I really shouldn't have liked this movie as much as I did. It's about Korean school girls and their growing up to be women. It's about as foreign to me as you can get.
Yet this, like a lot of other Korean and Japanese movies and TV shows I've been watching lately, is over the top in all the right places. The fight scenes are comical. The bullying in the schools is, I hope, exaggerated. Do Korean teachers really beat their kids up like that? I wish American teachers would do that.
Sunny was almost like the female version of this other Korean movie I saw recently, I believe it was called Brothers. Brothers had a more organized crime tilt; Sunny is more sentimental. Brothers was good; Sunny is great.
But, while I don't usually go for the sentimental flix, this one did it right somehow. It's the best chick flick I've seen in a long time. I'd say Koreans do the comedy/drama genre better than Hollywood ever has and Sunny proves it.

Or can I call it a great movie because its simplicity. Some may think this movie just a fairytale. But the fairytale was capture everybody's heart (yeah well, most of everybody). For me this movie had it all (drama, romance, comedy, even.. action!), all in a certain proportion that made me really sunk to the story.
The simple character, may we encountered in our everyday life or in our past or even in ourselves, (i think) really made the audiences to stay watching and enjoy the plot. The nostalgic feeling really strong in a good way, so we can enjoy the movie more because we were remembering our own happy memory especially with our friends.
Simple movie like this is what we need and what we can call great. Simple story can become a hit is something.
I may sound overly sentimental in this review, but that's how this movie made me, Hope ya'll enjoy it like I did :D

South Korean screen writers and directors have a great quality: Their ability to jerk tears and tuck heart strings. Sseo-ni is one of those movies with such director and screen writer.
This movie is not meant for audience under a certain age. It is not because the content is not suitable for a young audience. You need to have experiences and memories in order to get the nostalgia. In the movie, present time indicates the 25-year reunion, so that put girls in their teenage years in 1987. While the audience does not have to be people in their 40's, the story does need an audience that's been out of high school for about 5-10 years, weathered by life a little, knows what it means to lose one's innocence, and how desperately one wants to catch a glimpse of that innocence one used to have.
So for the reviewers who thinks the movie is all hype, I suggest to re-watch it in a few years. This movie will be a timeless classic.

I knew that this kind of movie, with people reminiscing about the old days and the deep meaning of friendship, if well carried out, be a big hit. So it was with Sunny. My friends saw it first and told me how much it got them to thinking of our own school days and how much they missed being together.
This movie made me tear up all the way through and really reminded me of my own special friends who I can't see very often now, being far away from home, and also my school days. We used to run around and dance like the characters of Sunny, and laugh louder than we can now. In those days, I think the value of friendship was so different, since we spent so much time together, my relationship with friends were mostly all that mattered. Now, as we grow older, we might believe that friendship is getting deeper, as much as the years gone by, but with our own separate careers and busy lives, we have to but understand how we are growing distant from each other and we must learn to be adults and just accept that.
Most importantly, I think this movie teaches us the way to be a friend. What it means to be a true friend, something that is too easily forgotten nowadays.
It is true that it's hard to keep up with each other during stressful and busy times, especially when we are all at different levels and stages in life, facing different problems; could be financial, business, family etc issues, things that we could not imagine during our school days, but, as with one of the sayings in the movie, we should keep an eye on our friends at all times. If they need help, we should give it to them till they become alright. Because if we don't, who can? That is the privilege of being a friend.
This movie is definitely a must-see. I want my mum to see it too but I'm afraid she will feel sad, more so than me, and I can also imagine that when my other friends see this, they will probably be reminded of the same things that I was reminded of. It was just such a beautifully made film.

Movie ''Sunny'' I have to say i watched this because i knew one of the actresses from a program, so i gave this movie a shot. And thank god i did.
The movie had it sad moments, but real funny moments too. The movie was moving me to tears but not only the sad moments moved me to tears, the funny parts of the movie did their job good too and on top of that it has some real life story line in it. I cried and laughed while watching and that made me think '' if this was the idea of the movie makers '' ,then he/they did a great job. That's what i want from a movie, this movie was what i want from every good movie.
The movie contains: friendship, comedy and real life. While i was watching the movie, i felt what the characters were feeling. I use to only love happy endings in a movie but i have learned to like/love movies with a bit of sad endings too.
To cut it short.. I loved this movie, it's now one of my favorites.
I recommend it to anyone.

