The Marvel Cinematic Universe will eventually need to find an actor to play Gambit, but Channing Tatum might not be the best option. Once upon a time, Channing Tatum was promised to herald a solo Gambit movie for the Fox universe, with the project falling through following Disney's acquisition of the X-Men. Tatum has finally gotten to play the beloved Cajun card-slinging mutant in a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, but going forward, he might not be Marvel Studios' best choice for Remy LeBeau.
There are a few reasons why the MCU might be better off looking for a different actor to play Gambit for any future X-Men projects. For one, Tatum's Gambit has been memed into oblivion since he first hit theaters, meaning audiences would be far less likely to take him seriously after being a walking punchline in Deadpool & Wolverine. Not only that, but Channing Tatum's classically handsome looks...

Patrick Lussier's 2011 film "Drive Angry" might belong to a genre hereby designated "neo-grindhouse." There was a wave of films in the late 2000s and early 2010s that sought to evoke the style or the content of a very specific type of exploitation movie that was popular in the 1970s. In addition to the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez 2007 twofer "Grindhouse" and its spinoffs, films like "Redline," "The Man with the Iron Fists," "Turbo Kid," "Kung Fury," "Hatchet," "Torque," "Deathgasm," "House of the Devil," and "The Love Witch" popped up on the regular.
"Drive Angry" gleefully embraced its goofy, action/horror premise with aplomb. A dead race car driver named (sigh) John Milton (Nicolas Cage) escapes the clutches of Hell having stolen Satan's persona gun, a device called the Godkiller. On his tail is Satan's Accountant (William Fichtner), assigned with nabbing John and dragging him back to Hell. John,...

"Death Proof" is usually ranked lowest among Quentin Tarantino's directorial efforts, which is a shame since newbies might take that to mean it's not worth seeking out. (It absolutely is.) A 1970s exploitation homage initially released as part of his and Robert Rodriguez's failed 2007 "Grindhouse" double-feature experiment, the movie lends Tarantino's distinctive banter to a slasher about an over-the-hill stunt double, dubbed "Stuntman" Mike (Kurt Russell), who slays his victims using a rigged stunt vehicle.
"Death Proof" abides by the expectations of its genre for its first half, following Mike as he hunts his prey, not by stalking them under the cover of night but by schmoozing them up at a bar and cunningly striking when their defenses are down (but their blood-alcohol levels are up). It's only in its second half that the film stealthily -- and swiftly -- evolves into a women's empowerment story by way of a revenge thriller,...

When you think about improvisation in movies, you might initially think of comedies — the kind that come with blooper reels that are often just as good as the movie itself. We've all spent an inordinate amount of time watching and rewatching "The Office" bloopers or marveling at the unhinged absurdity of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly's extemporaneous efforts in the "Step Brothers" blooper reel. Heck, you might even think of Chris Hemsworth improvising Thor lines.
But improv isn't, of course, just a comedic tool. Throughout the history of cinema, actors have embraced spontaneity to add an extra level of realism to their performances. Just look at Jack Nicholson and that famous "Here's Johnny" line from "The Shining." Then, there's Harrison Ford, who improvised one particular Indiana Jones moment in 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," adding a touch of levity to the action-adventure classic.
But just a year later,...

Eli Roth's 2023 slasher film "Thanksgiving" famously started its life back in 2007 in the form of a fake trailer sandwiched in between Robert Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" and Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof," two movies released as a single mega-feature called "Grindhouse." The goal of "Grindhouse" was to recreate the experience of seeing a cheap exploitation double-feature in a run-down New York theater in the early 1980s, complete with film scratches, missing reels, and several previews for upcoming ultra-salacious genre movies. The trailers were all fake at the time, but since 2007, the trailers for "Machete," "Hobo with a Shotgun," and "Thanksgiving" have been made into real movies.
Roth, as the director's fans know, is a voracious cineaste, and has likely spent more time watching movies than most people. He also wears his influences on his sleeve; in the credits for Roth's 2013 cannibal film "The Green Inferno," he includes a list...

