Back in September, it was announced that Evan Peters (Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), Anthony Ramos (Twisters), Ashton Kutcher (That ’70s Show), and Jeremy Pope (Hollywood) are on board to star in The Beauty, the latest show that American Horror Story and Monster co-creator Ryan Murphy has in the works at FX. Now, Variety has broken the news that Rebecca Hall of Godzilla x Kong: New Empire has also joined the cast.
Filming on The Beauty is already underway. FX has given the show an 11 episode order. While the series is based on the Image Comics series of the same name by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley, plot and character details are being kept under wraps. So for now, we can only go by the description of the comic book series to get an idea of what the show is going to be like: Modern society is obsessed with outward beauty.

The infamous Satanic Panic is often referred to as the 20th century equivalent of the Salem Witch Trials, with innocent heavy metal fans and Dungeons & Dragons players being accused of worshipping Satan while apocalyptic conspiracy theories about the rise of the Antichrist and the supposed “Mark of the Beast” ran rampant amongst radical believers. However, what a lot of people don’t know is that horror cinema played an accidentally crucial role in inspiring this regrettable era of prejudice and misinformation.
In fact, there are a handful of specific horror films that informed most of the fears we now associate with the Satanic Panic, with some of the most influential being Richard Donner’s 1977 classic The Omen and its numerous follow-ups. Despite playing fast and loose with their religious influences, these movies would go on to popularize then-obscure bits of biblical lore (like the Satanic connotations of “666”) that most...

Sydney Sweeney‘s second film of 2024 is finally here, let’s hope that it doesn’t turn into a disaster like the first one. Produced by Sweeney herself, Immaculate is a psychological horror film and it follows the story of a young nun who joins a convent in the Italian countryside. Her quiet life quickly turns into a nightmare because of the horrific secrets hidden in the convent. Directed by Michael Mohan, Immaculate also stars Simona Tabasco, Benedetta Porcaroli, and Álvaro Morte. So, if you loved Sweeney’s horror film here are some similar movies you should check out next.
The Convent
Co-written and directed by Paul Hyett, the 2018 film British horror film titled The Convent gives a similar atmosphere to Sweeney’s Immaculate. The Convent tells us the story of a group of young women seeking refuge from the turmoil of World War II in an isolated convent in the countryside.

In "Avatar: The Last Airbender," Fire Nation Prince Zuko's most distinguishing feature is the red burn scar on the left side of his face, given to him by his father, Fire Lord Ozai, after Zuko "dishonored" their family. Zukos' growth over the series manifests in acceptance of the scar. As he says in the season 2 finale ("The Crossroads of Destiny"), "I used to think this scar marked me. The mark of the banished prince cursed to chase the Avatar forever. But lately ... I've realized that I'm free to determine my own destiny, even if I'll never be free of my mark."
The scar isn't just there to remind Zuko of his pain or scare the young audience. There's some obvious symbolism too; Zuko literally has a good side and a bad side. It's like Two-Face from Batman (whether played by Tommy Lee Jones or Aaron Eckhart), where a bifurcated face reflects a split soul.

On November 13, 1974, at 112 Ocean Ave. in Amityville, New York, a young man named Ronald DeFeo woke up in the middle of the night, took up a shotgun, and went from room to room in his home, systematically murdering six members of his family. DeFeo was apprehended by the police. At first, DeFeo claimed the murders were mob-related, but he later confessed to committing the crimes himself. He was sentenced to 25 years to life for his crimes. DeFeo died in prison in 2021.
DeFeo's murders became notorious with the publication of Jay Anson's nonfiction book "The Amityville Horror" in 1977. After the killings, the Lutz family moved into 112 Ocean Ave., and they claimed to experience a panoply of paranormal phenomena. Flies mobbed the building, and the entire Lutz family reported hearing eerie voices. George Lutz, the family patriarch, claimed to be possessed by a demonic presence that was driving him to kill his family.

