Ingrid Veninger’s latest film has to be the fastest movie ever made for Tiff. The Toronto filmmaker was on her way to unspool her 2010 feature, Modra, at film fests across Europe when she seized the opportunity to shoot an entirely new film.
That meant 19 days of scripting, casting and rehearsals in Toronto in March this year, 13 days shooting in north England, Paris and Berlin, then wrapping with five weeks of post in T.O. to make the Tiff deadline. That also meant Veninger presenting Modra in one cinema and then becoming “Ruby White,” who was premiering a fictitious film at the same festival at the same time. I don’t even think John Cassavetes took personal filmmaking this far.

The film follows a girl from Toronto who decide to travel in order to find out where she comes from.
Lina (Hallie Switzer) is seventeen years old and lives in Toronto with her mother. For one week during the summer holidays she plans to visit her extended family in Modra, a small town in Slovakia. When Lina is dumped by her boyfriend she invites Leco (Alexander Gammal) instead, a cute boy from school.
Not long after arriving in Modra, Lina and Leco discover they have little in common. To make matters worse, Lina's family mistakenly assumes they're a couple, setting off a chain reaction which leads to an explosion of repressed desire and confusion.

The problem with Ingrid Veninger's Modra is it's not much of a film. Two American teenagers visit a small European town, one trying to reconnect with her ethnic background, both trying to make sense of adolescent hormones. On the one hand, to say it's not much of a film is a facile over-simplification - the director's connection with the story is obvious in the amount of work she and her crew have put in, not to mention some beautifully naturalistic performances from her leads. On the other hand, it's plain to see Veninger is a little too connected to the project; she went through a similar experience as a young woman, and this is evident for all the wrong reasons. Every year 'round about this time the Toronto International Film Festival Group announces their selections as Canada's Top Ten Feature Films and Short Films. Selected by a jury of industry professionals it's general a pretty good guide for what's happening here in any given year.
This year's selections were announced today and while I personally consider the absence of Jacob Tierney's Good Neighbours to be a significant omission it's pretty hard to argue with the titles that are actually in there. The films selected will all screen at the Tiff Bell Lightbox beginning in January. Here's the full announcement:

The 34th São Paulo International Film Festival (site), which opened on Friday and runs through November 4, is partnering with Mubi to make a dozen shorts and over 50 features it's screening available online — for free — to viewers in Brazil.
A sampling of the highlights would include Red Light Revolution (the site has a trailer), written and directed by Sam Voutas (who appeared in Lu Chuan's City of Life and Death) and flying in the face of expectations many might have of Chinese cinema — it's a comedy about opening a sex shop in a conservative Beijing neighborhood.

The 29th annual Vancouver International Film Festival concluded its 16-day run, October 15.
The Dragons & Tigers Award for Young Cinema went to Hirohara Satoru of Japan for the film "Good Morning To The World", with Special Mentions for "Don't Be Afraid Bi!" and "Rumination".
The Et Canada Award for Best Canadian Feature Film went to Quebec director Denis Villeneuve for "Incendies", with an Honourable Mention given to Denis Côté's "Curling".

The mission to make a teen romance that offers something fresh and new to the well worn genre continues and one of this year’s attempts to breathe some new life into the genre is Ingrid Veninger’s Modra. What sets Verninger’s film apart is its use of location, choosing to take a couple of teens and dropping them in Slovakia but the conventions of the troubled teenage romance remain the same, even the if the settings are much prettier than we’re usually accustomed to.

The lists I've kept through the year come out and I eagerly look through the list of titles in search of those little gems and every year Viff responds with a huge assortment of titles. This year's festival is no different.
Some of the titles we're most eagerly anticipating include Tsumetai Nettaigyo’s Cold Fish (trailer), Gareth Edwards’ Monsters (trailer, review), Jo Sung-Hee’s apocalyptic road movie End of Animal, Carl Bessai’s Repeaters (trailer) and Xavier Dolan's Heartbeats (trailer, review).

The organizers at the Toronto International Film Festival have put together one hell of an impressive line-up that has grown significantly since my first list announcing the Galas and Special Presentations, a pair of lists that have also grown since then.
The lists have grown to include Massy Tadjedin's Last Night starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, which will serve as the closing night film.
It's also grown to include Danny Boyle's 127 Hours starring James Franco. Boyle recently spoke about the film at Movie Con and told the audience there it may be a challenge to watch saying, "It's a lovely way of doing a new kind of filmmaking, really. We want it to be a challenge to you [the audience] to see if you can sit and watch it."

As usual, the Toronto International Film Festival sticks to one of its mission: promoting Canadian films to the world. In fact, the complete line-up of Canadian films has been revealed today. Moreover, the festival will be held from September 9 to 19.
