Ron Nyswaner will soon be traveling to New York to reunite with his Writers Guild of America East fellows for a grand occasion. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter, producer and showrunner has been selected to receive the Walter Bernstein Award at the 76th Writers Guild Awards at New York’s Edison Ballroom on April 14.
The honor — named after the late screenwriter who was blacklisted for his political views only to persevere and get his career back on track with such credits as Fail-Safe, Semi-Tough and Yanks — is presented to writers “who have demonstrated with creativity, grace and bravery a willingness to confront social injustice in the face of adversity,” per the organization.
Nyswaner has been doing that for pretty much his entire career. A prime example is Jonathan Demme’s 1993 film Philadelphia. Penned by Nyswaner, the Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington-starrer was the first major Hollywood film to dramatize the real-world...

By coming out as trans, Elliot Page has joined the ranks of transgender celebrities like Laverne Cox, Caitlyn Jenner, and Chaz Bono — the first three photos that appear after a Google search for “famous trans people.” Notably, only Bono is trans masculine in the group, and while he is a trailblazer who came out during a much different time, his story is lesser known by the young people who would most benefit from his example. As a trans masculine person, I wish I had grown up with a role model like Elliot Page, and I am so happy for all the kids who get to live in a world where he can, as he so eloquently wrote, “love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.”
There are many reasons why trans feminine identities have been more visible in the years that have seen a steady growth in trans media representation,...

By announcing that he was transgender, Oscar nominee Elliot Page has increased the visibility of a community that has been calling for just that, as well as more accurate representation in movies, TV shows and other forms of entertainment.
The actor, known both for beloved indies like “Juno” and superhero franchises like “X-Men,” also said he was gender nonbinary, with he/they pronoun preferences, in an emotional Instagram post. The statement both celebrated his revelation and underscored the dangers trans people face around the world.
“The vast majority of Americans still believe they’ve never met someone in their family, workplace, or school, who is transgender,” said Nick Adams, director of transgender media at GLAAD. “When someone like Elliot Page tells the world that he is in fact transgender, an actor that people have respected and admired and loved for years, it allows them to feel as if they now know a trans person.

Following in the footsteps of her Marvel co-star Mark Ruffalo, actress-turned-filmmaker Ellen Page is funneling her considerable influence and resources into raising awareness around environmental justice. Last year, Ruffalo produced and starred in Todd Haynes’ under-appreciated “Dark Waters,” a narrative feature about the Dupont Teflon case. Since her breakout role in “Juno,” Page’s acting roles have always supported feminist perspectives. More recently, she also served as producer on films like “My Days of Mercy” and “Freeheld,” projects she also starred in that touched on issues surrounding incarceration and prison reform. Now, Page has stepped (almost) fully behind the camera, co-directing with pal Ian Daniel

As film festivals are canceled, movie theaters close and some films lose their chance at theatrical release, awards bodies are enacting, or at least considering, changes to their rules to accommodate the new landscape caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Film Independent Spirit Awards, for example, is now allowing films that were selected by the South by Southwest Film Festival, which was canceled, and the Tribeca and New Directors/New Films festivals, which were postponed, to qualify for the Spirit Awards just as if those festivals had taken place.
“This is a situation no one could have imagined,” Film Independent President Josh Welsh told TheWrap. “It’s having unparalleled impacts on filmmakers, festivals and our community as a whole. We want the filmmaking community to know we are here alongside everyone trying to figure things out day by day and of course any festival that is currently a qualifying festival...

Swampy Muscle Shoals soul mixes with a funky Seventies color palette in Grace Potter’s splashy new video for “Back to Me.” The latest release from Potter’s second solo disc Daylight, “Back to Me” finds the singer worn-out and threadbare as a relationship unravels, but she’s also resolute about the inevitable conclusion.

Over the decades, Browne has found himself in some unusual situations linked to his music: singing in a jail cell after being arrested while protesting the opening of a nuclear power plant, or recording an album (Running on Empty) on tour buses and in hotel rooms. To that list, Browne can now add witnessing a voodoo ceremony in Haiti.

