Sex & Nudity

  • An antagonist is fully nude during every part he is present. Genitals and buttocks are very detailed.
  • The Koskela brothers make suggestive references and are even nude in some of their in-game-commercials.
  • Mannequins with painted breasts are seen around the game.
  • When you shoot most enemies, articles of clothing and skin can rip off, revealing what remains of their genitalia.
  • Nudity can be toggled on/off via the Nudity Filter in the Settings menu. This replaces the previously mentioned nude antagonist's model (removing nipples, adding undergarments), and removing revealable genitals from enemies. This toggle only works in the Main Menu Settings because the game needs to entirely swap models.
  • Prologue, Return 1, and Return 2 all have severe graphic male nudity.

Violence & Gore

  • Very detailed and disturbing blood and gore.
  • When shot, enemies spray out blood. Skin and bone break/tear off of their bodies as well.
  • Limbs and organs are scattered around certain parts of Return.
  • The violence in this game within combat is very severe with it consisting of splashes of blood and body damage with exposed flesh and viscera.
  • In one scene, a supernatural being shifts through a man. His bones are heard breaking and he dies on the spot. Extremely graphic.
  • A group of cultists record a snuff film. We are able to see portions of it and the aftermath. Extremely graphic.
  • Gore in live action segments is frequent. Very graphic and disturbing.

Profanity

  • Frequent use of very strong language.
  • Around 150 uses of fuck throughout the game, many uses of shit, bitch, prick, asshole, bitch and many other profanities.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Very frequent use and references to alcohol.
  • After talking with two very drunk men, you walk into a trailer loaded with booze.
  • Painkillers are used as a healing item.
  • You can find Pat Maine recording a talk show episode in the Valhalla Nursing Home about an abandoned bunker. At one point he says "Teens go down there all the time to drink beer and... vape. Electronic cigarettes, yuck."
  • A manuscript page depicts characters high off of hard drugs.
  • Alcoholism is a major theme for some characters in this game.
  • The Dark Place's streets are littered with beer bottles and other trash.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Initiation is extremely dark and disturbing. Jumpscares happen frequently, and the atmosphere is very dark.
  • The Dark Place is full of fade-outs/shadows (black-shadowed humanoids), who are either very hostile, or passive. You cannot tell whether they will attack you or not, making trying to pass a group of them very suspenseful.
  • Return is very disturbing and depressing. Jumpscares of screaming people with their jaws ripped off and/or eyes carved out appear very frequently.
  • While the whole game is suspenseful and intense, Initiation is filled with much more terror and uneasiness. While Initiation takes place in The Dark Place where situations are written to be as disturbing and grisly as possible, Return takes place in the real world where you uncover the evidence of a cult after a murder. There are more realistic scenes in Return, while Initiation has bizarre aberrant scenes.
  • The game is a very jarring departure from the first game which was rated T, but this game is rated M and is survival horror with lots of disturbing images, gore, heavy profanity, nudity and violence which may not be suitable for the young fans of the first game. There are scenes where countless people are seen dead, gameplay combat shows accompanying gore and there are freakish jump scares and bizarre uncanny images throughout.
  • If this game were to be rated by the MPA it would be Rated R for frequent strong disturbing content, frequent strong language throughout, graphic brutal bloody images, frequent graphic violence, suicidal themes, intense peril, graphic nudity, alcohol abuse, use of tobacco products, and drug use.
