Our favorite Harry Potter actor, Daniel Radcliffe, happens to be a major geek, but not in a way to compete with his Victor Frankenstein (2015) co-star James McAvoy. Awaiting his panel for the horror thriller, the duo appeared in an MTV After Hours from Josh Horowitz, to answer pop culture trivia, wherein McAvoy beat Radcliffe’s a*s at his own game.

Appearing in Josh Horowitz’s team, Daniel Radcliffe was asked to compete with James McAvoy and his four Horsemen of Apocalypse (what a reference to his 2016 Marvel flick X-Men: Apocalypse). During the segment, although Radcliffe was expected to know the most basic questions about Harry Potter, the actor surprisingly lost to McAvoy. It now seems quite obvious why Radcliffe was initially intimidated by the X-Men star while filming their movie.

James McAvoy’s new horror thriller Speak No Evil is receiving respectable reviews from critics. The film marked the third collaboration between McAvoy and Blumhouse Productions, who produced his previous films Split and Glass. The film is a remake of the critically acclaimed 2022 Danish movie of the same name.

In the original film, Bjørn and Louise, a Danish couple, visit Patrick and Karin, a Dutch family, they met on a holiday. The hosts begin to slowly make things difficult for the guests who try to remain polite. Besides McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Aisling Franciosi, Alix West Lefler, and Scoot McNairy star in the remake.

With the third installment of their Danza Macabra series, the fine, twisted folks at Severin Films shift focus from the boot of Italy to the Iberian peninsula. This collection spotlights four fascinating Spanish examples of the sort of moody gothic filmmaking that Italian directors like Mario Bava and Antonio Margheriti, not to mention Hammer Films in Britain, helped to popularize for international markets.
Rife with reptilian monsters, vampires, zombified Knights Templar, and even a cameo from Frankenstein and his misbegotten creation, these films vary considerably in tone and approach, ranging from rambling shaggy-dog tales to almost esoteric fables. They also differ in how far they’re willing to go with their respective lashings of sex and violence, growing bolder as the restrictions of the Franco regime lifted after the dictator’s passing in 1975.
Writer-director Miguel Madrid’s schizoid Necrophagous, from 1971, divides its time between two principal storylines that barely cohere in the end.

This article contains spoilers for "Fire & Blood" and this week's episode of "House of the Dragon."
Given the many surprises in the latest "House of the Dragon" episode, it's easy to overlook the sudden arrival of Alicent's brother, Ser Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox). He shows up to accompany Ser Criston Cole on his way to Harrenhaal, even though Cole clearly doesn't want him there. Luckily, Gwayne's arrogant, summer child ways are quickly snuffed out of him by the threat of a dragon attack up above, which Cole averts by having them ride into a nearby forest. Gwayne tells Cole he's in his debt, implying a more friendly relationship between the two in the episodes to come.
It might seem weird for this barely-mentioned-before brother of Alicent to so suddenly get all this screentime, but in light of all the complicated family trees on "House of the Dragon," we should probably...

Documentary fans have a lot to be excited about this month on HBO and Max. April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. The documentary Brandy Hellville and the Cult of Fast Fashion takes a deep-dive into the controversial “one size fits most” clothing brand Brandy Mellville and the impact of fast fashion on the planet.
An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.
But if documentaries aren’t your thing, there’s still plenty of popular films hitting Max in April, like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,...

Anime and manga live-action adaptations, especially English-language ones, have a mixed track record. For every "One Piece" and "Speed Racer," which manage to capture the endless imagination of the medium, there are thrice as many "Dragonball Evolution" and "Ghost in the Shell" bad movies that nearly ruin their source material.
One of the best ones is not really based on an anime or manga — though it is quite clear that "Akira" was a huge influence — Josh Trank and Max Landis' "Chronicle." The film is set in Seattle and follows three teens who acquire telekinetic powers. Soon enough, the fun and games turn dark and deadly when one of them begins to lose control and relish in their power. Aside from very direct visual references to Katsuhiro Otomo's iconic (and very influential) anime masterpiece, "Chronicle" manages to capture the quick and chaotic descent into madness and horror that plagues the...

When “Harry Potter” actor Daniel Radcliffe made his stage debut in 2007, he shocked Hollywood. At 17 years old, Radcliffe was cast as the lead in “Equus,” a Peter Shaffer play in which he would simulate sex with a horse.
Sixteen years later, a similar announcement would barely turn heads.
Now 33, Radcliffe has spent more time working as a professional actor outside of the franchise that skyrocketed him to fame than in it — and creating a singular body of work that exemplifies his artistic sensibilities and talent. Just four years after “Equus” and in the same summer as the final “Potter” premiere, he took a crash course in singing and dancing to lead the Broadway revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” (cast recording). This was followed by tackling horror in “The Woman in Black,” playing Allen Ginsberg in “Kill Your Darlings,” and running head-first into the dark fantasy “Horns.

