Long Gone Heroes marks the fifth collaboration between director John Swab and actor Frank Grillo beginning with Body Brokers and most recently One Day as a Lion. They might not be great cinema, but they’ve been well enough received, and more importantly, they’ve proven popular enough that they keep getting money to make more of them.
This time out, Grillo plays Gunner, ex-special forces, ex-husband, and all the other usual exes. His niece Julia is a journalist working on a story about a group violating US sanctions and bringing Venezuelan oil into the country. This gets her grabbed by some very dangerous people.
Complicating matters further is that her mother Olivia is not only a US senator,...

MGM+’s Hotel Cocaine has a rather disappointing ending. I say so because it doesn’t quite end but only begins a new chapter for Roman Compte, and personally, I’m not really interested. Hotel Cocaine’s had more misses than hits, and that’s all fine, but it’s especially because the drug-bust world simply has so many fantastic narratives that this one just doesn’t come close, despite telling it with a different approach. The show focuses on Roman Compte, Cuban drug dealer Nestor Cabal’s brother, but it’s also titled “Hotel Cocaine,” which comes from Miami’s hottest hotel at the time, “The Mutiny.” The show doesn’t really give us much about the hotel as such and is your typical cocaine show from the point of view of those involved rather than as a police procedural. In the final episode, we get a voiceover from...

“We like crime shows, at least some of us do,” writer and producer Chris Brancato told IndieWire. “We like gangster shows. We like watching people do the things that we would never do ourselves. And yet, they’ve all been done a million times.”
His own oeuvre seems to support that — but only at first glance. The creator of “Narcos,” “Godfather of Harlem,” and now MGM+’s “Hotel Cocaine” would seem to have found a very buzzy (buzzed?) niche for himself as the prestige crime saga guy. But there’s more going on than just blow.
With “Narcos,” Brancato insisted to Netflix that the actors speak in Spanish, just as the real-life characters did. And “Godfather of Harlem” opened itself up to him once he discovered that Malcolm X was friends with crime boss Bumpy Johnson. And with “Hotel Cocaine,” he takes audiences on a bumpy ride from the highs...

With only 2 episodes of Hotel Cocaine left, there’s a lot to unpack in the show. I’m not sure if over time I’ve become tolerant of the show or if this episode was actually kinda good, but I quite enjoyed it. At least there was a lot happening that didn’t involve plain old debauchery for the sake of making it feel like you’re back in the 70s. A lot happens in episode 7, some scarier than the other. Hotel Cocaine episode 7 begins with Roman dreaming about his wife Estella during his time in Cuba. We learn that she was shot dead for protesting Castro while Roman was in prison. When Roman wakes from the nightmare, Marisol tells him he’s been dreaming about her for a while now, and waking up screaming her name. Roman’s obviously frustrated by everything that’s happening around him, so it...

At the end of episode 5 of Hotel Cocaine, Valeria learned what her father and uncle actually did for a living. She had been in the van when Roman was meant to shoot Yolanda dead; however, there was a big mess since Valeria stepped out of the van and distracted Yolanda, leaving her completely shocked. Fortunately, Nestor was able to keep her safe from the shooting, but Yolanda got away as well. Episode 6 further explains the Colombian agenda, and we see Nestor interact with Henao directly. Hotel Cocaine episode 6 begins with Valeria’s bout of anger at her father. On the other hand, Roman feels disturbed by the situation and worries for his daughter.
Spoiler Alert
What does Henao tell Nestor?
In Hotel Cocaine episode 6, Nestor decides to start the war for real by showing Yolanda’s men how strong the Cubans’ hold in Miami is. On the other hand, Yolanda welcomes Henao to Miami.

MGM+’s Hotel Cocaine has now crossed over the midpoint, and finally, there’s some progress in the show. In this episode, we also see the mention of Escobar and the Cali Cartel as direct rivals of the Colombians who want to take over Miami. We knew war was just around the corner, and in episode 5, we get a glimpse of it, but not exactly in the way we expected. Episode 5 of Hotel Cocaine begins with Roman and his family now living in Nestor’s house. While Marisol isn’t really thrilled about this situation, Valeria is excited to have a room of her own with a TV in it. This whole situation is going to get really messy, really quick, though.

You know, with a title like Hotel Cocaine, I guess it’s rather obvious that the show isn’t meant to be taken seriously. I mean, some of the dialogue is honestly so bad, I don’t even think you’d hear it colloquially. The series follows Roman Compte, Miami’s biggest drug dealer and Nestor Cabal’s younger brother, on his journey to return to criminality. Okay, not technically, I guess it’s about the drug wars between the Cubans (oldies) and the Colombians (newbies) in Miami and how the “Mutiny Club” was the hub of all things drugs and debauchery at the time. So this obviously calls for a lot of the show’s run time spent on the “Mutiny Girls,” dancing, drugs, and sex that never really pushes the narrative of the show. With that said, let’s dive straight into everything that happens on the 4th episode of Hotel Cocaine.

As we get further in Hotel Cocaine I’ve started to get terrible flashbacks of old shows with bad representations of Poc on screen. Not only does this show seem to get more irrelevant by the day, but it seems like the sole purpose of it is to try and mimic the “vibe” of 1970s America. Yet it comes across as a terribly made show that frankly shouldn’t exist in 2024. The way the narrative skips from plot point to plot point just to keep us entertained makes me forget that it’s a show about drug cartels. I understand it’s a show about free spirits, and that’s what the hotel stands for, but the debauchery simply seems to distract from the main plot, leaving a show that is boring and somewhat detached. But rather than ranting about what the show could’ve been, I’ll dive straight...

