Juan Riedinger (Carter) happened to go to the audition by chance. He was walking in downtown when he saw the audition sign on the door. He was wearing only a t-shirt and jeans. One of the casting assistants reported he was acting strangely and thought he was a homeless, as many homeless people live in the part of the city where the audition was. He auditioned for the character of Mendez, having had only ten minutes to read the size, but the director was so stunned by his performance that he immediately asked Juan to play the lead. In the following days Juan worked with Daniele closely to improve the script.
