Ingrid Veninger’s latest film has to be the fastest movie ever made for Tiff. The Toronto filmmaker was on her way to unspool her 2010 feature, Modra, at film fests across Europe when she seized the opportunity to shoot an entirely new film.
That meant 19 days of scripting, casting and rehearsals in Toronto in March this year, 13 days shooting in north England, Paris and Berlin, then wrapping with five weeks of post in T.O. to make the Tiff deadline. That also meant Veninger presenting Modra in one cinema and then becoming “Ruby White,” who was premiering a fictitious film at the same festival at the same time. I don’t even think John Cassavetes took personal filmmaking this far.
The constraints Veninger placed on herself and her skeleton crew and cast probably made i am a good person/i am a bad person a better film. In fact, it is a strong,...

Lost in a sea of major Hollywood releases and hyped international films are the hidden gems of the Toronto International Film Festival. These are the films that you won’t likely get the chance to see again in theatres, at least not in Toronto.
Andrew Parker has picked three films that are defintely not your typical fare, but that he believes are nonetheless worthy of your time and attention: First Position, Doppelgänger Paul and i am a good person, i am a bad person.
First Position, dir. Bess Kargman
I’ll freely admit that there are two things that I am a sucker for: inspirational documentaries and dance films. Director Bess Kargman delivers the best of both worlds with a story of a group of kids training for and competing in the prestigious Youth America Grand Prix. The competition is known as the premiere showcase for ballet students looking for...

Ingrid Veninger's indie film, Modra, is now available on DVD, iTunes and Amazon.ca across Canada.
The film follows a girl from Toronto who decide to travel in order to find out where she comes from.
Lina (Hallie Switzer) is seventeen years old and lives in Toronto with her mother. For one week during the summer holidays she plans to visit her extended family in Modra, a small town in Slovakia. When Lina is dumped by her boyfriend she invites Leco (Alexander Gammal) instead, a cute boy from school.
Not long after arriving in Modra, Lina and Leco discover they have little in common. To make matters worse, Lina's family mistakenly assumes they're a couple, setting off a chain reaction which leads to an explosion of repressed desire and confusion.
Finally, here's the link on iTunes.

The problem with Ingrid Veninger's Modra is it's not much of a film. Two American teenagers visit a small European town, one trying to reconnect with her ethnic background, both trying to make sense of adolescent hormones. On the one hand, to say it's not much of a film is a facile over-simplification - the director's connection with the story is obvious in the amount of work she and her crew have put in, not to mention some beautifully naturalistic performances from her leads. On the other hand, it's plain to see Veninger is a little too connected to the project; she went through a similar experience as a young woman, and this is evident for all the wrong reasons. Modra starts out well,...

Every year 'round about this time the Toronto International Film Festival Group announces their selections as Canada's Top Ten Feature Films and Short Films. Selected by a jury of industry professionals it's general a pretty good guide for what's happening here in any given year.
This year's selections were announced today and while I personally consider the absence of Jacob Tierney's Good Neighbours to be a significant omission it's pretty hard to argue with the titles that are actually in there. The films selected will all screen at the Tiff Bell Lightbox beginning in January. Here's the full announcement:
Toronto -- Tiff revealed the top 10 best features and top 10 best short films of 2010 this evening at the 10th annual Canada's Top Ten industry event, hosted by Peter Keleghan and Leah Pinsent. Established in 2001, Canada's Top Ten celebrates excellence in Canadian cinema and raises public awareness of Canadian achievements in film.

The 34th São Paulo International Film Festival (site), which opened on Friday and runs through November 4, is partnering with Mubi to make a dozen shorts and over 50 features it's screening available online — for free — to viewers in Brazil.
A sampling of the highlights would include Red Light Revolution (the site has a trailer), written and directed by Sam Voutas (who appeared in Lu Chuan's City of Life and Death) and flying in the face of expectations many might have of Chinese cinema — it's a comedy about opening a sex shop in a conservative Beijing neighborhood.
Back in January, John Anderson wrote in Variety that "William S Burroughs has been overripe for the kind of substantive, stylistically simpatico docu treatment he gets from helmer Yony Leyser, whose William S Burroughs: A Man Within does real justice to the Beat writer, gun nut and literary icon."

