Duncan Jones made an incredible debut with his Sam Rockwell-starring sci-fi, Moon. However, his follow-ups haven’t collected as much acclaim with the Groundhog Day-on-a-train thriller Source Code, his step into the big-budget franchise world with Warcraft, and his high-concept Netflix sci-fi, Mute. For years, Jones has been developing an adaptation of the comic Rogue Trooper, which is to be an animated feature. The production has been rolling along, and Variety has revealed the cast of actors that Jones has been able to compile for the film.

Aneurin Barnard, Hayley Atwell and Jack Lowden are reportedly said to be the main cast in the lead roles for the science-fiction animated film. Barnard, whose credits include The Goldfinch and Dunkirk, is set to star as the eponymous Rogue Trooper. The animated film, which is being created with Epic’s 3D tool Unreal Engine 5, was adapted by Jones from the comic book published by 2000 Ad, home to “Judge Dredd,” “Halo Jones” and “Sláine.” “Rogue Trooper,” produced by Rebellion and Liberty Films, has wrapped principal photography at Rebellion Film Studios in the U.K. The film is set to be finished next year.

Barnard stars as the eponymous Rogue Trooper. Cast alongside him are Atwell, Lowden, Daryl McCormack and Reece Shearsmith.

One of 2023’s defining breakouts, the Amazon Freevee series is the crown jewel of an ascendant hybrid genre sometimes referred to as docu-comedy. At the end of January this year, America met Cunk properly for the first time when new show Cunk on Earth arrived on Netflix US. A documentary series follow-up to 2018’s Cunk on Britain, it’s an ambitious attempt to sum up the history of humankind in five half-hour episodes, made even more ambitious by the fact that it’s presented by a total moron.

The Last of Us walked away from the Banff Rockie Awards with the Program of the Year gong.

Season one of HBO series, which stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay, was filmed in Alberta, Canada — the province where the Banff World Media Festival is held, and was awarded at the 2023 Rockie Award Gala yesterday evening.

The Star Trek franchise’s TV legacy was honored with the Buffalo Rock Award, while Craig Robinson received the Peter Ustinov Comedy Award. Robinson is the exec producer and co-star of Peacock comedy Killing It, and was in Canada this week at the festival. Eternal Spring, a Canadian doc, took home the Grand Jury Prize.

Meanwhile, among the international winners was BBC series The Traitors UK, which won Best in Competition Series & Game Shows. The original Traitors format has often been credited with revitalizing the international formats market.

Euphoria and Welcome to Wrexham were among the winners at the 2023 Rockie Awards.

The Zendaya-led Euphoria was named best drama in the international program Monday night at the Banff World Media Festival. Welcome to Wrexham, which follows Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as they buy and learn to manage a Welsh football club, earned a Rockie trophy for best docuseries. And the Banff jury named The Patient as its best limited TV series.

The Rockie Awards, which traditionally turns into a shoot-out between American and British TV producers, saw the U.K. game show Taskmaster, which assigns simple comedic and bizarre tasks to regular contestants, named best comedy and variety program. The best comedy prize for an English language show went to the U.K. mockumentary Cunk on Earth.

One of British TV's biggest nights happened on Sunday, with the BAFTA TV Awards. And it was a good time to be anyone associated with Derry Girls, Bad Sisters or a particular reality TV show that revolves around betrayal.

Among the winners, Bad Sisters' Anne-Marie Duff scored the first performance trophy for someone from an Apple TV+ series, while the show itself took home drama series. Ben Whishaw won Leading Actor, Drama for This Is Going To Hurt., while The Traitors nabbed two awards, both in its category and for host Claudia Winkleman in Entertainment Performance.

It was a big night for Irish talent at this year’s British version of the Emmys, the BAFTA TV Awards, which were doled out at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Hosted by Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett, two Irish series — – “Bad Sisters” and “Derry Girls” — won a pair of prizes as did the telefilm “I Am Ruth.”

“Derry Girls” won Best Scripted Comedy for its fourth and final season, which was a lovely parting gift for writer and creator Lisa McGee. The show beat out “Ghosts,” “Big Boys,” and “Am I Being Unreasonable?” although the latter did pick up the prize for Best Comedy Actor for 14-year-old Lenny Rush. He edged out Matt Berry (“What We Do In The Shadows”), Joseph Gilgun (“Brassic”), Stephen Merchant (“The Outlaws”), Jon Pointing (“Big Boys”), and Daniel Radcliffe (“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”).

