Denis Villeneuve's 2017 sci-fi film "Blade Runner 2049" is a worthy follow-up to Ridley Scott's 1982 flick "Blade Runner." Both presented unique and beautifully photographed sci-fi landscapes that were unique to the genre, and gorgeous to behold. They were the kinds of sci-fi landscapes that college-aged cineastes love to use as their laptop wallpapers. Additionally, both "Blade Runners" contained a few notably punchy action setpieces nestled in between steamroller-paced scenes of sorrowful contemplation. Also, both were infused with the same flavor of navel-gazing angst that feels incredibly profound when you're 16. Villeneuve's film outstripped Scott's in that it was a full 46 minutes longer.
"Blade Runner 2049" was Villenueve's ninth feature film as a director, having established his aesthetic in Canada with films like "Polytechnique" and "Incendies," and who became an international superstar with the success of films like "Prisoners" and "Sicario." Cinematographer and director Warwick Thornton scored top honors Saturday at the Camerimage cinematography film festival for his magical tale of an aboriginal youth, “The New Boy,” which film jurors called a distinctive “portrait of an extinguished spirituality.”
Thornton, in accepting the Golden Frog, said he had been so moved by the cinematography work onscreen at the fest, a top global event for directors of photography, he’d been “tearing for a week.”
Ed Lachman, director of photography for Pablo Larrain’s horror fantasy “El Conde,” inspired by the life of Chilean tyrant Augusto Pinochet, won the Silver Frog for what the jury called “cinematic high poetry,” while the Bronze Frog and Audience Award went to cinematographer Robbie Ryan for his Gothic dream-like imagery in Emma Stone-starrer “Poor Things,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.

The New Boy — the story of a young Aboriginal Australian orphan boy that was written, directed and lensed by Warwick Thornton — collected the Golden Frog in the main competition of the 31st EnergaCamerimage international cinematography film festival, which closed Saturday night in Torún, Poland.
Cinematographer Ed Lachman received the Silver Frog for Pablo Larraín’s El Conde, which positions Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet as a vampire. Robbie Ryan’s lensing of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, the story of a young woman (Emma Stone) brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist, claimed the Bronze Frog as well as the Audience Award. Two of the UK’s top comedy stars, Richard Ayoade and Jonathan Ross, have received backlash on social media after reviewing The It Crowd writer Graham Linehan’s memoir.
Irish scribe Linehan has gone from the writer of much-loved Channel 4 comedies The It Crowd, Father Ted and Black Books to an outspoken anti-transgender activist in recent years, leading many in the UK and Ireland to boycott him.
His book, Tough Crowd, has gone on pre-sale on Amazon this week. Its reviews section displays favorable quotes from talk show host and writer Ross and actor-director Ayoade, who starred in The It Crowd between 2006 and 2013. Other advocates include author John Boyne, anti-trans journalist Helen Joyce, comic Simon Evans and British TV director Lissa Evans.
Ross was quoted saying the book is “one of the most compelling and unflinchingly honest memoirs I’ve read in many years. It’s also the funniest,...

Mia Wasikowska’s first project in The States was the HBO series In Treatment. She was just 16 years old, but if you watched it then, you were probably in awe, like me, marveling at this seemingly fully formed acting artist, performing, with nuance and subtlety, well beyond her years. She continued to wow us with stellar work in Jane Eyre, Madame Bovary, Alice In Wonderland, Stoker, The Double, Tracks, Damsel and Bergman Island, to name a few. Her latest is an absolutely beautiful film called Blueback. In this woefully brief episode, she talks about the underwater acting she had to do […]

Film markets are a very interesting part of the industry. While these markets often try and promote movies that end up going nowhere, there are always a few projects announced that we hope we get to see in the future. With the European Film Market currently underway, we've been introduced to one such project, and this one may have an all-star lineup of talent attached to it.
Deadline exclusively reported that one of EFM's buzziest reveals is that of "The Semplica Girl Diaries," a feature adapted from the 2012 short story by George Saunders. Richard Ayoade is currently slated to adapt the story, marking his long-awaited return to the director's chair after 2013's criminally underappreciated "The Double." However, this is far from the most interesting aspect of this new production package. While details are still coming together as of this article's publication, here is what we can currently gather about "The Semplica Girl Diaries.

Although he delivered quite a memorable performance as a director in Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir series, it’s been a decade since Richard Ayoade actually last directed a film. Following 2010’s Submarine and 2013’s The Double, he’s now finally returning with a new feature and the first details have been unveiled.
Deadline reports Ayoade will direct, star in, and has co-written with George Saunders an adaptation of his New Yorker short The Semplica Girl Diaries. Also starring Ayoade’s wife Lydia Fox, with Ben Stiller, Jesse Eisenberg, and Sally Hawkins in talks to join the ensemble, the 2012 short story follows a suburban father who buys an elite status symbol outdoor decoration called Semplica Girls. It’s then revealed these “decorations” are actually poor young women from other countries.
See the full synopsis below for the project that will be sold by Cornerstone Films at EFM.

