Joe Egan, who co-founded Stealers Wheel with Gerry Rafferty and co-wrote and sang on the enduring hit “Stuck in the Middle with You,” died July 6. He was 77. The news was shared on the late Rafferty’s official Facebook page, but no details were provided.
“Very sad news that the other half of Stealers Wheel, Joe Egan, passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon with his nearest and dearest around him,” read the post on the page run by Rafferty’s daughter, Martha. “I will always remember him as a sweet and gentle soul. May he rest in peace.”
Egan — who originally dreamed of soccer stardom — and Rafferty met as teenagers at St. Mirin’s Academy in their hometown of Paisley, Scotland, and formed Stealers Wheel in the early 1970s. Their first two singles stiffed, but the third would become a rock and pop standard.

Ms. Pat could never be June Cleaver. Nor does she have to be. That point is made in the very first episode of The Ms. Pat Show’s recently released eight-episode fourth season. During her signature stand-up routine kicking off each episode of the BET+ series (the comedy is based on its star’s stand-up material), Patricia “Ms. Pat” Williams offers poignant and biting commentary on television’s yesteryear.
Styled from head to toe in the look of the time, punctuated by a circle skirt, the episode fades to black and white as the fictional Ms. Pat and her TV family — sons Brandon (Vince Swann) and Junebug (Theodore Barnes), daughters Janelle (Briyana Guadalupe) and Ashley (Brittany Inge), husband Terry (J. Bernard Calloway), and sister Denise (Tami Roman) — try to adapt to that era. But as both pregnancy and race, two topics Leave It to Beaver and its ilk never addressed,...

Barbra Streisand has released her first song in six years, titled “Love Will Survive” — and it’s her first work for an onscreen project in 12 years, since she herself last appeared in a movie, 2012’s “The Guilt Trip.”
“Love Will Survive,” composed by Hans Zimmer and Kara Talve, will be Streisand’s end title anthem for the credits of Peacock and Sky limited series “The Tattooist of Auschwitz,” based on the WWII-set novel of the same name. Melanie Lynskey portrays real-life author Heather Morris, who interviewed Holocaust survivor Lali Sokolov (Harvey Keitel) about meeting his future wife Gina (Anna Próchniak) in a concentration camp. The novel is inspired by the real-life love story of Lali and Gita Sokolov, who met while prisoners in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp during the Holocaust. He had been ordered to tattoo serial numbers on prisoners’ arms.
This is Streisand’s first recording for a TV series.

Barbra Streisand has revealed that she has no plans to return to the big screen anytime soon.
The Egot winner, who hasn’t starred in a movie in more than a decade, recently told People Magazine that the movie-making process can be tiring.
“I mean, it was 2009 that I was fighting for the rights to play Gypsy,” she said. “In other words, it gets exhausting, trying to come up with the structure of the movie and then have it not happen.”
But Streisand admitted that if she could have made her movies, she “never would’ve written a book. I had such good movies to make, meaning they were about things I cared about, very interesting subjects.”
The actress-singer has tried to get several projects made over the years, including The Normal Heart, Gypsy and a sequel to The Way We Were. She recently said on The Howard Stern Show...

Martin Scorsese is dishing on the actors he hasn’t worked with, but would have liked to.
The 80-year-old Oscar-winning director has been helming movies for decades and has worked with many, many actors over the years, with lots of A-list stars wanting to work with him.
However many big names that he has done films with, there are still some that he wishes he did work with, and only one of them is still alive.
Keep reading to find out who…
While appearing at the Montclair Film Festival, at a filmmaker tribute to him on Friday (October 27), Martin opened up that he wishes he had worked with Spencer Tracy, Barbara Stanwyck and Marlon Brando, as well as Barbara Streisand.
Streisand is the only living actor on the list, but she hasn’t done any acting in about ten years, with her last on-screen appearance being in the movie The Guilt Trip.

In the world of the Emmy Awards, straight-to-streaming movies are considered “TV Movies,” which is how Predator sequel Prey was able to score an “Outstanding TV Movie” nomination at this year’s ceremony. Dan Trachtenberg’s one-shot spinoff movie, in fact, was nominated for Six Emmy Awards in total this year, and it’s not the only horror movie to get recognition.
Released last Halloween on Disney+, the decades-later spooky sequel Hocus Pocus 2 is also nominated for “Outstanding Television Movie” at the Emmy Awards this year!
In addition to that nomination, Hocus Pocus 2 has also been nominated in the “Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special” and “Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes” categories, the film scoring three nominations in total.

'90s kids have waited a long, long time for this one, but the time is finally upon us! "Hocus Pocus 2" is nearly here and we even have a first look at the long-awaited sequel to prove it. The original movie was released nearly 30 years ago and, curiously, was released smack dab in the middle of summer by Disney, despite being a clear Halloween season film. That did it precisely no favors and it bombed at the box office. But "Hocus Pocus found new life on home video and cable, making it a generational favorite. Because of that, the Sanderson Sisters are back to terrorize Salem once more.

