Jon Watts chats to us about Spider-Man: Homecoming, sequels, Vulture, Tony Stark, Venom, Stan Lee, Marc Webb and more...
Back in 2015, I spoke to Jon Watts via an international phone line. I was at home, and he was deeply entrenched in Marvel Studios, beginning work on the film we later came to know as Spider-Man: Homecoming. The main topic of discussion back then was his Kevin Bacon-featuring micro budget thriller, Cop Car.
A year and bit later, on a blisteringly hot June day, Watts and I met for real in a swanky London hotel. He was just as lovely in real life as he was on the blower, enthusiastically chatting about Homecoming, the future of Spidey at the cinema, and a number of other projects. Here’s the transcript...
[Nb: this interview took place before all the 'Venom is in the McU'/'no it isn't' hoohah.]

When you add a pinch of '80s nostalgia with a dash of action and gore and mix them together you get Turbo Kid, which will be released in the U.K. on Blu-ray in October. Also: an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from Extinction and first details on the web series It Came from Candi's Lab.
Turbo Kid: Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release Turbo Kid on Blu-ray in the U.K. on October 5th. Turbo Kid stars Munro Chambers, Laurence Leboeuf, Michael Ironside, Edwin Wright, and Aaron Jeffery.
From Blu-ray.com: "Synopsis: Turbo Kid is a celebration of all things that were awesome about the age of movies on VHS. It's packed with nods to 1980s pop culture (even down to Atari-style credits and its synth-tastic score) and riffs on the kids' adventure movies such as BMX Bandits, The Monster Squad, and The Goonies.

Exclusive: End Cue, the financier-producer that teamed on the Sundance film Cop Car with newly minted Spider-Man helmer Jon Watts and writer Christopher Ford, has a follow-up project with the duo. End Cue has closed a pitch deal in competition on what is being called The Untitled Urban Explorers film. Watts and Ford will write it for Watts to direct. It is described as young-adult adventure set under NYC's Lower East Side. The auction began before Watts was tapped by…...

After working away for years on shorts and smaller films, including upcoming thriller Cop Car, writer/director Jon Watts exploded into the spotlight last month when he was selected by Sony and Marvel to direct the companies’ new take on Spider-Man. While the superhero movie will keep him busy for a while, he’s still setting up other projects, included an untitled film for financial backers/production company End Cue. According Deadline, the idea, which is for now known as The Untitled Urban Explorers Film, is apparently a young adult adventure that sees its characters travelling under the streets of New York’s Lower East Side. Watts will write the script with Cop Car collaborator Christopher Ford, and the project was nabbed by the company, which also backed Cop Car, before the big Spider-announcement.Of course, there’s every chance the End Cue team will have to wait to see the new project realised.

"No one else helped me," says Chadwick Boseman, the actor playing James Brown in the biopic Get on Up, due out in August. The two-and-a-half minute trailer above shows how the soul singer became the legendary performer and bandleader, surviving an impoverished childhood and a stint in juvie where he put together a gospel choir. The clip also features concerts, high-speed police chases and even a touching flashback to his childhood when his aunt tells him, "One day, everybody gonna know your name." The movie's tagline is, "What you have heard is only the beginning.

Urban explorer Andrew Emond has been fascinated with underground tunnels and secret passages all his life, and when he came to live in Montreal seven years ago, he decided to investigate what lies beneath his new home town. What he found there was a secret world that could give a cave troll the creeps. Photo by Andrew Emond Montreal is well-known for a vast, 18-mile underground city complex filled with malls, theaters and restaurants... but these unseen tunnels lie much deeper, and are virtually unknown to city dwellers. Photo by Andrew Emond Montreal news & culture site Mtl Blog recently posted several of Emond's photos, which reveal a hidden network of storm drains and service tunnels – some so encrusted with mineral deposits that the original structures are no longer visible. With staggering sex appeal and serious star power that has lasted generations, Mick Jagger is more than a man; he's an icon. Which makes casting someone to play his younger self in a movie a pretty daunting endeavor. (Like casting Freddie Mercury almost!) But at long last the search of Get On Up filmmakers has ended, as THR announces Nick Eversman has signed on to play the Rolling Stones front man in the James Brown biopic. Eversman has an impressive list of film and TV credits considering he only made his screen debut in 2009 in a little-known crime-drama called Innocent. Since then, he has appeared in televisions shows like The Missing, CSI: Miami and House, as well as landed roles in movies like Hellraiser: Revelations, Vampires Suck, and the horror-thriller The Depraved. However, he might be best recognized as a series regular on the new CW sci-fi show The Tomorrow...