What better time to celebrate "Thanksgiving" than midwinter? Eli Roth's latest slasher is officially due out on digital, DVD, and Blu-Ray before the month of January is through, which is good news for horror fans trapped in the doldrums of what is traditionally the worst month for the genre. If you haven't already seen the colonial holiday kill-fest, which was built around a fake movie trailer Roth made for the film "Grindhouse" way back in 2007, you can check it out on premium video on demand now.
You can also watch it for a cheaper price digitally on January 16, 2024, or grab a DVD or Blu-ray version on January 30 -– just make sure to watch out for a mob of shoppers, a la the film's Black Friday-set opening scene. Making a movie adaptation of Edgar Wright's Grindhouse trailer, Don't, would ruin its central gag and strip it of its unique charm. The trailer works better without a narrative, allowing for a jumble of images, ghosts, zombies, and witches, while poking fun at a specific marketing technique. Wright and the cast members agree Don't is best left as a trailer, making it the "film" it was destined to be.
Making Edgar Wright's classic trailer into a movie wouldn't work, despite another Grindhouse preview becoming a box-office hit. Best buddies Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino teamed up during the late 2000s to make Grindhouse, a double feature celebration of the kinds of exploitation films they grew up on. Tarantino directed unique slasher Death Proof while Rodrigues helmed zombie movie Planet Terror. Despite featuring two name directors and an all-star cast Grindhouse was a total box-office bomb.

John Carver will kill again! Director Eli Roth has confirmed that his recent slasher hit "Thanksgiving" is indeed getting a sequel. Sony Pictures went ahead and made it official, with the follow-up expected to hit theaters sometime in 2025. Roth took to Instagram to personally share the news with his fans in a brief video, expressing his gratitude to everyone who made the first film a success.

Plot details remain under wraps, but (and not to spoil anything) the ending of the first film was just ambiguous enough to leave the door open for a follow-up. No word yet on who, if any, of the cast members from the first film will return for "Thanksgiving 2." Roth also said in the video that the sequel will arrive in 2025 "probably around Thanksgiving," although a firm release date has not yet been set.

Eli Roth's Thanksgiving movie finally hit the big screens, becoming a staple in the slasher genre thanks to its entertaining adaptation of the Grindhouse trailer. Thanksgiving features a more star-studded cast compared to the Grindhouse trailer, with A-list actors bringing name recognition and higher budget to the film. Thanksgiving is a proper slasher film, incorporating humor through satire and providing commentary on consumerism, while also deviating from the fake trailer.
Before Tristar Pictures made the feature-length film, Eli Roth's Thanksgiving was a fake Grindhouse trailer, making it easy to compare the two projects. In 2007, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino released the cult classic film Grindhouse, a double feature of Planet Terror and Death Proof. Between the two films, Grindhouse includes five fake trailers that parody different genres. Roth's fake trailer for Thanksgiving quickly became a fan favorite due to its campy gore and salacious nudity.

The Grindhouse package did fairly well at the box office but the trailers eventually outstripped its performance by a wide margin. Eli Roth is home for the holidays with enough fiendish fun and ripped flesh to send horror fans to theaters multiple times between now and Thanksgiving.
The “Hostel” director hasn’t touched his signature genre in almost a decade, but he’s been cooking up his latest film with writer Jeff Rendell since they were teenagers — and it’s more than worth the wait. That cinematic morsel immediately stirred up cries for a full-blown adaptation, and for its annual re-watchers, the feature-length “Thanksgiving” is exactly what you’d expect.

Grindhouse is one of the most influential box office failures of the 21st century. Despite grossing a paltry $25.4 million at the box office on a budget of around $60 million, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 love letter to exploitation cinema has managed to spawn four spin-off movies — Machete, Machete Kills, Hobo with a Shotgun, and now Thanksgiving— in addition to reintroducing a vintage aesthetic that has been mimicked by countless other throwback movies.
Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof each have their merits — the former plays like a satirical pastiche of nonstop action, while the latter is more indicative of genuine exploitation fare — but Grindhouse is more than just a double feature. It’s an experience, complete with faux aging to recreate the look of beat-up film prints along with vintage interstitials and retro-inspired trailers for nonexistent movies.