2019 was another record-breaking year for Czech movie theatres, and the charts were topped by a home-grown rom-com. While Us imports – most recently various superhero franchises and blockbusters – and films for children used to be commercial sure-fire hits at the Czech box office, a Czech first-time director trounced them all in 2019. The mainstream romantic comedy Women on the Run, directed by Martin Horský, who wrote scripts prior to his record-breaking first directorial outing, brought 1,543,842 paying cinema-goers into theatres, grossing a total of 211 million Czech crowns (€8.4 million). The romantic comedy (which secured a 32.6% share of the Czech market) about women who are “not afraid to run towards luck”, co-produced by CinemArt, the film’s distributor, became the fastest Czech film in...
The soundtrack for director Cary Fukunaga’s upcoming James Bond film “No Time to Die” is shaping up to be quite the mind meld. Earlier this week, it was announced that vocal-fried pop queen of doom du jour Billie Eilish has written and will perform the film’s theme song — and, at 18, she’s the youngest artist ever to do so. Now, Johnny Marr will be joining composer Hans Zimmer to write the score, as revealed today by NME.
The lead guitarist behind The Smiths, everybody’s favorite gloomy English rock band of the 1980s, will, like Academy Award-winning composer Zimmer, be making his James Bond debut here. It’s the 25th film in the franchise, and will be the last one to star Daniel Craig in the role of 007. The last Bond score, for “Spectre,” was penned by Thomas Newman, an Academy Award nominee this year for “1917,” and...

When Dan Levy first went to his father Eugene Levy to ask him to work on the pilot of “Schitt’s Creek” with him, the senior Levy admits he was shocked, excited and panicked.
“He never came to me for anything in his life — when he was in school doing plays, [I’d say], ]Do you want me to help you read lines?’ ‘No, I got it,” Levy recalled at the Pop TV Television Critics Assn. press tour panel for the show Monday. So when he finally came and said, ‘I have an idea for a show, do you want to work on it?’ As a dad, it’s like, ‘This moment finally came, thank you; it doesn’t matter what the idea is, I’ll work on it, we’ll try to get it going.'”

Recently, after seeing “Love, Simon,” filmmaker Xavier Dolan wrote on his Instagram page, “Let’s not discuss the movie itself, but rather focus on its existence, and the fact a major studio has released a film on a teen coming out. A door has opened, which has opened before, but this time, I can see the light pouring in.” He praised the film for being a huge step towards building narratives around Lgbtq protagonists instead of relinquishing them to comical supporting roles. When “Call Me by Your Name” was shown to festivalgoers at Sundance, the film immediately picked up momentum, building on its initial buzz to receive several Academy Award nominations, including best picture. It was a coming-of-age love story, which happened to have two male leads.

Alrighty then I'm in. My body is ready!! This time around it seems that the robot is not part of the original crew but an alien lifeform Will Robinson discovers after they get "lost". I gotta admit when i saw the robot it looked like some kind of advance scout for an invading alien force. This thing looks and sounds meanacing especially when it says that famous catch-phrase "Danger, Will Robinson!", part of me expected it to attack after saying it.
We also get a few scenes of Parker Posey who plays the role of Dr. Smith, the prerson responsible for for sabotaging...

MaryAnn’s quick take… The reboot no one asked for of a movie no one much remembers has landed… and it’s dead on arrival, with nothing new to say and no new way to say it. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m a fan of some of the cast
I’m “biast” (con): tired of all the reboots
I have seen the source material (and I don’t much like it)
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
The reboot no one asked for of a movie no one much remembers has landed… and it’s dead on arrival. Oh, this new and pointless Flatliners deserves all the terrible death-related puns we can toss at it: “Someone should have put a do-not-rescusitate on the 1990 movie.” “A fate worse than death.” “Brain dead.” “Send it to the morgue.” C’mon, it’s fun!

I’m “biast” (con): tired of all the reboots
I have seen the source material (and I don’t much like it)
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

MaryAnn’s quick take… Save us from male artists who think they are dangerously, uniquely innovative. This stew of toxic masculinity and CGI-cartoon violence is nothing but tediously mundane. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast, mostly
I’m “biast” (con): hated the first film

Here’s a phrase I do not recall from Kingsman: The Secret Service: “independent intelligence agency.” This is uttered in Kingsman: The Golden Circle in connection with the American counterpart to Kingsman: Statesman, to which we are introduced here. But what does that mean, precisely? It means they’re mercenary spies, doesn’t it? I have a vague recollection of Secret Service mentioning something about Kingsman being funded by the crown heads of Europe, which at least offers a veneer of governmental authority and fealty to law and order — though of course there...

MaryAnn’s quick take… An essential history lesson with a smart smack of relevance for today (because feminism always has to be relitigated). It’s also warm, funny, and hugely entertaining. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): not a sports fan at all
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
That saying about those not remembering the past being condemned to repeat it? Of course it’s true… but sometimes it’s not an accident that the past gets forgotten. Sometimes the squashing of history — and the continuation of history into the present — is deliberate. Feminists know this: Women are constantly having to reinvent feminism, refight the same battles, because they don’t stay won. A brief moment of small triumph very quickly gets drowned out by major cultural pushback; women may savor victory only long enough...
