During YouTube’s recent Brandcast, an executive from Universal discussed how YouTube played a crucial role in turning Unfriended into a sleeper hit. The found footage flick isn’t the only new horror film benefiting from an online video push; Focus Features recently teamed up with digital studio Cinemand for a video in which YouTube and Vine stars promote the upcoming release of Insidious: Chapter 3.
The video is titled “Tiptoe Through The Tulips,” and it is a cover of the classic song of the same name. The video’s four stars--Meg DeAngelis, Eric Ochoa, Brittany Furlan, and Christian DelGrosso--put a horror movie spin on the track, with DeAngelis starring as a creepy stalker of sorts. Cinemand, which is led by YouTube star Michael Gallagher, created the video to hype the third installment of the Insidious franchise, which will arrive in theaters on June 5th. Fans of the Insidious films have likely never listened to "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" quite the same way since following Josh Lambert into the fire-face demon's lair and hearing the classic song bouncing off the walls. Last October, we shared audio of indie rock band Cherry Glazerr's cover of the famous song, and now Cinemand and Focus Features have teamed up to make a music video of the band's chilling cover. The video tells a story all its own, and it debuted today on Totally Sketch.
The "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" music video was directed by Michael Gallagher and comes from Cinemand, which was founded by Gallagher (”Smiley”), Jana Winternitz (”urFRENZ”), and Michael Wormser (”Smiley”).
"In a rare blending of classic tune, hot new movie, and next-gen talent, Cinemand tapped top stars from YouTube and Vine (Meg Deangelis, Eric Ochoa, Brittany Furlan, and Christian DelGrosso) to act in the video.

Finally, a slasher for the cyber-obsessed generation we live in, knowledgeably created by the geekers that have amassed millions of YouTube views in an effort to rule the internet.
Director Michael J. Gallagher is responsible for the comedy channel “Totally Sketch,” Shane Dawson you may recognize from “Shane Dawson TV,” and Toby Turner of “The Annoying Orange” fame all provide social commentary about the 4chan viewing, meme-crazed teenagers who waste hours surfing the internet. Smiley is their techie brain-child which exploits the internet’s wicked ways, creating a slasher villain who brings “trolling” to horrific new heights. This is what happens when doing it for the “lulz” goes wrong, and when emoticons attack.
So for those lost in today’s current trend of LOLcats, memes, YouTube sensations, misspelled text, made up words, and the art of “trolling,” consider yourself far outside the intended demographic of Smiley. Stuffed with internet jokes...

We’ve been following Michael Gallagher’s (Totally Sketch) upcoming horror movie rather closely (if only because “Smiley” himself is so creepy looking), and as its limited release nears (October 12th in select cities like NY, La, Chicago, Philly, Houston, and Atlanta), we have a new trailer for the indie horror movie:
Synopsis:
The story of the film follows a mentally fragile college student named Ashley (Caitlin Gerard from “Magic Mike” and “The Social Network”) who, after learning of an urban legend in which a mysterious serial killer named “Smiley” can be summoned through the Internet, must decide whether she is losing her mind or becoming Smiley‘s next victim.” Smiley also stars Melanie Papalia (“Endgame”) and Andrew James Allen (“Make It or Break It”), with Roger Bart (“Desperate Housewives”), Keith David (“The Thing”) and Liza Weil (“Scandal”) rounding out the cast.

Well take a look at that. I’m not familiar with Michael Gallagher’s YouTube work, but this image from his new movie Smiley does more than enough to pique my interest. The plot doesn’t exactly sound that original, but quality always lies in the execution. It’s fascinating how Internet stars are increasingly crossing over to work in the “legitimate” filmmaking world. Stuff like Smiley is likely a harbinger of what we can expect for the future of movie making.

The Station, Maker's original YouTube comedy network featuring over a million subscribers, will be the home of BobbyTV, a new original YouTube channel created by Lee and financed by Maker. "I have my own channel and I can be as crazy as I want to be?!" said Lee. "On the other hand they say I have to start tweeting now. They’ll regret that." The Station predates the YouTube Partner Program and is credited with launching many top members of Youtube’s all-time most subscribed personalities, including KassemG, LisaNova, Totally Sketch, Shane Dawson, Shay Carl, and Phil DeFranco. Danny Lopes From WetWork Media and Clearwater Productions comes "The Locals". With The Locals, producers intend to reach out to horror fans of all ages. The Locals will play up to the moderness of the "found footage" horror sub-genre whiles seamlessly incoporating an 80's slasher angel with some cannibalism that harkens back to the popularity of this sub-genre in the 70's. The Locals will also play up to urban legends and tale talls while capturing the fondness some fans share for the VHS camcorder style of horror all in a cohesive narrative. In the process, The Locals is bound to give each different type of horror fan something to look forward to.