“Nothing is what it seems.” A seemingly offhand remark made early in Don’t Look Now is slowly revealed to be the theme around which the film revolves.
Nicolas Roeg’s directorial efforts may not have always connected with audiences immediately, but his impressionistic approach has aged like fine wine. Don’t Look Now, in particular, was decades ahead of its time upon its release in 1973.
The screenplay — written by Allan Scott and Chris Bryant (The Awakening), based on a 1971 short story by Daphne du Maurier — analyzes the psychological effects of trauma through a horror lens; a motif we’ve seen explored many times over in recent years, from Ari Aster’s filmography to David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy.
Following the tragic drowning of their young daughter, architect John Baxter and bereaved wife Laura travel from their English country home to Venice to oversee the restoration of a church. After a...

Live or die. The choice is yours. But if you reach ten sequels, shit’s probably going to get weird. This week, the Saw franchise returns with Saw X. Which means people really like to see other people tortured and I’m judging every single one of us. It also means the Saw franchise has done something quite special. Not many horror franchises make it this long. Not even Freddy himself has crossed the tenth movie finish line. Scream. Evil Dead. Child’s Play. Paranormal Activity. The Conjuring. Even when you include the spinoffs, none of them have hit ten films!
But Saw X isn’t the first horror franchise to reach that landmark. So, let’s play a game and take a look at how other franchises have fared in their milestone tenth installments…
Jason X (2001)
Walk into one room and bemoan Jason X and everyone will laugh and agree.

Paris has been the backdrop to many a great romance, and in Heartstopper, that’s no different. A school trip to the French capital in season two is the site of an instant connection between boy…. and bookshop. When Isaac Henderson sees Shakespeare and Co. on the banks of the River Seine, it’s love at first sight. He’s punch-drunk in its aisles, wandering around with wide eyes, balancing an ever-growing stack of titles in his arms and basking in the literary sunshine.
It’s not as though Isaac didn’t come to Paris pre-stocked with books (it’s a good job the schools travelled by coach and not air – you could hardly ask this teen to load up a Kindle). The boy’s never seen without a paperback. Reading is part-obsession, part comfort-blanket to him. Books, as they are for a lot of us, are his shield against the world.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
We’ve reached the last of the studio Amityville films with writer/director Franck Khalfoun’s Amityville: The Awakening (2017). It’s taken this editorial series a while to reach this milestone because we’re going through the Amityville films chronologically, though anyone familiar with the troubled production history of the film could feasibly argue this should have been covered back among the 2014 films (when the film was originally filmed) or 2016 (when reshoots were done and the film was originally scheduled for release).
In addition to those 2016 reshoots – the results of poor audience scores – the film was derailed due to its ties to the Weinstein/#MeToo movement. It was eventually dumped onto Google Play for free in late 2017.
Putting aside the scheduling challenges,...

If you’re someone who considers themself a foodie (and I totally am), chances are there was a moment in the last few years when you had The Awakening. It may have been when the waiter was describing the veal marrow with beet foam served with baby lettuces from New Zealand. It may have been when you were eating the red snapper that was cooked halfway through, like a rare steak, and you thought, “I love sushi, I love cooked fish, but I’m not sure this is really the best of both worlds.” It may have been when you saw the bill.
Whatever the trigger, that was the moment you looked up from your plate and realized that high-end foodie culture has become a serious annoyance. It’s gotten too fussy, too pricey, too full of itself, too not filling, too avant-garde and conceptual, too tied to The Salvation of the Planet,...

Doctor Who! The children’s own show that adults adore.
Doctor Who, as a format, requires an intrinsic joyfulness in its stories to be so adored. If adventures become too continually grim, or not sufficiently fun, then ultimately there’ll be a tipping point where it becomes implausible for the story to continue. Why, ultimately, would the character keep travelling if they weren’t enjoying it? And even if they did, would this be something that would sustain a family audience?
It’s not that you can’t have darkness in Doctor Who, it’s just that it can’t be sustained and eventually something has to give. As such, there’s an inherent optimism in a lot of Doctor Who, even in episodes where it isn’t high in the mix. For the show to make sense, there has to be some hope that wrongs can be righted.

