Recent years have seen a resurgance in the horror anthology, from the likes of V/H/S to The ABC’s of Death – both of which have inspired many a filmmaker to create their own anthology, to vary degrees of success. The latest to join the ranks is Zombieworld, a collection of 11 shorts, which was put together by Ruthless Pictures in association with horror website Dread Central. This film however has more in common with the “classic” 80s anthology film Groove Tube as TV newsreader Marvin Gloatt (played by the awesome Bill Oberst Jr.) – himself slowly turning into one of the undead...

Following up on my previous article, “Watch 15 Great Horror Short Films,” which received a very positive response, I’ve researched and collected 13 more superb horror short films. As with the first article, I limited the choices to stand-alone live-action horror short films not produced for an anthology film and the selections were narrowed down by availability.

In further keeping with the criteria of the first article, animated horror short films and horror-comedy short films were excluded from consideration as both of these categories would make good subjects for their own individual articles. Sorry, Brutal Relax and Fist of Jesus fans.

It should also be noted that a number of highly regarded horror shorts readers might clamor to see in an article like this such as Ryan Haysom’s Yellow continue their long festival runs and have not been posted for online viewing and were therefore not considered for this piece.

Hitting its 8th year, the annual South African HorrorFest film festival is coming up quickly (it runs 24 Oct-2 Nov), and the full lineup and event schedule have been announced. It's one of the biggest we've ever seen!

Creeping its way towards lighting up Halloween season, the ever-expanding South African Horrorfest celebrates its 8th anniversary in Cape Town. To qualify as a 'short', a film must be longer than one minute and shorter than fifteen. Now, with the standard feature running at around 90 minutes long, one could be forgiven for wondering how a 15 minute presentation could produce the same quality, depth and enjoyment as its feature-length brethren. Well, as Brutal Relax shows, it's more than possible, delivering an outrageously entertaining experience for all.

The recent production of talented directors Adrián Cardona, Rafa Dengrá and David Muñoz, Brutal Relax follows Mr Olivares, a stressed individual in desperate need of a vacation. However, in a twist worthy of Shyamalan himself, our poor protagonist soon finds himself surrounded by a supernatural outbreak; one that threatens both his existence and, most importantly, his relaxation.

About three weeks ago, I wrote an article announcing Shadowlocked's involvement in this year's Telluride Horror Show and my role as 'Master Host'. Some of you have been wondering what films will be on tap for those in attendance, and lemme tell ya, there are some real doozies. Whether their horror tastes lie with the moody and atmospheric or with over the top fountains of gore, fright fans will find that the Horror Show has something for everyone this year.

Back by popular demand is the extremely popular horror/comedy Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, one of last year's Horror Show crown jewels returning for a repeat performance. Also on tap is The Tunnel, an Australian horror in the 'found footage' genre. Director Carlo Ledesma and producers Enzo Tedeschi and Julian Harvey will be in attendance. Making their United States debuts are shoot-o-rama The Scarlet Worm and tournament-style gorefest Monster Brawl.

Though Fantastic Fest still has three days left packed with movies, the best of the best have been revealed. Monday night, the awards for the best films, actors, writers and directors of the festival were announced in several different categories. Some of the winners are films I've already reviewed and loved. The Audience Award went to A Boy and His Samurai by Yoshihiro Nakamura [1], the Amd Dell Next Wave Spotlight Competition winner was Bullhead directed by Michael R. Well, after five days of rigorous screenings, and countless sleepless nights, the festival’s 70+ films and shorts have been narrowed down to but a select few which have been chosen as winners for this year’s Fantastic Fest Awards!

Winning a Fantastic Fest award not only means your work has a better shot of surviving past the festival, but it also means that you as a filmmaker, are to be faced with a somewhat serious decision. Just because you’ve won an award, doesn’t necessarily mean you get to keep it. A time honored festival tradition dictates that possession of the award is ultimately dependent on your ability to chug a beer from said award, and for big winners like Simon Barrett who penned story for the film You’re Next (winner of 4 awards), this means quite a few pints! Hollywoodnews.com: “You’re Next,” Adam Wingard’s horror thriller about a family terrorized my masked intruders, on the Best Picture award at this year’s Fantastic Fest, which hosted thousands of genre-film fans in Austin, Texas.

The year’s fest opened with a screening of Tom Six’s “Human Centipede” sequel, and featured a regional premiere of Morgan Spurlock’s Comic-Con documentary, “A Fan’s Hope.”

