The shark thriller film “Zipline” has launched sales with a cast that includes Ioan Gruffudd, Ross Butler, Holland Roden and Sonia Ammar.
The feature is written by George Mahaffey Jr. and directed by Magnus Martens. Simple House Films is producing, marking the debut project under that production banner. Black Bear owns the international rights to the film.
“After reuniting for a relaxing getaway on a tropical island, a group of college friends find their adventurous spirits tested to the limit when an exhilarating zipline excursion leaves them hanging perilously hundreds of feet over a deserted lagoon. As the temperature rises and the zipline begins to collapse, they work together to find a way down but are horrified to discover that an even greater threat awaits them in the depths below,” reads the film’s logline.

Mattel, the toy company behind Barbie and Hot Wheels, is developing a feature film about the stereoscopic image device View-Master.
The live-action movie will be developed with Sony Pictures and Escape Artists. View-Master has been around since 1939. In a press release, Mattel described the toy as a “popular childhood staple for generations,” one that has “taken its fans all over the world with its 3-D image reels, creating worlds of imagination and storytelling for every adventure seeker at heart.” How this will translate to the big screen isn’t yet clear, though the movie is billed as a “four-quadrant family adventure.”
“View-Master has inspired generations to embark on boundless adventures, offering a treasure trove of storytelling possibilities for this film,” said Robbie Brenner, president of Mattel Films. “We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Escape Artists’ Todd Black to bring this Mattel franchise to life. Actor Jamie Foxx has been somewhat quiet about the illness that took The Soloist star out of the spotlight for quite some time. Recently, however, Foxx revealed just how severe the illness was and how his supporters helped him in the aftermath.

Foxx was both absent and quiet during a good chunk of 2023. His daughter, Corinne Foxx, posted on social media that Foxx experienced a medical complication that left him hospitalized. This led to rumors running rampant about the cause of Foxx’s medical condition and the true state of his physical health.
Foxx would reemerge in the public eye in 2023 at the Critics Choice Awards, both seemingly in good spirits and in strong physical health. However, it was clear from his onstage speech that the illness he experienced took a physical toll on the actor.

Very few actors in the industry can even dream of what Daniel Day-Lewis achieved in his career. The actor, often considered one of the greatest in the industry, has made a huge name for his detailed research behind every role. However, even after having 3 Oscars and numerous hits, his net worth is lower than most of his contemporaries including Denzel Washington.

Although Denzel Washington is only 2 years older than Daniel Day-Lewis, the latter’s net worth is not even close to the Equalizer star. With numerous box office hits, Washington has also been a commercially successful star. Interestingly, Day-Lewis, even after having such a low net worth, did not need work for 7 years before finally announcing his comeback in 2024.

After a quiet summer at the box office, the third annual National Cinema Day hasn’t given venues the boost they might have been expecting…
If you took advantage of the flat £4 ticket price in UK cinemas for National Cinema Day on Saturday, you might have been one of a rather elite few. The event, which for the last two years has provided venues with a nice little admissions boost, has seen a massive drop in the number of tickets sold, from 1.56m in 2023 to around 1m this year, according to Screen Daily.
The weekend itself was notably lacking in new releases, with Entertainment Film Distributors’ French-language The Count Of Monte Christo the only new film opening in more than 100 locations.
As a result, the film which unexpectedly returned to the top of the UK box office seven weeks after its release was Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 – buoyed by the...

In recent years, Labor Day weekend’s reputation as a box office dead zone has been upended by strong showings from films like “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “The Equalizer 3.” Unfortunately, for 2024, standard perception prevails with a predictably lackluster showing.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros.) opens next week to a projected $100 million+ debut, starting what looks like an improved rest of the year compared to the final four months in 2023. For now, it’s tread water time, with the late summer’s best doing best (and in some cases holding extremely well).
The weekend’s total of $86 million was down only $6 million from last year despite the boost from the Denzel Washington sequel ($35 million). Key was the sustained strength of previously top titles. Still #1 “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Disney) fell only 17 percent ($15 million), now about $600 million. Two Universal hits already on PVOD did even better. #5 “Twisters” actually...