Tell Imelda Staunton her performance as the ultimate Harry Potter villain Dolores Umbridge traumatized you, and she couldn’t be more pleased. “Job done!” she declares with a laugh.
In her long and distinguished career, Staunton has played more than her share of sinners and saints, everything from Mrs. Lovett in “Sweeney Todd” to a literal fairy godmother in “Maleficent.” Still, most people likely remember her most from two wildly different characters, the malevolent Umbridge and the title role in “Vera Drake,” the embodiment of compassion and the role that earned her an Academy Award nomination for best actress.
The fact that she can play benevolent and sinister works to great effect in her latest film, “Amulet,” the feature writing and directing debut of actor Romola Garai. A horror film with roots in feminism, body horror and vengeance, the uneasy thriller tells the story of a former soldier (Alec Secareanu...

Waves roll up onto the shore. It’s a beautiful sight if the waves weren’t inviting the woman on the edge of the cliff to jump out and end her torment. The fear of being stuck in a loveless marriage, or even worse, unable to fulfill your own desires and dreams looms over the waves below. The woman doesn’t see a way out, that is until a stranger enters her life, calling her back with just a stare. The stranger watches her, staring at her beauty and air of sadness.
Like the slow and steady waves meeting the shore, writer and director Céline Sciamma has crafted a tale that slowly washes over viewers, evoking the tragic romanticism of Kate Chopin’s searing novel The Awakening. Instead of painting in broad strokes, Sciamma meticulously captures forbidden love through two pairs of eyes that say so much through just a series of looks.

While by no means a tell-all, Miss Americana, Taylor Swift's new Netflix documentary, opens up on topics the musician has long kept private, from her relationship with Joe Alwyn to her eating disorder. It's a political project as well, showcasing her growing commitment to speaking out against injustice. But as a long-time Swiftie who's excited about her political awakening, one moment in the documentary worried me: Taylor's confession about her aging stardom, particularly her acceptance that she probably doesn't have much time left as an artist. She seemingly nails down this message with "Only the Young," her new anthem about the power of the youth to enact change - to "run."
"Women in entertainment are discarded in an elephant graveyard by the time they're 35."
"We do exist in this society where women in entertainment are discarded in an elephant graveyard by the time they're 35," Taylor candidly narrated. She explained...

[Editors’ note: The following post contains spoilers for the “Game of Thrones” series finale, “The Iron Throne.”]
The Iron Throne was officially destroyed by dragon fire in the series finale of “Game of Thrones,” but that didn’t mean a new leader of the Six Kingdoms wouldn’t be named. Following the death of Daenerys Targaryen and the imprisonment of her murderer, Jon Snow, the surviving leaders of Westeros joined Tyrion in King’s Landing to figure out who should rule Westeros. In a surprise move, the honor went to none other than Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright). Tyrion proposed the idea, saying Bran had a story the people of Westeros would believe in. Bran made Tyrion his hand and agreed to let Sansa rule over an independent North (hence the Seven Kingdoms are now the Six Kingdoms).

Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight is tackling a series of Charles Dickens TV adaptations, starting with A Christmas Carol, for the BBC and FX.
A Christmas Carol is coming to FX and the BBC as a three-part miniseries. While that might not initially sound like the most groundbreaking news, seeing as the original 1843 novella by Charles Dickens has been adapted countless times in every conceivable medium, there’s a (non-Oliver) twist here. This version will be brought to you by the creator of Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight.
As we first learned back in November 2017, the BBC is teaming with Knight to adapt a slate of Dickens miniseries, starting with this year’s kickoff, A Christmas Carol, which will star Guy Pearce as Ebenezer Scrooge, the bah-humbugging holiday-hating protagonist who famously undergoes time-travelling therapy, courtesy of three spirits. Knight wrote the script and serves as executive producer, with Nick Murphy...

