During YouTube’s recent Brandcast, an executive from Universal discussed how YouTube played a crucial role in turning Unfriended into a sleeper hit. The found footage flick isn’t the only new horror film benefiting from an online video push; Focus Features recently teamed up with digital studio Cinemand for a video in which YouTube and Vine stars promote the upcoming release of Insidious: Chapter 3.

The video is titled “Tiptoe Through The Tulips,” and it is a cover of the classic song of the same name. The video’s four stars--Meg DeAngelis, Eric Ochoa, Brittany Furlan, and Christian DelGrosso--put a horror movie spin on the track, with DeAngelis starring as a creepy stalker of sorts. Fans of the Insidious films have likely never listened to "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" quite the same way since following Josh Lambert into the fire-face demon's lair and hearing the classic song bouncing off the walls. Last October, we shared audio of indie rock band Cherry Glazerr's cover of the famous song, and now Cinemand and Focus Features have teamed up to make a music video of the band's chilling cover. The video tells a story all its own, and it debuted today on Totally Sketch.

The "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" music video was directed by Michael Gallagher and comes from Cinemand, which was founded by Gallagher (”Smiley”), Jana Winternitz (”urFRENZ”), and Michael Wormser (”Smiley”).

The music video was made in partnership between Cinemand – the one-stop-shop digital studio creating premium content for millennials – and Focus Features.

After more than two years of episodes, Lazar and co-creator Damon Berger are looking to inject some new life into the channel. Well take a look at that. I’m not familiar with Michael Gallagher’s YouTube work, but this image from his new movie Smiley does more than enough to pique my interest. The plot doesn’t exactly sound that original, but quality always lies in the execution. It’s fascinating how Internet stars are increasingly crossing over to work in the “legitimate” filmmaking world. Stuff like Smiley is likely a harbinger of what we can expect for the future of movie making.

WetWork Media and Clearwater Productions are set to begin shooting their film The Locals, which takes the current "found footage" horror sub-genre and places it within the familiar territory of the slasher and cannibal film framework.  Shooting will take place in Los Angeles.

The Locals is being directed by Eric Anthony Pereira (who worked on Pirahna 3D's Second Unit), from his script and is being produced by Danny Lopes and Brandon Cottrell.  The cast includes Devanny Pinn (Nude Nuns With Big Guns, Song of the Shattered), Danny Lopes (Torture Chamber), Angelina Armani (Laid to Rest II), Angie Savage (Cut), Brandon Slagle (2012: Ice Age, Vivid), Tawny Amber Young (Nude Nuns With Big Guns, Cut), Ryan L.
