In the series premiere of Still Star Crossed, titled "In Fair Verona, Where We Lay Our Scene," a doomed love affair sets the stage for a modern sequel to a classic tale.
If you aren't familiar with William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, you should probably stop reading and go pick up a copy. At the very least, rent Baz Luhrmann's adaptation, which stays true to the Bard's prose, and you get to stare at Leonardo DiCaprio for a couple of hours. We won't be rehashing the plot here since the show's creators assume that their audience knows the story of Shakespeare's ill-fated twosome, first kept apart by a bitter family feud and then by death.

Chicago – The familiar story of the “star crossed lovers” by William Shakespeare, “Romeo and Juliet,” has been given as many interpretations over the years as there are stars in the sky. The Lyric Opera of Chicago presents the operatic French version, with a bright and venerate staging.
Play Rating: 4.0/5.0
There are many duets in this opera, as can be expected, and the two vocalists – Joseph Calleja and Susannah Phillips – are up to the task of portraying the title characters with energetic and purposeful stage personas. The famous couple come to life, and the vocal actors provide them something extra – an authentic sense of true love, and all the fate that this love creates. “Romeo and Juliet” is a tragedy in the Shakespeare canon, but the Lyric Opera production generates a hopeful sense of “tis better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all” (kudos to another British poet,...

Ben Elton's David Mitchell-starring Shakespeare sitcom - Upstart Crow - will return next year...
As part of the 400th-anniversary-of-Shakespeare's-death celebrations earlier this year, BBC Two found some success - 2 million viewers on average over six episodes - with Ben Elton's David Mitchell-starring Bard-based sitcom, Upstart Crow.
As such, the Beeb has gone ahead and ordered a second series of the show. Six more 30-minute episodes and a Christmas special will arrive on our screens next year.
In terms of plot, CultBox reports that Upstart Crow series 2 "will see Marlowe take a spy trip to meet Two Gentlemen In Verona, while Will and Anne’s lodger turns out to be a Jesuit assassin with his sights set on the Queen."
David Mitchell had this to say: “I’m thrilled that we’ll be making a second series of Upstart Crow, but sad that my favourite part of the creative process – the quote for the press release – is now over.”
Ben Elton added this: “Making a sitcom for the BBC is the holy grail of British comedy writing. I am absolutely thrilled that Upstart Crow has earned a second series and am sorry for some of the things I thought about the Bard while studying for my English Lit O Level.”
And the BBC's comedy commissioning controller Shane Allen chimed in with this: “What with the brilliant response to Ben’s re-imagination of Will Shakespeare’s world and the uniquely entertaining cast, it would be madness not to bring Upstart Crow back for a second series.”
More news as we hear it.

Spoilers for a 400-plus year old play, but Romeo and Juliet both die at the end of William Shakespeare's tragedy. But if you think a little thing like death is going to stop mega-producer Shonda Rhimes from developing a sequel series, you've got another thing comin'.
Variety reports that Rhimes — who's known for Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Scandal, and How To Get Away With Murder — is producing a TV adaptation of Still Star-Crossed, Melinda Taub's 2013 book that is described like this:
Romeo and Juliet are gone. Will love live on? Despite the glooming peace that's settled on Verona after the recent tragedy, Montagues and Capulets are brawling in the streets. Faced with more bloody battles, Prince Escalus concludes that the only way to truly marry the fortunes of these two families is to literally marry them together. Everyone is skeptical, but none more so than the pair selected,...

If Hollywood is going to keep bringing William Shakespeare's classic romance Romeo and Juliet back to the big screen, then that means that they are going to have to approach it from absolutely every creative angle imaginable. In the last few years alone we've seen multiple examples of this, but now another one is coming down the pipe - and this one is apparently being made in the style of Zack Snyder's 300. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures is now in talks to pick up Verona, a new film inspired by the aforementioned classic tale of star-crossed lovers. The project is being based on a spec script written by Neil Widener and Gavin James, and Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent) is attached to produce. Exact details of how the new approach will work are reportedly being kept tightly under wraps, but the trade report says that...

Sony Pictures is in final negotiations to acquire the script for "Verona," which is a re-telling of William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." The title refers to the city in the story, which is the setting of the movie. How this version will be different is still unclear, but the classic love story will look similar to "300," which was developed using mostly green screens to tell the story of a battle between Greeks and Persians. The script for "Verona" is written by Neil Widener and Gavin James. Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent) is attached to produce.

