Are you shocked to learn the author of /Film's three Halloween Horror Nights articles this year is a haunted attraction addict? Invite me to your Halloween mazes, hayrides, docked ocean liners, and Shaqtoberfests. I crave haunt season entertainment. Even better, I crave "Haunt Season Horror" movies. Is that trademarked? Can I coin that terminology?
Haunt Season Horror titles must take place in a Horror Nights-like maze or immersive experience, turning seasonal amusements into slaughterhouse backdrops. Marquee examples would be "Hell Fest," your corporate-branded Six Flags Fright Fest take, or "The Houses October Built," which ventures into the less moderated realm of do-it-yourself haunts. These films prey upon the rational fears of patrons who attend these pop-up "Scarehouses," stripping away the safety of regulated horror experiences. What happens when a killer infiltrates a place where commercial terror is purchased at a premium? It's the ultimate Halloween treat.

Since watching it with my friends at our annual Scary Movie Marathon years ago, The Houses October Built has been one of my favorite found footage horror films, perfectly encapsulating the "wait, is this real?" vibe of The Blair Witch Project and infusing it into the world of real-life scare attractions throughout autumnal America. This year marks one decade since The Houses October Built was released, and its approach to immersive horror is even more timely now that when it first graced screens back in 2014 and introduced viewers to Brandy, Zack, Bobby, Mikey, and Jeff, a quintet of thrill-seekers filming a documentary on haunted attractions who gradually get pulled into the wicked web of Blue Skeleton: a haunt that is extremely immersive and more real than they could ever imagine.
But that is only one iteration of the film that many horror fans like myself know and love. There...

From the creators of found footage movie The Houses October Built comes Will Helm, an upcoming proof-of-concept horror short starring Spencer Charnas from Ice Nine Kills.
Directed by Bobby Roe and written by Zack Andrews & Bobby Roe, Will Helm is hitting the festival circuit this Halloween season, and Bloody Disgusting has an exclusive preview.
The plot of Will Helm is under wraps, but it will be premiering at Sitges and Screamfest next month. It will also show at the Knoxville Horror Film Fest before an anniversary screening of Wes Craven’s New Nightmare at the drive-in part of the festival.
From what we gather, there is an unofficial A Nightmare on Elm Street component in Will Helm and it acts as something of a meta combo piece for the Wes Craven classic.
Bobby Roe tells Bloody Disgusting, “We are hoping to follow in the footsteps of Smile, Night Swim and Lights Out.

Haunted houses are part and parcel of the horror genre. The very first narrative horror movie ever filmed, George Méliès' "Le Manoir du Diable" ("The House of the Devil") from 1896, is arguably a haunted house movie. From there, Gothic, labyrinthian structures such as castles and rural manors were recontextualized as ghostly abodes overflowing with the supernatural. From "The Uninvited" to "House on Haunted Hill," the early history of horror is the history of haunted houses.
With the release of "Poltergeist" in 1982, ghosts gentrified the suburbs, taking up residence in neighborhoods and subdivisions. The haunted house subgenre has consistently reinvented itself, subverting expectations and adding new wrinkles to...

Joseph and Vanessa Winter's "Deadsteam" recalls and channels the time a ragtag collective shot their would-be cult famous "Evil Dead" on renegade terms. A derelict, boarded-up estate deep in Utah's woodlands. A skeleton crew. Low budgets, high spirits, and minimal tolerance for digital effects over creepily original practical crafts. Not to say "Deadstream" will do for Screenlife horror what "Evil Dead" did to the cabin-in-the-woods subgenre. Still, the Winters lay a harder-than-it-looks template that future filmmakers will attempt to replicate through newer livestream techno-horror lenses.