In July, Lionsgate executives gathered for a routine greenlight meeting. On the agenda, however, was not a typical project. The studio was looking at Rush Hour 4, the long-talked-about next installment in the action comedy franchise. In different times, it might seem like an attractive idea for Lionsgate — which has an interest in building franchises to complement its John Wick series — or any studio looking to capitalize on audience nostalgia with well-known IP.
But doing the movie would mean potentially working with franchise filmmaker Brett Ratner, who, according to a source, was a part of the pitch as the project’s potential director and producer, despite having not worked in Hollywood for the past seven years, since he faced multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment in 2017.
At the time, Ratner strongly denied all allegations of sexual misconduct, and no charges were brought against him. He was dropped by his...

"Deadpool & Wolverine" is such a dizzying whirlwind of meta references, Marvel Studios Easter eggs, and shocking cameos that you really do need to see the film more than once to, in Pokémon parlance, catch 'em all. Just take a look at your social media feed. If you follow a lot of full-on comic book nerds, you know folks are still sifting through the film's unceasing chaos for every last morsel of minutia.
When it comes to the Fox character cameos, specifically those that don't merit the ultra-heroic slow-motion entrances given to Gambit, Elektra and X-23, you might be left wondering if they were played by the actual actors who originated the roles. The action flashes by with such relentless fury that you don't always get a telling close-up.

Ang Lee, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) Ang Lee
Ang Lee was pulling his hair out. He was in preproduction in China on his ambitious martial arts movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon when a silent investor pulled out. “It was the toughest movie I’d ever tried to make,” recalls Lee, who thought it was all over. But Columbia came to the rescue, thanks to a new initiative to assist local-language filmmaking in foreign markets. Gareth Wigan, a widely respected Sony exec, became involved, as did Barbara Robinson, who lived in Hong Kong and headed up Columbia Pictures Film Production Asia, and was asked to meet with Lee in Taiwan. A coalition came together, including Columbia, China Film Co-Production Corp., Good Machine International, Edko Films and Zoom Hunt Productions. M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter Ishana Night Shyamalan made her feature directorial debut with a thriller called The Watchers, which received a June 7th theatrical release, courtesy of Warner Bros. / New Line Cinema. (You can read our review Here and watch our interviews with the director and cast members Here.) The movie did not enjoy the sort of box office success many of the elder Shyamalan’s films have, drawing in just over $25 million worldwide so far. But maybe it will reach a wider audience with its digital release, which is just one week away. Media Play News reports that on June 28th, three weeks after it reached theatres, The Watchers will be available to watch in the comfort of your own home. The 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD release will follow on August 27th.

Dakota Fanning is only 30 years old, but she's been acting professionally for 24 of them. A child actor who fortunately avoided the trap of the teen idol curse, Fanning successfully transitioned into more mature roles like Squeaky Fromme in Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," Emma Collins in "The Equalizer 3," and as Marge Sherwood on "Ripley." Now, Fanning is starring in Ishana Shyamalan's feature directorial debut, "The Watchers," a dark fairytale about an artist named Mina who gets stranded in the woods and finds sanctuary with three strangers as they are all watched by mysterious, unseen creatures at night.
Fanning plays Mina, a messy, complicated, driven character that is a bit outside of the wheelhouse of what general audiences may be used to seeing her portray. The success of "The Watchers" hinges on whether or not the audience can identify with and root for Mina's survival.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has seen operating income fall nearly 10% for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024.
The company’s operating income was $808M in dollar terms compared with $894M for the comparable period a year before, which was down 9.6%. Revenues crept up to $10.31B from $10.14B for Fy.
Sony, which is headquartered in Japan, said the Hollywood strikes had impacted its Pictures segment, which comprises TV production, motion pictures and media networks (including streaming).
Whereas in 2023 Sony had suffered from a lack of new theatrical product, this year the increased number and growth at streamer Crunchyroll helped to offset a decrease in series delivered due to the labor action and lower catalog licensing of motion pictures.
On the motion pictures side, full-year revenues were $3.74B, up slightly on the previous year, but TV fell from nearly $4B to just over $3.8B. However, media networks grew from $2.69B to $2.72B.