This was a decent movie, but after I finished watching it. I still wondered why this movie was such a big hit in South Korea. The movie is basically about the bonding of a female High School gang type of group. And the story switches back and forth between when they were High School students to when they are adults. The bonding elements weren't done all that great but the nostalgic feel for some audiences might have made this movie a big hit. Overall the story itself didn't immerse me in this, but the bonding elements for some audiences might be enjoyable. The humor in this wasn't even clever or well crafted. Personally I didn't really enjoy this movie all that much and the main thing that kept me watching was Kang So-Ra to be honest. I asked few Korean girls who saw this and most of them seemed to have enjoyed it, mainly because of the group of girls working as a team and because of the friendship that was built. I just personally didn't think this movie was well crafted with those elements.

Aside from its minor flaws, this is easily a heartwarming drama about seven women who formed a powerful friendship since they were at school. Life happens and pulled them apart yet their friendship lasts forever. Definitely worth watching dramedy.

'Sunny' is a heartwarming comedy drama we can all relate to. Thinking back at our school days when we were full of life, ambition and dreams. And looking at our lives now, did we achieve those dreams?
This is essentially what 'Sunny' is all about. Na-Mi (Ho-jeong Yu) reflects on her school days after visiting a school friend who was diagnosed with cancer, with only two months to live. This could easily have been a sad, soppy story, but it is told in a lighthearted manner, and a very accurate illustration of school days. The characters are likable, and there's a lot of character development. There are the cliques, the bullies, the happiness, the memories.
I'm usually not a big comedy fan, but this was funny, and a lot of fun, too. The film also has an awesome soundtrack, bringing back even more memories. 'Sunny' is a touching story that will win you over in the blink of an eye. Wow, what an amazing film!

Very good commercial movie
Bit narcissism
However, one who loves starts with loving one's self.
20 years from now how many promise would u kept, how many dream would u fulfilled. R u the same girl as before?
No man ever steps in the same river twice.
This is a story of one's self. This kind of story always contain bit narcissism. However, one who really knows how to love, must starts with loving one's self.
This is a story of completion. To fulfill one's self, one sees the past as if it is today. Not be trapped nor forgotten, but do what u can, living at this moment, u r not the girl but still the girl.

Found this on tik tok of all places.. glad I did. I think all people can relate to childhood friends you lose touch with. The dialogue and filmmaking were incredible.
This is a breath of fresh air after watching so many recent Netflix flops.

If you miss your childhood or school friends, and haven't seen them in a long time, this is the movie to watch. It could make you cry...
I loved Nami's and Su-ji's characters. Thought they should have given Su-ji more screen time at the end.

GIRLS POWER
A feel-good friendship reunion film that among other things, features a played-for-laughs girl-gang fight amidst the backdrop of a 1980's Seoul protest / riot. The writing / plot was also exceptional, and while Sunny has a somewhat sad undertone, it's nicely contrasted with the unbridled freedom and happiness of their teenage years. The movie touches nicely upon a lot of issues, from teenage insecurities to loss to bullying, and provides a nice, realistic, but uplifting take on them. While life in high school may be full of youthful enthusiasm for the future, the movie recognizes that adulthood is different, and often times that youthful enthusiasm turns into guarded cynicism . But rather than accept that, the movie argues that we can still keep some of that optimism and enthusiasm as we age, especially with the support of our close friends As someone who also has a group of close friends, I can completely understand the bonds that these girls have. While we are still extremely close, I know it is inevitable that we will drift apart, like the girls in Sunny, as we move on to different careers and focus on our families. But, Sunny reminds me that these bonds of friendships will always remain, and that our memories of these times will forever tie us togethe

In a relaxed and humorous atmosphere, slowly send a warm story to your heart. My little black dress and this film are all warm and delicious. Suitable for slow aftertaste
Where should i start of with a great story been told about a reunion with lots of, love, emotion and energy.
Yoo Ho-jeong did a exceptional work to bring this movie a live. A super seven i would call the movie as all the girls are better then spice girls, with more story to share n their part.
Jin Hee-kyung share a great value to this Movie but my fav is Kang So-ra, here presence made this movie mre watchable. Just watch it and enjoy.

