This is a live action version of an anime series by the same title. Total of 12 episodes were made, and aired on Saturdays at midnight.
Jigoku Shojo or Hell Girl is an urban legend. A website that only a person who has strong grudge against others can access comes on line at midnight. When you type in the name of the person you have grudge against, Hell Girl Enma Ai (Sayuri Iwata) shows up before you. A straw doll with red string wrapped around it is given to the person who've requested the revenge. If the person pulls the string, contract is formed between Enma Ai and the client, and the target gets sent to hell in the most horrific manner. But the revenge has its price. A mark appears on the client's chest, and the client forfeits the right to go to heaven after their own death.
The concept is loosely based on another long running TV series called "Hissatsu !" series where assassins for hire dispenses revenge for the weak. In this series, assassins are replaced by a team of supernatural beings from hell. Some of the episodes are the same as the anime version, while others are original for this series.
For a late night program, this was a very high quality production with many semi A list actors playing the supporting role. Sayuri Iwata puts in a great performance as the leading role.
Little known but a great TV series that's worth a watch if you can find it.