British comedian, writer, actor and filmmaker Richard Ayoade looks to have attracted an A-list lineup for his third feature in the director’s chair.
According to sources, Ben Stiller, Jesse Eisenberg and Sally Hawkins are all in negotiations to star in dystopian comedy The Semplica Girl Diaries, which Ayoade has adapted from George Saunders’ short story of the same name alongside the Booker Prize-winning American author.
First published in 2012, the story follows a suburban father of three who keeps a diary in which he alludes to a status-symbol outdoor decoration called Semplica Girls. When he eventually buys one for his teenage daughter, it’s revealed that these girls are actually poor young women from countries such as Laos and Cambodia who have sold themselves as garden ornaments.
Cornerstone is handling international sales on the project and is believed to be introducing it to buyers at the European Film Market.

Time is running out to stream films like “Lincoln,” “The Fisher King” and “He Got Game” on HBO Max. Below is the complete list of everything leaving HBO and HBO Max in January 2022, which includes some classic “Planet of the Apes” films, Ben Affleck’s Oscar-winning “Argo” and 1988’s “Married to the Mob,” among others. Most of these titles leave the streaming service on Jan. 31, but departing HBO and HBO Max on Jan. 20 is a behind-the-scenes look at Guillermo del Toro’s new film “Nightmare Alley,” which is exclusively in theaters now.
If you’re looking for noteworthy titles to add to your watchlist before they depart, “Lincoln” is one of Steven Spielberg’s best, “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” is a handsome and nail-biting spy thriller and “The Fisher King” is a great two-hander with Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams.

If you've ever had a doppelgänger, you know how simultaneously frustrating and also hilarious it can make life. People will accuse you of being in places you've never been, friends will sheepishly tell you stories about time they thought they saw you on the street, it's a wild situation. Dickens, Dostoevsky and probably a hundred other artists with 'D' last names have explored the phenomenon, and while it's a rich well for any artist to draw from, we truly can't stop laughing at Ryan Reynolds' pizza-packed doppelgänger confession. Forget about "The Double," we have a new delightfully mundane and yet weirdly fun story.

Daisy May Cooper, the star of hit BBC comedy “This Country,” is to play a suspected witch being escorted to trial in 17th-century England in new BBC Two comedy series “The Witchfinder.”
Cooper will star alongside actor and comedian Tim Key, who plays a failing witch hunter transporting her to a trial that could change his fortunes forever. But his captive is the worst possible travel companion: an inquisitive, uncouth woman whose ability to prick his pomposity and ask uncomfortable questions turns a straightforward journey into a life-changing ordeal.
Set in 1647, in the middle of the English Civil War, “The Witchfinder” is created by Neil and Rob Gibbons, the writers and directors of Steve Coogan-starring “This Time With Alan Partridge.”
The six-part series is produced by Coogan’s production company, Baby Cow, whose credits include “The Trip,” starring Coogan and Rob Brydon, as well as features “Alpha Papa” and “Philomena.

Jesse Eisenberg excels at playing jittery, insecure young men, but he’ll never pursue those roles as a punchline. “People describe me as playing characters that are shy or introverted,” he said during a recent lunch in Chelsea. “These are things that are also natural to me as a person. I grew up introverted and shy in a smart family, and so when I read scripts that commodify and mock that…” He trailed off and grinned. “Is ‘kryptonite’ the right word?”
It was an ironic choice for the guy who played Lex Luthor in “Batman v. Superman,” a role that Eisenberg said he tackled for the villain’s longstanding pop-culture pedigree. It was better than some of the other paycheck gigs sent his way. “There was a movie that I heard was being developed at a major studio, which was about a guy who comes up with a math equation to make the perfect girlfriend,...

While he might be best known for his Oscar-nominated performance as Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, Jesse Eisenberg’s preternatural ability for making unique characterization choices has won him roles in wildly original films, both indie and studio, such as The End of the Tour, Adventureland, Holy Rollers, American Ultra, Zombieland, and two of my favorites, The Squid and the Whale and The Double. The Get Out writer-director splices sociopolitical satire with clever, full-blooded chills
“We’re Americans.” That phrase, delivered in a deathless, deadpan drawl, echoes through the twists and turns of a movie whose very title slyly evokes the common abbreviation for United States. Having taken a scalpel to the covert racism of gliberal America in Get Out, writer-director Jordan Peele turns his gaze inward for this rip-roaring follow-up, which is fearsomely entertaining, consistently thought-provoking and occasionally bloody scary. A Twilight Zone mashup of Dostoevsky’s The Double and Jack Finney’s The Body Snatchers, spiced up once again by a wit reminiscent of vintage Ira Levin, it’s a modern fable that locates our anxieties about outsiders in a guilty fear of ourselves. The result plays like a mirror-image riposte to the French-Romanian home-invasion horror Ils (Them), suggesting that, contrary to Sartre, hell is not other people; it is us.