At a time in Hollywood’s history when reprising career-defining roles is all the rage, Harry Potter franchise star Daniel Radcliffe says he has no interest in returning to the Wizarding World for Max‘s forthcoming Harry Potter TV series. The series is said to be a 10-year endeavor featuring an all-new cast for an in-depth exploration of the fantasy novel series created by J.K. Rowling. Sources close to the project say it could be years before the show premieres, with a 2025/2026 window being likely.
Despite being proud of his years as Harry Potter, Radcliffe has worked very hard to separate himself from the role in the years since the conclusion of the original film series. After playing the “Boy That Lived,” Radcliffe redefined his Hollywood status with unique roles in films like Guns Akimbo, Swiss Army Man, The Woman in Black, Victor Frankenstein, and The Lost City. In the years since Daniel Radcliffe first threw on those famous glasses and saved the world as the boy wizard in the "Harry Potter" franchise, the talented actor has since completely reimagined his image multiple times over. He's been the hunchback Igor in "Victor Frankenstein," a farting corpse relearning the ways of the world in the Daniels' brilliant feature debut "Swiss Army Man," a totally unassuming guy who gets guns nailed to his hands in "Guns Akimbo," and most recently a delightfully mustache-twirling villain in "The Lost City." Now, however, Radcliffe is in for his weirdest role yet -- by far.

The non-profit organization, headquartered in Stockholm, will work with film libraries, archives, rights holders, academics, film festivals and other institutions. It is modelled on Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation and the American Genre Film Archive (Agfa) in the U.S.
Among the first projects of the Egff will be an academic study of historic female genre film makers in Europe and raising funds for a 4K film scanner set-up dedicated to digitizing and restoring genre films and related material that is languishing in archives. In a relatively quiet week on the Billboard 200 albums chart, a number-one album from almost a year ago returned to the top spot. For the tracking week that ended April 21, Tyler the Creator‘s “Call Me If You Get Lost” skyrocketed all the way from number-120 to return to its perch, thanks primarily to the album’s release on vinyl through Tyler’s web store. This year’s Best Rap Album race at the Grammys has been quite chaotic, to say the least. Megan Thee Stallion’s “Good News,” which was widely predicted as one of the front-runners, ended up missing altogether. Drake, who initially got a nomination for his smash album “Certified Lover Boy,” decided to withdraw his nomination just as voting for the winners started. So despite constant controversy and some harsh critical reception, Kanye West positioned himself as the favorite with “Donda” since it also got an Album of the Year nomination. To many, the race is completely locked for West … but what if it’s not?

Spider-Man: No Way Home has already conquered the box office and the hearts of fans across the globe, but now it’s time for it to take over memes, starting with a tentacle-less Doc Ock.
“Doc Ock is one of the more menacing villains in Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery. Not only is he someone that will willingly threaten the life of Aunt May to get to Peter Parker, but he was also first a friend. A mentor turned mind-controlled man with robotic arms, Otto Octavius became the second mad scientist to destroy Peter Parker’s life in the Sam Raimi movies. Played by Alfred Molina, he brought destruction to Peter’s life in the best of ways as a villain, and we loved seeing what Molina brought to the character.”

Jeff Goldblum is standing in a hall of masks in San Dimas, California when he’s taken back. How could he not be? Everywhere he looks, on each shelf and behind every sales rack, there is another row of ghoulish faces staring back at him. Some have rubber fangs, others a latex eyeball, and then there’s that wolf-man get-up over there.
At the time, Goldblum’s filming the opening segment for his latest episode of The World According to Jeff Goldblum, a streaming documentary series courtesy of Nat Geo and Disney+. Yet, simultaneously, he’s also being transported back to childhood and career obsessions. Like everyone else visiting the Immortal Masks shop that day, Goldblum loves monsters. But unlike those other fine folks, he’s actually played one of the most famous monsters ever unleashed on cinemas: the grotesque Brundlefly in David Cronenberg’s 1986 version of The Fly.

"When Sherman Met Frankenstein"
By Mark Cerulli
To celebrate the release of producer Sam Sherman’s memoir, When Dracula Met Frankenstein (Murania Press) Cinema Retro presents this exclusive interview with the man himself. In our two-hour conversation, the filmmaker demonstrated a virtual photographic memory when discussing his remarkable 60 plus year career. Our interview was a time capsule of the drive-in era where creative marketing, distribution and production exemplified the true spirit of independent filmmaking.
Sam Sherman grew up a horror and western film fan. The first horror film Sam ever saw was Universal’s classic monster comedy, Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) which captivated his imagination at a very young age. Following his dream, he attended City College of New York to study filmmaking. Like most Cr readers, he was also an avid collector – in his case, horror stills, which one imagines were...