Both “Next” and “Hope” played the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month before stopping in Austin. “Next” practically swept the Horror category at the festival, grabbing Director for Wingard, Best Screenplay for Simon Barrett, and Best Actress for Sharni Vinson. Sean Harris, meanwhile, earned Best Actor for “A Lonely Place To Die.”

While Emmett and I will spend the next few days catching up on posting our reviews from Fantastic Fest, tonight Alamo Drafthouse owner and Fantastic Fest Creative Director Tim League announced the 2011 Fantastic Award winners. It’s great to see Adam Wingard’s You’re Next take home best film and best director in the category of horror as well as Milocrorze: A Love Story (a move that made my list of best film of the year so far) take home best feature in the category of Fantastic.

Acquired by Lionsgate and pulled from all but one of its screenings at the festival, the crowd-pleasing horror-comedy "You're Next" still killed at the Fantastic Fest 2011 Awards. The story of a couple trapped in a remote house by crazed animal-mask-wearing killers won four awards: Best Horror Feature, Best Director (Adam Wingard), Best Screenplay (Simon Barrett), and Best Actress (Sharni Vinson). Unofficially, it also won my award for Best Defacement of the Alamo Drafthouse. Look for this one from Lionsgate, probably sometime late in 2012.

The other big winner of the night was "Bullhead," which made a huge splash in the Amd & Dell Next Wave Spotlight Competition devoted to emerging filmmakers. The dark character study of a steroid-taking Mafia enforcer won Best Picture, Best Director (Michael R. Roskam), and Best Actor (Matthias Schoenaerts). According to IMDb, the film does not yet have a Us distributor.

Choosing the winners in any of the categories couldn't be easy.

The Maelstrom International Fantastic Film Festival (Mifff), a three day international showcase of genre films, is thrilled to announce its final lineup and schedule for its third annual event.

The festival is taking place September 16th-18th, 2011 in Seattle, Washington on the campus of Seattle Center. Siff Cinema at McCaw Hall will once again be the center of genre film mania in the Pacific Northwest for filmmakers and fans alike.

Mifff’s third year will debut 5 feature films and over 40 short films from 12 countries across the globe. Over 10 of the films will be North American Premiere’s while there’s 30 films that will be making either their Northwest or Seattle Premiere. Information about the films can be accessed at the Mifff website.

Several filmmakers will be in attendance.

Tickets are available in advance online. An entire festival pass can be purchased for $40. Single day passes for Saturday and Sunday are available at $25 per day.

When it comes to selecting which movies you are going to put in your film festival, some organizers are better than others. Judging by the announcement of first wave of films to be screened at the Second Annual Telluride Film Festival in Telluride, Colorado, these guys know their shit!

With a schedule that will boast over 20 features and 20 shorts, this is just the beginning, but I'm impressed already…Chillerama, Helldriver, a killer baseball pitcher film And Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Yeah, I'm impressed.

And not only are you getting a killer film line-up, Telluride itself is amazing! A former silver mining town set in a box canyon in southwest Colorado, it's the perfect Shining-esque, Overlook Hotel setting for a horror film festival. To-Hell-You-Ride, Colorado. Oh yeah!

I know it's a full schedule when the ol' carpel tunnel syndrome starts acting up while I write and format the film list.

The Telluride Horror Show – a 3 day horror film festival in Telluride, Colorado – returns for its second edition on October 14-16, 2011. The first batch of films has been announced, but this is just a teaser so fear not, horror fans! The complete festival program will include 20+ feature films and 20+ shorts. The Telluride Horror Show takes place at the legendary Sheridan Opera House and Nugget Theatre, both located on Telluride’s historic main street.

The complete list of short films screening at Fantastic Fest has been announced. Unfortunatly as with most short films, there isn’t too much known about many of these. I know Infernal Nuns recieved a lot of praise from various blogs after it screened at Fantasia and Cop Hard is based on the popular web series, but apart from that, I’m pretty much in the dark. What I do know is that sometimes the short films are more rewarding than some features. Remember folks, some of these directors may go on to do some very big things in the near future, so try and check them out. Here is the press release.

Anybody can tell a good tale, spin a quality yarn so to speak, if given an hour and a half. But to accomplish that same feat in 15 minutes or so, now that's doing something. And Fantastic Fest has announced the lineup of 50 films doing just that for this year's program.

The Fantastic Fest shorts will be presented during the festival, which runs September 22-29 in Austin, Texas. With running times as long as thirty minutes and a short as two, and coming from over a dozen countries, the films look as diverse as they will be entertaining. Take a gander at the huge list complied below, and for those of you lucky enough to be in the great state of Texas during the fest, we envy you.
