Screenwriter Derek Kolstad wrote around 50 scripts before he finally broke through with the spec screenplay that became John Wick.

It’s an odd profession, screenwriting. There are some who’ve spent years trying to break into it, only to have their work changed to such a degree that their original idea has effectively vanished by the time it reaches the screen. There are others who get paid handsomely by studios to write screenplays that then wind up on a shelf, unused. For every celebrated screenwriter with millions in the bank and awards on their shelves, there are countless others who are behind on their rent and remain largely unknown.

Screenwriter Derek Kolstad, meanwhile, is something of an inspiration. He toiled away for years in the hope of making a career out of writing, and almost gave up when some of the low-budget movies he worked on didn’t bring in much of a salary.

Derek Kolstad is an American screenwriter and film producer who is best known as the co-creator of the John Wick franchise, one of the most successful and acclaimed action series in Hollywood. He has also written and produced other action films and shows, such as Nobody, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Splinter Cell. In this article, we will rank his movies from the worst to the best, based on our personal opinion and some facts from his biography123.

6. The Package (2012) The Package Trailer

The Package is a direct-to-video action film starring Dolph Lundgren and Steve Austin. It was written by Kolstad and directed by Jesse V. Johnson. The film follows a courier who must deliver a mysterious package to a crime boss while being pursued by rival gangs and corrupt cops. The Package is a generic and forgettable action flick that wastes the talents of its lead actors.

The mob just crossed the wrong man in thriller Shrapnel, available now on Digital Platforms including Google, Apple TV, Sky and Amazon in the UK & Ireland.

Shrapnel blasts onto screens this summer and viewers better take cover. Jason Patric (Sleepers) is a lethal army veteran flipped into combat mode when his daughter is kidnapped by a drug gang, enlisting the help of Cam Gigandet (The Magnificent Seven) to dish out the mayhem.

1) One In The Chamber

It’s hitman vs. hitman in this explosive action-thriller. Dolph Lundgren goes head to head with Oscar® winner Cuba Gooding Jr. The pair star as two super-efficient killing machines, pitted against each other in an out and out mob war! Watch the trailer below.

2) The Expendables

In this monster action franchise Dolph plays mercenary Gunnar Jensen in the all star line up of action greats including Sly Stallone, Jason Statham and Mickey Rourke. ‘But he doesn’t go head to head with these guys’ I hear you cry! Ah, you must be forgetting Dolph’s fight scene with martial arts master Jet Li as Gunnar goes rouge!

Everybody still loves Cuba Gooding Jr., right? The man hasn’t been in a theatrical film in some time, yet he still keeps on pumping out direct-to-dvd stuff like One in the Chamber. He co-stars in William Kaufman’s film alongside Dolph Lundgren, who has been making a respectable comeback in Sylvester Stallone’s Expendables films.

One in the Chamber is a walk in the park for both men, but a sluggish one for the viewers as it contains every plot beat from a dozen other recycled assassin movies that deal with double-crossing and finding innocence in such nasty line of work. It’s a passable film though and that is all you can ask for whenever stars like these align.

Ray Carver (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is a killer. He works for whoever pays him the most and the only regret he ever had was killing a man in front of his daughter.

There are very few gangster movies in recent memory that rise above and beyond what is expected of them. One would cite David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises and Martin Scorsese’s The Departed as proof that the genre can still make the high honor roll; yet lately it seems that the classic gangster flick is content to settle for an easy C grade. One in the Chamber is precisely that kind of film; it is not completely terrible enough to flunk out of theatres but it also isn’t striving for anything special. It is vastly mediocre in every way. As a result, it ends up being more boring than one could think possible; if it were a film so bad that it was scraping the bottom of the barrel, it might at least have been entertaining with that underrated, so-bad-its-good snicker that certain films seem to have. A Separation Listed by many as either their favorite film of 2011 or at least in their top ten, Oscar's Best Foreign Language Film winner A Separation finally comes home to DVD and Blu-ray. Personally, while I liked the movie there was an aspect to it near the end that took a little something away from the story for me. It's a film you should make sure and see and one I'm pretty sure most all of you will enjoy if not love. Buying it on the other hand, doesn't seem like a necessity.

 

The Dictator To my surprise I didn't even have this movie on the schedule until adding it this morning. I'm not sure if that says anything about the film or not, but I probably should have realized considering all the press releases I deleted without opening related to the title over the last several days. The latest in a long line of Cuba Gooding Jr. starring hit-man movies that seem to be inspired by Collateral, (although less so than the previous flick we reviewed, Hit List), this time round Cuba takes on the one man mountain that is Dolph Lundgren. Set in Prague, One in the Chamber sees skilled assassin Ray Carver (Gooding Jr.) hired by gang leader, Bobby Suverov (Leo Gregory), to eliminate his competitiors, the Ivanov brothers. However when Demyan Ivanov (Mandylor) escapes Suverov hires an eccentric Soviet killing machine known as ‘The Wolf’ (Lundgren), to take out the surviving Demyan, as well as Carver. Anchor Bay has announced the Blu-Ray release of One in the Chamber, starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Dolph Lundgren, for August.

Cuba Gooding Jr. hasn’t had the best career as of late, mostly starring in straight-to-dvd B action films, but occasionally he provides us with a performance that reminds us why he was once Oscar material. One in the Chamber isn’t one of those performances (at least I wouldn’t think so), but it does look kind of fun.

The film also stars Dolph Lundgren, who appears to be getting pumped up for The Expendables 2.

Both men look to be fully embracing the cheesy one-liners, while kicking each other’s asses in between. I can’t say that One in the Chamber is going to be any good, but it just might make for an okay Saturday night rental with the buddies.

It was released in DVD format in a few overseas markets (including Australia, where I saw it) before securing a wide release (in DVD and Blu-ray) in its home country America earlier this month.