Antoine Fuqua is a worker. Not only has he released two feature films in the past two years — Emancipation and The Equalizer 3 — but the director has also been directing and producing some big television projects as well. He helmed episodes of Legacy: The True Story of the LA Lakers and The Terminal List as well as executive producing Jeremy Renner’s hit show, Mayor of Kingstown. He is also well into the production of a colossal undertaking of capturing the dizzyingly epic and tragic life of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, in the biopic Michael. Now Deadline reports that Fuqua is developing a feature adaptation to the YA novel, Sky’s End, from New York Times bestseller debut author Marc J. Gregson.
The novel is a new release that was published this year by Peachtree Teen. According to Deadline, “The book watches as exiled teenager Conrad enters the...

Drake and Kendrick Lamar have been embroiled in a bitter rivalry in the music industry for many years, during which both musicians have been critical of each other. The latter, 36, recently released a new track called Euphoria, in which he once again targeted Drake. Three days after releasing this diss track, he intensified his feud with Drake on Friday morning by releasing a second one, 6:16 in LA.
This is the latest in their long-running beef, which has gotten bigger and more intense over the past few weeks, involving other rappers.

Deemed one of the greatest actors in Hollywood, Denzel Washington exudes a classic movie star aura. Renowned for his enduring charm and the seamless blend of irony and sincerity in his iconic roles, Washington embodies the timeless essence of a Hollywood legend. He is also known for avoiding the franchise films, with the notable exception of The Equalizer trilogy.

He has also been commended for the same by being named the second-highest-grossing actor to not star in a franchise, following the Titanic star Leonardo DiCaprio. However, Washington did not seem to mind the ranking, as he responded with a touch of wit.
Denzel Washington Has no Issues Losing to Leonardo DiCaprio
In a conversation with ScreenRant, Denzel Washington expressed his disinterest in sequels and potential franchise films, as he highlighted his approach of focusing on each film individually rather than considering potential sequels.

Based on the 1980s TV series of the same name, "The Equalizer" trilogy sees Denzel Washington playing a killing machine. Washington is Robert McCall, a former Marine and ex-Defense Intelligence Agency agent who would really like to be left alone. Unfortunately, scumbags and other villains frequently cross his path, which means McCall is often getting back into action and killing a lot of people.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the "Equalizer" trilogy is ultra-violent and action-packed. It's also surprisingly solid. These aren't great movies, but like Robert McCall, they get the job done in swift, brutal fashion. "The Equalizer 3" feels like an ending of sorts for Robert McCall, which makes for a sturdy trilogy. But how does the trilogy stack up as a whole? Which is the best entry? Which is the worst?
Let's find out by ranking "The Equalizer" movies!

Dakota Fanning has revealed the one date every year that Tom Cruise never forgets: her birthday!
During a recent interview for Harper’s Bazaar with her Ripley co-star Andrew Scott, the actress shared that she got her first mobile phone as a gift from the Top Gun: Maverick star.
After Scott guessed the correct answer to “Who gave Dakota her first cellphone?” saying, “Ok, well it’s going to be some Hollywood icon … Tom Cruise,” Fanning confirmed that the actor gifted her a Motorola Razr for her 11th birthday while they were filming 2005’s War of the Worlds together.
“Oh, my God, I was so excited,” the Twilight actress recalled, before noting that she “didn’t have anybody to call or text at that time,” so she wasn’t exactly sure how useful the present was for her.
“You know, I was 11,” she quipped. “But I loved having it. I loved it.

While starring on the Emmy Award-winning HBO series “Succession,” Emmy winner Jeremy Strong developed a reputation as an actor who takes himself and his craft incredibly seriously, perhaps overly so. There was a controversial New Yorker profile, and critical comments from his co-star Brian Cox that suggested some frustration with Strong’s methods. Strong famously could not understand why people thought “Succession” was a comedy, even though it was hilarious. Even when his fellow actors were playing it as a comedy, he was always deadly serious.
In a new interview with The New York Times, Strong reflected on his reputation for humorlessness, and it sounds like he might be lightening up. Just a little bit.
Asked if he’s interested in comedy, he acknowledged that “Succession” was “wickedly funny,” which is a change from how he used to talk about the show. “I don’t know that that show can be put into any box,...