In service to the director’s vision on a project, production designer Nelson Coates is an artistic pied piper. “You want to [construct] a visual arc and take people on that journey,” he says.

You can never quite predict what will happen when parents intrude on their kids’ lives, no matter what their ages — a fact of life that has inspired a rich subgenre of such films as “She’s Out of Control,” “Mother,” “The Guilt Trip” and last year’s surprisingly sweet “Blockers.” Based on the novel “Whatever Makes You Happy” by William Sutcliffe, director Cindy Chupack’s “Otherhood” follows three meddling mothers who travel to New York City to surprise their wayward adult sons with an unexpected visit, offers a welcome female-centered take on empty-nester syndrome in the process. Part guilt trip, part gentle ode to smothering mothers, it could be called “Why Don’t You Call Your Mother More Often: The Movie.” Despite a shaky third act, Chupack and company find great success by keeping the shenanigans grounded in a sense of pathos.

This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman is staying put at 20th Century Fox TV, signing a massive new five-year deal with the studio behind the hit NBC drama.
Under the pact, Fogelman will continue to help steer This Is Us, which is headed into its fourth season, and develop new series for the studio, now owned by Disney, through his Rhode Island Ave. Productions. (This Is Us has bot been renewed by NBC but that is considered a formality.)
Fogelman was one of the biggest names on 20th TV’s roster to come into play this year. It was important for the studio to step up to keep him and it did so. No one would comment but I hear Fogelman’s new deal is in the nine figures.

Barbra Streisand has come to the defense of Michael Jackson, even while clarifying that she “absolutely” believes the two men who accuse the pop superstar of sexually abusing them in the HBO documentary “Leaving Neverland.” Speaking to the Times, Streisand said Jackson was “very sweet, very childlike” the few times they met one another and that “his sexual needs were his sexual needs, coming from whatever childhood he has or whatever DNA he has.”
“You can say ‘molested,’ but those children, as you heard them say, they were thrilled to be there. They both married and they both have children, so it didn’t kill them,” she added.
As for whether she’s angry with the late singer, who died 10 years ago, Streisand described it as “a combination of feelings. I feel bad for the children. I feel bad for him. I blame, I guess, the parents, who would allow...

Veteran multi-camera comedy director Andy Ackerman and The Proposal helmer Anne Fletcher have been tapped to direct two of ABC’s recently ordered pilots from 20th Century Fox TV.
Ackerman will direct and executive produce Nana, a multi-cam hybrid starring and co-executive produced by Sons of Anarchy alum Katey Sagal, from writer Lon Zimmet, Ted Melfi and Kimberly Quinn’s Goldenlight Films, Alcon Entertainment, 20th Century Fox TV and ABC Studios.
Written by Lon Zimmet, Nana centers on an obsessive, overprotective dad, who after the death of his wife, is forced to invite his brash and bawdy mother-in-law – Nana (Sagal) – into his home to help raise the two granddaughters she barely knows.
Zimmet executive produces with Melfi and Quinn for Goldenlight Films, and Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson and Laura Lancaster for Alcon Entertainment. Sagal is a co-executive producer.

Nearly a decade after “The Proposal” made over $160M at the domestic box office — the Sandra Bullock- and Ryan Reynolds-starring charmer still ranks as the seventh highest-grossing rom-com of all-time — director Anne Fletcher is going the route of so many successful filmmakers before her: she’s stopped relying on studio gigs to carry her career. Between her new Netflix feature, “Dumplin’,” and a burgeoning television career, Fletcher has stayed nimble as ever, emblematic of an industry that so often forces its creators to evolve quickly.
After the monstrous success of “The Proposal,” the kind of box office juggernaut that made so many portend that the studio rom-com wasn’t dead after all, Fletcher helmed two more studio offerings (Paramount’s “The Guilt Trip” and Warner Bros.’ “Hot Pursuit”). Neither film enjoyed the success of their predecessor, and the same could be said of the rom-com, which did not...

"And that's when I decided - enough is enough." Netflix has unveiled the dazzling official trailer for an indie dramatic comedy titled Dumplin', the latest from filmmaker Anne Fletcher. The film is about a teen named Willowdean, the plus-size daughter of a former pageant queen who decides to enter the beauty contest herself in protest, revolutionizing the pageant and their small Texas town. Jennifer Aniston stars with Danielle Macdonald (who also appeared in Patti Cake$) as Will. The cast includes Odeya Rush, Dove Cameron, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Luke Benward, Harold Perrineau, Joshua Eads-Brown, Sam Pancake, and Dan Finnerty. This looks like a joyously energetic and spirited film, better than I was expecting it to look. Might be worth a watch when it's released. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Anne Fletcher's Dumplin', direct from Netflix's YouTube: Dumplin' follows an outspoken plus-sized teenage girl named Willowdean (Danielle Macdonald), who’s...