Because the world is obsessed with mashing things up, it's time for the world of William Shakespeare's classic tragedy Romeo & Juliet to get blended with the style of Zack Snyder's adaptation of the graphic novel 300. That's how a new project called Verona has been described as THR reports Sony Pictures just picked up the project based on a spec script written by freshman writing duo Neil Widener & Gavin James. While specific details are being kept under wraps at this time, the basic premise will see the iconic story of two star-crossed lovers from feuding families with the stylization of 300. This...is...unnecessary! Considering how Baz Luhrmann updated the Shakespearean tale (while keeping his writing style) in the 90s, it's not hard to see how this story can be told any number of ways (it's been done countless times before). But for some reason this just seems like it's just too much.

Sony Pictures is in final negotiations to pick up "Verona," a spec script reimagining of William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" by Neil Widener and Gavin James.
The story is set to re-tell the story of the two star-crossed lovers from rival Italian families through a lens of an "epic, 300-style world" which would indicate plenty of green screen and hyper stylized visuals.
Further details about the script are being kept under wraps. Joe Roth is attached to produce.

In the Stage Door series we look at current theatrical productions with our cinematic eye. Here's Jose on Romeo & Juliet
Some time within the last 14 days, I subjected myself to three versions of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet playing in NYC. "Subjected?" you ask, well dear reader, each of them was perhaps more horrifying than the previous, leading me to ask if I wasn't an unwitting participant in some Shakespeare-meets-Halloween project. However in the name of scientific research I've come back with some results.
The versions in question are...
1) a Broadway update (the first in over four decades) starring Condola Rashad and Orlando Bloom as the infamous lovers from Verona.
2) a new film (written by Julian Fellowes) starring Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet and Damian Lewis as her dad
3) an off-Broadway version with Elizabeth Olsen and newcomer Julian Cihi as the title characters.

Shakespeare sure knew how to talk to the ladies. How else would you let a woman know how tender your ass is by the way the hairs tickle it?
Yep, surprise, dude wrote that. You probably just didn't quite catch it through all the thees and thous.
The romance (complete with sneaky backdoor sex jokes) lives on with the newest adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet," in theaters this Friday. The movie, of course, tells the classic tragic tale of two star-crossed lovers who end up taking their lives in the name of love due to their feuding families.
However, this latest adaptation, which stars Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld, won't be your typical Shakespearean take: The traditional dialogue that we read in his original plays won't be used (so much for a classic "Shakespearean experience") and the movie wasn't shot in the story's original setting of Verona, Italy. Do we need new Romeo and Juliet and Great Expectations film adaptations? In a word – sort of. This fall brings two new film adaptations of classic works of drama and romance and seriously funny character names (Havisham? Come on), just in time for high school students the world over to have a shiny new version of their assigned reading to watch on the big screen (sorry, books). Mike Newell tackles Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations” with his new take on the enduring novel, a “faithful” adaptation of the 1860 book about terrible, terrible, just terrible people and the havoc that class warfare can wreck on young love, which is set to hit theaters in November. Before that, however, we’ll be getting yet another new Romeo and Juliet film this October, this one by Carlo Carlei, who has reportedly maintained the Renaissance era Verona setting of William Shakespeare’s most famous play, while...

It's a tale as old as time, but the newest version of William Shakespeare's “Romeo and Juliet” comes with a bit of “Downton Abbey” and “Gossip Girl” flavor. The Julian Fellowes-penned script sticks closely to the classic -- no gunfights and drugs a la the 1996 adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. The title roles are played by Douglas Booth (“Great Expectations”) and Hailee Steinfeld (“True Grit"). A new trailer features “Gossip Girl” star Ed Westwick as the hot-headed Tybalt of the Capulet family, who taunts Romeo, “Come settle with me, boy!” (Actually feels like something Chuck Bass might've said on “Gossip Girl.”) He's joined by big names including Damian Lewis as Lord Capulet, Paul Giamatti as Friar Laurence, and Stellan Skarsgard as the Prince of Verona. It's been quite a while since there was a big, classic adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet.” But unlike Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 version,...