Jeremy Strong’s Emmy-winning tenure as Kendall Roy on HBO’s “Succession” is over, and he told The New York Times Magazine in a recent interview that “there was a moment when the show ended where I felt a profound sense of, ‘Was this the thing? Was this the event of my life?’ And then a great determination to achieve exit velocity from it so I could attempt to do more.”
That “more” is now coming into focus. Strong is currently on Broadway headlining the play “Enemy of the People” alongside Michael Imperioli and Victoria Pedretti. He’s also set to play Roy Cohn in the upcoming biographical drama “The Apprentice,” which features Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump and Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump.
Strong told the publication that “I haven’t spent much time worrying about” whether he’ll be able to distance himself from the career-defining role of Kendall Roy.

Taraji P. Henson is going to keep telling her truth.
As she took the stage at the 2024 ABFF Honors on Sunday night, “The Color Purple” star pointed to a tattoo on her left bicep that spells out those words exactly: “The Truth.”
“If you are alive and God blessed you with another day to live, it is your job to tell your truth,” Henson told the crowd gathered for the American Black Film Festival’s marquee gala. “Because by you telling your truth, you set yourself free and somebody else free. When we stay quiet, nothing changes. The squeaky wheel gets fixed.”
That ideology is something Henson’s learned to keep close over the years, particularly when it comes to navigating Hollywood.
Late last year, Henson spoke her truth and sparked an important conversation about the unique challenges Black actresses face. She used her platform during “The Color Purple” press...

“You can’t see them, but they see everything.”
Warner Bros. has released the trailer for the upcoming horror film “The Watchers,” written and directed by Ishana Shyamalan, the daughter of horror veteran M. Night Shyamalan, in her directorial debut. Based on the gothic horror novel by A.H. Shine, the film stars Dakota Fanning and is set for release in North America on June 7.
Per its official description, “The Watchers” follows Mina (Fanning), a 28-year-old artist “who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland. When Mina finds shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night.”
In the eerie trailer, Mina looks at a wall made entirely of glass. She’s informed that it’s actually a one-way window; every night the group is watched by a sinister audience, and Mina is just the latest addition to the cast.

Paramount could throw Ridley Scott to the lions if Gladiator 2 fails to perform like gangbusters at the box office. A new report from The Hollywood Reporter reveals the ballooning cost of production on the anticipated sequel, with insiders close to the project saying the film budgeted at $165 million is closer to $310 million. Let that amount sink in for a moment.
Per THR’s sources, the net cost of the 49-day shoot was under $250 million. “It’s a runaway,” says one source. “It’s not being managed.” How did this happen? The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes did not help. Production for Gladiator 2 shut down in July because of the negotiations, costing the studio $600,000 a week, roughly $10 million. Scott resumed filming in December, though some say he continued to capture footage using extras during the strikes.
Some wonder if the Gladiator 2 set was cursed. In June, six crewmembers sustained non-life-threatening burn injuries.

Netflix says its ad-supported plan includes “the vast majority” of TV shows and movies available on the standard no-ads tiers — but more than a year after the streamer introduced the cheaper option, several popular titles remain unavailable to customers with the ad plan.
Most recently, Netflix customers noticed that Eli Roth’s horror film “Thanksgiving” (pictured above), added Feb. 17 for subscribers on ad-free tiers, is unavailable on the ad plan. The service notes that the slasher pic — currently at the No. 3 spot on Netflix’s top 10 movies in the U.S. — is not available to members on the ad plan because of licensing restrictions.
“While the vast majority of TV shows and movies are available on an ad-supported plan, a small number are not due to licensing restrictions,” the streamer says in an article on its help site. “These titles will appear with a lock icon when you search or browse Netflix.