And so it was written, that a beast would come in the form of film, and that film would beget others due to profit, and those films would spread across the horror landscape to mostly whispered calls of, “meh”. Not for this little demon, however; as all of The Omen films work for me in one way or another, bringing us to number four and the first for the small screen, Omen IV: The Awakening (1991). The script gets flipped, yet it’s more of the same, and I’m not complaining.
Originally broadcast as part of the Fox Night at the Movies, Omen IV was trounced by ABC’ MacGyver on one side, CBS’ Murphy Brown/Designing Women on the other, and NBC’s Fresh Prince/Blossom on the other other. And as expected, no sins lain upon the critics were forgiven. This thing got roasted on the coals of Hell itself.

The budget for the China remake of the hit 1984 Singaporean television drama “The Awakening,” could exceed $40 million, according to production executives at Ghy Culture and Media.
Ghy, a China-backed Singaporean production outfit, recently signed a licensing deal with national broadcaster Mediacorp for the remake rights to selected library titles. “The Awakening,” a 60 episode period epic following the first generations of Chinese immigrants in Singapore, is planned for a mid-2019 production start.
The remarks were made on the sidelines of the launch of principle photography on Ghy’s first production under the licensing deal, “The Little Nyonya,” held at Pinewood Studios Iskandar on Thursday. The $20.5 million, 40 episode series “Nyonya” is a co-production with China streaming giant iQIYI, and Changxin Pictures.

Why do we respond to some filmmakers and not others?
I’m a pretty film literate guy, so I’ve seen my share of both classics and avant-garde movies and understand both the films that influenced them and those on which they had a big influence. I don’t mind being challenged or taken outside of my comfort zone. But the older I get and the more movies I see, the more I resign myself to the notion that I like what I like and that I shouldn’t try to fight those feelings in the interest of appearing “highbrow.” If it comes down to a classy mess or good trash, I’ll take the good trash any day.
This brings me to the two newest Blu-ray releases from Vestron Video’s Collector’s Series line: Ken Russell’s 1986 effort Gothic and the 1990 sci-fi actioner Class of 1999, written and directed by Mark L. Lester.

101 Films have announced they are set to release Steven Pullen’s The Ballerina, an American horror film in the tradition of The Forest and The Awakening that takes the haunted forest sub-genre to terrifying new heights, on DVD and digital download next month.
On the run from Child Protective Services, Glenn and his nine-year- old daughter, Sophia, disappear into the swampy Virginia backwoods. In hiding they live off the land in a tattered tent, keeping a safe distance from other homeless outcasts and the gangs of rednecks who occupy the forest. The tragedy that has brought father and daughter to this desperate place has also torn a crater-like hole in their shattered lives, leaving the girl defenceless against nightly hauntings by ghosts who encircle the tent and breathe threats to carry her away. With Halloween upon us, we picked 25 appropriately spooky movies...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.

25. The Awakening (2011)
This BBC film is set in the 1920s and is an amalgam of several ghost stories (lifting certain scenes almost verbatim from Haunted). However, what it lacks in originality it makes up for in elegance; it’s worth...

Kate Harwood, Oona King among executives to express support for more regulation.
BFI board member Baroness Oona King and former BBC drama head Kate Harwood have backed recent calls for diversity quotas to be attached to the UK film and TV tax relief.
Speaking at Mbi’s Media Production Show in London during a session on gender equality, panellists including King, Euston Films managing director Harwood and War & Peace and The Awakening producer Julia Stannard expressed support for building quotas into the UK’s film and high end drama incentives.
At Screen and Broadcast’s Media Summit earlier this week Ken Loach producer Rebecca O’Brien suggested making tax credits dependent on “certain diversity boxes being ticked”.
Former BBC head of drama Harwood said: “Rebecca’s [O’Brien’s] suggestion about tax breaks and diversity is such a good idea. I think it’s a bit of a no brainer.”
Stannard agreed: “Our industry is largely a freelance industry…There is...
