- In 1962, con man Chester MacFarland (Viggo Mortensen) and his wife Colette (Kirsten Dunst) tour Greece and visit the Acropolis of Athens. There they meet Rydal (Oscar Isaac), who scams tourists on currency exchange rates, while working as a tour guide. Rydal was having lunch and staring at the table where Chester and Colette were sitting. Rydal thought that Chester looked like his father. Collete was curious and follows Rydal when he goes to the toilet and chats him up. Over the next few days Chester meets Rydal multiple times and they get acquainted with each other. Rydal is American, went to Yale and had a major in economics. Chester says that he is an investment manager. The MacFarlands invite Rydal to dinner, and Rydal, intrigued by the couple's wealth and Colette's beauty, accepts their invitation, mentioning that he might bring his girlfriend Lauren (Daisy Bevan).
Colette likes Rydal, but Chester doesn't trust him. After dinner, they part, but Rydal goes back to their hotel to return a bracelet Colette left in their shared taxi. Meanwhile a private detective Paul Vittorio (David Warshofsky) hired by victims of Chester's investment swindles goes to the MacFarlands' hotel room and demands that Chester repay their money. The detective pulls a gun, and Chester kills him in a brief struggle. While he is trying to stow the body in the detective's hotel room, Rydal finds him in the corridor. Chester asks Rydal for his help, pretending that he found the detective drunk and unconscious at the bar. But Rydal finds photos in Paul's room that indicate that Paul had been following Chester and Collete for a while now. Chester admits that Paul was sent to collect money from him. Chester says that he is an investment manager, and the money was lost when the market turned. But now, his clients are wanting their money back and had sent Paul to collect. Rydal agrees to help Chester to escape from the hotel without checking out else Paul would be alarmed. Rydal first takes them to his own home as they try to figure out what to do next. Escaping the country is the only option.
Rydal takes the MacFarlands to see a friend Niko (Omiros Poulakis) who can furnish false passports to replace those they left at their hotel's front desk. He suggests waiting for the counterfeit documents on Crete, as they will take 5 days to arrive. Chester pays $1000 for the passports and another $1500 for them to be delivered to Crete in an expedited manner. Chester believes that Rydal made his own commission on the deal and believes that he has a thing for Collete. There they cannot check into a hotel without identification papers. They spend the evening at a restaurant where Chester gets drunk watching Rydal and Colette dance and grow close. They all sleep the night on the quayside. They travel by bus to Chania (a small town where they are able to secure hotel rooms without passports). On the way, Rydal buys newspapers at a rest stop and finds that the news of Paul's death is all over the news. Rydal realizes that Chester killed Paul and wants Chester to surrender. Chester says that now Rydal is an accomplice. Chester says that Collete doesn't know Paul is dead and wants to keep it this way. In Chania, Colette visits Rydal's room while her husband sleeps. Whether Colette and Rydal have sex is unclear. When Chester wakes up, he finds Collete missing and even Rydal is not in his room. Chester sees evidence of Collete being in Rydal's room and believes that she slept on his bed. Chester is livid and runs around town and finds the duo at a local market. Chester confronts Collete and tells her that he killed Paul. That night Collete again goes to Rydal's room, but this time Chester was awake. He overhears Collete saying that she cannot live with a murderer. On the way back to Iraklion, Colette believes someone has recognized her from newspaper pictures of the Americans who fled the hotel in Athens. She runs off the bus at a stop. Chester and Rydal follow and together they walk to the ruins of Knossos.
When it begins to rain and they seek shelter, Chester lures Rydal into an underground labyrinth and knocks him out. Colette asks what happened to Rydal. As he tries to pull her up the stairs, Colette loses her balance and falls to her death. When Rydal comes to in the morning, he is seen leaving by a group of students and their guide. Chester has rushed to Iraklion to pick up the passports, paying Rydal's friend $2,500. Rydal arrives in Knossos and tracks Chester down. The two realize they are bound together by the various roles in the detective's death, acquiring false passports, and Colette's death. If either is arrested, he will implicate the other.
After taking the ship to Athens, they go to the airport, where Chester pretends to buy them both tickets to Frankfurt. He says he is going for a drink and boards a plane to Istanbul, leaving Rydal with a suitcase containing documents that will tie him to Colette. Rydal realizes that Chester has probably reported him to the police anonymously and he flees the airport and appears to have escaped the police.
Rydal, knowing the false name on Chester's new passport, locates him in Istanbul. He calls Chester and demands a meeting in the Grand Bazaar where he expects to be paid a large bribe for his silence. In fact, Rydal has been taken into police custody.
The authorities have made him wear a wire and expect him to extract a confession from Chester. At their rendezvous Rydal's insistent questioning makes Chester suspicious. Sensing a trap, he flees and a chase through the dark ensues, with both Chester and Rydal fleeing the police. A policeman shoots Chester who, as he lies dying, speaks into the wire Rydal is wearing, admitting responsibility for the two deaths and exonerating Rydal. Rydal is released, and visits Chester's grave.