After performing in internationals film for five decades, the German-born character actor Udo Kier is getting rave reviews for a rare Hollywood leading role in “Swan Song.” And at age 76, Kier says he’s hoping the role is no swan song for him: it’s just the beginning of a new phase of his career.
“I am really, really, a little bit surprised but pleasantly surprise that I made 50 years of movies, and now everybody writes: ‘After 50 years, finally Udo Kier is a leading man!’” Kier told Variety on Thursday night at the Los Angeles premiere of the film at iPic Theaters in Westwood. “Which is very nice of you all, the press. But for me, it’s going to be difficult because now in the future, I only want to do leading roles – unless it’s David Lynch or some great director. That’s a different story. I’m very,...

By now, Daniel Radcliffe has probably made peace with the fact that he’ll be fielding Harry Potter questions for the rest of his life. The blockbuster family-friendly fantasy series made the young actor a household name over eight movies between 2001 and 2011, and Radcliffe definitely seems to have chosen his roles carefully since Deathly Hallows Part 2 essentially marked the end of his Wizarding World journey.
After the concluding part of the saga was released, Radcliffe tried his hand at the horror genre with The Woman in Black and Victor Frankenstein, comedy with Swiss Army Man, Miracle Workers and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and plenty of action and drama projects to boot.
But most interviews with the actor tend to check in with how he retrospectively views his time in the Harry Potter franchise, and what its possible future might be as a once $7.7 billion cinematic box office juggernaut. After all, Hollywood...

Wes Craven was a master of horror movies. The Cleveland native, who made his directorial debut with 1972’s “The Last House on the Left,” gave us spine-chilling classics “The Hills Have Eyes” and “Swamp Thing” before introducing fans to “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” and the “Scream” franchise. Craven’s other credits include “The People Under the Stairs,” “Vampire in Brooklyn,” and, taking his oeuvre in a slightly different direction, the drama “Music of the Heart” starring Meryl Streep.

It’s been a long 16 months without in-person concerts and festivals, and as Lollapalooza returned for Day Two at Chicago’s Grant Park on Friday, attendees and artists alike were all still feeling their way into the new normal. While official attendance numbers were not made available, the grounds did not appear to be at its typical 100,000-person capacity. Though it was busy and packed tighter near stages (and it got more crowded as the day wore on), there was still a decent amount of space away from the front...

While Grammy nominations usually include many commercial picks, the awards pride themselves on being decided by music industry peers judging quality over popularity, even banning chart-related messages in FYC ads recently. So we often can expect a couple of critical darlings to get nominated across genres and sometimes even in the general field. Nominations this past year for Haim’s “Women In Music Pt. III” in Album of the Year and Phoebe Bridgers in Best New Artist are examples of how far acclaim can take you at the Grammys. Granted, we don’t know how this will hold up with no more nomination review committees giving a boost to lower-profile acts. Nonetheless, there are a lot of lauded artists who might surprise us this year.

When it comes to comic books, the natural thought most of us have is that of costumed heroes and villains with otherworldly superpowers. No matter where you go for your entertainment—be it movies, television, or video games—it won't take long to come across any of the characters we've all come to know from the "Big 2" Publishers.
While superheroes may be the bread and butter of the industry, what about the other stories of comics? Ones that are on the darker, spookier side of lore?
Horror in comics is hardly a new concept, dating back as far as the beginning of the Golden Age of the 1940s and ’50s. At that time, most were adaptations of popular fiction works such as Eerie Comics' New Adventures of Frankenstein and Classic Comics' Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The genre really found its footing when EC Comics introduced the world to what...

Rapper Tyler the Creator debuted at number-one on the Billboard 200 with his new album “Call Me If You Get Lost.” It’s his sixth album, but surprisingly he has only been nominated for three Grammys in his career, and he only won once. Will this be his ticket to his first Album of the Year nomination?
Well, technically it wouldn’t be his first nomination in that category. His very first bid from the recording academy was Album of the Year, but it was as a featured artist on Frank Ocean‘s “Channel Orange” in 2013. His first nomination as a lead artist didn’t come until his fourth album, “Flower Boy,” was nominated for Best Rap Album in 2018. And then his followup, “Igor,” won Best Rap Album in 2020.