When it premiered on Netflix, Narcos became a massive hit. Following the rise of Pablo Escobar as the most powerful drug lord in Latin America, the series came from co-creators Chris Brancato, Carlo Bernard, and Doug Miro. Since the three-season series ended, we have gotten a Mexico-set spin-off and the promise of more. The creators have gone their separate ways with Miro running Netflix series Griselda, also based on a true story about the infamous title queenpin. Now, Brancato has reunited with Narcos director Guillermo Navarro for a new series, Hotel Cocaine, also inspired by a true crime tale but heavily fictionalized for a pulpy good time.

MGM+’s Hotel Cocaine attempts to chronicle the epicenter of Miami’s drug trade and party scene, the “Mutiny Hotel.” I say attempts because the show is your mediocre, run-of-the-mill drug crime thriller that fails to impress despite thrusting upon us name after name of famous celebrities that visited the special hotel. Anybody who cares knows that the Mutiny Hotel was the “Studio 54” of Miami, but the show tells the story of Roman Compte, the general manager of the hotel at its peak, trying to keep it all together. In this episode, we see two parallel stories: one of Roman’s anxiety about Chucho’s awakening and one of Rick James’ creative block. It’s certainly jarring, if not completely bizarre, the way the episode plays out. It almost felt as if I was watching two completely different shows. Anyway, without further ranting, I’ll jump straight into Hotel Cocaine...

The series tosses us back to the glitz, glamour, and high-profile crime of Miami in 1978.
It highlights the Latino influence on our culture and our values, but not in the way that you might think.
For this series, creator and executive producer Chris Brancato and executive producer and director Guillermo Navarro use the background we know so well to highlight a sense of family and commitment that sours through the community.
We talked with them and the cast to get a thorough understanding of the series, which we have seen almost in its entirety.

If you’re remotely familiar with Netflix’s Griselda, then you may have heard of The Mutiny Hotel, or as MGM+ likes to call it, Hotel Cocaine. Set to disappoint from the start, the show tells the story of a man named Roman Compte, the general manager of the hotel at the time, the same old return to the crime world, trying to balance family and work and being a good person all along. Wow, how exciting! Pfft. There’s a scene in this first episode when a man’s dying and someone he is dear to tries to reflect on the urgency of the situation, but it looks like a child asking for a toy. Certainly, there’s an interest in the Miami drug world from back in the day, but churning out mediocre content is not the way to satisfy this interest. Anyway, before I turn this into...

“Colorful, intriguing, dangerous,” is how Danny Pino describes the world of Roman Compte, the real-life Cuban exile and general manager of Miami’s Mutiny Hotel and its glitzy nightclub, ground zero for the disco era’s cocaine scene. In the fictionalized eight-part drama, Hotel Cocaine, created by Chris Brancato (Godfather of Harlem), DEA agent Zulio (Michael Chiklis) pressures Compte to rat on his drug kingpin brother Nestor Cabal (Yul Vazquez) by threatening to disrupt the life of Roman’s teenage daughter Valeria (Corina Bradley). Pino gives us a room key. Carlos Rodriguez/MGM+ How is this role different from others you’ve played? Danny Pino: It’s different from the precinct in Manhattan investigating sex crimes [on Svu]. Roman is in the Studio 54 of the Caribbean. And he was an actual person. There’s pressure to get it right. I’m playing the father of Maurice Compte, a fellow actor on Mayans M.

Plot: The story of Roman Compte, Cuban exile and general manager of the Mutiny Hotel, the glamorous epicenter of the Miami cocaine scene of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. The Mutiny Hotel was Casablanca on cocaine; a glitzy nightclub, restaurant, and hotel frequented by Florida businessmen and politicians, international narcos, CIA and FBI agents, models, sports stars, and musicians. Exclusive: Matthew Del Negro (City on a Hill) is joining season 3 of Mayor of Kingstown.
Del Negro will play the role of Will Breen, a charming, seemingly good natured corrections officer at the Kingstown Women’s Prison. He will recur for five episodes.
The 10-episode third season of the Paramount+ drama series will premiere Sunday, June 2. In Season 3, a series of explosions rock Kingstown and its citizens, as a new face of the Russian mob sets up shop in the city, and a drug war rages inside and outside prison walls. The pressure is on Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) to end the war but things get complicated when a familiar face from his incarcerated past threatens to undermine the Mayor’s attempts to keep the peace among all factions.
Most recently, Del Negro co-starred as Detective Chris Caysen on Showtime’s City on a Hill opposite Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge.

Pinewood Studios has sold its minority stake in the Dominican Republic’s horizon water tank facility, which has been renamed Lantica Studios after its now sole owner, Lantica Media.
Formerly known as the Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios, Lantica Studios is undertaking the building of a fourth soundstage, measuring 16,000 sq.ft., and two additional workshop spaces of 12,000 sq. ft each, mainly dedicated to housing camera, grip and electric equipment vendors. These are set to open by the Spring of 2025.
The landmark expansion comes as the 10-year-old studio has seen record growth in international and local production, which has led to the availability of more skilled crew in the Dominican Republic (Dr), either trained on the job or in regularly held workshops. “We’ve grown from hiring locals at an average rate of 400 – 500 a year to 2,000 a year,” said Albert Martinez, CEO of Lantica Studios.