The week of Jan. 15-21 was a big one for streaming.
Seven titles — three original series, three acquired shows and one movie — each drew more than 1 billion minutes of viewing for the week, the most that have ever hit that mark in the four-year history of Nielsen’s streaming charts. The previous high was six, which has happened four times (including two weeks earlier).
Kids’ favorite Bluey was the overall No. 1, with just over 1.5 billion minutes on Disney+. Reacher (1.23 billion) reclaimed the top spot among original shows from the prior week‘s leader, Fool Me Once, which fell by more than 50 percent to 1.06 billion minutes of watch time. Netflix’s heist movie Lift grew by 19 percent week-to-week, scoring 1.04 billion minutes.
Young Sheldon (1.16 billion minutes), Netflix’s docuseries American Nightmare (1.12 billion) and Grey’s Anatomy (1.09 billion) also hit the billion-minute mark.

A pact between Apple Original Films, A24, Spike Lee, and Denzel Washington is making noise this Thursday with news about a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime drama High and Low. Lee and Washington are old friends, of course, with the duo’s fourth collaboration being for 2006’s Inside Man.
In Kurosawa’s High and Low, an executive of a Yokohama shoe company becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom. Details about Lee’s remake are scarce, though we know it will be an English-language reimagining of the original—details about how and if the plot will differ from Kurosawa’s classic crime drama remains a mystery.
Alan Fox and Lee wrote the screenplay for the High and Low remake, with A24, Escape Artists, and Mandalay Pictures handling development. Production kicks off in March, with Todd Black producing for...

A new Spike Lee Joint is in the works that will reunite the director with Denzel Washington. Apple Original Films is partnering with A24 on “High and Low,” an English-language adaptation of the 1963 Akira Kurosawa crime film of the same name.
“High and Low” marks the first time Washington and Lee will work together since 2006’s “Inside Man.” It will be their fifth film together in addition to “Mo’ Better Blues,” “Malcolm X,” and “He Got Game.”
The project also brings back together Washington and Todd Black, who produced “Fences,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and “The Equalizer” films. Washington previously starred in another Apple and A24 film, Joel Coen’s 2022 “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” which netted Denzel his 10th Oscar nomination.
Production on “High and Low” will start in March. A24 plans to release the film theatrically before it streams on Apple TV+.

Denzel Washington and Spike Lee are reuniting for High and Low, a thriller that has landed at Apple Original Films.
The feature is a partnership between Apple and A24, with the latter to release the High and Low theatrically before a global launch on Apple TV+.
Written by Alan Fox and Lee, the project is an English-language reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s crime thriller High and Low. The 1963 Japanese movie told of a shoe executive that was in the middle of a complex corporate takeover when his plans are derailed by the accidental kidnapping and ransom of his chauffeur’s son, instead of his own son.
The thriller is due to begin production in March with Lee in the director’s chair and Washington starring. It will be the fifth collaboration between Lee and Washington. Their most recent was the 2006 critical and box office hit, Inside Man. Their other movies include Mo’ Better Blues,...

Healthy consumer demand for feature films after their theatrical release windows drove a 17% rise in home entertainment spending in 2023, according to the Digital Entertainment Group.
A preliminary version of the Deg’s annual survey of spending was released Tuesday, with the final one due in March. It found spending across digital and physical home entertainment formats in 2023 reached $43 billion, up from $36.8 billion in 2022. While film transactions were robust, with blockbusters like Oppenheimer spurring demand across digital and physical sectors, the Deg warned that the dual strikes could have an “adverse impact” on results in “the next few quarters.”
Subscription streaming, the Deg reported, citing data from UK-based research firm Omdia, surged more than 21% year-over-year to top $37 billion. The category dwarfed video on demand (VOD) and electronic sell-thru (Est), with the ranks of major subscription services having swelled just prior to and during the pandemic. On the other side of Covid,...

Audiences did a lot of streaming in the first week of January.
According to Nielsen, there were six titles with more than 1B minutes viewed from January 1 to January 7, with the series in first place topping 3B.
Before diving into that, the company issued a correction on the last two weeks of December, which were inaccurately reported due to a glitch with Prime Video‘s audio asset capture meant that reporting for any title added to the service between December 20 and January 16 is delayed.
That means that Reacher was actually No. 1 for the weeks of December 18 and December 25 with about 1.4B viewing minutes each week.
When Nielsen previously reported the numbers for these weeks, viewing for Episodes 4 and 5 of Reacher Season 2 were not counted. Still, the series managed to stay afloat on the charts despite not getting a boost from the new episodes. Reacher has been battling it out with...