Hello, dear readers! Tomorrow, we kick off a brand new month, which means we have a whole new batch of horror and sci-fi headed to VOD, Digital, and Streaming platforms in the next few weeks to enjoy as we do our best to stay inside and beat the heat of these dog days of summer. With that in mind, we have a lot of great films and series to look forward to, including the Fear Street trilogy on Netflix, The Tomorrow War on Amazon, Josh Ruben’s Werewolves Within (you can read my review Here), Megan Fox in Till Death (a movie this writer really dug), and a handful of great indie horror is heading to Shudder throughout July, too, including The Boy Behind the Door (another film that I really enjoyed during last year’s Fantastic Fest).

It certainly must feel good to say “I told you so.” Back in 2011, a then 20-year-old Tyler, the Creator routinely took to social media to profess a slate of ambitious goals. A Grammy Award. They seemed outlandish for the ascendant star, fresh from jumping on an unsuspecting Jimmy Fallon’s back during Odd Future’s live TV debut. But, as the story goes, Tyler has achieved those peaks and more. His career is a blueprint for internet-bred fame, making...

Yorgos Lanthimos is a filmmaker that loves to surprise audiences. Whether it’s his unique tone, a somewhat absurd premise, or his eclectic casts, a Yorgos Lanthimos film is always going to be a fun experience. And that trend isn’t stopping with the upcoming feature, “Poor Things,” as we already know the tone and premise are right in the filmmaker’s wheelhouse, but now with the latest addition to the cast, Lanthimos continues to surprise us with his choices.

Rian Johnson has been generating buzz for days with the cast announcements for “Knives Out 2”, but he’s not the only filmmaker assembling a dream ensemble. Enter “Poor Things,” the new movie from “The Lobster” and “The Favourite” visionary Yorgos Lanthimos. Variety confirms Jerrod Carmichael is the latest addition to the “Poor Things” cast, which already includes Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, and Ramy Youssef.
“Poor Things” is set in Victorian-era England and is being described as a riff on the classic Frankenstein story. Stone, reuniting with Lanthimos after “The Favourite,” plays a young woman named Belle Baxter who is brought back to life by an eccentric and brilliant scientist, Dr. Godwin Baxter (Dafoe). That’s the only official plot details being released at this time, although the plot is being teased as “a story of love, discovery and scientific daring, featuring Youssef as Max McCandless, Ruffalo as Duncan Wedderburn,...

The man with eyebrows that can kill! Not really, but that’s the impression given by the poster illustration. The Baker/Berman producing team gave their Hammer/Terence Fisher imitation a decent production — good color, autopsy-grade gore, female victims in low-cut gowns — but neither Jimmy Sangster’s script nor the flat direction bring it to life. Donald Wolfit is the resurrected mad doctor stealing transfusion blood and committing murders with the help of his deformed servant Victor Maddern but the highlight is the strong performance from favorite scream queen Barbara Shelley. With the Grammys getting rid of their secret nomination review committees altogether after backlash over alleged vote-rigging and a lack of transparency, a lot of questions have arisen as to what the award show will look like now. While controversial, the committees have shaped what the competition looks like. Now that they’re gone, what can we expect from the nominations from now on? Here are four trends to watch out for.
SEE2021 Latin Grammys: Will Bad Bunny and Kali Uchis lead the way at these awards later this year? Fewer Wtf picks
Perhaps the biggest change will come in the likely absence of those head-scratcher, how-did-they-get-in picks that had become a staple of the Grammys these past few years. While we can never count out surprises at these awards, expect fewer albums like Jacob Collier’s “Djesse Vol. 3” to make the cut over widely predicted, buzzy projects from big name stars.

“I should have killed Andy.” – Jimmy McDonough
In 1987 Andy Milligan was working on his latest film, a bloody revenge saga with a Frankenstein theme called Monstrosity. His biographer Jimmy McDonough was by his side, working the clapper, absorbing Milligan’s abuse, and taking notes on the final years of the director, still a poisonous devil when the mood took him. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1929, dead 62 years later in Los Angeles, Milligan wore his resentments like a crown, shoveling contempt on anyone who crossed his path—including his audience.

Do not adjust your WiFi settings. No, you are not experiencing a severe case of Deja Streaming-vu. HBO Max’s list of new releases for May 2021 are indeed highlighted by two very recent WarnerMedia hits.
For starters, Tenet finally makes its long-awaited HBO Max this month. Mark your calendars as May 1 is the day that you can finally watch Christopher Nolan’s latest cerebral thriller. Of course, Tenet already had its theatrical release, but obviously that was not really an option for many of us. In addition to Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984 makes its triumphant return to HBO Max this month on May 13. The Wonder Woman sequel already premiered on HBO Max this past December, now it’s getting a second run on the streamer.
In terms of newer originals, May is relatively light for HBO Max. The Jean Smart-starring comedy Hacks premieres on May 13. The latest Adventure Time...

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.
In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...
