Gavin Hood's 2009 superhero flick "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," the fourth film in its franchise, was widely rejected by fans and generally rejected by critics. The tone of the film was weirdly bright and "Saturday morning" for a grizzled character like Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), while the movie's steady stream of fantastical characters was more distracting and busy than intriguing and textured. The editing was also notoriously bad, with scenes where characters seem to teleport up to rooftops with no explanation. Many X-Men purists particularly objected to the depictions of characters like Gambit (Taylor Kitsch) and Wade Wilson aka Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) as they dramatically differed from their on-page counterparts.
The Deadpool changes were especially egregious, at least if the exiting crowds I overheard in 2009 were any indicator. In the comics, Deadpool is a mouthy, masked comedy character who wisecracks his way through his murders. His only superpowers were rapid healing and immortality.

Fresh off the premiere of its new Fox drama “Murder in a Small Town,” Jeff Wachtel’s Future Shack Entertainment shingle is ramping up its development slate — next via a first-look pact with Daily Beast chief content officer Joanna Coles. Future Shack and Coles have multiple projects in development, including a take on MSNBC anchor Katy Tur’s memoir “Rough Draft.”
Wachtel and Coles are also shopping the drama “Base Camp,” which looks at the crowded — and dangerous — queue to get to the top of Mt. Everest. Playwright and screenwriter Anchuli Felicia King is the scribe behind that project.
Additionally, Future Shack and Coles have two more scripts in the works at 20th Television. Coles, who was previously chief content officer at Hearst, was the inspiration for the Freeform drama “The Bold Type,” which she also executive produced. “She’s a phenomenal producer, but primarily a magazine editor and tastemaker,...

When the dust finally settles on the fantasy phenomenon known as "Game of Thrones" and fans are able to look back without being clouded by emotion (along the lines of what's been happening recently with the 20th anniversary of "Lost" and its ongoing reappraisal), time may prove to be quite kind to the groundbreaking HBO series -- controversies and all. Some of those controversies have become an inextricable part of how we discuss and analyze the epic undertaking, like its iffy approach to depictions of sexual violence or the various ways the adaptation strayed from author George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. Others fall into a different and more nuanced category entirely, one that's worth dissecting even all these years later. In that light, a particularly odd scene from over a decade ago might be worth a second look.

Butterfield broke out playing Otis Milburn in Netflix smash Sex Education. Other credits include The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Nanny McPhee and Ender’s Game.

Much has been said about who will play Hal Jordan in DC Studios and HBO's Lanterns, with Avengers: Infinity War star Josh Brolin reportedly declining to wear the ring in this long-awaited reboot.
Ewan McGregor, Chris Pine, and Timothy Olyphant are all still in contention but what of John Stewart? There are plenty of fan casts but little has been said - even from the most unreliable scoopers - about who will play the fan-favourite Justice League Unlimited character.
Well, according to Daniel Richtman, Elvis star Kelvin Harrison Jr. is now being considered for the role of John Stewart.
The actor has received a Screen Actors Guild Award and nominations for a British Academy Film Award, Gotham Award, and Independent Spirit Award. June 4, 2024 – Academy Award winner Sir Ben Kingsley, beloved James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan and Star Wars universe luminary Mark Hamill form the ultimate vocal rogues’ gallery in Mofac Animation’s upcoming The King of Kings, an animated family film inspired by a little-known short story by Charles Dickens depicting the life and times of Jesus Christ.
Kingsley voices High Priest Caiaphas, who presided over the Sanhedrin trial of Jesus. Hamill takes on the role of King Herod, who, according to the Gospel of Matthew, ordered the Massacre of the Innocents in an attempt to kill Jesus as an infant. And Brosnan gives animated life to Pontius Pilate, who ultimately ordered the crucifixion of Jesus. The triumvirate of villainous voices further enhances the A-list cast behind the faith-based animated film, which also includes Academy Award & Emmy Award winners Kenneth Branagh (Belfast) and Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Golden Globe...

The Bulgarian producer of an espionage thriller sued Abigail Breslin, one of the film’s stars, on Friday, alleging that her “hysterical” and “imaginary” allegations against co-star Aaron Eckhart have imperiled the film’s release.
Dream Team Studios produced the film, entitled “Classified,” in Malta earlier this year. Eckhart plays a hitman who learns that his CIA handler has been dead for years. Breslin plays his daughter.
According to the lawsuit, the entire production “almost ground to a halt” when Breslin accused Eckhart of “aggressive, demeaning and unprofessional” behavior on set. Breslin alleged that his behavior “placed her at various times in peril,” and she refused to be alone with him in several scenes, according to the suit.
Breslin filed a complaint to SAG-AFTRA “setting forth her fears and blasting Eckhart’s behavior,” according to the suit. Eckhart’s representative did not respond to a request for comment.