Jesse Eisenberg’s ability to hover inside a bundle of nerves has been the driving force behind his brand since “The Squid and the Whale,” but with few exceptions, his movies usually operate at a lower register. The occasional examples include Richard Ayaode’s Kafkaesque “The Double” and the under-seen surrealist romp “The Living Wake,” both of which deploy Eisenberg’s inscrutable features as narrative device. Now comes “The Art of Self-Defense,” which unleashes the actor in a sinister dark comedy as a karate-obsessed loser on the brink of losing his mind, and it’s about time the actor gave his wildest performance ever.

Caniba (Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel)
As part of the groundbreaking Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab, Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel have established themselves at the forefront of modern documentary filmmaking, most notably with their landmark 2012 film Leviathan. In their second collaboration this year (after somniloquies, which premiered at Berlin), the two seem to be engaging with a more typical documentary subject, though the form of Caniba remains to be seen.

Dead Ringer By Charles Borkuis (Blazevox Books, 2017)
The idea of the doppleganger, identity theft and mix up of characters has always played a big part in literature since early on. The piece that initially always comes to mind is Dostoyevsky's "The Double."
In Charles Borkhuis new book of poetry Dead Ringer, we get just that same awkward feeling of mixed and misplaced identity. It is fraught with biting satire, fierce statements of who we are and might or might not be, "that tiny voice again warbling help me, help me" while we/he wander(s) about the chaotic landscape with our/his "identity as the creation of others" as if "words and things were cut from the same suit." As "a lifetime of loose strings come to dance," "nodding in mirror-rhythm," and we never knowing "who's speaking and who's an echo." Borkhuis makes us realize that identity is never a sure thing,...

Given that he doesn’t necessarily look or act like a traditional idea of a leading man, the enduring stardom of Jesse Eisenberg is a pleasing thing. It’s now 15 years since we first saw him on screen, in Dylan Kidd’s “Roger Dodger,” and he’s consistently made strong choices that have kept him on the A-list, whether it’s working with acclaimed auteurs like Woody Allen, Noah Baumbach and David Fincher, excelling in smaller indies like Kelly Reichardt’s “Night Moves,” Richard Ayoade’s “The Double” or James Ponsoldt’s “The End Of The Tour,” or selling out while holding onto his credibility in “Now You See Me” or “Zombieland” (though we’ll skip over ‘Batman v Superman‘).

The Crystal Maze: first official picture
Here it is, the first official look at presenter Richard Ayoade in some posh togs for the revived series of The Crystal Maze, due to arrive on Channel 4 this June.
Feast your eyes on this:
Using Den of Geek's renowned fashion nous, we can tell you that Mr Ayoade is sporting a hot raspberry corduroy suit which has been paired with a natty white lace-up ankle boot and an entomologically themed shirt. With a collar. He's probably wearing socks too, but you'll have to imagine those. Stripes, maybe?
You may also notice that Ayoade is standing in front of the new-look Crystal Dome with fancy light displays running around its facets that are almost as snazzy as his outfit. Magic.
The Crystal Maze will return for a new series
It's official. The Crystal Maze will be returning to Channel 4 for a full, twenty-episode series including a handful of charity celebrity specials .
The series was commissioned following the overwhelmingly positive response to last year's Stand Up To Cancer celebrity edition (and no doubt, the ongoing success of the ace Crystal Maze Experience in London and soon, Manchester).
Presenting this time around will be new Maze Master Richard Ayoade, confirmed to be taking over from Stephen Merchant. Well-loved for Gadget Man, The It Crowd, The Mighty Boosh and directing feature films The Double and Submarine, Ayoade is a mighty fine choice.
The new series will be filmed at a purpose-built 30,000 square foot maze in Bristol created by the original Crystal Maze designer James Dillon.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question:
Last Friday saw the release of Garth Davis’ “Lion,” the musical score for which is the gorgeous result of a collaboration between two giants of the neo-classical movement, Dustin O’Halloran and Hauschka. It’s just the latest indication that we’re living in a fascinating, vibrant time for movie music, and December boasts a number of films that will only add more fuel to that fire. With that in mind, we asked our panel of critics to name their favorite film score of the 21st Century.