For director Eli Roth, "Thanksgiving" has been a movie over 16 years in the making. Originally meant as an in-joke, the horror movie's origins are as humble as it gets: a fake trailer for a hypothetical, extremely low-budget, and uber-violent slasher that bridged the two films featured in Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's experimental double feature "Grindhouse" back in 2007. This concept could've easily remained a fun, if inconsequential footnote in a long-gone era of B-movie sleaze. Instead, the film now joins fellow fake trailers "Machete" and "Hobo With A Shotgun" as "Grindhouse" spin-offs (of a sort) that have since gone from parody to reality.
The miracle of it all, of course, is that most would've expected an oddity like "Thanksgiving" to settle for little more than empty pastiche, impotently aping the '80s slashers Roth so blatantly tried to evoke in his early directing efforts. Those who've watched the original...

It's been 16 years since "Grindhouse" was released and it's still one of the most fascinating genre movies to ever hit theater screens. Not so much in terms of quality (the movie has its die-hard fans and exasperated critics still to this day), but in just how influential it was, especially for a movie that bombed so spectacularly at the box office.
To brush you up on the movie, it was Robert Rodriguez hot off of "Sin City" and Quentin Tarantino joining forces to pay homage to a particular favorite period of genre filmmaking: the "Grindhouse Era." That's where really gory, sleazy, typically super low-budget horror movies had their place to shine in rundown theaters. It was an era of little to no executive oversight, so anything went in these hyper-violent movies.

Every major holiday could stand to have a slasher movie themed around it, especially one with a sunny disposition masquerading the grim truth behind it like Thanksgiving. Such was Eli Roth's thinking when he made his fake "Thanksgiving" movie trailer for Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's "Grindhouse" experiment back in 2007. Roth's original short is a collection of scenes of people getting brutally decapitated over the Thanksgiving holiday frame by a serial killer dressed as a Pilgrim. It's grotesque, juvenile, and tasteless. In other words, it's everything you either love or hate about Eli Roth's horror work in general.
16 years later, Roth has finally gone and turned "Thanksgiving" into a full-fledged film, just like the fake "Grindhouse" trailers turned actual films "Machete" and "Hobo with a Shotgun" before it. Eli Roth's new slasher film Thanksgiving pays homage to holiday-themed horror movies and centers around a serial killer's killing spree during the holidays. Thanksgiving is based on a fake trailer made by Eli Roth for the 2007 film Grindhouse, and it's part of a tradition of adapting these trailers into feature films. Roth has been wanting to make Thanksgiving into a full movie for 16 years, but other projects and bigger-budget opportunities came in the way until now.
Eli Roth’s new holiday-themed slasher movie, Thanksgiving, pays off a tease from a Quentin Tarantino movie that came out 16 years ago. Thanksgiving is an homage to holiday-themed slasher movies like Halloween, Black Christmas, and My Bloody Valentine. It revolves around the killing spree of serial killer John Carver, who comes to a small town in Massachusetts for the holidays with the intention of making his Thanksgiving meal out of the town’s residents.

For an experiment that fell flat on its face at the box office, "Grindhouse" has left a remarkably large cultural footprint. Not only has Quentin Tarantino's half of his and Robert Rodriguez's 2007 double-feature, "Death Proof," gained greater appreciation, but also several of the fake trailers included in screenings of the duo's exploitation genre love letter have since taken on a life of their very own. Rodriguez's "Machete" trailer has birthed not one but two films, while the "Hobo with a Shotgun" trailer (a fan-made promo that mostly screened with "Grindhouse" in Canada) similarly gave rise to an actual film titled *checks notes* "Hobo with a Shotgun."
After more than 15 years of promising to turn his own "Grindhouse" faux promo, "Thanksgiving," into the real deal, writer/director Eli Roth has finally gone and done just that. The original trailer, for those unfamiliar, centers on a serial killer who...

We have (3) copies of the Blu-ray for some lucky readers to enter and win. All you have to do is fill out the below form and we’ll choose three winners are random. No Po Boxes and U.S. entries only, please.
Kids vs. Aliens, which delivers all of the charm, fun, and chaos of a Jason Eisener film, is the latest collaboration between Bloody Disgusting, Cinepocalypse, and Studio71, who jointly produced V/H/S/94 and V/H/S/99.

