AMC’s “Alan Wake” TV adaptation has brought on two new producers following the exit of its previously announced showrunner, Variety has learned exclusively.

Based on the best-selling video game of the same name, the potential series, which is in the very early stages of development at the cable channel, was originally set to have Peter Calloway serve as its showrunner when it was first set up at producer Contradiction Films in 2018. He has now stepped away from “Alan Wake,” which recently landed at AMC, due to conflicting project timelines.

Meanwhile, Jon Jashni, former president of Legendary Entertainment, and Jeff Ludwig, former vice president of scripted film and television production for Ritchie/Wigram Productions, have joined the drama as executive producer and producer, respectively. Jaigantic Studios has acquired Hawthorne Books and Literary Arts. The imprint will target manuscripts with the goal of finding projects potential for film and TV content.

“This is a marriage made in heaven,” said Rhonda Hughes, the publisher at Hawthorne.

The company, which is headquartered in Portland, Ore., has optioned several projects in the past. That includes optioning the rights to Monica Drake’s “Clown Girl” to Kristen Wiig, and optioning Lidia Yuknavitch’s “The Chronology of Water: A Memoir” to Scott Free, which has tapped Kristen Stewart to adapt and direct. Hawthorne has also published Academy Award nominated screenwriter Anthony McCarten’s novel, “Brilliance.” McCarten wrote the scripts for “The Theory of Everything” and “The Two Popes.”

Hughes will remain in her current role and will continue buying literary fiction and creative nonfiction. Initially, Hawthorne will publish eight books per year.

Michael Jai White, whose work as an an actor, director and writer includes “Arrow,” “The Dark Knight,” “Spawn” and “Mortal Kombat: Legacy,” announced the launch of Jaigantic Studios, which will be Connecticut’s first mini-major studio.

White has long wanted to return to his home state to expand the industry with a studio that will provide jobs, professional training and apprenticeships for the local community. Jaigantic will open Studio One in July, which will be operational during construction of the purpose-built studios in New Haven, Conn. It will be used for Jaigantic Studio’s slate of productions that span film, television and other commercial projects.

Located at the midway point between New York City and Boston, Jaigantic Studios will serve as an accessible industry hub for students of Yale University’s drama school. The James Wan-produced reboot of Mortal Kombat is currently gearing up to shoot in Australia, with both writer Greg Russo and director Simon McQuoid set to make their feature debuts on the video game adaptation. With the start of production looming ever closer, the movie has been finalizing its cast in recent weeks, and it’s now been confirmed that another three actors have boarded the project.

Jessica McNamee, best known for appearing in Battle of the Sexes and The Meg, has signed on as Sonya Blade while Josh Lawson, who starred in all five seasons of Showtime comedy House of Lies, will be getting fitted with the signature cybernetic eye of Kano. Lewis Tan, who can currently be seen in Netflix action series Wu Assassins, is also in talks to join the movie in an as-yet-unspecified role.

The Mortal Kombat video game series may have managed to remain relevant since 1992, selling over 35 million units and generating billions in revenue in the process, but the franchise has always proven difficult to get right on the big screen. 1995’s Mortal Kombat is arguably best-known for being a cheesy cult favorite, while sequel Annihilation just isn’t a very good movie at all.

The franchise has since gone on to spend over 20 years stuck in development hell as the rights bounced around between studios, despite Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and Mortal Kombat: Legacy creator Kevin Tancharoen coming agonizingly close to directing the reboot a few years back, before delays eventually saw him quit the project in 2013.

Hulu's PEN15 is making headlines already for its quirky, bluntly honest take on the indignities of middle school. Although the two lead characters, Maya and Anna, are portrayed by adult women (creators Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle), the rest of the teen and tween-aged cast is played by actual young actors. Among the potential breakout stars is Dallas Liu, who's getting plenty of attention but probably doesn't quite look familiar to most viewers.