There’s a new horror house in town.
Welcome Villain Films, a studio specializing in genre fare, launched on Thursday as a fully integrated shop to develop, produce, market and distribute movies. Welcome Villain Films already has two features in the works, a reimagining of “Last Shift,” as well as an untitled slasher project from the creators of “The Houses October Built.”
The company’s mission is to “empower creators of all levels, bridging the gap between studio and artist to consistently deliver edgy and exciting films in the horror and genre space,” according to a press release.
Welcome Villain Films has started to shape its executive team, which is currently comprised of four partners: Bonner Bellew as head of operations, Dan Clifton as head of production, Luke Labeau as head of development, and Eric Kleifield as head of creative. It plans to expand the leadership group as the year progresses.

Happy Halloweekend, dear readers! The best weekend of the year has finally arrived, and I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to indulge in all sorts of spooky shenanigans over the next few days. For this Halloween edition of “From Streams to Screams,” I decided to focus on horror movies that have come out in the last few years that would be perfect to enjoy while celebrating the arrival of Halloween.
If you’re anything like me, I tend to focus a lot on my favorite horror movies throughout the month of October to feed my nostalgia. So this year, I’ve been trying to check out some recent horror movies I may have missed in an effort to broaden my horizons a bit. With that in mind, I put together a list of 25 recent horror films that are currently streaming that should either deliver up some thrills and chills,...

“Isolation,” a horror anthology film, has finished its principal photography shooting entirely in quarantine.
The film weaves together nine standalone, yet interconnected, horror stories from all corners of the world. It follows people as they confront their biggest fears in attempts to survive an increasingly deadly pandemic, a premise that hits close to home for many people during the coronavirus crisis.
The teams of filmmakers on the project include Dennie Gordon; Larry Fessenden; Bobby Roe (“The Houses October Built”); Andrew Kasch (“Tales Of Halloween”); Zach Passero (“Wicked Lake”) and Christian Pasquariello (“Alien Invasion: S.U.M. 1”). The anthology will also showcase new voices in horror with films by Alexandra Neary (“The Innocent”), Alix Austin and Keir Siewert (“Retch”), and Kyle I. Kelley and Adam Brown (“The Music Lesson”).
For “Isolation,” producer Nathan Crooker created a fictional world set many months in the future that is based around the coronavirus pandemic.

Members of fandoms express their love of a property in different ways, with fan films being one of the most expressive declarations of passion. A Halloween fan movie, titled simply Halloween Night, has now been released online in its entirety and is viewable above.
Made for $10,000 and funded through Indiegogo, the film is the creation of writer-director Jp DeStefano, and is set in Haddonfield in the modern day, where Michael Myers and his night of stalking and murder over 40 years previously have become a distant memory. However, the past never stays at rest and the knife-wielding incarnation of pure evil has returned to wreak havoc once again.
The movie is clearly made from a position of affection for and familiarity with the original, as its atmosphere and visual style are perfect imitations of John Carpenter’s slasher classic. Numerous tropes are invoked and played with, such as Michael being seen...

On Halloween night, a group of college friends travel to a remote country location to enter an extreme haunted house attraction. Extreme because it promises to feed on all their darkest fears. But the night turns deadly as they come to the horrifying realization that some nightmares are real and the mischief-makers behind the enterprise are something else altogether.
Films about Halloween-set haunted house attractions are nothing new, so what can a film, by the writers of the well-received, critcally-acclaimed, audience-pleasing A Quiet Place, bring to the genre? If they hype is to be believed, a lot. However in truth it turns out nothing much really. And nothing that wasn’t done a Lot better by The Houses October Built (aka The Houses of Halloween).

Happy October, boils and ghouls! Now that our favorite month has officially kicked off, that means many of us are putting together a list of must-watch movies to get into the Halloween spirit. With that in mind, this writer has once again pulled together a varied list of 31 (well, technically more than 31, but who can resist cheating a bit when it comes to horror movies?) films that are currently streaming on Netflix that should undoubtedly get you primed for the big day on October 31st.
It’s worth noting that several great titles not included on this list are making their way to Netflix during October that would also make for great Scary Movie Month additions, including Cult of Chucky on 10/3, Raw on 10/4, and the Stephen King adaptation 1922 on 10/20, with season 2 of Stranger Things kicking off on 10/27.
Happy viewing, everyone, and look for more Halloween-related articles coming your way all month long,...