Kubrick's early anti-war classic stars Kirk Douglas as a French Colonel facing a court martial for cowardice after disobeying his superiors. This new release also includes an audio commentary from film scholar Adrian Martin and video interviews with Kubrick scholar Peter Kramer and filmmaker Richard Ayoade (Submarine, The Double). In the French front lines of World War I, after giving the order for an impossible and disastrous mission to capture a nearby stronghold, the upper ranks move to save face by having three randomly selected soldiers held and tried for cowardice under pain...

After Instagram announced it was adopting 60-second videos earlier this year, IndieWire wondered how filmmakers and artists would use the platform and questioned whether or not it could become a space for digital short films. While the juries still out, it appears Radiohead is taking full advantage of the app by releasing a series of short film vignettes directly on their Instagram page. Earlier this month, the band partnered with “The Double” director Richard Ayoade, and now they’ve gotten “The Lobster” director Yorgos Lanthimos to helm the latest one, featuring the song “Identikit” off their new album.

After a three-year gap, acclaimed director Clio Barnard (The Arbor, The Selfish Giant) is currently in the middle of shooting her third feature, Dark River, and with a new report from Film4 comes more updates about the film. The story follows Alice (Ruth Wilson) who, after 15-years, returns to her home village to claim tenancy over her now-passed father’s home. However, her brother (Mark Stanley), rugged from years of tending their farm, isn’t so keen on the idea. Their clash causes old trauma to surface for Alice, threatening both their lives in the process.
Barnard is re-teaming with multiple behind-the-scenes collaborators including production designer Helen Scott, who worked on both of Barnard’s previous features, and editor Nick Fenton (The Double, Submarine). Until more news breaks, watch a trailer for Barnard’s previous acclaimed drama, The Selfish Giant, following the official synopsis of Dark River, which also stars Sean Bean.

This week in Radiohead’s weekly Friday vignettes, the band released a short video of their song “Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor Rich Man Poor Man Beggar Man Thief.” (Whew, try saying that ten times fast.) The song is off their ninth studio album, “A Moon Shaped Pool,” and is the sixth video in a series of interpretations for each track.
The clip for “Tinker Tailer” is directed by English actor and writer Richard Ayoade, known for his role as Maurice Moss in “The It Crowd.” The eerie video is shot from the point of view of a driver at night, who runs into a group of strange people all dressed in black and carrying briefcases. As they look left and right and huddle up, an explosion is seen in the distance. Then a masked person comes out from the driver’s left view.

25. Jurassic World
Director Colin Trevorrow was amongst those who expressed disappointment at this one particular promo for Jurassic World. In it, we see Chris Pratt riding on his motorbike, alongside velcoraptors that surprisingly don't appear to be eating him. Presented out of context, the scene just looked a little daft. But...

Having burst onto the scene in Submarine, and since starred in the likes of The Double, while even directing himself, in the recent feature Just Jim – it’s evident that the talented Craig Roberts has an inclination for dark, almost surrealist cinema – and that is a trend he’s continued in his latest picture, Kill Your

Craig Roberts’s directorial debut mixes Dostoevskian paranoia and cracked humour with impressive confidence
There’s more than a hint of Richard Ayoade in Craig Roberts’s darkly comic directorial debut. Both the teen awkwardness of Submarine (in which Roberts memorably starred) and the Dostoevskian paranoia of The Double are here present and correct. Working from his own script, Roberts plays the titular Jim, a dorky misfit whose life is transformed by the arrival of new neighbour Dean (Emile Hirsch), who teaches Jim to be a rebel. Trips to a rat-pit cinema endlessly repeating the same mock-noir hint that Dean may be partly a Fight Club-style figment of Jim’s cineliterate imagination, although the film’s surreal threads are left deliberately open-ended. With his deadpan Keaton-esque demeanour, Roberts is already a singular screen presence, and here acquits himself confidently behind the camera, handling the film’s shifting tones with nicely cracked off-kilter humour.

To salute the incoming arrival of American Ultra, we salute some underrated treats from Jesse Eisenberg's back catalogue...
When Jesse Eisenberg was announced as Lex Luthor in Batman Vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice, it made instant sense. Not because he was bald, not because he looks like or Gene Hackman or anything, but just because he’s one of those actors whose screen presence is so perfectly formed. You know exactly what they’re going for with their Luthor, just by Eisenberg’s name. It’s Mark Zuckerberg vs Superman, the supergod vs the awkward genius.
But that’s not the only big action movie he’s got coming up. First he’s going to be in American Ultra, a unique stoner/sci-fi mash-up where he stars alongside Kristen Stewart (it's released in the UK on September 4th). Eisenberg first really burst into our consciousness in 2009 and 2010, where...