Liu portrays Shuji Ishii-Peters, Maya's older brother. The young actor made his film debut in the 2010 Japanese-American film Tekken. Dawn of the Dead and Justice League director Zack Snyder is making his big return with another zombie movie, Army of the Dead!

Zack Snyder, the director who first cut his teeth on the zombie genre with 2004's Dawn of the Dead remake, is helming a new undead nightmare for Netflix. The movie is called Army of the Dead, a project that's been in gestation for more than a decade.

Originally conceived as a sequel to Dawn of the Dead by Snyder and screenwriter Joby Harold (Awake), the film is set in a quarantined Las Vegas during a zombie outbreak. Amid the chaos, a father hires a group of mercenaries to help him break into the containment area and find his missing daughter.

Exclusive: WarnerMedia-owned Machinima is expected to become part of Otter Media early next year, as At&T looks to align its related digital assets, sources tell Deadline.

Machinima will retain its brand and online presence, sources say, though Otter will steer business operations and look to apply its expertise in content delivery and audience targeting to grow the gamer lifestyle brand.

Negotiations have been going on for months and some elements have yet to formalized, sources say. It is unclear, for example, whether Machinima Studios — which has produced such original series as Mortal Kombat: Legacy and Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist — would be combined with another Otter Media asset with a similar audience, Rooster Teeth.

Machinima’s content marketing operations may well become integrated with Fullscreen, a one-time multi-channel network that has evolved into an influencer marketing and branded-content agency.

“Knightfall” has been renewed for a second season at History, the cabler announced Monday.

In addition, Aaron Helbing has been brought on board as executive producer and showrunner on Season 2 of the Knights Templar drama, taking over from Dominic Minghella. Helbing was most recently an executive producer and writer on CW’s “The Flash.” His other credits include “Black Sails,” “Spartacus: War of the Damned,” “The Mob Doctor,” and “Mortal Kombat: Legacy.” He is repped by CAA.

The series has also added three new cast members for the second season. “Star Wars” vet Mark Hamill will play the role of Talus, a battle-hardened Knight Templar veteran of the Crusades who survived captivity for ten years in the Holy Land and is tasked with training the new initiates to the Order.

Tom Forbes will appear as Prince Louis, the violent and unpredictable son of King Philip and heir to the throne.

Machinima is teaming up with Greg Russo, who wrote the upcoming Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil reboots for New Line Cinema and Screen Gems, to develop a live-action adaptation of the survival horror video game F.E.A.R. They will also be working on several other projects together that have yet to be announced. Machinima General Manager Russell Arons had this to say in a statement:

As a whole video games based on comic book franchises have met with more critical success than games based on cinematic franchises.  Part of the reasoning behind this is that comic books have a natural affinity with the transition to gaming: bold characters, super powers that can empower the player, the rich environments, and story lines that can be drawn on. All these things can help bring exciting and fun gameplay experiences.

Comic book narratives are something I love; the integration between written narrative and illustrative depth has always fascinated me.  Every time a video game based on a comic book franchise appears, I buy it. Sometimes I've been stung by that, but most times I have a satisfying and immersive gaming experience.

So here are a few of my favourite games in this genre.  

The Punisher

Voliton's The Punisher  is a grisly game where you can torture enemies in order to gain information.

Mark Dacascos' directorial debut, Showdown in Manila, has been picked up by ITN and will be released in U.S. cinemas at the beginning of 2018. For the first time since 1995, we might have a video game movie that lives up to Mortal Kombat’s greatness. How do we know? Because The Rock, duh.

In 1986 Bally Midway introduced us to an arcade game where players take control of gigantic monsters destroying cities, all while trying to survive against military forces. You would win each round by completely destroying the city. Sounds like the perfect basis for an action adventure film. But who is big enough to star in such a monstrous film?

Well no other than The Rock. In the abundance of films that he, or one of his clones, have been filming lately Rampage is set to be the next video game project to attempt to accepted by audiences. Rock plays Davis Okoye, a primatologist who is the head of an anti-poaching unit. He is accompanied by his best friend, an albino silver back named George.

