Star Trek: Voyager debuted 30 years ago this month, and it’s a kick to look back at the show’s earliest days. For example, the Voyager cast are the old-timers now, as Enterprise, Discovery, Strange New Worlds, Prodigy, Lower Decks, several feature films, and now Section 31 have all followed. But, when Voyager started, “typecasting” was still very much a thing, the notion being that acting in a Star Trek production could lead to trouble landing subsequent roles after a series ended because the public and entertainment industry so strongly associated an actor with their Star Trek role. More than just about anyone other than Patrick Stewart, Voyager star Kate Mulgrew has avoided that fate.

Most know Karen Gillan as Nebula in the MCU or from the newer Jumanji films. Or if you’re a weirdo like me you remember her from her great work in the third season of Ntsf:sd:suv. As her time as Nebula draws to a close, she’s been popping up in some really interesting Indie work. While her role was brief, she had quite the screen presence in last year’s Next Exit. And I’m not sure if you’re aware but Russell Crowe has been absolutely killing it lately. So I was very excited to see Gillan and Crowe team up for a new crime thriller.
Sleeping Dogs takes the viewer on a very interesting journey of discovery. Gillan’s Laura Baines is quite layered and allows a little more grey area.

Swiss Army Man, which hits theaters this Friday, has been making waves with its already-infamous title as the odd, farting corpse drama that shook and divided Sundance this year. Following a hopeless man (Paul Dano) stranded on a deserted island who finds a companion in a talking corpse (Daniel Radcliffe). One can see our review here. The minds behind the madness are the directing duo Daniels — Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, hence the name — and while this marks their feature debut, the pair have been working together for years.
Beginning in 2010, the two created a Vimeo and uploaded the official video for The Hundred in the Hands’ song “Pigeons.” From there, they spent the next five years crafting an assortment of commercials, music videos, skits, and short films — all seemingly working towards the distillation and realization of their collective cinematic voice with Swiss Army Man. Their most recent short, Interesting Ball,...

Lisa Kudrow in The Comeback, which she announced will be returning for a third season.
John Singleton is poised to be the next filmmaker to make the leap to television, as FX has picked up the pilot for Snowfall, a show co-created by Singleton. The press release had this summary of the series.
Los Angeles 1981. A storm is coming and its name is cocaine. Snowfall is a one-hour drama set against the infancy of the crack cocaine epidemic and its ultimate radical impact on the culture as we know it. The story follows three characters on a violent collision course: Franklin Saint, young street entrepreneur on a quest for power; Gustavo Zapata, a Mexican wrestler turned gangster in search of his American dream; and Logan Miller, a prominent family’s “black sheep” desperate to escape his father’s shadow.
Singleton will also direct the pilot.

‘Let's Be Cops’ Review: Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans, Jr. Have Too Few Good Jokes in Their Holsters
It would be unfair to cite “Let's Be Cops” for being completely unfunny, but the movie at least deserves a warning for carrying so little actual humor over the course of its running time. A mild chuckle every five minutes or so doesn't justify the predictable slog of this mistaken-identity farce. If nothing else, it's an object example of the importance of writing. The cast is loaded with people who have been hilarious elsewhere — Damon Wayans, Jr. (of the brilliant, gone-too-soon “Happy Endings”), Jake Johnson (“Drinking Buddies”), Rob Riggle (“Ntsf:sd:suv::”), and Keegan-Michael Key (“Key & Peele”), to name just...

There was a certain point in history, somewhere between The Simpsons and Daria, when TV animation ceased to be the sole provenance of kids drooling over their morning bowls of Lucky Charms. These days, cartoons for grown-ups are not only ubiquitous, but hilariously twisted and high-quality to boot — and that's due in large part to a phenomenon called Adult Swim. What began as a freaky little block of late-night programming has evolved into a vast, even-freakier universe of animated and live-action series with a sardonic, absurdist sense of humor that's...

Netflix isn’t quite batting 1,000 with its original shows, but it’s doing far better than I bet they dared to hope, and Orange is the New Black is a big part of the reason. Following the announcement of the date the second season will be available, now you can also mark your calendar for the release of the first season on Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital. May 13th is the date (with digital outlets getting a week head start on the 6th), which gives you a couple of weeks to binge the season before… well, before you have to sign up for Netflix, I guess. Or, you could do that now, and have more time to watch.
Well, look, not everyone is going to sign up for Netflix, and those people want to watch the show everyone is talking about too. More importantly, the release comes with a lot of bonuses.

