It was filmed in a converted garage and other locations around the director's home in West Los Angeles, CA on Friday, April 3 and Saturday, April 4, 2010. The door with the window was custom made to look like a commercial janitor's closet door.
The school hallway is a photograph which we enlarged and placed behind the window, so it appeared the Zombies were in a school hallway.
The "Retractable Zombie Jaw" was designed by director James Tuverson, inspired by an earlier design by make-up artist Caryn Coblio. Blood effects were executed by make-up artist Genevieve Lamb. There has been some interest in mass-producing the Zombie Jaws as a children's toy!
The short was written in early January, 2010. Pre-production in earnest began 6 weeks before shooting. Post-production was 8 weeks after shooting.
That's a famous photograph of Hunter S. Thompson, well-known for originating "gonzo" journalism, a style of reporting where the journalist gets so involved in the story he becomes an important character. Thompson lived hard and died by a self-inflicted gunshot to the head in 2005. His unique, balls-out approach and reputation as an anti-authority rebel would have made him a suitable hero of teenage school paper journalist Ralph.