The mission to make a teen romance that offers something fresh and new to the well worn genre continues and one of this year’s attempts to breathe some new life into the genre is Ingrid Veninger’s Modra. What sets Verninger’s film apart is its use of location, choosing to take a couple of teens and dropping them in Slovakia but the conventions of the troubled teenage romance remain the same, even the if the settings are much prettier than we’re usually accustomed to.
Modra opens with Lina having just broken up with her boyfriend. She’s at home feeling sorry for herself, when she gets a call from Leco, a classmate looking for a date (she’s his third choice). She explains that she can’t go out...

'Little Miss Sunshine' kid Abigail Breslin sang in front of an audience for the first time, belting some tunes she recorded for 'Janie Jones' (here's a clip of that performance). People are on their way out of Toronto, including Natalie Portman, seen at Pearson airport. Is this an unveiling of Ryan Gosling's wax likeness for Madame Tussauds or the actor himself on the red carpet for the 'Blue Valentine' premiere? Sarah Silverman adjusts her top at the 'Peep World' premiere, Jennifer Connelly seems to have borrowed an old British WWII desert uniform for the 'What's Wrong with Virginia' premiere. Did Aidan Quinn and Kristen Scott Thomas plan to wear matching digs to their 'Sarah's Key' premiere?

The Vancouver International Film Festival is my baby. In its 29th year, this is the event I look forward to every year. The lists I've kept through the year come out and I eagerly look through the list of titles in search of those little gems and every year Viff responds with a huge assortment of titles. This year's festival is no different.
Some of the titles we're most eagerly anticipating include Tsumetai Nettaigyo’s Cold Fish (trailer), Gareth Edwards’ Monsters (trailer, review), Jo Sung-Hee’s apocalyptic road movie End of Animal, Carl Bessai’s Repeaters (trailer) and Xavier Dolan's Heartbeats (trailer, review).
There's loads more so be sure to check the titles (so far) after the break. Many more to be announced in the coming days.

Rachel Weisz in The Whistleblower The Toronto International Film Festival has added even more films to their line-up today as the complete line-up was announced, which ended up causing the festival's server to crash, but I was lucky enough to get in and get out before missing out on the information.
First off, the festival's Mavericks line-up is quite interesting, which includes a series of guest presentations and this year will see Edward Norton interview Bruce Springsteen, NBA All-Star and native Canadian Steve Nash will present his hour-long film Into the Wind, Apichatpong Weerasethakul will talk with the audience as his Cannes Palm d'Or-winning film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall his Past Lives was just added to the Masters programme, Ken Loach and Paul Laverty will be interviewed by Michael Moore on politics and cinema and Philip Seymour Hoffman will have his own panel. The sophomore film from the director of Ex Drummer, Swedish thriller Bad Faith, Pablo Trapero's Carancho (my personal favorite film from Cannes 2010), Tsui Hark's Detective Dee, Tom Tykwer's Three and a host of others populate one of the more exciting lineups for the Tiff Contemporary World Cinema Program in recent years. Here's the complete lineup:
22nd of May Koen Mortier, Belgium World Premiere
The director of Ex-Drummer returns with an artful meditation on political violence. A security guard fails to prevent a horrific explosion in a shopping mall, then lives through the aftermath as a series of overlapping what-ifs.
Africa United Debs Gardner-Paterson, United Kingdom World Premiere
Africa United tells the extraordinary story of three Rwandan children and their bid to achieve their lifelong dream - to take part in the opening ceremony of the 2010 Football World Cup in Johannesburg.

The organizers at the Toronto International Film Festival have put together one hell of an impressive line-up that has grown significantly since my first list announcing the Galas and Special Presentations, a pair of lists that have also grown since then.
The lists have grown to include Massy Tadjedin's Last Night starring Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and Guillaume Canet, which will serve as the closing night film.
It's also grown to include Danny Boyle's 127 Hours starring James Franco. Boyle recently spoke about the film at Movie Con and told the audience there it may be a challenge to watch saying, "It's a lovely way of doing a new kind of filmmaking, really.
