Resistance builds to Donald Trump’s attempts to build a golf resort near Aberdeen in this prescient documentary sequel
Four years ago, film-maker Anthony Baxter made a documentary about Donald Trump’s corporate behaviour in Scotland that gave people here an idea of how his arrogance and racism feels. But despite being shown to critics and appearing at festivals, his film was buried in a blizzard of legal threats, and never really got publicly shown. Only now has Baxter found a distributor to take it on. In fact, this film is a sequel.
The first film, You’ve Been Trumped in 2012, was about Trump’s breathtaking arrogance in attempting to vandalise a beautiful coastline near Aberdeen to build a golf resort, making all sorts of bland promises on job creation (the sort that he made to US citizens before the presidential election) and finding that the Scottish political establishment was an absolute pushover.

As far as cinematic careers go, director Anthony Baxter has certainly carved out a curious niche. His debut documentary, "You've Been Trumped," chronicled the promises made and rules broken as Donald Trump endeavored to build a world-class golf course on a pristine and environmentally diverse piece of Scotland shoreline. Now, a few years on from that film, Baster returns with Trump in his sights again for "A Dangerous Game." Baxter is clearly angry about the real estate tycoon's arrogance and the politicians in Scotland's parliament who cater to his whims. However, the filmmaker's fury is often unfocused and the documentary swings wildly in a bunch of directions but rarely lands any crucial punches. You won't need to have seen 'Trumped' (I haven't) to dive into "A Dangerous Game," as you're given the basics of what you need to know, with the scope of 'Dangerous Game' expanding to allow...

Well, Donald Trump is running for President, which means at the very least we're in for an entertaining year. But it also means the real estate tycoon's wheeling and dealings will be scrutinized even more than normal, and the timing couldn't be better for filmmaker Anthony Baxter, who continues to shine a shameful light on Trump with "A Dangerous Game," his followup to "You've Been Trumped." And today we have an exclusive clip from the doc. In "You've Been Trumped," Baxter investigated Trump's aggressive and ultimately successful push to build a golf course in Aberdeen, Scotland, where local political figures gladly pushed aside environmental laws and other regulations to allow construction on pristine shoreline. Trump has always acted with plentiful hubris, which gets a clear demonstration in this scene from "A Dangerous Game," in which his golf course is honored with a fancy hospitality award from The American Academy Of Hospitality.

★★★★☆Anthony Baxter's You've Been Trumped was one of the unexpected gems of 2011; a blood-boiling j'accuse at American fat cat Donald Trump and, more specifically, his construction of a luxury golf course for the super-rich on a portion of Aberdeenshire's vast and pristine coastal sand dunes. Fobbed off by Trump's cronies at every turn and even arrested by local police without due cause, Baxter succeeded in exposing the same type of expansionist greed so fabulously lampooned in Bill Forsyth's Local Hero (1983). What a pleasant surprise, then, to see Baxter 'trump' his own inaugural outing with follow-up A Dangerous Game (2014), which takes the fight to Donald and his capitalist kind across the globe.

We're still going. Another revew of The Apprentice. More bad booze. All because a small number of you asked us for it.
"Will you be quiet, you silly shit?"
If you were in a position to potentially cause irritation to Donald Trump, would you? I've concluded that I would. I arrived at this decision having observed the American Lord Sugar knock-off's Twitter feed over a period of weeks. At first, I thought it was funny. Then, I realised he was serious. Not even in a clever, ironic way. This man actually believed the words that he was tapping into his gold-plated computer.
I've subsequently learned that few things annoy Donald Trump more than people saluting Anthony Baxter's excellent documentary, You've Been Trumped. This is a film that charts Trump's battle to build a golf course on an area of natural beauty in Scotland.

• You've Been Trumped alleges bullying by Us property magnate
• Fury at 'biased and manipulative' documentary on golf resort
Donald Trump tried to force the BBC to drop the broadcast of a critically acclaimed documentary on his alleged bullying of residents near his Scottish golf resort.
Lawyers for the New York property magnate contacted the BBC two days before the feature-length film You've Been Trumped was screened on BBC2 on Sunday night, claiming it was highly defamatory, biased and misleading, and demanding a right of reply.
In a letter to the BBC from Dundas & Wilson, a prominent Scottish law firm which has acted for Trump for several years, and seen by the Guardian, the Trump organisation threatened to complain formally to Ofcom and the BBC Trust if the screening went ahead.