After a subpar outing last week, Saturday Night Live produced what might have been its best episode of Season 43 this time around. A lot of that had to do with host Tiffany Haddish, who brought energy and excitement to each sketch. Fans of predecessor Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor will have had an anxious three-year wait for Middle-earth: Shadow of War. But was the latest addition to the The Lord of the Rings franchise worth this wait? For fans of the previous game, SoW will undoubtedly deliver on more of the same. The real question though is whether SoW has, as a stand-alone game, offered up something fresh.

For most, one of the most atmospheric aspects of SoW will be its delicious, dark tone which (alongside its R-rated status) clearly separates it from the family-friendly reputation developed for the Tlotr franchise in cinemas. The fighting is brutal and gory with options to dispose of your enemies in varying degrees of violence. Two new characters are about to debut in Injustice 2.  While they're from two completely different worlds, they share one thing in common.  Lightning.

Injustice 2 is gearing up for a new wave of heroes, after the release of Starfire, Black Manta, and Red Hood.  The latest additions feature two heroes with an affinity for using lightning.  You already knew about Mortal Kombat's Raiden, but now you'll get to see Black Lightning in action too!

Fear not Mortal Kombat fans, Raiden is indeed a haus.  The gameplay trailer proves that one of the strongest characters in the Mortal Kombat franchise could easily become the strongest in Injustice 2, as well.  His combos mixed with that incredible cinematic super will likely draw a lot of gamers his way.  Meanwhile, I would've liked to have seen more from Black Lightning, but what I did see looks cool enough.

Three new characters are joining the fight in Injustice 2!  Two, you might've already guessed but there's one we never saw coming!  See the full reveal below!

Warner Bros. Interactive has done a nice job of consistently updating Injustice 2 with new brand-new characters.  Not long ago, they added Red Hood, Sub-Zero, and the Op Starfire.  Now, they're planning to add 3 more characters to the fight.  From their silhouettes you might've already guessed Black Manta and Raiden, but you'd have to have the greensight to be have divined that none other than Hellboy would be part of Injustice 2, this September!

While completely unexpected, Hellboy is a welcome addition to the fighting game franchise.  He's been a beloved character in Dark Horse Comics, for some time now, even before the two Ron Pearlman movies.  With his amusing humor and, no doubt, hard-hitting moveset, it'll be no surprise if he's one of the more frequently used new characters.

It’s not hard to see why Mortal Kombat turned into one of the biggest pop-culture phenomena of the ’90s. It wasn’t the first game with gratuitous gore, but none of its bloody predecessors had the marketing dollars, strategic timing, or eye-catching panache of Midway’s infamous fighter. Landing one year after Street Fighter II ushered in a second wind for arcades, Mortal Kombat borrowed that game’s archetypal formula but swapped the cartoonish characters for digitized models of real actors, all of whom sprayed blood and got torn to bits during the iconic Fatality sequences. It was edgy and different and stuffed with arcane secrets (a new one was just discovered last year) that kept players plunking down quarters, and by the time the console versions launched on “Mortal Monday” in September 1993, Mk fever was so hot that the publisher expected to sell at least 2 million ...

Not even two weeks since his teaser heavy appearance at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this month, the Injustice 2 director and figurehead of developer NetherRealm Studios is back at it again, having posted a peculiar image on Twitter that looks to be hinting at yet another new roster addition. The picture in question, which you can see for yourselves below, appears to show an armor-clad individual hunched over on the ground, accompanied with the equally mysterious caption of a face looking skyward.

AtGames announced today that we will be seeing the release of the Atari Flashback 8 Gold and the Sega Genesis Flashback consoles later this year.

Hailing from a neighboring universe, these versions of Superman, Batman, Harley Quinn and others have captivated fans everywhere, especially those who dig the “Elseworlds” stuff.