Nobody sets out to make a movie that will fail, be it a tiny independent production or the biggest of big blockbusters from a major studio. On the flip side, occasionally arrogance of a sort sets in and there is an element of presumed success with a film, and those projects -- more often than not -- feel doomed to fail. Such was the case with Lionsgate's 2016 big-budget fantasy play "Gods of Egypt," which bombed spectacularly upon its initial release. Yet, lofty ambitions existed as this was eyed as just the first entry in a brand new franchise. Before it all went to hell, that is.
The film, directed by Alex Proyas, cost a whopping $140 million to produce before marketing, putting it firmly in gigantic blockbuster territory. But it made a paltry $31 million in total at the domestic box office and topped out at $150 million worldwide. Per Variety, Lionsgate...

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

There are many gorgeous-looking films in this year’s Oscar race, but even with 10 films nominated for Best Picture, only five films could be recognized for their production design, a role that plays a large part in the overall look of a film, along with cinematography.
Besides designing and drafting and deciding what needs to be built on soundstages, the production designer also is involved very early on in finding the best locations and hiring the rest of the art department, including the set decorator, who is responsible for dressing up said locations.

Four of the five nominees this year are also nominated for Best Picture, while the nomination for Damien Chazelle‘s “Babylon” is one of only three nominations it received, and it didn’t make the cut for the top prize.

When Wolfgang Petersen burst onto the scene with his WWII submarine masterpiece "Das Boot," Hollywood came calling. Any director who could pin audiences to their seats for two-and-a-half hours with a film that rarely leaves the interior of a U-boat surely had the skills to enthrall viewers with a mainstream blockbuster. While Petersen proved more than reliable with smashes like "In the Line of Fire," "Outbreak," "Air Force One," and "The Perfect Storm," he occasionally found himself attached to ambitious projects that, for one reason or another, failed to launch or launched without him at the helm.
Petersen, who died on August 12, 2022, at the age of 81, left behind a litany of what-ifs. He was in the mix on several tantalizing projects that could've changed the complexion of superhero and YA filmmaking; there's an alternate universe in which Petersen revived the DC universe with a Batman and Superman mash-up in the early 2000s.

In frilly YA frivol “The King’s Daughter,” Louis Xiv (an awkwardly bewigged Pierce Brosnan) orders a mermaid captured and brought back to Versailles, so that he might sacrifice the creature during a solar eclipse and attain eternal life, it takes just a few minutes for such an amazing feat to be accomplished. But haste is hardly the order of the day with this quasi-historic fairy tale, which follows that thrilling opening with royal balls and cross-country horseback rides, courtly intrigue and plentiful costume changes — a girly dream of the French monarchy, for which would-be audiences have been obliged to wait a quarter-century.
The well-liked book on which it’s based, Vonda N. McIntyre’s “The Moon and the Sun,” was published in 1997, and discussions began almost immediately about an adaptation. The film focuses largely on what happens after the mermaid reaches France, and the Sun King (played by Brosnan with...

Chicago – The Oscars are this upcoming Sunday, March 27th, and one of the great performances of the year – nominated for Best Actress – is Jessica Chastain as Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” The producer of the film is Gigi Pritzker.

“The Eyes of Tammy Faye” is remarkable because of Chastain, who portrays the infamous televangelist from college age to advanced middle age (with the use of prosthetics). The film is a balanced and nuanced story of Tammy Faye, making significant commentary on the state of America and religion during her reign of influence. The ending of the film is an artistic use of cinema – by director Michael Sholwalter – and Jessica Chastain simply kills it.
The veteran producer of the “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” is Gigi Pritzker, who previously had guided Oscar nominated films like...

Following a competitive bidding situation, Gigi Pritzker’s indie production company Madison Wells has acquired rights to develop a feature film adaptation of “State of Terror,” a thriller novel by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and author Louise Penny, the company announced on Thursday.
“State of Terror” centers on novice Secretary of State Ellen Adams, who is unexpectedly brought into the administration by a newly-elected president, her political and personal adversary. Events soon erupt that sweep her into a world of global intrigue and diplomacy where the stakes could not be higher and the potential consequences, both personal and global, could not be greater.
Both Clinton and Penny will serve as executive producers as well as consultants on the film. Clinton will produce via her HiddenLight Productions banner founded by Clinton, Sam Branson and Chelsea Clinton. Gigi Pritzker and Head of Film and TV Rachel Shane will produce for Madison Wells.