The 2023 BAFTA TV Awards took place at Royal Festival Hall in London on Sunday evening, honoring the best performances in British television in 2022. The ceremony, which was hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan, paid tribute to an eclectic mix of popular British shows and international hits.

The third and final season of “Derry Girls” was a big winner, with Lisa McGee’s Netflix-distributed series winning Best Scripted Comedy and Best Female Performance In a Comedy Program for Siobhán Mcsweeney.

I Am Ruth, Bad Sisters, Derry Girls and The Traitors were the top winners at the 2023 BAFTA Television Awards on Sunday.

Kate Winslet won the BAFTA for leading actress for her role in I Am Ruth, which also won for best single drama. Bad Sisters took home the award for best drama series, as well as Anne-Marie Duff received the award for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Grace Williams in the series.

Siobhán McSweeney won the honor for best female performance in a comedy programme for Derry Girls. The show also received the award for best scripted comedy.

In addition, Ben Whishaw won the BAFTA for leading actor for his portrayal of Adam Kay in the autobiographical drama This is Going to Hurt, and Adeel Akhtar won the supporting actor award for his role in the crime drama Sherwood.

Updated: Kate Winslet and Ben Whishaw scooped the top acting prizes at the BAFTA TV Awards in London this afternoon.

The pair won in the Leading Actress and Actor categories for I Am Ruth and This is Going to Hurt respectively, with I Am Ruth also winning for Single Drama.

Adam Kay’s Whishaw-starring BBC/AMC drama This is Going to Hurt was defeated in the Best Mini-Series category to BBC Three breakout Mood, in one of the night’s biggest surprises.

Meanwhile, Apple TV+ drama Bad Sisters won the streamer’s first BAFTA TV performance awards ever for Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actress Anne-Marie Duff. Creator Sharon Horgan used her acceptance speech to express “solidarity with [her] WGA brothers and sisters” and a colleague of Horgan’s told Deadline that she had recently joined the picket line in Los Angeles.

The ceremony, which took place at the Royal Festival Hall in London, was hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan.

Winslet won the prize for best leading actress for her turn in “I Am Ruth,” which also starred her real-life daughter Mia Threapleton. The duo also took to the stage to accept the award for best single drama, with Threapleton tearing up. “We did this together kiddo,” Winslet said as she accepted the leading actress award, adding: “There were days when it was agony for [Threapleton] to dig as deeply as she did and it took my breath away.”

Horgan, meanwhile, thanked her writers as she accepted the award for best drama on behalf of Apple TV+ series “Bad Sisters,” which also saw Anne-Marie Duff take home...

British Academy voters have spread the small-screen love across the 2023 BAFTA TV awards, with a broad selection of shows landing nominations.

Announced March 22, BBC/AMC comedy-drama This is Going to Hurt and BBC police drama The Responder lead the pack of nominees with six nods each, closely followed by Apple TV+ shows Bad Sisters and Slow Horses, Netflix’s The Crown and BBC/Amazon Western The English with five. Am I Being Unreasonable?, Big Boys, Somewhere Boy and Top Boy landed four nominations each. 128 programs in total were nominated.

While it’s a close race among the shows, among the networks, the BBC has a commanding lead with 81 nominations, followed by Channel 4 with 33, Netflix with 24, ITV with 19, Apple TV+ with 15, Sky with 14 and Disney+ with 8 nominations.

Among the names getting their first BAFTA TV nomination are several recognizable stars, including Gary Oldman for Slow Horses, Cillian Murphy for Peaky Blinders...

ABC is in negotiations with Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) to headline Motherland, a comedy pilot based on the British series. Written by Smolinski, Motherland centers on Julia (the role Kemper has been in talks for over the past several weeks), a working mom for whom nothing is working so she goes looking for her village. With the help of new friends Calvin (Soni) and Liz, Julia discovers she just might succeed at balancing work and parenting from time to time. This is a comedy for anybody who’s dropped their kids at school, breathed a sigh of relief…then realized it’s Sunday.

Spoofs are all about volume. Deliver enough punchlines and there are almost guaranteed to be duds — but if you get enough big laughs, viewers will be too busy wheezing and wiping away tears to notice.

With the possible exception of the Airplane! guys, nobody knows this better than Mel Brooks. There are jokes in Blazing Saddles that fall flat. You mostly don’t remember them, because so much of it is still a riot. And because so much of Dracula: Dead and Loving It is stagnant, the few punchlines that land are rarely mentioned.