Us billionaire's right-hand man hits back after Bill Forsyth accuses magnate of 'egotistical bullying'
The film-maker Bill Forsyth has been described by Donald Trump's organisation as a "misinformed jackass" after he accused the property magnate of "egotistical bullying" at his golf course near Aberdeen.
In an article for the Guardian, Forsyth said there were strong parallels between Trump's efforts to remove local people living next to his now mothballed £750m golf resort and Forsyth's fictional Us billionaire in his cult classic Local Hero from 1983, which won the best film Bafta.
The director said You've Been Trumped, an award-winning documentary investigating the experiences of Trump's nearest neighbours being shown on BBC2 this Sunday, was "akin to 1970s Romania".
He said: "We're watching real lives and livelihoods mercilessly put to hazard by a malign concoction of egotistical bullying, corporate muscle-flexing, craven averting of gaze by national politicians and crass misreading of events by local authorities,...

For Bill Forsyth, the director of the classic film Local Hero, watching a documentary on the impact of Donald Trump's golf course on local residents left him 'dazed and shocked'. Here he explains why
I make things up for a living. I don't get out much and I haven't allowed a newspaper in the house for thirty years, so I truly live in a world of fiction. I've got by with Louis B Mayer's definition of a documentary being a film without girls in it, while a semi documentary has one girl. Recently however, I've been obliged to confront reality head-on in the form of the film You've Been Trumped.
It turns out that an old piece of fiction of mine, Local Hero, bears unavoidable comparison with real life events in Aberdeenshire where the property developer Donald Trump is building his "world class" golf resort, captured in Anthony Baxter...

In 2005, Donald Trump announced plans to build two golf courses and a 450 bedroom hotel at the Menie Estate on Scotland’s east coast. The bad news for local residents? Trump’s golf complex was to be situated on the Menie Estate’s dunes, a beautiful wilderness area and a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. The bad news for Trump? British journalist Anthony Baxter decided to make a documentary about what he regarded as a David-and-Goliath struggle between the local population and the Apprentice star.

Now that we're into the first week of August, the end of the summer is in sight and the theatrical releases will soon start dropping off in quality. In fact, that drop in quality may have already begun this weekend with Len Wiseman's remake of Total Recall being the only major release along with the third installment in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. In select theatres, we've got 360 from the director of City of God, the Broken Lizard comedy The Babymakers starring Paul Schneider and Olivia Munn, and a handful of documentaries including the Zach Galifianakis-produced Craigslist Joe. It's certainly not the strongest crop of new films, but it will be interesting to see how Total Recall performs and whether loyalty to the original will hold it back. What will you be watching this weekend? Total Recall Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days Soldiers of Fortune...

Following four consecutive weeks when Euro 2012 football saw a succession of commercially modest titles land into an ever-diminishing market, salvation for cinemas has arrived at last in the guise of a familiar costumed superhero. That's the second-highest opening of the year, after The Avengers on £15.78m, including £2.55m in previews. For a like-for-like comparison, looking just at the Friday-to-Sunday periods of the films' opening weekends, the new Spider-Man picture grossed 51% of Avengers' total.
If it continues in the same vein, it will get to around £26.5m in the UK, but Sony will be banking on a slower burnout. Five years ago, Sony's last Spider-Man movie, the third in the Sam Raimi trilogy, opened with...

The Amazing Spider-Man (12A)
(Marc Webb, 2012, Us) James Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Denis Leary. 136 mins
New, improved-formula Spider-Man: does whatever last decade's Spider-Man couldn't! The world was hardly screaming out for a rejigged "origins" story, but this at least gives you less comic-book primary colour and more teen-drama shading. Plus better special effects, although the rooftop monster-battle climax feels same-old. Yes, it's a brazenly commercial exercise, but Garfield's limber geekiness tips the balance.
God Bless America (15)
(Bobcat Goldthwait, 2011, Us) Joel Murray, Tara Lynne Barr, Mackenzie Brooke Smith. 105 mins
American media idiocy literally comes under fire in this outlandish Falling Down-meets-Natural Born Killers shooting spree.
The Hunter (15)
(Daniel Nettheim, 2011, Aus) Willem Dafoe, Frances O'Connor, Sam Neill. 102 mins
Dafoe's craggy gravitas dominates this scenic tale of a hunt for the extinct (or is it?) Tasmanian Tiger.
Strawberry Fields (15)
(Frances Lea, 2012, UK) Anna Madeley, Christine Bottomley.

