to settlers in the New World. Alonso also intends to enroll in that trip thanks to the recommendation of Father Xoán. In his escape to Seville to embark on the expedition of Juan of Sanabria, Alonso will meet Pelayo, a rogue boy who, without wanting to, will endanger the life of Alonso and his own. From then on, their destinies will be united forever. For his part, Sanabria, who is not in good health, his wife Mencía, his daughters and the maids are on their way to Seville. Already in the Andalusian capital, Captain Salazar meets with Mencía and the Adelantado to give an account of the preparations for the expedition. Salazar is starting to get impatient because they are late in the trip and have not seen Sanabria for days. At that precise moment the Captain discovers the unfortunate state of health of the Adelantado, who is about to die. The lives of all converge dramatically at the time of departure of the expedition.

The first nights aboard on the Nao San Miguel are not how the maidens waited. The vagaries of the ship wreak havoc among young girls, but Ana represses her discomfort to help her traveling companions. The expedition arrives in Gran Canaria, where a detachment of soldiers and the rest of the expeditionaries await them. There, Mencía meets her friend Isabel of Cabrera and her daughter, Elvira, who will also join the adventure. A storm is planned on the Nao San Miguel, the ships of Ovando and Becerra are more advanced and Mencía does not want to lose sight of them. However, Salazar believes that it is better to fold until the time improves. Once again, the captain and Mencía are facing each other again. Pelayo, who was a stowaway, almost drowned, and is discovered to be saved by Alonso. After the storm must repair the damage. They have run out of rudder and are drifting, the animals have drowned and they do not know if they will have enough water and food to survive before reaching the coast. In addition, they have lost track of the other two Naos. At the end of May of 1550, the expeditionaries reached the coast of the Gulf of Guinea after more than a month of sailing adrift. Once there, things will get even more complicated: the Indians attack them and they find themselves attacked by the pirates. Salazar will not hesitate to give his life, if necessary, for the honor of the maidens but Mencía makes him reconsider so that they negotiate instead of dying in vain. However, pirates have a very different knowledge than Mencía from the word pact. The decision of the Adelantada in these difficult moments can save the lives of all.

Mencia wins the pulse that holds against the pirate Bonpere and he agrees not to touch her ladies. Of course, they will not get rid of the looting. However, the pirates turn a deaf ear to their captain and after several jugs of wine they try to abuse Maria. Mencía prefers to die to dishonor her daughter and is determined that both ships fly through the air if necessary. Salazar is proud along with the crew of Mencía's courage and ingenuity. However, now they will have to face a colossal obstacle: to cross the ocean without navigational instruments, since the pirates destroyed everything. For several months, they remain on the African coast repairing the ship. While the sailors perform the reconstruction tasks, the maidens are entertained as they can. After correcting the damage, the expedition starts up again. Two months after leaving, they continue without sighting land. The lack of fresh food and, therefore, of vitamins makes a dent in the crew and many fall ill due to scurvy. The deceased are increasing and no longer have sacks to shroud the bodies. The sadness makes Mencía reconsider, who finds comfort in the Captain. A few days later, they arrive on land. Happiness invades everyone except Mencía.

The San Miguel has just arrived at Santa Catalina, where they meet again with Becerra and all his crew. Unfortunately, there is no news of Diego Sanabria. Trejo has declared his love to Maria before disembarking. However, Mencía is not for the work of marriage, since the plans for her daughter are to marry Captain Salazar, not Trejo. Finally, Maria achieves her purpose and Fray Carrillo officiates an impromptu ceremony to bless their marriage. Alonso and Pelayo meet some aborigines who are not very happy about their presence and even less who try to steal their food. Salazar asks Alonso not to say anything about the attack of the Tupi to avoid endangering the expedition. The boy keeps his word, so when Ana tells him that she is going to enter the jungle, he does not hesitate to accompany her. The confrontation with the natives will lead to a new low. Everyone is anxious to leave San Francisco as soon as possible. The first turn arrives safe and sound but in the second one, almost fifty sailors die and the San Miguel sinks without being able to avoid it. It's been five months and they're still in San Francisco. The confrontation between Mencía and the Captain has turned into a fraternal collaboration and from there to the passionate love that none can avoid. However, the weight of the conventions and convictions of Mencía prevent her from completing their relationship.