With all the talk of Sdcc this week, let's not forget about a big event our neighbors to the North are hosting. Fantasia Film Fest kicks off in Montreal on July 18, and among the attractions of the Off-Frontières lineup will be the Rasmussen Brothers' Subculture.
Described as an urban version of The Descent, Subculture sounds like a journey into darkness not to be missed. Although inspired by a found footage short film the Brothers shot back in 2009 entitled "Missing Urban Explorers" (it was actually one of the runners-up of our "8 Shorts to Die For" contest), the feature is Not found footage.
Check out their original short below, and look for more soon!

Horror is about finding what scares us, or makes us feel uncomfortable and using that against us. It’s that fear of the dark, or the sudden attack out of nowhere, or that shadowy figure following us at night. One of the scenarios that seem to be popular is the fear of being trapped underground and attacked by creatures that are more adapted to that environment. We’ve had Creep, The Descent, Urban Explorers and now Underground, just to name a few.
When a group of friends get stuck underground after a fight at a party on an abandoned army base they find themselves being hunted by creatures in the darkness. As they fight for survival and to save their friends...

Urban exploration is risky business when four international students hire a local guide to lead them through the ruins of old Berlin. In what they find in the tunnels is more treacherous than this city’s sordid past. In the real hobby, many adventurers can find plenty of rustic decay to archive, figurative history to marvel at and graffitti to indicate where others have dare treaded.
In the movie that takes a simple title of Urbex: Urban Explorer, there might be some confusion in what can be examined. To look around inside any old abandoned building can be exciting. But there is more to this hobby than just going underground. Rank tunnels are often a source for many movies on a tight budget and this tale is one that gets detailed. Director: Andy Fetscher. Review: Adam Wing. Picture the scene: A young girl, terrified and confused, boards a busy subway train in an attempt to escape the crazed madman chasing her. He too gets on the train and continues to taunt her in front of the other passengers. By pretending to be a ticket collector, he attempts to drag her from the train. The girl - by now battered and bruised - screams out to one of the other passengers, “He’s a killer, a f*cking lunatic. Don’t you understand?” As the bloody psychopath pulls her from the train, the passenger - without an ounce of humour - replies, “Sorry, but you need a ticket.” The moral of this story, I hear you ask? Don’t take the train next time you’re in Germany. Gritty horror Urban Explorers is available in the UK for the first time this month.

Do you like watching stupid people die? Not the cheeriest introduction, maybe, but it's hard to see what else anyone could get out of Andy Fetscher's Urban Explorer. Four young people go creeping through the tunnels under Berlin, only someone's waiting down there who's a little too happy to see them. Fetscher's film is technically sound, and when the gore starts in earnest it's skilfully done but the director does practically nothing to dispel the idea we're just marking time until these kids start begging for their lives. It's not merely the production-line approach of modern-day stalk and slash productions like something bankrolled by Platinum Dunes. There's an ugly, cynical streak to Urban Explorer that's not so much misanthropic as downright lazy, with great swathes...

Is there anyplace more romantic than Berlin in the Fall? Probably. But that doesn’t mean love can’t blossom in Germany’s capital city amidst friends and strangers alike. It’s just unfortunate the lovebirds decided to celebrate by sneaking into the subterranean depths beneath Berlin on a guided tour of the tunnels and rooms left over from World War II. Unfortunate for them, but pretty convenient for the madman lurking down below. Denis (Nick Eversman) and Lucia (Nathalie Kelley) are a young couple who decide to tack a spelunking adventure on to their date, and they’re joined by two strangers, Marie (Catherine de Léan) and Juna (Brenda Koo), who soon discover a flirtation of their own. The quartet is led underground by their local guide, Kris (Max Riemelt), who has discovered a lucrative little business with these excursions. They head out and down, and after being impressed early on by the immense scope and...

Perhaps it is our fallible sense of curiosity, or even our penchant for surprises, but for some reason, Secret Screenings always seem to be the center of attention at any Film Festival. It’s like the one Christmas present that you get to open the night before. You try your best to choose wisely, all the while knowing that many times, the game is rigged against you, and instead of opening that new Playstation 3, more times than not, you will accidentally choose the box containing a few new pairs of socks.
Now I had tried to get into the first Secret Screening earlier in the festival, but a faulty queue system mixed with high demand, made that venture near impossible. So initially when I found out that I had once again missed the bus and would not be able to make it to the 2nd Secret Screening, I had taken it pretty hard.