Back in 2014, The Houses October Built brought a different perspective to low-budget Halloween horror movies by profiling the experiences of a group of thrill-seekers touring a series of “extreme” haunted house attractions and the frightening consequences of their recklessness. Never especially distinctive in its filmmaking, storytelling or performances, it certainly wasn’t the type of horror film with “franchise” written all over it.
If its sequel could be considered a step up in profile, since The Houses October Built 2 is being distributed by Rlj Entertainment (which handled home video duties on the original), it certainly doesn’t demonstrate an improvement...

In 2014, The Houses October Built quickly became a modern cult hit among horror fans, and now the entire team has returned for a sequel that features the same of haunt enthusiasts (Bobby Roe, Zack Andrews, Brandy Schaefer, Mikey Roe, and Jeff Larson) who set out to profile a new batch of scare-minded attractions, only to find themselves on the run from the infamous “Blue Skeleton” group that left them traumatized after some terrifying Halloween shenanigans the year prior.

If you haven't seen The Houses October Built yet, I would recommend incorporating it into your autumn viewing schedule this year, because it really captures the spooky spirit of the haunted house season, something that the film's sequel looks to do in the first trailer for the follow-up film.

The Funhouse Massacre presents itself as just another indiscriminate indie-horror flick, but as someone who’s been fooled by many similarly crafted duds, I can assure you that this roadside slaughterhouse is a much more enjoyable beast. Writer Ben Begley, who also plays a bumbling deputy, is not only able to craft a horror flick that’s loads of hellish fun, but this colorful massacre remain consistently funny throughout – not an easy task for scary comedies these days. While Begley’s tongue-in-cheek antics become a bit overplayed in a few instances, it fares far better than most jovial copycats of the same ilk, and holds its own against modern gore-chucklers with much bigger budgets. In the vein of a much more over-the-top The Houses October Built, The Funhouse Massacre is one of 2015’s hidden horror gems despite a smaller-format rollout, loaded with guts and bursting with psycho-carnie ferocity.

While reflecting on an entire year’s worth of horror movies may sound like a tremendous chore, there’s no better feeling than reliving some of your favorite cinematic moments after the dust has settled and no more films remain unreleased. Sure, sifting through the worst of the worst may be not be an enviable task – which I did for my Worst Horror Movies Of 2014 feature already – but my “Best Of” work is where the movie Gods show their mercy. This is my exploration of the best horror had to offer this year, and my chance to tip my hat towards those horror films that remind me why a genre full of murder, mayhem, and spooky horrors provides the highest highs that Hollywood can provide.

One of the best things about Halloween is seeing scare houses set up all over the U.S, from local groups to major organisations like Universal Studios holding the annual Halloween Horror Nights. The Houses October Built takes this concept and uses it to ask an intriguing question – what if real evil lurked behind the mask of any of the scare actors?
This film had me sold on its premise alone – a group of friends take a road trip across America looking for the most extreme scare house but are most unprepared for what they end up uncovering.
The film falls into the ‘found footage’ sub genre and borrows from the best and worst of the lot, providing some ingenious and unsettling moments that will stay with you but also coming with a handful of what are now found footage film clichés that only...

Just when you think you have seen every conceivable version of a found footage movie, one comes along with a fresh and unnerving angle. That movie is The Houses October Built, which was co-written and directed by Bobby Roe.
The film follows five friends who rent an Rv and travel from town to town visiting the haunted houses that are put up for Halloween. However, this group isn’t terribly interesting in checking out typical haunted houses. Instead, they are determined to visit some underground Halloween haunts which promise an extremely horrifying time for those who dare to enter them. They soon discover what they’re looking for, but things then take a very, very dark turn.
At the recent press day that was held for the film, I had the chance to speak with Roe, as well as his cast (Brandy Schaefer, Zack Andrews, Mikey Roe and Jeff Larson), for an exclusive interview.