This movie has it all. I really don't understand why the overall rating shouldn't be a 10. They made a Japanese version which is almost as good but not as good as the original which is this one. Definitely a movie to watch. I highly recommend it. The actress who plays the young Nami was also in Ms. Granny she is very impressive in this as well.

Its been a long while that let me know what is old realtion . This is it . Plz whoever is going to watch this movie, don't just hesitate . Get a perfect subtitle, borrow some time and fly.
In Sunshine sisters Tao, there is a contrast between happiness and sadness, and fate: when she was a child, her mother's family loved a girl like gold, but when she grew up, she was rubbed by her husband's family; A girl who used to have a big mouth when she was a child, but when she grew up, she pretended to be forced and elegant, making a mess of herself; When I was a child, I aspired to become a beloved girl among thousands of people, but my mother and daughter were scattered in the dust; The girl with the strongest and most vigorous vitality in her childhood was the first to leave; A girl who loved to fantasize when she was young, but grew up to be an ordinary housewife. The sense of propriety is just right, which makes people sigh and not tear their hearts and lungs.

In fact, there are many problems in the film, the performance is too much, and so on.But still really moved.Familiar melody, friendship and love.At the end of the end of the good, finally there is no Korean film not off the problem, but rather some aftertaste. How I wish when I am old, I can dance with my little sisters.
Each new South Korean film look me stronger claims my belief that it is for these guys, not a Western film pipelines, the future of world cinema. As in the 90s there was a sharp rise in popularity of Korean music in East Asia, and later around the world, and Korean cinema giant strides gaining its rightful place in the sun, giving to the surface a masterpiece of a masterpiece.
"Solar" - the film primarily for the Koreans themselves, it their history, problems, life. But it really, people are the same everywhere, and the differences between them are so insignificant, that the story of friendship seven "solar" Korean girls are unlikely to be indifferent and harsh Siberian peasant with a bear and a balalaika, and ordinary American citizen, who in theory are not any side should take care of the mental torments housewife from Seoul.
Childhood protagonists not call too much fun, and for whom it was perfect? But fortunately for the girls, they have been a source of strength and joy - «Sunny», that is, they themselves, their group of friends and comrades, support and help, no matter what happens. Moment of parting company I think the most tragic in the whole film, the way friends apart, each will raging river of life, and not everyone will cope with their share had fallen to the troubles alone. A reunion of friends after a 25-year hiatus, not only gives rise to nostalgia old days, but each brings a "solar" hope. After all, whatever the problem, with such support can cope with anything.
Amused few local jokes, not for nothing did the film - a national blockbuster (Sunny looked every seventh Korean), as well as theme music - tracks 80th film added ease, which has become one of its main advantages. Special joy - the actress who played the main characters in his youth. In the movie, they are newcomers, but filled his hand on dramas and TV shows, new barrier successfully conquered. And with such success tape proposals for new work will not force myself to wait.
Ah yes, who can be advised this film? My personal opinion - all to get a modicum of optimism and faith in a better does not hurt anyone. And the option of initiation to the Korean film industry is far from the worst.

This was written 2021, a lot has happened. A lot of ideology is present in this era, no doubt.
But this somehow comes across as despite all this as a decent if not superior movie of coming of age movie from the Korean market. Yes I am new to it, yes I view as an outsider. But the consistency despite a slight political swing which can be ignored by the intelligent viewer as a project of coming of age as a woman in S. Korean world is telling.
I am new to the genre and open to question. But the story, execution, and ending feel right from the director and talent.
I do question how many actual "approved talent" is involved in Korean film/tv, but no more so that it seems less than in the west and despite amazing performances if this is a long term plan. As mirroring the west business model will become it's downfall.
But despite this well worth the watch. All excellent in, direction, cinematography, and story telling. Maybe a bit idealistic. But if the world could be luke this.... it would be a better place.
A nice look into Korean expression of disfunction amongst girls that could be telling in many other settings.
