Paris-based TeamTO – one of Europe’s leading kids’ entertainment companies – is investing in new IP projects to broaden its global reach, while pioneering green production techniques that have set the standard for the French animation sector.

The company, with a capacity of up to 700 staff, has developed a high-end production pipeline, primarily catering to kids animation series, such as the Emmy-nominated “Angelo Rules,” “Jade Armor” and “Behind the Beats,” as well as servicing third-party series, ranging from Hasbro’s “Kiya & the Kimoja Heroes” to Netflix hit “The Creature Cases,” recently nominated for an Annie award and a Kidscreen award.

Samantha Weinstein, the Canadian actress and voiceover artist who played Heather in the 2013 remake of “Carrie,” has died of a rare form of ovarian cancer, her family announced on Instagram. She was 28.

“Sam died on May 14th at 11:25 am surrounded by her loved ones at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto,” read the family’s obit. “After two and a half years of cancer treatment, and a lifetime of jet setting around the world, voicing a plethora of cartoon animals, making music, and knowing more about life than most people ever will, she is off on her next adventure.”

She documented her last few years on Instagram, including her wedding in October, which she called “the best day of my life… 20 months, 10 rounds of chemo, and a lifetime’s worth of memories later, here we are.”

Gordon Pinsent, a prolific Canadian actor who gained international recognition in 2006 for his performance alongside Julie Christie in Sarah Polley’s drama “Away From Her,” died Saturday. He was 92 years old.

Pinsent’s death was confirmed to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation through a statement released by his family. No further details about his death are available at this time.

“Gordon Pinsent’s daughters, Leah and Beverly, and his son, Barry, would like to announce the passing of their father peacefully in sleep today with his family at his side,” reads a note written on behalf of Pinsent’s family by his son-in-law, Peter Keleghan. “Gordon passionately loved this country and its people, purpose and culture to his last breath.”

I suppose that the tale of an elegant elephant king and his mischievous grandson can be quite entertaining when one is a small child and too young to understand, and thus be made uncomfortable by, the weird, pro-colonialist undertones of the original Babar stories. (An elephant goes to the big city and brings monarchy and green suits back to the jungle!) Such is the premise of Babar and the Adventures of Badou: Gone Wild. The DVD collects eight episodes of the French-Canadian 3D animated series, which airs on Disney Jr. in the United States. It stars Badou, the eight-year-old grandson of King Babar, and chronicles the various misadventures he gets into with his diverse menagerie of pals.

Kin Community has a new, children-themed addition to its roster of creative talent. The Santa Monica-based multi-channel network has partnered with Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana to manage the animation company’s YouTube channel. Under the deal, Kin will aim to optimize Nelvana’s YouTube content, expand its global reach beyond its home country of Canada, and develop engagement with many of its well-known brands (like The Berenstain Bears, Max & Ruby, and Babar and the Adventures of Badou). Actor Leslie “Les” M. Carlson, who starred in four David Cronenberg films including Videodrome during his 38-year career in film, television, and the stage, died May 3 after a battle with cancer at his Toronto home, under hospice care. He was 81. South Dakota-born Carlson began his screen career in the 1970s, with turns in films including 1974′s Deranged and the sorority slasher classic Black Christmas. Cronenberg cast him as Spectacular Optical Corporation head Barry Convex in 1983 sci-fi horror Videodrome, for which Carlson earned a Genie Award nomination. He’d go on to act in three more Cronenberg films: The Dead Zone, The Fly, and 2000′s Toronto Film Festival short Camera. Carlson’s credits also include films High-Ballin’, A Christmas Story, Rolling Vengeance, and K2, as well as TV appearances on 21 Jump Street, The X-Files, Highlander, Babar and the Adventures of Badou, Rookie Blue, and a recurring run on Disney’s Road To Avonlea.