This Thanksgiving, it's not just turkeys that'll be getting carved up. Horror director Eli Roth is set to follow in the footsteps of "Machete Kills" filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and "Hobo With A Shotgun" director Jason Eisener, turning the fake movie trailer he made for Rodriguez's 2007 film "Grindhouse" into a real, feature-length movie. "Thanksgiving" is now set to strut its way to theaters in time for the colonialist feast day.
While Roth has yet to drop a trailer or first footage from the movie, fans of the filmmaker probably have a good idea of what to expect from the feature-length expansion of a delightfully nasty short that left audiences laughing (and flinching) back when Rodriguez's "Grindhouse" made its debut. It's too soon to tell how much "Thanksgiving" will borrow from its source material, but as the first fiction feature co-written, directed, and produced by the "Hostel" filmmaker since 2015's Keanu Reeves-led erotic thriller,...

Casey Jones has appeared alongside his friends the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in many adaptations of the comic-book series, but the vigilante has never received his own movie. But if Jason Eisener had his way, we’d be watching that Casey Jones movie right now.
Jason Eisener is best known as the director of Hobo with a Shotgun and the recent Kids. vs Aliens, and he took to Twitter to show off a tone reel for a potential Casey Jones movie he pitched to Paramount Pictures five years ago.
“Five years ago I pitched a Casey Jones standalone film to Paramount with Shredders daughter Karai as the heel,” Jason Eisener wrote on Twitter. “The final act saw Casey team up with Raphael who was too look like he stepped out of the 1990 film.” A tone reel typically uses footage from other films to establish tone and atmosphere, and Eisener’s...

There are some filmmakers that just effortlessly ooze cool, and Jason Eisener is absolutely one of those people. The Canadian creative first came to mainstream public consciousness after winning the "Grindhouse" fake trailer contest hosted by Robert Rodriguez and SXSW Festival, and his winning short, "Hobo with a Shotgun," led to a feature film of the same name starring Rutger Hauer. In the years that followed, Eisener has been involved in a slew of ridiculously rad projects, like the killer Christmas tree slasher, "Treevenge," serving as a producer on the well-loved "Turbo Kid," co-creating the Vice series "Dark Side of the Ring," and directing a segment of "V/H/S/2" that evolved into the genre-bending feature film, "Kids vs. Aliens."
If you want a film to have striking visuals, snappy dialogue, and a bleeding, beating heart of genre influences, you call Jason Eisener. This is why it makes complete sense that Eisner...

You'd think Halloween would be the holiday that the lion's share of holiday-themed horror movies would center around. But that would have to be Christmas, which has inspired the likes of classics such as "Black Christmas," "Silent Night, Deadly Night," "Gremlins," "The Nightmare Before Christmas," the incredible "Tales From The Crypt" segment "And All Through The House," and so many more.
Maybe it's because Christmas is supposed to represent the pinnacle of goodness and charity that mucking it all up with blood, guts, and terror is just too perverse to resist. But of all the other holidays on the calendar, Thanksgiving gets my vote for the most untapped potential, horror-wise. Pilgrims? Unseasoned food? Family coming to my house? Wake me up when the nightmare is over.
While there has been a solid assortment of Thanksgiving-themed shockers over the years, from "Kristy" to "Séance" to the delightfully campy "Into The Dark" film "Pilgrim,...

The Grindhouse feature film Thanksgiving has a big star on the horizon to take the lead role. The film, which is being directed by Eli Roth, is an expansion of the parody trailer he contributed to the 2007 theatrical experience Grindhouse. The project was a double feature of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's retro throwback films Death Proof and Planet Terror that played faux trailers in between the features, including other titles that were eventually adapted into full films like Machete and Hobo with a Shotgun.
Per Deadline, a major star is currently in talks to take the lead in Eli Roth's Thanksgiving. The star in question is Patrick Dempsey, who is best known for playing McDreamy on the medical drama Grey's Anatomy, on which he appeared for over 250 episodes. More recently, he appeared in the 2022 Disney+ sequel Disenchanted, reprising his role from the original 2007 Enchanted.

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Kids vs Aliens. How does the Kids vs Aliens ending differ from the original V/H/S/2 segment it was based on? Kids vs Aliens is Jason Eisner's second feature, arriving 12 years after his 2011 debut feature Hobo with a Shotgun. Like that film, Kids vs Aliens is an expansion of one of Eisner's short films, this time his segment "Slumber Party Alien Abduction" from the 2013 anthology film V/H/S/2.
The kids of the title are Gary (Dominic Mariche) and his friends Jack (Asher Grayson Percival) and Miles (Ben Tector), who make wrestling-themed science fiction films in Gary's barn, with the help of his teenage sister Samantha (Phoebe Rex). However, a rift is created between Gary and Samantha when the latter is suddenly courted by Billy (Calem MacDonald), who, with his friends Dallas (Isaiah Fortune) and Trish (Emma Vickers), act as bullies to Gary and his friends.