This documentary about Donald Trump's bid to build a golf course in Scotland treads lightly between subtle portrait and panto smackdown
Superficially, this is a tub-thumper, a stonking panto smackdown between Donald Trump, riding roughshod over the law and the landscape in his bid to build a colossal golf course in Aberdeenshire, and the revolted locals fighting compulsory purchase. You've Been Trumped works rousingly as that: first-time director Anthony Baxter neatly marshals arguments and wrangles warring sides. He's helped by the scale of the hubris on display: the toadying and the arrogance, the cheek of the villains and the charm of their victims. But Trumped finds breath for subtler touches to make a complex portrait of a singular wilderness. It treads lightly on the earth: an example, as well as an education.

★★★★☆ Anthony Baxter's immensely compelling low budget documentary You've Been Trumped (2011) begins with a well-placed clip from Bill Forsyth's acclaimed Scottish comedy-drama Local Here (1983), which tells the story of a small coastal town standing up to a wealthy American oil tycoon. In Baxter's protest piece, Us billionaire Donald Trump plays the role of main antagonist, seemingly intent on destroying not only an area of biological and scientific, but also the lives of a sleepy fishing village's senior residents with his construction plans for a multi-million dollar luxury golf course.

Dark Horse (15)
(Todd Solondz, 2011, Us) Selma Blair, Jordan Gelber, Christopher Walken, Mia Farrow, Justin Bartha, Zachary Booth. 86 mins
Trust Todd Solondz to give us the flipside of movie man-childhood. There's nothing funny or adorable about 35-year-old Abe (Gelber), who lives with his parents, collects action figures and has no idea of his own uselessness. He meets his match (sort of) in the virtually comatose Blair, and what ensues is a romcom that's neither romantic nor comical, but beneath the misanthropy lurks some kind of compassion.
Killer Joe (18)
(William Friedkin, 2011, Us) Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple. 102 mins

Scotland’s Aberdeenshire coastline is home to some of Europe’s last remaining wilderness areas of shifting sand dunes. Dubbed "the Amazon Rainforest of Europe," by a leading scientist from the University of Glasgow, the irreplaceable land holds Britain’s top conservation ranking.
So when billionaire property developer Donald Trump expressed an interest to build a $1.2 billion golf resort on the precious coastline eight years ago, outraged local residents and environmentalists objected to the move and refused to sell their homes. Ignored by the Scottish government, the community has protested ever since.
Now, the Scottish residents have opted for a new tactic to outmaneuver the billionaire. With Queen's permission, according to the Scotsman, they've created a satirical musical spoof of Donald Trump -- as a 3 ft puppet -- singing "Bohemian Rhapsody."
The rewritten version of the 1975 smash hit tells the tale of the local community's struggle with the Trump empire since the development began.

Anthony Baxter challenges enquiry findings about You've Been Trumped arrest.
You've Been Trumped, an independent project made on a modest budget, has proven one of the most popular Scottish documentaries of the year. But in taking on tycoon Donald Trump, director Anthony Baxter made an influential enemy, and he and his colleague Richard Phinney were arrested in July last year on charges of trespassing. Now Baxter has received a formal apology from Grampian Police.

Donald Trump may claim he's "an environmentalist," but You've Been Trumped a new documentary paints another picture of the billionaire in his quest to build a dream golf resort along Scotland's coastal region.
Director Anthony Baxter follows Trump's every movement along with capturing the view of Scottish politicians in support of the job creation project, reports the Guardian. Locals residents and environmentalists against the construction also feature in the film.
With an environmental track record to balk at -- in August Trump spoke out against windfarms ruining his golf course view- that hasn't stopped filmmakers from inviting him to the screening in Edinburgh this week. The Hollywood Reporter says he's already going to be in Scotland, so we won't put it past him to attend.
Who knows? Maybe he'll even stay for the Q&A session after the documentary's debut.

You've Been Trumped: film reveals tycoon's ruthless efforts to build Scottish golf resort | Bob Ward
Documentary highlights how potential environmental damage has been disregarded because of the perceived benefits to the local economy
Members of the Scottish parliament should seize the chance to watch a special showing at Holyrood this Wednesday of an amazing film about Donald Trump's ruthless efforts to build a golf course on a Site of Special Scientific Interest (Sssi) in Alex Salmond's Aberdeenshire constituency.
You've Been Trumped raises serious doubts about the possible impacts of the development, which was given the go-ahead in November 2008 by Scottish ministers on the grounds that the purported economic benefits outweighed the severe environmental costs.
The film follows the brave struggle of local residents who oppose the proposed building of the coastal golf resort at the Menie Estate, near the village of Balmedie, eight miles north of Aberdeen.
The film's director, Anthony Baxter, throws a spotlight on the contemptuous way in which Trump deals with the residents,...