Ted Lasso‘s Nick Mohammed and After Life‘s Diane Morgan have struck scripted development deals with BBC Studios.

The deals with comic actors and writers were unveiled at the BBC Studios Showcase today in London, and will see both stars develop and co-produce content with the BBC’s commercial wing. BBC Studios will sell the resulting content internationally.

Mohammed is known for playing Nate in Apple TV+’s Emmy series Ted Lasso opposite Jason Sudeikis and is also the creator, writer, executive producer and co-star of Sky comedy Intelligence, acting opposite David Schwimmer. On the feature side, he is starring alongside Jon Hamm and Tina Fey in the upcoming film Maggie Moore(s), directed by John Slattery.

He also performs a comedy character called Mr Swallow, who appears regularly on Channel 4 show 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

Morgan recently appeared in Netflix’s Ricky Gervais comedy-drama After Life.

“Cunk on Earth” star Diane Morgan and “Intelligence” creator Nick Mohammed have each inked independent deals with BBC Studios.

Both comedians, who act and write, have signed deals for development, co-production and distribution of new scripted material, which BBC Studios will rep and distribute internationally.

Mohammed is a double Emmy nominee who created and co-starred in “Intelligence” alongside “Friends” star David Schwimmer. He is perhaps best known for his role as Nate in “Ted Lasso” and will be seen in the upcoming feature “Maggie Moore(s)” opposite Jon Hamm and Tina Fey. Mohammed is also an associate of the Inner Magic Circle. Morgan recently had a hit with “Cunk on Earth” in which she starred as professional dim-wit Philomena Cunk. She is also known for comedy show “Mandy,” which she created, wrote and directed, and has starred in shows including “After Life” and “Motherland.”

Cunk on Earth is a BBC series directed by Christian Watt in which Philomena Cunk (played by Diane Morgan) asks questions which are sometimes uncomfortable, other times surrealistic and sometimes intelligent about inventions of Humanity and, how, centuries later, we have ended up the way we are today.

The screenplay has been written by Charlie Brooker among others, whom you are all familiar with (the guy from Black Mirror).

This is an interesting series that follows other batches of Cunk, which are a series that is a mix between educational series and entertainment that are ironic and atractive, above all, thanks to the presence of Diane Morgan who is just great with her British style that knows how to deliver this… irony.

The thing I appreciate most about Diane Morgan’s Philomena Cunk character, introduced as part of Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe current events mockumentary series, is that once you have a character with the name Philomena Cunk, do you actually need anything else?

It’s a perfect comedy character appellation, with an overly flowery first name and a perfectly terse last name that contains multiple comedy “K” sounds and will always be adjacent to a somewhat taboo — less so in the U.K. — dirty word.

Then you get the actual character herself. Cunk was first presented as a dim-bulb interviewer/commentator in three- to five-minute segments that were characterized by her ignorance and spotty research. But then, somehow, the character and concept were enlarged upon in a number of half-hour specials, and then in the BBC Two series Cunk on Britain. 2023 has arrived, and to kick off the new year Netflix has a number of new additions hitting the streaming service in January. New Year’s Day marks the launch of the new original limited series “Kaleidoscope,” with episodes presented to subscribers in random order leading up to the big finale. The show chronicles the events before, during and after a major heist, with Giancarlo Esposito leading the cast, and is designed to be watched (and enjoyed) in any order.

Another high-profile Netflix original in January is “You People,” a new comedy film co-written by Jonah Hill and Kenya Barris, with Hill starring opposite Eddie Murphy in a premise that evokes “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” as he vies for the approval of his girlfriend’s father so he can marry her. Actor, writer and director Diane Morgan is set to receive the Variety Outstanding Achievement Award, distributed in association with the Edinburgh TV Festival.

The honor, which is awarded as part of the Festival’s prestigious TV awards, is being awarded to the BAFTA-nominated star in recognition of her extensive body of work, which ranges from Ricky Gervais’ “After Life” to “Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe” and includes fan-favorite “Motherland.”

Morgan’s award will be paired with a wide-ranging conversation with Variety, taking place on Thursday, Aug. 25 at the festival. She will discuss her two-decades long career including highlights and challenges.

Born in Bolton, England, Morgan got her start in Peter Kay’s “Phoenix Nights” before going on to win critical acclaim for her comedy, which includes roles in “Death to 2020” and “Death to 2021,” the BBC Studios comedy drama “Inside No 9” and her own BBC comedy series “Mandy,” which Morgan wrote,...