This Is Us is such a heartwarming, touching family saga, it’s confounding that the creator cannot bring the same qualities to feature film. Crazy Stupid Love was good and he delivered generic studio fare like The Guilt Trip and Last Vegas, but Danny Collins and Life Itself lack understanding of drama and human beings at all. Life Itself relies on dramatic events that feel blatantly contrived and unnatural. It’s shocking because This Is Us reveals stories like this all the time and feels organic. The story of Randall being left at the fire station or William’s letters with Rebecca are […]

Brett Cullen has joined the cast of Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” replacing Alec Baldwin as Thomas Wayne — aka Bruce Wayne’s father.
Baldwin was on board to play the role in the origin movie, but had to drop out at the last minute due to scheduling conflicts. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron, and Frances Conroy round out the cast.
“I’m no longer doing that movie,” Baldwin told USA Today in late August. “I’m sure there are 25 guys who can play that part.”
Phillips is co-writing and directing the highly anticipated Warner Bros. movie, which is set to bow on Oct. 4, 2019. He revealed a first look at Phoenix, before he becomes the infamous Batman villain, on Sunday. He captioned the image with just “Arthur.”

We've been fans of Atypical since it aired its first season that focused on the dating life of 18-year-old autistic teenager Sam Gardner. It's one of our favorite teen dramas, and we're so glad it was renewed. The show just debuted its second season on Netflix, and the plot lines continue to push envelopes and tug at heartstrings.
The stellar cast is nothing short of impressive, with Keir Gilchrist starring as Sam, '80s icon Jennifer Jason Leigh (Fast Times of Ridgemont High) starring as Sam's mother, and Michael Rapaport (Friends) playing Sam's father. But while we were marathon-watching the latest season, we couldn't help but notice a familiar face playing new character Ms. Whitaker. Casey Wilson has been in the film and television game for years now, so even if you couldn't place her face, you've likely been a fan of her work for quite some time.

Seth Rogen‘s “Hilarity for Charity” annual fundraising event has been going on since 2012, but the most recent installment, recorded live in front of an audience last month in Los Angeles is its most high profile yet. Filmed over the course of one night and released this week on Netflix, it’s a variety show with some of the biggest names in the comedy world. With a deceptive amount of ambition and a strong, varied lineup, it’s a strange, sweet jumble of comedy that’s unabashedly a perfect fit for the algorithm.
The time may already have come when it’s impossible for anything comedy-related on Netflix to not take a swipe at someone in the Netflix family. After years of expansion and acquisition and with a renewed effort to draw new creators under his umbrella, it seems like at this point Netflix will always be in a position...

Howard Stern Show regular Seth Rogen was on the show this morning to promote his forthcoming R-rated animated raunch-fest Sausage Party, and reliably dropped a few choice anecdotes in the process, with trademark guffaw in tow. Here are five big highlights from the conversation. 1. He was "hurt" by Knocked Up co-star Katherine Heigl's criticisms of the 2007 film but is nevertheless sympathetic to the actress, who discussed her awkward run-in with Rogen during an appearance on the show back in April. Heigl's critical comments about the Judd Apatow-directed hit -- which saw her slamming the film as "sexist," among other things -- made Rogen feel as if his "trust" was "betrayed" by his co-star, whom he says could have voiced her concerns "at any moment" during filming. "We have a very open process. You have the ability to say anything at any moment," said Rogen. "'I don't like this scene.

2016 is coming. No matter what your mood is when the clock strikes midnight, we've got your streaming needs covered for that cold, cold morning of January 1. Lighthearted acceptance: "Meet the Fockers" (Netflix) I prefer to think of "Meet the Fockers" as a tag team Celebrity Deathmatch: Robert De Niro and Blythe Danner vs. Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand. Whose wisecracks land hardest? Whose anxiety-inducing jabs make Greg Focker tweak hardest? It's hard to say. I feel like conventional wisdom tells you this movie is inferior to the original, but Dustin and Barbra are wholly original, hilarious characters. Along with "The Guilt Trip," this makes two times Barbra Streisand has played believable, quirky Jewish mothers who don't seem all that much like Barbra Streisand. Unthinkable devastation: "We Need to Talk About Kevin" (Netflix) Tilda Swinton's kid is a born psychopath. I know we're supposed to find his wrath horrifying,...

Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara are on the lam in Hot Pursuit, an oestrogen-fuelled odd couple comedy that runs out of steam very early on. Director Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses, The Guilt Trip) drags it out with one or two jokes that revolve around the height difference and the fact that both women talk kinda funny. That's a shame because the chemistry between the two is fairly good, and perhaps could have caught fire with better material.
Witherspoon gamely offers herself as the unsexy one, a neurotic by-the-book cop in sensible shoes who is tasked with hauling state's witness, Daniella Riva (played in typical hypersexual style by Vergara) across Texas - along with her trunkful of designer heels.