Doctor Who‘s Karen Gillan has been cast as the lead in ABC/Warner Bros. TV single-camera comedy pilot Selfie. Julie Anne Robinson is set to direct the pilot from Suburgatory creator/executive producer Emily Kapnek. It centers on Eliza Dooley (Gillan), a self-obsessed, twentysomething who is more concerned with “likes” than being liked. After suffering a very public and humiliating breakup, she becomes the subject of a viral video and suddenly has more social media “followers” than she ever imagined — but for all the wrong reasons. She enlists the help of a marketing expert at her company to help repair her tarnished image. Scotland native Gillan, best known for her role as Amy Pond on the long-running British sci-fi drama Doctor Who, recently recurred on the Adult Swim comedy Ntsf:sd:suv. "Ntsf:sd:suv::" is about to take viewers somewhere they've never been on the Adult Swim show: the United Kingdom. Well, they sort of do, anyway. The series' half-hour event episode, titled "U-ko'ed," was filmed in London despite the fact the episode is supposed to be set in San Diego's Little Britain.
The special two-part episode will have the San Diego-based National Terrorism Strike Force unit meet their Little Britain counterparts, the Socialist Terrorism Task Force: United Kingdom: Double Decker Bus (Sttf:uk:ddb::). Another live action spoof series will soon be premiering on Adult Swim. Following in the footsteps of "Children's Hospital" and "Ntsf:sd:suv::," Paul Scheer sold a pilot to Adult Swim for a new show that parodies the likes of "Pretty Little Liars."
Called "Filthy Sexy Teen$," Adult Swim announced the pilot back in May. When Zap2it spoke with Scheer at an event celebrating the season finales of "Children's Hospital" and "Ntsf," he opened up about the new show.
"We just sold a pilot that's going air called 'Filthy Sexy Teen$' that's a parody of 'Pretty Little Liars' and 'Gossip Girl' and stuff like that," he explains. "It's all kids. And Casey Wilson's in it, Sam Trammell's in it, Steve Yeun from 'Walking Dead' is in it, Chris Parnell is in it. Steve Yeun can pass as a kid, and Casey is the mom of...

In the grand tradition of Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion, The Sweetest Thing, Connie & Carla, Drop Dead Gorgeous and countless other female-fronted films that didn't get the respect they deserved upon release -- but have intensely devoted fan-followings -- comes Ass Backwards, a new movie written by and starring Happy Endings alum Casey Wilson and Ntsf:sd:suv's June Diane Raphael.
"I describe the movie as two asses on parade," Wilson recently told me at The 2013 Outfest Film Festival. "It's a female buddy comedy that's got it all: pageants, road trips, meth heads, a lesbian commune ... seriously. It's got everything."

More formally, Ass Backwards revolves around Kate and Chloe, two childhood best friends who met when they placed dead last in their hometown beauty pageant. Now, full-grown delusional NYC-dwellers, the ladies are given one last chance to win the crowns that eluded them as kids and take a roadtrip...

A trio of sexy super agents called the Time Angels are returning to Paul Scheer’s crime show parody Ntsf:sd:suv:: , but you might notice something a little different about them this time around. Namely, that they are not Minutes (Kali Hawk), Hours (Stacy Keibler) and Seconds (Natasha Leggero). Introducing your new set of Angels: Dash, Clock and Millie, portrayed by Eliza Dushku, Jayma Mays and Santigold, respectively. This all-girl police unit from the future journeys back to the Wild West circa 1869 to ensure that the maiden voyage on the Intercontinental Railroad goes smoothly.

We’ve already seen Kristen Bell, Sam Elliott, and Billy Eichner cast is Parks And Recreation’s upcoming “doppelgänger” episode that ignores most established definitions of “doppelgänger,” and now the show has finally found its counterpart for Aubrey Plaza’s April Ludgate. It’s June Diane Raphael, known for her appearances in shows like Ntsf:sd:suv and Party Down, and stories like that recent one involving her and writing partner Casey Wilson. According to Michael Schur, Raphael will be cool but rude as “a rich, boozy, Real Housewives type” in the Eagleton Parks Department—like Bell’s ...

Three minions take a breather
On Friday, the convention kicked into full gear, with more people in attendance than the previous two days and the start of the big ticket programming in Hall H (The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones). Many of those following the TV programming at the Con opted for Ballroom 20, with Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. among the highlights. Once again, I opted for smaller rooms, starting with the Indigo Ballroom. Unfortunately, given the popularity of the programming that morning, including Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time (always a big hit at the Con) and the Adult Swim lineup, it took quite a while to get in to the room. On the plus side though, the line was a lot of fun, with a ridiculous number of creative, fun costumes (see the bottom of the post for more).

Just when you thought the war of words between the casts of Adult Swim’s Childrens Hospital and Ntsf:sd:suv:: could not get any uglier, Paul Scheer and his comrades took the rivalry to a hilarious new low over the weekend at Comic-Con.
Not only did the Ntsf crew allege that their sister show experiments on real children, but they also accused them of undergoing “extensive” (and rather unorthodox) cosmetic procedures on their feet.

In the very first shot of Ass Backwards we meet our lead characters. well, actually, we meet their butts. True to the title, and the movie's spirit of weird women behaving very badly, Ass Backwards opens with its heroines Kate and Chloe squatting to pee outdoors, and it only gets wilder and sillier from there in this comedy, which premiered in the midnight section at Sundance two weeks ago. An out-there comedy might seem like exactly the kind of Sundance movie that never sees the light of day, but this one has the advantage of two familiar faces both onscreen and behind the screenplay. Casey Wilson, of SNL and currently of the brilliant Happy Endings, co-wrote the screenplay and co-stars with June Diane Raphael, who you'll recognize from stints on New Girl (check out this brilliant scene), Whitney Party Down and Ntsf:sd:suv.