There's almost too much that's good about Fantastic Fest: experiencing the Alamo Drafthouse for a week straight; the small, friendly, film fan atmosphere; the parties. Oh yeah, then there's the insane films. Every year Fantastic Fest is filled with a ton of wild genre flicks that either you've never heard of yet or already have a lot of buzz surrounding them. As the 2011 festival is set to kick off this week, /Film will be on the ground telling you about the sickest, most disturbing and exciting films playing in Austin, Texas. Before that though, since there's so much that's good about Fantastic Fest, we've got three lists to get you as excited: The Top 15 Films I'm Curious About - The true gems of Fantastic Fest, these are the wild cards we're excited for from description alone. The Top 10 Most Anticipated Films - These are films with familiar names or built in buzz from previous festivals.

Urban Explorer
Stars: Nathalie Kelley, Nick Eversman, Klaus Stiglmeier, Max Riemelt, Catherine de Léan, Brenda Koo | Written by Martin Thau | Directed by Andy Fetscher
I should caveat this review by saying that there was a bit of a screw up with the print shown during FrightFest; there was a total lack of subtitles. This may not sound like a major problem as the majority of the cast are English speaking, but there’s a particularly major character that speaks entirely in German. By the sound of the director’s comments after the screening, much of this character’s motivation and humour would have been missed as a result.
That said, Urban Explorer still wasn’t a film I enjoyed.
A few years ago I read a novel called Creepers by David Morrell. It tells the tale of urban explorers and paints a brilliant world of danger and excitement. It would...

Guess it's just a centipede-y kind of day. Aubrey already showed you a new preview image from "The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence." Now I've got the info on where you'll be able to see the film for the very first time: Austin's Fantastic Fest, on September 22. The deranged depravity debuts as this year's Opening Night Film.
Along with the announcement that director Tom Six's sequel to everyone's favorite ass-to-mouth horror movie will make its world premiere at the festival, Fantastic Fest also solidified the remainder of its lineup today. You can see it all below, but here are a few noteworthy highlights: the Us premiere of Morgan Spurlock's San Diego Comic-Con documentary, "Episode IV: A Fan's Hope," a Cuban zombie movie called -- you're gonna love this -- "Juan of the Dead," and a 30th anniversary screening of "An American Werewolf in London" with makeup artist Rick Baker in attendance.

Urban Explorers
Directed by Andy Festscher
Germany, 2011
Friday at Frightfest continued this year with the low budget underground German horror Urban Explorers. Be warned – this film is titled (both on IMDb and the print we saw) as Urban Explorer, but the director made a point of stating that it is actually called Urban Explorers and is not to be confused with the 2007 documentary Urban Explorers : Into the Darkness.
The plot centres around the fascinating ‘hobby’ of urban exploring – which a small group of people around the World participate in – entering dark, closed off urban environments such as abandoned warehouses, drainage systems, bunkers, and in this case; secret underground tunnels left over from the second World War.
It kicks off with an international group of early twenty-something’s in Berlin meeting up with a local guide called Kris for an illegal journey into the belly of the city where a...

As the holiest range of dates in the British horror fanatic’s calendar now consigns itself to history, so too do the memories of this year’s Film4 FrightFest (Thursday 25 August to Monday 29 August). As usual, Dread Central was on the scene to bring you insight into the machinations of the UK’s biggest horror film festival. Read on for the details and a sample of our huge forthcoming image gallery!
Now in its twelfth year of operation, the UK’s premier destination for lovers of all things scary and violent appears to have settled solidly into what will likely be its permanent home for the future – the Empire Cinema in London’s Leicester Square. Did we mention last year that it’s also the largest cinema screen in the UK? We did, you say? Well, it is. And it’s a wonderful thing to behold every single time you enter the auditorium.

The German horror import Urban Explorer is a "glass half full" sort of proposition. More specifically, it's a rock-solid setting for a scary story that, unfortunately, is virtually bereft of a narrative that suits it. Stop me when this sounds like something you've seen before: Five young adults decide to go "urban exploring" deep within the underground catacombs of Berlin. (still with me?) Their subterranean exploits yield dangers considerably more hazardous than some rusty nails and crumbling walls. (anywhere know where this is going yet?) After much wandering, lots of chatting, and numerous bad decisions, our quintet runs into a horrible accident, which...

The film itself although German funded is in fact in the English language so for those of you who despise subtitles can breathe a sigh of relief - losers!. The Fantasia Film Festival is by far my favourite film festival in the world and I’ve been impatiently awaiting some news of what films they’ll be screening this year. Considered the world’s largest genre film festival and running over three weeks long, the event is celebrating it’s 15th edition this year and the lineup is already pretty incredible. In the past I’ve seen some of my favourite films premiere at the fest and last year I wrote up a list of the best films ever screened at the fest which you can read here. This year Kevin Smith’s Red State opens the festival and directors Robin Hardy (The Wicker Man) and Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil) will be in the house to discuss the occult on film.
