Roadside Attractions has dropped a trailer for “Dreamin’ Wild,” Bill Pohlad’s follow-up to 2015’s “Love & Mercy.” The film stars Oscar winner Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”) and Emmy nominee Walton Goggins (“The Hateful Eight”) as brothers Donnie and Joe Emerson, musicians who unexpectedly find success when the owner of a boutique label (“Air’s” Chris Messina) wants to revive an incomplete album they self-released three decades earlier. This bittersweet stroke of luck dredges up a painful past but also provides the opportunity for closure. Noah Jupe (“A Quiet Place”) and Jack Dylan Grazer (“It”) portray the pair as teens. Beau Bridges co-stars as their father, and Zooey Deschanel plays Donnie’s wife, singer Nancy Sophia.
The film, based on a longform essay by New York Times reporter Steven Kurutz titled “Fruitland,” premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, where Marshall Shaffer (The Playlist) wrote, “‘Dreamin’ Wild’ amounts to...

In January, work and life partners Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff went to war.
Their 15-year-old film distribution and production company, Roadside Attractions, engaged in heated rounds of bidding for four titles playing at the Sundance Film Festival — the Cinderella story “Brittany Runs a Marathon,” the Mindy Kaling comedy “Late Night,” the political documentary “Knock Down the House” and the Ted Bundy biopic “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile.”
They lost. They were outbid by what Cohen and d’Arbeloff estimate was as much as six times what they offered sales agents for the chance to roll out the movies to American audiences. Amazon Studios snapped up “Brittany” and “Late Night” for a combined $27 million. Netflix acquired “Extremely Wicked” and “Knock Down the House” for nearly $20 million.
“All four of those movies went to streamers, and arguably all four might have been better served by us,” says Cohen, reflecting...

A dozen new specialty titles packed theaters this weekend. Sony Classics’ The Seagull and Roadside Attractions/30West’s Beast edged out the competition, grossing $80,607 in six locations and $52,078 in four theaters respectively.
The big screen version of Russian dramatist Anton Checkhov’s The Seagull opened in six New York and Los Angeles locations Friday, scoring the best per theater average of the specialty newcomers. Directed by Michael Mayer and starring Annette Bening, Saoirse Ronan, Corey Stoll and Elisabeth Moss, the feature grossed $80,607, averaging $13,434. Spc picked up the title in 2017, but held off releasing while it opened Bening starrer Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool. The producers showed an early version of The Seagull to Spc co-president Michael Barker, who gave notes.
“We addressed those notes in the final edit,” said producer Leslie Urdang in a conversation earlier this week about the film. “We give real kudos to him for helping us.

It’s fun making Oscar nominations picks this year because there’s more room for debate than usual. The top five Best Picture candidates are pretty clear, led by the Critics Choice and Producers Guild winner “The Shape of Water,” and the Screen Actors Guild Ensemble, Actress and Supporting actor winner “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
The next three Best Picture leaders come from lauded writer-directors: SAG Ensemble, PGA and Directors Guild nominees “Lady Bird” (Greta Gerwig) and “Get Out” (Jordan Peele) and DGA and PGA nominee “Dunkirk” (Christopher Nolan).
If you stick with the stats, they reveal that SAG Ensemble winners don’t always match up with the Best Picture winner. (Last year’s Ensemble winner was “Hidden Figures.”) But over 22 years of Ensemble Awards, only “Braveheart” (1995) managed to take home the Oscar without an Ensemble nomination.
Thus, will “The Shape of Water,” which won the often-predictive top Critics’ Choice and Producers Guild awards,...

In Contracted a 20-something girl gets what she thinks is an Std after a night of reckless partying… turns out, it’s far worse than anything she could ever have imagined. Writer-director Eric England puts a strange, sexual new twist on the zombie genre, and he’s here to explain how and why!
Dread Central: Ok, so let’s face it… Contracted (review here) isn’t for everybody. How’s reaction to the film been so far?
Eric England: Really positive actually. I am really happy with how they…. I don’t wanna say I am shocked, but I don’t think you go in thinking they are going to love it. It’s been really good.
DC: I would have to say I was shocked, I will use the word, because it's not the kind of movie that is just another viral zombie thing… you really put a unique slant on it.

This past weekend indie filmmaker Eric England (Madison County) celebrated the world premiere of his latest directorial endeavor, the Hitchcockian thriller Roadside, at the first-ever CineMayhem Film Fest in Thousand Oaks.
The flick stars Ace Marrero, Katie Stegeman, Jack E. Curenton, Lionel D. Carson, and Marshall Yates.

Madison County was released this week on DVD and I had a chance to speak with director/writer Eric England and co-star/producer Ace Marrero. During our talk, I learned about the inspiration for the film, the difficulties of financing an indie horror film, and their next project:
How did this project come together and what was your inspiration?
Eric: I grew up in Arkansas and visited Madison County because my grandfather lived there. Based on my experiences and little encounters with people, I decided to embellish them for a horror film. The more I wrote, the more people identified with it. Ace was the first person I sent the script to in early 2009. From there we just tried to get it made and it came together in 2010.
Ace, what was your relationship with Eric before you worked on the project together?
Ace: I auditioned for Eric’s thesis film...

In just under two years, up-and-coming filmmaker Eric England has already left quite an impression on the independent genre world. His feature film debut Madison County debuted to a sold-out crowd during La's Screamfest last October and is set to make its home release this May.
His follow-up feature, Roadside is currently being wrapped up and will undoubtedly showcase a different side of the director and for his third project, he's teaming up with several other indie filmmakers on the rise for the cautionary body horror flick Contracted which begins shooting soon as well.
As you can tell, England's not one to rest on his laurels; recently Dread Central had the opportunity to catch up with the ever-busy director to chat about the release of Madison County, the status of Roadside as well as more on his latest project and what the independent filmmaking world has taught him over the last few years.

You're going to need protection from this forthcoming David Cronenberg-esque horror flick. Bloody Disgusting exclusively learned that Eric England will be getting behind the camera for Contracted, a new gory sex-thriller that begins filming May 13 in the Los Angeles area. We're told the film, penned by England, is about a young girl that has a one night stand with a random stranger and contracts what she thinks is an Std... but is actually something much worse. The project is a collaboration with the new production company BoulderLight Pictures, co-founded by Jd Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, and Southern Fried Films. England's slasher Madison County arrives on home video May 8 from Image Entertainment. His second feature, Roadside, hits the festival circuit this year.