Eleven years have passed since director Jason Eisener brought us Hobo with a Shotgun (watch it Here), and while we have had other pieces of Eisener entertainment to watch since then – he contributed segments to the anthologies The ABCs of Death and V/H/S/2, and also directed the series The Dark Side of the Ring – we haven’t gotten another Eisener feature film. Until now. Eisener’s new film Kids vs. Aliens is set to premiere at Fantastic Fest later this month, and it has also secured distribution beyond that. Variety reports that Rlje Films will be giving Kids vs. Aliens a theatrical, VOD, and digital release sometime in early 2023. Then the movie will receive a streaming release through Shudder.

There is no dearth of literal movie titles — consider "Snakes on a Plane" or the grindhouse flick "Hobo with a Shotgun" — but now, brace yourselves for ..."Nightbitch."
Described as a darkly comic neo-horror, "Nightbitch," with Amy Adams as the lead, will follow a woman raising a toddler in the suburbs, spending most of her time staying at home and taking care of the child. However, something deeply primordial is awakened by virtue of her motherhood, and several incidents lead to her transforming into a dog, er, in the night.

A new year has finally arrived and HBO Max is set to open it with a bang. With its list of new releases for January 2022, HBO Max is rolling out some intriguing original series and an absolutely packed slate of library titles.
The real highlight this month comes on Jan. 13 with the release of Peacemaker. Developed by James Gunn, this series spins off John Cena’s titular character from last years’ The Suicide Squad. The show will delve into the pathology of a superhero who will achieve peace regardless of how many people need to be killed to attain it.
Also of note this month are second seasons for two major HBO series. Euphoria season 2 and The Righteous Gemstones season 2 both premiere on Jan. 9, making for quite the odd double feature. Meanwhile, the fifth and final season of superb comedy Search Party arrives on Jan. 7.
January 2022 is light as far as original movies go.

This isn't a particularly high quality production, but that's the point - just some movie geek friends having fun making a throwback short film honoring hobos that kick ass and take out the trash. Jay Baruchel has played a role for every consumer age bracket: The Canadian actor’s lengthy resume includes everything, from voicing an awkward teen in Dreamworks’ hit animated franchise “How to Train Your Dragon” to playing a 20-something looking for love with surreal consequences in “Man Seeking Woman” to, well, himself in “This Is the End” in 2013, alongside longtime friend and sometimes-collaborator Seth Rogen.
For his latest film, “Random Acts of Violence,” premiering at Fantastic Fest on Sept. 19, he took up not only acting but also screenwriting and directorial duties, his second turn at the helm — In 2017, Baruchel directed “Goon: Last of the Enforcers,” the sequel to hockey comedy “Goon,” both of which he co-wrote and acted in.

Chicago – Cult character actor Rutger Hauer passed away late last month, but the mark he made with his array of performances carried through two generation of admirers, even receiving the honor of Best Dutch Actor of the (20th) Century in 1999. He died on July 19th, 2019, in his native Netherlands. He was 75.
He was born in Breukelen, the Netherlands, to actor parents. After a couple stints in the military, he graduated from the Academy for Theater and Dance in Amsterdam in 1967, and made his TV debut two years later when director Paul Verhoeven cast him in the Dutch medieval action drama “Floris.” His film debut came in 1973 with “Turkish Delight,” and he performed mostly in Dutch films during the 1970s, including work with Verhoeven again on “Solider of Orange” (1977) and “Spetters” (1980).
Although Hauer made one international English language film previously, his American debut came in 1981 with “Nighthawks.” His was unforgettable one...

The inimitable Rutger Hauer has died at 75, leaving behind a prolific legacy in film and television.
“I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.”
Rutger Hauer passed away this past Friday, July 19, at the age of the age of 75, having succumbed to a short illness. The news was revealed today by the actor’s agent, Steve Kennis.