Us tycoon says golf course will open next year – but complex featuring luxury villas and five-star hotel postponed for now
Donald Trump has been forced to postpone his plan to create the "world's greatest" golf resort in Scotland, complete with five-star hotel and luxury villas, because of the global financial crisis.
The billionaire property developer flew into Aberdeen on Monday on his latest luxury jet, a Boeing 757-200 fitted out with a master bedroom and five kitchens, to announce that his championship standard 18-hole golf course overlooking the North Sea would open for play in July next year.
Before touring the first completed holes, Trump said he had spent £50m to £60m of his own money carving the "amazing" course from the vast dunes, and would start taking advance bookings in 10 days. He hoped that Sir Sean Connery, one of the earliest backers of the resort, would open it for him.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Point Blank Trailer It's this time of year when escapism reigns supreme. While I haven't really found anything that satisfies my need for Crank level...

From Morgan Spurlock to gripping portraits of activism, documentary has made a thrilling show of itself this year. Danny Leigh has the festival highlights
The first stroke of genius at this year's Sheffield Doc/Fest was obvious every time you set foot outside – its relocation from November to June. With the evenings instantly lengthened and the sun dappling the Yorkshire rooftops, it felt like the cosmos was smiling on an event that, at a time of cash-strapped tension for much of the film industry, had a hugely upbeat atmosphere.
There were the obligatory star cameos (Albert Maysles, Morgan Spurlock, Nick Broomfield) – but such illuminations felt like adjuncts rather than the whole point of a festival on the up. If the countless TV execs had been buoyed by the BBC's recent hymn to non-fiction of "quality and complexity", then film-makers and the zesty young filmgoers who crowded the Showroom cinema also...

You've Been Trumped is awarded Sheffield Doc/Fest's Green prize after director takes credit for halting Trump's presidential run
A documentary accusing Us mogul Donald Trump of riding roughshod over the concerns of locals in his efforts to build "the world's best golf course" on a previously untarnished strip of Scottish countryside has won praise and an environmental award following its first festival screening, even as its director was being labelled a "fraud" by the high-profile businessman.
You've Been Trumped, from Scottish film-maker Anthony Baxter, accuses Trump of bullying homeowners in an effort to clear the way for a $1bn (£615m) luxury development near Aberdeen. Judges at the 2011 Sheffield Doc/Fest, where the film was screened last week, handed it the Green prize and said: "We hope that this award will raise awareness and hold Donald Trump to account for his environmental and social belligerence, and expose the corruption and...

Lloyd Webber relaunches Love Never Dies, plus Donald Trump's golf course, Dave Stewart sells Hirst to save art, and Wilton's gets the thumbs down
Love Never Dies not dead yet
Andrew Lloyd Webber is positively beaming at the new version of his not-entirely-acclaimed Phantom sequel, Love Never Dies. It's "quite extraordinary", he told the Diary. The downside (unless you live there) is that it's in Melbourne. But Lloyd Webber, who was in the city for the opening last week, is optimistic that this version will eventually make it to London's West End, probably after opening in Sydney, Tokyo, Toronto, and then Broadway.
If you recall, Love Never Dies opened to grim reviews in March 2010 (it was dubbed Paint Never Dries by some), but then was rejigged by the producer Bill Kenwright. It's still not as good as it should be in Lloyd Webber's eyes, however.
The Melbourne show started almost from scratch.

Prior to the docu-world staking out Maryland for the upcoming edition of the Silverdocs, we now begin to look towards Europe for the next series of major doc-related film fests. Sheffield Doc/Fest, which runs from Wednesday June 8th to Sunday June 12th has a solid collection of best docs films so far in 2011, with much of the lineup being similar to this year's Hot Docs, even leading off on opening night with Morgan Spurlock's Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold as the Canadian fest did earlier this year. Over the course of the fest's five days I'll be covering a couple films from each of the major award categories. I'll be looking at a number of films that are playing in competition for the Special Jury Prize including Calvet, a doc making its world premier that looks at the the troubled life of artist Jean Marc Calvet,...
